Video summary
The video introduces "Ze Marmot," an ongoing animation project created by a collaborative team of musicians, artists, and developers dedicated to free software. The creators explain that they are currently working in progress with support from various organizations like LEA and IMMD, both of which operate as non-profits focused on producing free art using open-source tools. A significant portion of the presentation is devoted to their philosophy of "free arts," where all assets, including artwork and software patches, are released under licenses that allow for redistribution and modification by anyone. The team highlights how they not only consume these resources but also actively contribute back to the community by fixing bugs in Blender or developing custom plugins tailored to their specific needs, ensuring full control over their creative workflow without relying on proprietary solutions.
The technical challenges faced during production are a central theme of the discussion, particularly regarding the complexities of animating with free software tools like Krita and Blender. The animator describes an arduous process involving hundreds of layers for single scenes, requiring extensive manual organization and custom plugins to manage file exports efficiently. They detail how updates to these programs often break existing workflows, forcing them to spend weeks reorganizing their files after new features are released or bugs are fixed. Despite using proxies to speed up previews, the team still faces significant rendering times when checking movements frame-by-frame, leading to a situation where they must redraw scenes multiple times until satisfied with the animation's fluidity and timing.
Beyond technical hurdles, the project serves as a poignant story about resilience and environmental conservation, centered on a marmot character who travels the world seeking a suitable place to sleep amidst climate change threats like melting ice caps in the Alps. The narrative was refined after initial crowdfunding feedback changed the design of the protagonist based on real-life observations from research trips where the team slept under snow near animal reserves. Although originally intended as a feature-length film, the project has evolved into a short animation due to the immense difficulty of managing such a large scope alone; the lead animator often wears multiple hats simultaneously without professional direction support, leading to inevitable errors and delays. The creators acknowledge that while they may not complete the full movie within this decade, their goal remains to continue producing free software content and inspiring others through DIY ethics rather than succumbing to discouragement over unmet deadlines.

zum mod uh and um I I will um first of
all I want to introduce uh our

just start with the music and C concert
yeah yeah it's it's still work in

okay uh did you enjoy
thank
you um so the yeah is a credit yeah so
the piano was orl
there and uh flute was Pine
there and the past here was a the Adrian
and the animation was a
me and uh the software which I use uh of
course I use the blender also but anyway
uh I uh for I drw a lot a lot a lot
in and he de developed the for me a
lot and also uh and also he is a
scenarist of this story yeah uh and
yeah and thank you for our supporters
yeah of to make our
project
[Applause]
yeah so
organizations um
maybe um so we are organized uh um us
it's Lea it's a nonprofit Film
Production in France Association but
which is a Film Production
by uh status you know reg as such and so
so we do only re libot that's one of the
thing uh so like same as a software the
artwork themselves uh will be available
as a creative comes by saay which kind
of like a GPL so it means people can
just
redistribute it and use it what they
want and modify it and we will also just
give all the assets which will be a lot
of EF files and some blend files and the
hardw files uh because um Ohan who is
both one of the musician and the
composer of the music and uh um sound
engineer uh only also work will be the
next slide uh with free software so
Hardware mostly but also a lot of plugin
whatever uh like you know hard plugins
and um so uh so yeah uh we do liot uh we
use we create the tools we use so not
alone that's thanks to the community but
we participate to create it uh so
but like even like blender have a few
patches in
blender like we we just when we have a
problem we just fix it it's just simpler
than U this way um and uh and we control
what we use also basically and uh so
basically that's that's our
nonprofit and the second uh member of
this project uh and or will come to
speak about it you also saw that the
immd and I will let
him present it
okay hello uh first uh I didn't realize
that um I will have to to speak in
English and to make the presentation in
English just so some some slides might
be in French I will translate and second
uh I didn't know what to tell about what
we do so I first uh choose a template in
Li and then um wonder myself what this
slide is going to speak about so might
be a bit chaotic but anyway so we called
immd we based in uh Lon which is um a
town like 200 kilometers from there and
um we as a Lea nonprofit
organization with um mostly musicians in
it but also some um graphist or infog
graphist also and we produce freeart
with free software and sometimes free
Hardware too Li Hardware or
anyway um well yes I don't know what
okay that's pretty
clear so who are we we started in two
2004 with um uh by that time we had only
one band that we care about and uh we
had to release the first album of that
band
which was called sekot the band was
called sekot and so um that was a point
where we when we decided to produce only
free Arts so uh in 2004 we chose I think
it was a freeart license by that time
and we never stopped produce producing
only free Arts still
since but at that time we didn't use
free software only because we hadn't the
abilities in the
organization then in
[Music]
two6 we released the second album and
for this we decided to drop Quark
Express and Photoshop and we we jumped
to and kbus I guess
uh so that was the first time we used uh
free software for the graphic part but
the audio part was uh always done with
um nonre software because we were we
weren't um the ones that mixed the the
album and then in 2008 we built our own
uh recording studio and mixing studio
and for this we just uh we decided to
use only fre software so for 2008 we
have a studio a recording studio with
only free software in it and since uh
this date we release um albums with this
studio and um in 2009 we just began to
use free software on stage because we
hadn't um the need of of this before but
in 20 2009 there was a project in which
we had to use free software on stage so
that was a new um a new start and from
this date on uh we also began to develop
some softwares or contribute to some
softwares and make um a bunch of um
lessons um in several uh place a bit
like this one but for for
purposes and okay that's it so what
can
um so yeah okay what we basically uh we
do production so we produce albums
and um shows so we we book tours uh
that's our main um activity we create
shows when we create shows um we now
have to develop some softwares sometimes
or to develop some solutions which
sometimes are not software but Hardware
or something in
between we can do composition for um
friends and we also uh do some
conceptions uh for the people of friend
we have um conceived the studio of the
jardan modern which is a place to rear
for the bands so they called us to to
make it possible with only free
software but that's not our main activi
that's much like um
Pro you hear it okay that's it um then
we have um we we we want to keep also um
a foot in the transmission point so we
are almost all
teachers uh several teachers of
instruments of several teachers of um
techniques informatics and
so um and we we want to to be able to
answer to some um help demands um
without knowing whether it's going to be
um uh REM paid paid or not so
um we are there and you can ask us and
maybe we have an answer and maybe we
have not
probably uh that's it and then uh we
have um quite strong principles so uh
first of all yeah we make only free arts
and with free
software uh we are deeply rooted in DIY
so that's true also for the toour
booking on such um thing we do not uh
demand
um Public Funding yeah since
2009 we consider it for us as a West of
time and we prefer to spend that time on
creation production so and we try to
um to make our work
um compatible sustainable sustainable
yeah sustainable yeah exactly for
instance we just um we We Begin tour uh
next week in which we'll be touring only
with train which is a big deal when you
when you make rock music or
but we hope it's going to be possible
and then I don't know how to translate
popular education it's a really French
concept it's like uh it's basically
something about uh helping people and
having help in exchange and let's share
all of this so it's quite close to free
uh to free
philosophy um yeah okay maybe you you
stop me already
okay uh by now these are the projects in
in the MMD so um same thing I just
there's no other it's just if the image
reminds me of one project I use it so
plagia is a r band which speaks much
about Bitcoin so that's why they're
there I play in pler uh IR right is um
traditional uh Turkish music yeah with a
pin inside
Auto Automan
music Solara is another band with uh
some pin student inside the mermut
you've seen it uh state of the art and
Stone from the sky is um big stun of
band probably the band that make the the
more concert in all of us and baron
frecks was um is still a band um of C
concert with um
using some piece of software I might
speak a bit about later and then there
are some other things yeah okay
outside
um yeah okay just not
so uh so that's an example of one um
album cover which was done in uh
[Music]
2014 for B called Soft trains oh okay
there was two BS soft train and Stone
from the sky so it was done with
and then edited um it was done within
I should say because it was first a
piece of um of
plastic plastic art and then it was
edited with
scribus
um that's that was made by the same same
artist so that was a poster from sekot
in 20110 that was also done uh within
um found it pretty cool
and uh by the way YULA is someone who
lives around R now but I don't know
where it's not so
far and that's okay that's what we can
do with when we really don't want
to
rear so we take the the laptop and we do
some shitty
stuff and we make a lot like this so
that's what okay but that a real big
part of of our of our
activity um okay and then I I will just
end with that uh PSL was a piece of
software we developed first um for a
small show for kids and uh we use it now
in um in the B freaks so that's a only
piece of software with uh really linked
to Graphics that's why I speak about
this one um
the the aim is to produce
um kind of decorum which can be animated
uh on a backdrop of a stage so um
basically it draws um 3D
image um like 25 times a second and in
this image we have
slides
um PL slides planes we have planes yeah
which are textured with uh images of or
movies can be textures with images of
movies and
so you can just um animate the
slides and um make them uh pass um
change the position change the scale
change the the rotation and so so you
can imagine each slide is an object or
part of an object and so you can
basically build a Mot with uh a slide
for the the arm slide for the other arm
slide for the the head and so on and
then you can animate the head the HS and
um everything is um controllable by OS
open um open Sound control so you can
control it uh in Live or you can program
it
um before and then it will just run like
you you want and uh with this uh program
we can have a
with um animated things which cams get
out um and we have controllers on stage
that we can trigger to make something
happen and then uh the story that um
happens on stage can then go on screen
hope it's um almost clear uh I cannot
make you a demonstration because my
laptop is
just okay it's just quite dead now so so
it's not possible but you can can find
uh some videos I guess and um it was at
first developed with pure data and then
we decided to Port it to um raspberry so
it was then uh Port it to python plus um
a library which is called p p 3D and
then now it's you can run it on anything
but it's not so easy to install because
uh we we've made it for us and we've not
really make a prop documentation and so
so you have to ask if you want to to use
it and okay that's it I guess
[Applause]
um just want to say like of U we're very
happy like to work with MD because they
are very close to what we do like they
have the same kind of spirit with their
own building their own tools and the
free software about and everything like
uh and they're like they around here so
for people around or everything just
just you should hire them like it could
not show the like the last stuff he
showed like P something uh but uh videos
or something it didn't show any video
but uh it's very impressive stuff
because like so they like doing very
funny stuff with they make a show with
the musician on stage and and then they
they go inside the screen and this kind
of stuff which is very funny um so
yeah so let's uh
speak a
bit okay let's speak about the zum
project um uh I think um uh yeah it um
actually it started a very long time ago
uh 9 years years ago um we started um
crowdfunding uh how to say we announc
announced the crowd funding in lgm
so okay and I just quickly uh so maybe
someone who don't know what what was it
so it was a story of z
uh I I don't know how to draw so that's
someone else so it started with his
story and I tried to uh start um make uh
some illustration and uh I just decided
to make it animation so it's it's a kind
of a concept art like this and I mean
before sorry it was a before I thought
animation is a some kind of ideas and I
started to make it like um comics but
later I I just decided to make it on
animation and
we uh it's it's after uh we started
crowd funding I think I think crowd
funding was in
2015 lgm
2015 we started uh and then we made some
researches on my mods and everything uh
two trips uh and production started in
2016 I
think so
yeah um yeah
we it was a it was um May but there was
a lot of snow in Alps yeah uh and uh I I
um I was not really good to draw animals
so I made some uh
sculpture uh to see uh the model like uh
for as a as a
model yeah uh about the uh ah sorry yeah
about the research like we went we made
two trips the second say was the second
one and we was I think with we got in
touch with someone at University I think
of Leon
2 uh and they were making every year
some research uh in some Reserve animal
reserve in the Alps uh like following uh
colonies of mamuts in the Alps so we we
slept uh under the snow like four one
week in a 10th in May so it's it was
very cold and it was snowing every day
and uh we have videos where it's like
storing and everything and like this
okay and yeah is still a preproduction
is he's writing the actually yeah this
this zum project is not a short
animation uh actually is uh we thought
um to make a long length
animation um but uh to
start uh we we just um started to make a
short part of animation so so this these
old papers are uh the uh treatment yeah
treatment yeah treatment of Animation so
it's a we just made the first paper the
first paper of the the yeah
treatment is just it's one of the step
in script writing
yeah and uh yeah and still
pre-production um yeah H when when when
we started um uh the crowdfunding uh
people we we showed a teacher and uh uh
the in the teacher the design of M was
like this the first one and the people
say that oh it's a very cute cat so
we after we we traveled in apps and we
see a rear mamod and and then I changed
the design like
this and this is you already see in the
um I saw in the animation is another
Mama's character
sheet yeah this is opening C and this is
the story board the one I wrote and it's
the 75 pages and this one is um I wrote
down on um paper first first time I
wrote on wrote down on the paper but
later I draw on and uh I put yeah I
put on computer and yeah and like this
is a storyboard for the the the shot
that you saw so it's 745 page just for
the shot
okay and it's a a part of Thea sorry
it's a Korean I'm Korean and I
written and is some oh there is no video
oops oh there is some technique issue uh
I
I we prepared some um uh some clips to
show how we progress our
animation
okay oh yeah what what should I speak
okay um yeah um uh
yeah
ah um I don't know um yeah
yeah just a yeah just um yeah if you
want to see it you can come later and I
will show
you yeah but anyway we we had only 10
minutes for zum mod talking so VOA
and maybe let's show this one at
least okay uh okay okay there was a lot
of issue
in a software uh to make animation uh
this is all renders
images uh which is uh when I draw in
um is uh doesn't make an animation
directly of course uh so um to do line
test line test is when I draw an
animation and then I have to check the
movement uh so to check the movement uh
he made some motion plugin uh to
see uh the movement easily but uh the
problem is when I uh
do uh the editing uh which means uh I uh
put the images uh getting together for
lender uh and then I have to um re or re
reput reput on the blender video editing
uh part so it's double Works uh so just
I started to make it directly on the
blender
so yeah to see the uh
correct uh time how to say is that
sometimes when when I see just on the
blender is not uh 24 frame per second uh
and it's some sometimes it's a little
bit uh uh slow or something so some live
R sometimes live rendering is not
accurate yeah it's uh blender is a bit
uh well some we actually use yes also
proxy so we have a bunch of scripts and
we export stuff with every image also
with frames we even export them with
proxy for blenders because blender
support proxy but even with this well it
has of bad quality because it's smaller
files or it's uh even when it's small
file so time it's still slow so she
still has to render it a lot of waiting
render it to check and everything so
yeah so yeah I I made a lot of uh like
every every folder uh is depends on the
folder but is a usually every folder has
like this rendering
um what what we show here is just like
uh this is just one one cut and like
that's like for one catch she made like
uh I don't know how how it 20 20 test uh
actually like uh for every catch she
actually when you
see you see it's already a lot of frame
right but actually it's a lot of frames
that you
probably uh Drew 20 times because she
was not happy uh with uh an animation it
was not perfect and uh and uh like some
all so movement is not is not fine it
should not be like this so she red does
it a
lot and also not only for 20 times
because I have to make a rough sketch
first and later uh um a little bit
cleanup sketch and also color and I have
to check everything so every time I uh
did and then I check and render and
check and render and check like this so
fortun yeah this one is a yeah this one
is a GI I think yeah so it's actually I
we wanted to show is a story animatic
animatic is a which is a move moving
storyboard how say yeah okay and there
is no sorry was supposed to be the same
but of different steps yeah uh oh this
one is working uh okay
so this one I think is only the key
frame right uh uh maybe yeah I think
yeah it's um maybe yeah I I I know that
some people when they do video or when
they do 3D for them key frame is
something some other meaning but the
real original meaning of key frame is
the important movement of uh of an
animation at a weight before was maybe
it was
before
don't I think that's this one this one
is in between you think it is in between
okay that's what maybe this one Sor so
mess that's that's sad because just this
one was would have been
interesting but key frame anyway is not
like the same as key frame as as 3D
anyway so sorry I I checked before going
to sleep yesterday was all
walking it's it's lib his fault
but but anyway anyway uh it's all um the
program of Animation so um so another
problem was um um how say to make
animation uh and also progress software
is um uh not really easy to imagine what
what I imagined because um for example
is just one example but um for example
before we in kimp there was no multicell
so if I want to put it change it or the
place of the layers and then I have to
move one by one by one and uh can you
show us the
layers we prepared the two file of our
layer our um cut so
that's yeah is and also the is not only
for move for example
um
um yeah U uh when it
wasn't um it it wasn't developed and
then um I I did my best I I I choose uh
best Organization for me but later it
developed and then uh I have a a better
option and is definitely uh if I change
the organization it's uh save time so I
change the organization and yeah
everything is a yeah also small file
yeah is this one is a small file and uh
is you not small file actually there is
a more short file also but it's a a
little bit um average is a file and
there
is uh
15 uh layers item item so it's include a
group
also so there is a one uh sketch line
and color and uh um there he made a
plugin for export um
because um to export also I had to
export every single layers export and
Export and Export 100 time on yeah this
is so so big work so he made some plugin
but uh the plugin doesn't uh um how to
say count uh it count all of them uh
that means um I can't choose which part
and which part I want to export so every
time
I I export everything and I remove
something it was so complicated and
later he again developed and uh but
there was some problem was if if
I uh if I don't enter in the layer
group uh it it uh export separately
sketch line and uh color
uh anyway so so uh I put all in the
folder and or again Chang the
organized well do you understand
my anyway yeah that was that was like
that yeah anyway yeah you want yeah okay
sorry and this one is a
481 items uh include the group uh folder
so it's a yeah it's very a lot actually
I colored this
file which which was not colored on the
uh the s concert but actually I called
it all but I I didn't make a time to
render them because the fight is too big
so it takes so long time
actually we
had so actually even the F the video
version you you saw was not exactly the
last one because we weren't able like
this one this scene was colored but we
weren't even able to like uh put it
because blender could not handle uh the
render for this one so we will have to
find a way to maybe break it or
something because it's it's a blender F
so so so complicated that the blender
had a hard time to manage this specific
cut uh and we didn't have time we will
have found we will find a solution no
problem but we don't have time before we
came to lgm
so yeah uh okay
I I don't know what I did I tell
everything or not I don't know okay and
like some some of the like challenges we
had I think also like uh so that's
something we discussed with Elisa was
saying also like uh don't ever update
your software during a project and
that's actually true uh it's like
something that uh uh like people say in
for and everything like graphics people
say like don't stick to your uh version
within the time of project but since our
project was kind of dual software and uh
and production uh it was hard for us uh
because uh we she was actually live
testing uh development so so that
made like a lot of uh actually she Lo
lost a lot of time also like on on this
on like having to update and stuff broke
or oh she say like stuff got better so
she had to spend weeks to reorganize her
file to get to make use of the better
possibility of so just to do thing
better she had to like like Z real
organization after we got multi
selection she like spent weeks on it for
instance just to reorganize files so and
I'm still organizing
something okay and then uh maybe let's
um
I can I can explain this for you uh also
like this another big challenge is that
uh so she's doing this alone normally
basically she's doing like a 100 people
job by herself uh like an animation
movies like several years or like a
movie like this will be typically one
year
fulltime like very small budget like 50
people or 100 people that's just IND the
stuff
uh but she's doing it alone uh and like
one of the big stuff is that um uh she
has several hearts and uh and um she for
instance she's like a director and
animator in same time and uh and
background artist and everything so so
and she cannot do it in the same time
actually so sometimes she's a background
artist sometimes she's the animator and
like she will animate something and then
she will do the background and then
there will be a problem but normally
normally the director will see this
earlier and the director can like say
Alo you did it bad you know but uh but
she doesn't she cannot so she cannot
have both you at the same time so she
she makes more eror uh but and like
realize after this that she wasted weeks
doing something which needs to be Riden
because she was animator and not
director this time and she cannot be
boss but it also I I learned uh with
this mistake a lot of mistakes so next
time it will be
better yeah um yeah maybe we don't have
really a lot of time so we just pass
okay so basically this okay I just a
list of stuff but like yeah multi-layer
selection uh like also like selecting a
layer with alt middle click I think it
is or Al right click you can on click on
a pixel and it's so when you have 400
layers you like oh this mot which it is
like so she can click on the canvas and
it's something in game three it's you
can click on the like proba Al middle
click Al right click and just give you
the right layer of course if there are
several of these pixel you can click
several times and it will Loop through
them this kind of stuff uh but actually
the list is just too long I won't uh
yeah so and we want to implement a lot
more stuff so but some stuff I I also
spoke about uh during the previous
course talk and uh animation stuff of
course so we did a lot of stuff where
actually like the animation she talk
about uh plugin actually I think I made
three plugins and every time we were not
happy with it and uh so we scrapped uh
like we used prog for a few months and
then like it's not perfect so we did it
again something different and like now
we want to do something in cimp and
actually I have a branch with walks
where with a timeline and everything and
uh and it's like the all link layer
stuff it's like I think it's even older
like it's I have a brand from like 2018
or something uh uh but it's still
something which will uh I have to I will
have to finish it after games three uh
yeah and that's I think the next okay
and that's Al other stuffs which kind of
like with this project it made us
maintenance basically of because we
just did so many stuff and uh so at some
point my comment not say it told me but
basically you meant no so uh so that was
uh for a project it was both awesome and
both kind of huge challenge because
actually it got us a lot lot more burden
and uh suddenly we had uh also like kind
of uh handle a lot more stuff uh which
were not project related uh so that was
both uh being me of G was is B like nice
because uh it's okay we can choose a lot
more stuff but also like a lot lot of
B and uh yeah then after this we will
finish this project this year short this
year normally and uh so we may never
make it into a long movie uh because uh
yeah so is all it's just to difficult we
may just after this shot so M was
supposed to travel and actually that's
she doesn't she doesn't die at the end
normally she's that was a start of the
travel but uh we will we may never see
it uh uh it's Libra software someone may
continue that they afraid to yeah
actually this the story is um uh um the
message we have a message in this story
but actually we can't see any message
from here right now but uh the message
is uh uh he we he traveled uh the world
for to to find a good place to sleep and
and there and there and he is is poer or
well and and uh uh he he will come back
and he is a uh he he found a way uh how
to say is a now here happy I mean it's
not the happiness is not uh the the
other way is uh here now is happy I kind
of some um message is in there so I
really want to make it uh a full story I
want to make it but I think
just only 9 Minutes like this and nine
years 10 years it still doesn't work so
maybe uh if if we can get some more
funding or and then maybe let's think uh
maybe hire someone and uh make it more
or uh just we we make another project uh
um to handle uh
easier and and then uh maybe let's think
someday uh we finish the project the
long long long metrage long length film
sorry yeah okay I guess people may think
the message right now is like don't make
dreams you will
[Laughter]
die so yeah that's it's kind of
yeah yeah so F like just for our prod
just just continue to make more more
projects and it's just for is really
Libra free software and everything and U
and working with ammd and uh uh yeah
because we had like when we asked for
musician we had like a lot of other
people who actually sent us uh uh nice
stuff but we thought it was like just
made sense to work with uh people who
were doing the same as us but on music
side
yeah thank you
