My name is Shiyou Dou and I come from
China. My hometown is Qingdao, a very
beautiful coastal city.
And I got my PhD at Tsinghua University,
where I started my research journey into
greenhouse gas emissions. My research
focuses on the near real-time and
high-resolution monitoring of greenhouse
gas emissions. I strongly believe that
the timely and accurate emission data is
a foundation for climate change
assessment. So, during my PhD, I mainly
focused on carbon dioxide. And in my
postdoc, I moved more into methane
because, you know, methane plays a
critical role in short-term climate
change. And reducing methane emissions
is one of the fastest ways to slow
global warming. Yeah, so my research
goal is to provide an independent and
near real-time information on emissions
by integrating satellite observations,
ground-based data, and by using the
top-down inversion model and the
bottom-up inventory model. Yeah, so that
the policy makers, the companies, and
the public can use such near real-time
emission data to check the progress, to
identify the hotspots, and to better
support the energy transition. I have
established the global gridded daily CO2
emissions data set called GRACED before.
And during my postdoc, I worked with
Professor Rob Jackson and Professor Adam
Brandt to do more work about fossil
methane emissions. I think I'm growing
as an energy leader mainly by learning
how to connect the detailed science with
real-world decisions. I come from a very
technical background, usually focusing
on the Earth system Earth system
science, the satellite observations, or
modeling. So, I used to thinking the
energy questions
in terms of models or numbers.
What I really appreciate about this
community is that people come from very
different perspectives. Yeah, some work
on the energy systems, some are
engineering solutions, and some are
policy and decision makings. So, through
the
seminars, the workshops, and the various
intersections with other fellows and
faculty,
I have learned how to think more
carefully about how the scientific
emission data can be actually used by
policy makers, by the companies, or by
the public. When I see the impact of my
research to energy transition, I want my
research to provide the eyes in the sky
that can make the emissions data
transparent. So, my research goal is to
ensure that the energy transition is
really guided by the timely and accurate
emissions data so that we can meet our
climate goals or mitigation targets
faster.
