So, the US Open have announced the wild
cards for the singles and a big doubles
wild card as well. There was a little
bit of drama around the wild cards over
the last couple of days, so let's go
have a look at who actually got them.
All right, starting on the women's side
of things, we had Brengle, Prodan,
Kenin, Su-Wei, Stephens all getting wild
cards for the Americans, and of course
the US Open, French Open, Australian
Open all have a deal to give each other
a wild card at each slam. So, Zhang
Zhang got the French wild card, Preston
got the Australian wild card, Venus got
a wild card as well, and in the doubles
for the WTA, the Williams sisters. So,
Serena and Venus teaming up again to
play in New York. So, it's going to be
really exciting to see them because they
haven't played since 2022. On the men's
side of things, we have Blanch, Gojo,
Kennedy, Wolf, and Zhang all getting
wild cards for the Americans. Then you
got Monfils who gets the French wild
card, Sweeny gets the Australian wild
card, and Stan Wawrinka gets the wild
card to finish it off. Kipson was
supposed to get the wild card, or he did
get the wild card, but he withdrew due
to injury, so Stan got his wild card.
And that was all, you know, the
controversy around the wild cards. So
many people asking, "Why didn't Stan get
one? He deserves one. He's a former
champion. It's his final season." But
yeah, just the way the wild cards are
set up, you know, we don't have We don't
really have any answers from the US Open
why they didn't consider Stan. Maybe
they did consider him, but we don't know
the communication. Maybe it broke down.
Who knows? But he's getting one now, and
this is what he had to say about it. He
said, "I'm incredibly excited to accept
the wild card for the US Open and look
forward to competing in front of the
fans in New York once again." So, his
final US Open, Stan gets a wild card,
everybody's happy again, and we'll see
where he falls in the draw in a couple
of days. There it is. Stan gets his wild
card, which was a little bit of a, you
know, frustration for fans because of
course we've seen other slams in the
past sort of ignore the, you know,
retiring greats. Of course, Dominic
Thiem at the French Open a few years
ago, that was a big deal, him not
getting a wild card. But the way the
wild cards work, it's just they don't
just, you know, they're not really for
players in particular, right? Yeah, of
course, we all want to see that fairy
tale finish, but you know, they don't
have to give wild cards out to certain
players. They, you know, they have that,
you know, deal with the French Open.
They have a deal with the Australian
Open where they have to give a wild card
out to those two, you know, events in
those two countries. But, other than
that, you know, the the wild cards are
mainly there for the Americans because
it's the US Open. Give them a chance.
But, thank God he got one because I
think people would have been really
angry cuz he didn't even play the
qualis, Stan. So, he would have just
ended not playing the US Open and then,
you know, going on to the next
tournaments and and playing in those to
retire his career. But, yeah, Stan's
playing. Serena and Venus are coming
back, which is a huge story as well.
