Video summary
When the narcissist finally realizes they have let "the one" get away, it is often after years of futile attempts to replace that person with others who fail to match their previous level of engagement and devotion. Having discarded the original partner for someone new only to run them through the same cycle of love bombing, devaluation, and eventual discard, the narcissist eventually exhausts themselves in a decade-long pattern of disappointment. By this point, having married multiple times or built families that did not work out as expected, they are forced to confront reality: no one else offers the unconditional loyalty, patience, and emotional safety that the original partner provided so consistently. This realization forces them back into contact with the ex-partner, but their return is rarely an act of genuine love; instead, it manifests through extreme behaviors like contempt or idealization as they desperately try to recapture a sense of control and familiarity they once took for granted.
The core issue lies in the fundamental difference between how narcissists view relationships versus how healthy partners do. Narcissists operate on conditions rather than true connection, expecting their partner to provide an endless supply of admiration while remaining invisible themselves as they gradually stop appreciating what is given freely. They mistakenly believe that because a relationship feels safe and predictable with one person, it will last forever without them needing to change or invest effort. This expectation leads them to shoot themselves in the foot by becoming accustomed to their partner's kindness until that very consistency becomes boring rather than valuable. Consequently, they leave believing someone better is waiting on the other side of the grass, only for reality to catch up when every new relationship eventually hits its expiry date and reveals similar flaws or a lack of depth due to their own inability to bond authentically.
Ultimately, even if the narcissist does come back years later, it is not because they miss the person but rather what that person represented: stability, ease, and admiration without resistance. They objectify people as tools to serve them, craving the specific dynamic where everything went according to their script until someone finally pushed back or left. When they eventually compare new partners to the original partner who got away, it is a comparison of utility and predictability rather than an emotional connection born from love. This realization highlights that narcissists never truly know themselves or how to move forward without looking backward at past supplies for guidance; they mimic behaviors because they lack their own identity. For survivors, understanding this dynamic shifts the focus away from hoping for change in a partner who will never evolve and toward recognizing one's own worth, realizing that waiting for someone incapable of loving you back is an unnecessary drain on energy that could be better spent building a life based on mutual respect and genuine connection.

When the narcissist realizes they let
the one get away.
They wanted to replace you.
They convinced themselves that they
would find someone better than you.
And so they discarded you.
They found someone else.
They run them through the same cycle.
Love bombing.
Devaluation.
Discard.
And then they found another person and
did the same thing.
And this may have repeated for 10 years.
Until finally, after they tried
everything.
And experienced nothing but failure and
disappointment.
They remember you.
Even though you may have seen through
them.
You may have confronted them.
You may have exposed them.
But by this point they've already tried
replacing you multiple times.
They may have gotten married and had
children.
And nothing worked out.
So now. They're back.
And just they went to the end of
extremes.
Of devaluing you. Treating you with
contempt.
Acting like anyone would be better than
you.
It should reveal to you.
That they also have the capacity to view
you on the opposite end of extremes as
well.
And this is often exactly what they do.
Suddenly they start questioning if they
let the best person go.
And yet at this point. There's nothing
they can do about it.
Hey survivors.
If you're new here. I am a narc
survivor.
And I am a narcissist expert.
I have been making videos on YouTube for
nearly eight years. Helping survivors of
narcissistic abuse to empower themselves
through research and experience.
I'd really appreciate it if you could
give this video a thumbs up.
As it helps to support my work.

Many survivors wonder if the narcissist
will ever realize what they lost.
Because we often give so much of
ourselves in these relationships.
We entered for love.
We thought we were working together.
We thought the relationship was going to
grow.
Because why else would we get into
relationships?
We don't get into relationships
just to break up weeks, months, or years
later.
No one does that.
No one wants that.
But I do believe that when a narcissist
gets into a relationship, they know that
at some point it's going to end.
Because deep down they know what they're
like.
They know they can't help themselves.
They know that at some point they're
going to push things too far. They're
going to push you over the edge.
And then you're not going to be
interested in them anymore.
But do they realize what they have lost?
Will they ever wake up and finally see
everything you have done for them?
Because I know that for many of you,
you did more for the narcissist than
they ever did for you.
You may have done more for them than
anyone ever did for them in their lives.
And I don't think they're entirely
unaware of that.
I think they do know that you gave them
a lot more than other people they were
with.
Which is why they often try to return.
Because it's not easy for them to
replace you.
Not many people are willing to go above
and beyond for them.
Not many people are willing to be
controlled.
They're not going to get along well with
them without fighting or trouble.
They're not going to agree with what the
narcissist is saying.
They're not going to have that same
level of threshold as you do.
They're not going to be so tolerant.
So, what happens when the narcissist
realizes that they have left the best
person behind?
Someone who gave them everything they
ever wanted.
But they thought the grass was greener
on the other side.
The real question
isn't does the narcissist realize they
let the one get away?
It's
what happened before they reached this
point
where they are now able to see the loss.
Because they never valued you before.
They never saw you as the one before.
And it's because you were always there.
And they thought you would always be
there.
They thought you were never going to
leave them.
Because they love bombed you.
And you became attached to them.
And then they went back and forth
between the love bombing and the
devaluation.
Which kept you walking on eggshells and
trying to please them.
Until it may have felt like your world
revolved around them.
So, they thought you were never going to
go.
Which is why they didn't need to change.
They didn't need to work harder.
But this is really how they ended up
shooting themselves in the foot.
By becoming accustomed to your
consistency.
Your kindness, patience, empathy, love,
and understanding.
They didn't appreciate your loyalty.
Because they become accustomed to it by
habit.
So, they didn't think you would ever
leave.
You provided them with a sense of
emotional safety.
And yet, they mistook it for boredom.
The more that you gave,
the more invisible you became.
Because they gradually stopped
appreciating you.
They expected your unconditional love to
always be there and remain unchanged.
They thought it was never going to go.
And that is the biggest mistake that a
narcissist makes.
The biggest mistake they make is to
expect this from you.
It's really the difference between you
and them.
They believe that this is going to
continue and be like this forever.
And that is the reason why nobody sticks
around. Because nobody can cope with
these behaviors.
Nobody can cope with this treatment.
But they believed that someone better
was waiting.
They really believed
that someone else was going to be able
to do more than you.
Because they were never fully invested.
Their love was based on conditions.
While you were expected
to provide them with unconditional love.
They expected you to idealize them.
To let them do whatever they want
without any accountability.
So, that's how they're able to leave and
move on so quickly.
And just forget about you.
Because they always think the grass is
greener on the other side.
They always think someone better is
going to come along.
Because they never bonded with you.
So, it was never about how great you
were.
It was never about them appreciating
you.
And these days,
narcissists are all over dating apps and
social media.
It's very easy for them to be in contact
with other people.
But when you give from yourself to a
relationship,
it is fulfilling.
They don't experience that
because their way of seeing people and
relationships is based on conditions.
So, they always think the grass is
greener on the other side
until one day they've seen everything.
They've had all of these relationships.
And all that's left for them to do is
remember how nice you were to them
and to realize that they let you go.
Because you see, reality always catches
up to them.
Every relationship or interaction they
are in may have a honeymoon phase, but
it has an expiry date.
It doesn't carry on the entire time.
So, it becomes boring just like they did
before.
And then they stop investing.
And if their manipulation and control
often damages new relationships,
because eventually the other person
starts to see through it.
So, the narcissist repeats themselves.
>> [music]
>> They do the same thing again with
someone else.
It's a cycle. It doesn't change because
they never work on themselves.
They never realize anything about
themselves, so they're never going to
change.
They're never going to be any different
from what they were with you.
And they're never going to know who they
are.
That is why they do the same thing over
and over again expecting different
results.
Because even though you may not be in
their life anymore,
you may remember how they were
constantly comparing themselves to you.
And when they leave you, the comparisons
don't suddenly stop.
They start comparing how you were to
this new supply because you left an
imprint on them.
They liked how that felt
when they had control over you
and you did whatever they wanted you to
do.
So, they start craving that again.
They start looking for it in other
people.
And this may not always happen
immediately.
Sometimes it could be the next supply or
it could be several supplies after you.
But at some point they will start
comparing them to you.
And it's not because they miss you. It's
because they miss what you represented.
Because they didn't bond or connect to
you.
So, it's about what you gave them.
That's what they're going to be missing.
It had nothing to do with love.
It was about how you made their lives
easier, how predictable you were, and
how much admiration they received from
you.
None of this is about love because they
lack empathy.
So, they objectify people.
They view people as tools to serve and
complete them.
Which means that it isn't something
worth worrying about.
Because they are never going to see you
in the way that you see them.
They are never going to miss you like
how you miss them.
So, instead of focusing on how much you
miss them
or how you wish things could be
different,
you need to take a step back and
recognize that you're giving [music] all
of your energy to someone who really
isn't ever going to be anything good for
you.
Because just think about how much you
gave to this relationship and how much
you didn't get back.
And how much you are willing to accept
in a new relationship going forward.
You need to realize your worth.
Instead of thinking that they're ever
going to be worthy of you.
Because that's what this is really
about. You know you're better than that.
They couldn't love you the way that you
love.
And you were thinking that one day it
was going to be different.
Or that they would love someone else the
way that you loved them.
But that's only because they take your
way of being
and your love language.
Because they don't know who they are.
They don't know how to go forwards.
So they keep looking back to remember
how you treated them. And that becomes
their template or guide.
It's not because that's actually who
they are. They just mimic you.
And eventually you will realize this.
You will become more aware of these
dynamics.
And you will see
that they really don't have any ideas of
their own.
