WHAT KIND OF CLOWN CONCRETES OVER THE CARPET ?? !! 🤡🤦🏽♂️
Watch on YouTubeVideo summary
The video documents a challenging renovation project focused on restoring a large, double-sided fireplace that runs through the entire height of a two-and-a-half-story house. The homeowners are tackling a significant structural issue where the original chimney breast has been compromised by previous poor repairs, leaving loose stones and bricks that are not properly tied into the surrounding masonry. Their primary goal is to remove these unstable elements and rebuild the structure using reclaimed brickwork and new stone blocks to ensure safety and stability. The process involves carefully cutting back the existing walls, removing large, unsecured pieces of stone, and preparing the area for a complete reconstruction that will accommodate a modern log burner while maintaining the historic character of the property.
A major obstacle encountered during the work is a massive slab of concrete that has been poured directly over an old carpet in the living room floor. This unexpected addition complicates the excavation process because the concrete acts as a heavy, solid base that cannot simply be lifted away; instead, it must be broken up and removed piece by piece to access the underlying structure. Once this obstacle is cleared, the team proceeds with removing the cast iron surround and taking out the bulk of the loose masonry from both sides of the fireplace opening. They plan to fill the resulting void with new concrete up to the level of the floorboards to create a solid foundation for the new blockwork, ensuring that the rebuilt structure is securely anchored and capable of supporting the weight of the chimney above.
The reconstruction strategy involves using lime mortar to work with the old brickwork without causing damage, as traditional cement would crumble the historic fabric. The team installs new lintels to span the wide opening created by removing the central bulk, carefully tying the new stone blocks into the existing walls to prevent future collapse. They also install a hose pipe system inside the chimney breast to manage water runoff from the roof, directing it safely to the ground rather than onto the floorboards below. Throughout the messy and dusty process, which includes dealing with soot that has permeated their clothes, the renovators work methodically to tidy up the loft and upper floors before focusing on the intricate masonry work required to finish the fireplace safely and aesthetically.

Well, that's another first for me.
Wonder why this concrete won't come up.
It's a huge piece of stone which goes
from there to there. That's very zoomed
in.
Right.
Day something
day five.
Hopefully the worst silver it anyway. No
more. Well, bit of bit of just bit of
slate to go in the loft for the pearling
and then we can get the uh
get the long acro dropped and taken
back. These have to stay but these are
ours. We can leave those here. Um this
is today.
So spoke to the fireplace man.
So basically we have to start coming in
from this side.
Take all this off. Take all the cast
iron bit out. I'm not sure about this
bit. I should imagine that's getting
changed, but um we need to get it back
to the original square fireplace that
was originally built and basically copy
it all the way through the chimney
breast. So quite deep this one.
So we've got
hopefully well we're going to have a
length on the front skin
and then think three more skins behind
it. So, I'm hoping that's we've got to
the back of the fire the with three
skins in there.
So, hopefully we've got enough
flintless.
So, it's a matter of taking a big hole
out this side, putting the lintils in,
patching up, and working our way out
and hopefully nothing collapses. But
this this wall, this is a rebuild cuz
it's all bricks with paint on. So,
they're reclaimed. So, this has been
changed in the past,
but um it's staying as a log burner
double aspect. So, it's right way
through.
If I've mentioned that before, I'll edit
that out. But, um yeah, we're going to
get this um get this done today and at
the same time tidy all three floors up.
Start in the loft and work our way down.
It's not too bad upstairs. This just
needs a bit of a brush and a quick
hoover and then obviously we'll get it
all spotless when we leave.
So, let's get some tools together and
start making a mess again.
[music]
>> [music]
>> Hey,
[music]
Hey, hey, hey.
[music]
>> [music]
>> Okay.
Heat.
Yeah.
>> Pull the top out of there.
Come on.
Good.
Heat.
Hey, Heat.
When you're patching up that doing that
point up top, there's a little bit of
bridge to go in there. See?
80s later.
>> Yeah.
[music]
>> [music]
>> back.
[music]
Hey, hey, hey.
[music]
>> [music]
>> As usual, nothing straightforward for
us.
I'm pretty sure that skin is the skin
I've gone through on the other side. So,
it's what is it? 1 2 3 4
five or six skin's thick.
One, two, three. One, two, three, four,
five. Yeah, six. Six in a bit.
>> We need three more links.
>> No, because
the gathering in there isn't on there
and it starts over here. So,
>> right.
>> Basically, we need to take all that all
that bulk out right down
[cough] and then lint front, lint back.
We got [snorts] a spare lint now. Okay.
>> But if you look at the cheeks,
look at your side.
What do you see?
>> Only one brick wide.
>> No, it's not brick.
>> It's solid stone,
>> is it? Yeah.
>> Oh, yeah.
>> Which means we can't just put a little
in there.
But I'm pretty sure the fireplace man
said we need 760
gap
and that is a meter I think. to check
>> 1 m 30.
>> 1 m and 30. So,
so um
>> half a brick pillar.
>> I think what we need to do is just skin
it up in block.
Let's skin a block up this side. Skin a
block up that side. Plenty ties into the
brick work. Stick the lintle across the
block.
Same over there. And then there'll be a
big there'll be a big what 400 mil
chasm. So we should imagine they could
stick a board on onto that fireboard
with a hole in it for the flu. I'm just
guessing. But I've asked the asked Neil
to contact the fireplace man to give us
some guidance. And then obviously we
need a height where we're going to put
lintil in. [clears throat]
>> So our lintils won't be long enough
anyway. Hm.
>> But they would just be the right size,
wouldn't they?
>> 1,200.
>> Yeah. But one's 1 m and 50 in it. So,
I'm just going to crack on. Take all
this bulk out. Take everything out. Back
to that skin. And obviously when once we
get a bit further down, we're going to
find the hole we've made behind that.
Um,
and it's all it's all self-supporting up
here. It doesn't need propping. As you
can see, it's gone up like that.
That's how it falls when it has isn't
props. This, as you will have seen, just
pushed out. It's an absolute mess.
So, whoever did it in the in the past
and it was all loose. Someone said,
"Come, have you got a brick?" Don't
think so. Just plaster over it. You can
put your hand through it there.
>> You definitely can now.
>> Yeah.
So, we'll have we'll have an early break
now and then get back stuck into it. So,
yeah, we smell the soot again now.
[cough]
[clears throat]
It's
>> loads of it. Freaking horrible. [gasps]
Our clothes have been washed twice.
And they still smell of salt.
Right, let's go and have a bott cuz I'm
hungry. I'll get back to this episode.
Try to let stuff fall cuz much more
dust.
I'm going to keep some pick clean
on
Oh,
we found a live body in the chimney
breast.
Or is it a pelter case trying to get out
here? That's going to drop that.
Heat. Heat.
Heat.
Right,
we're through
that channel tunnel. We've just found
France.
So, the reason we're um chucking it
through that way now is that that's the
that's where the windows with the skip.
So, we're just chucking it through here.
Less walking for Alex.
>> Yeah. And uh
we're through the worst of the soot
anyway. So, that's a good thing. I just
I just need talking through the anatomy.
What's going on now? There's the uh the
stone there. Look at the state of that
massive big piece of stone. Wonder how
they held that up while they built
around it.
That's bonkers. That
to make sure we put uh plenty of ties in
that. Give it a bit of uh help.
Wow.
Anyway, let's get the rest of this bolt
out. This bolt's not doing it giving it
any strength. This is just loose inside.
It's not tied in. There's no eders in
it. There's no ties. It's just bulked.
So, um, yeah, let's get the rest of this
out.
Hey, hey, hey.
>> [music]
>> Hey,
[music]
hey, hey. [music]
Heat. Heat.
and thank thanks to the people who've
actually said that uh it's it's fun. But
um thanks to the others who've let my
experiences really made me
elevator
back into
something
just
behind. Simple move. Heat.
Heat.
Heat. Heat.
Oh, a battery.
Let's put a battery in. Oh, I think
that's a good time to call it for lunch.
That's it. We're down to sand.
The whole house isn't that low.
Foundation's not low.
As you can see, the cheeks big lumps of
stone.
So, no um no fitting little into there.
That's one piece. That one
huge.
A few of the old tiles buried underneath
the half and they redid it.
What's up there?
Dark be a minute.
>> Let's see. Bring it this way a bit.
>> Does it gather in just to one flip?
>> I think so.
>> Yeah.
>> Can't see any lights at the top. No,
>> no.
>> I think I've got an idea for a
thumbnail.
>> Yeah,
>> I'll try and if you put me mask back,
I'll try and grab onto the wall. So,
your feet are dangling.
That's another first for me. Wonder why
this concrete won't come up.
I've never seen carpet used as
reinforcing concrete before, but it
bloody works.
That does not always shift. Even the
grips are still down underneath the
concrete. Oh yeah. Yeah,
this carpet just concrete over it. Be
right.
It's worth the reinforcing off cuz it's
not attached to the jam now. It's
popped. So, it's not actually it's
floating now. So, it's breaking a lot
easier, but it's still got that carbon
fit.
Unbelievable. So, we can take these
bricks out now and concrete the whole
thing. So, I have to get some extra
stone and cement. get that sorted this
afternoon and then concentrate on the
block work and lentils tomorrow. Focus
back again tomorrow. So, we'll come in
for half a day and get it finished
tomorrow.
Right, let's carry on with this.
>> [music]
[music]
>> Hey, hey, hey.
[music]
>> [music]
>> Need to get more concrete in there.
Hey,
>> get more pump in there.
I'll leave you charging up. I'm going
get some more stuff then.
>> Say again.
>> I'll leave you charging up. I go get
more some more stuff.
Right. I've been for supplies. So, we've
got enough stuff for the concrete now.
Hopefully. Bloody hope so.
Six bags. We've got um
Yeah. Um,
stop saying. We're going to concrete up
to the level of the floorboards.
Fish green screen down obviously cuz
everything's quite damp. The um it's
going to be a lot damper soon because we
need to cut this this opening out on
this end.
And
if you look here, you got this huge
piece of stone which goes from there to
there.
And then you got this bricks return.
Well, they're just half stacked on top
of each other. And that's the the the
wall. Oh, in the soot. And then you've
got this side, which is again this is
well, three pieces of stone. You got
thin piece up here, piece here, and then
a big piece here.
And then you got these bricks again. And
not many look like they're tied in.
So if we chop chop it back to that and
sail a block work through then you just
have these valves sailing loads of
valves just sitting there. So we're
going to cut it back to here.
But up the block to it. Tie it in there.
Tie it in there. Same there. Cut it
back. So cut it back tight with this
this brick here cuz that's the most
sticky out one. And it's it does that
it's 20 more wider at this end than it
is at that end. So we'll keep the blocks
tight there and bring them in and bring
them in here and square it all up. But
so like I say cuz it's lime mort. It's
all brick work. If we start backing
banging that it's just going to crumble.
So we got we've got the host pipe in. So
I've never had a hose pipe in the living
room. All these first on this job that's
for the water suppression. And instead
of cutting it from the room, we're going
to cut it from inside the chimney. So
the water ends up in here
in the ground rather than on the floor
and in the floorboards.
That's the theory. Um we're going to
have to set something up here. You know,
put our board up here. I
>> was going to say put the board behind
you.
>> Yeah, put the tripod behind it and
something just to stop the spray. But
everything's covered up anyway.
So that's the plan. Alex's going to get
a mix in. Then we'll I'll get the cuts
done and then maybe get the bit work out
today. We're running out of space now.
Again, we've got our money's worth
again.
Should be okay.
And then um I picked everything up, so
it's job knock.
>> What's the uh gauge I'm doing?
Uh
>> just doing the bucket gauge like you uh
211. No, it's not. Is it? It's 421.
Hey,
>> 421.
>> What do you mean?
>> Four buckets of ballast. Oh, no. There's
no sand, is there? I
>> was going to say, yeah, we're done.
>> Four four ballast to one cement.
>> Okay.
>> Yeah, it's it's premixed ballast.
Um,
right. That's it.
Hey.
Got
a
Heat. Hey, Heat.
Data
doo doo doo doo doo.
Heat. Heat.
>> [music]
>> the wrong side. I don't know. They
actually got me over there. One with the
concrete in lentils in. I hope that's
the okay height for the uh stove. There
you go. We had the camera on the wrong
side. So, this where the action's
happening. Got me lentil in. Not very
happy about this bit. This is a really
dodgy corner, but the plaster
everything's holding everything in place
while we make it safe. So, I've got a
few more bricks to go in there. That's
all top point is ready. That's all in.
And the bricks are very dry. So that
goes off pretty instantly.
So I'm going to have to go and get more
stuff for this concrete. It's not going
very far. It's a big old hole that we've
dug there. And then the two cheeks, as
you can see, the cut back. And then the
con the blocks are going to flush with
that tomorrow.
Give us a
800 opening. And we've got 900 to the
bottom of the lintil. So you'll see the
you'll [clears throat] see this the blog
burner and some of the flu going up and
obviously you can see straight through.
That's the idea. And log burner heats
rooms then as well. Should look nice. I
just hope the height's okay. The minimum
630 which is way down from that. It's
like a foot down. So we've gone for a
bit higher. So obviously you can
appreciate the uh double aspect of it
then. So I'll stick it on time
somewhere. Alex just getting
more gear and carry on with dep
[music]
I got to
do it.
>> [music]
>> Heat.
[music]
Hey, Heat.
>> [music]
>> Doo doo doo doo doo doo doo.
[music] Heat. Heat. N.
[music]
Heat. Heat. N.
>> [music]
>> Hey, hey, hey.
>> [music]
[music]
>> Yeah.
There we go.
What's left over?
Oh, that's uh about half done now all
together. That's very zoomed in.
That's better.
There we go.
It's a little uh
it's getting buried under slate anyway.
So, yeah. So, that's one lintil in
packed up. Concrete's in. So, now it's
just build this up, get get it tied in,
get the lintil on that, and then patch
our little pyramid up.
So, yeah. Now, I need to go and do an
outro for that cuz we're not done it
yet.
doing this intro the day after finishing
this because that was the worst days
I've ever had to go.
It's done.
That's um done that this morning. That
is packed up with sleep now where that
sleeper is.
That sleeper what's it called?
Ping.
So that's all packed up and tight under
the headers that the ping sat on.
And yeah, can't really see up there cuz
I've got the lights gone, but you can
you can see in this time it looks nice.
And there you go.
Lovely stuff. [sighs]
first weekend. Never um been involved in
a patch up of a uh 2 and 1/2 story
fireplace
thing. [music]
