What are those orange balls on some
powerlines? I'm Maggie Villiger. I head
up the science editing team here at the
conversation and I've always wondered
about those balls. So I asked Rui Bo who
researches power systems at Missouri
University of Science and Technology to
explain how they work. Officially,
they're called aviation marker balls or
visibility markers and their job is
simple. Help airplanes and helicopters
avoid crashing into the wires.
Powerlines can be surprisingly hard to
see from the air. They can really blend
into the background especially against
mountains, rivers and near airports
where aircraft fly closer to the ground.
So utility companies add these bright
orange, yellow or white spheres to the
wires to make them stand out.
