“We’re here to compete!” 💪 | Marco Rose’s FIRST Premier League press conference | vs Manchester City
Watch on YouTubeVideo summary
Marco Rose has arrived in the Premier League with an optimistic outlook, emphasizing that his squad is well-prepared and united following a successful pre-season campaign. Although he acknowledges some injuries, Rose remains satisfied with the team's composition, noting that they have retained key players like Alex Scott while signing new additions such as Alvareo Rodriguez, Antonio Silva, and Juan Lu Sanchez early in the window. He expressed no rush to make further moves, stating that the current group is in a good spot and ready for the challenges ahead. The club's promotion to the Europa League adds a significant layer of complexity, but Rose is confident that with hard work and proper management of player workload, his team can successfully balance domestic league demands with European competition.
Rose defines success not by specific table positions or numerical targets, but by maintaining the team's identity through front-footed, aggressive play against every opponent. He highlights the daunting nature of their opening match against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, acknowledging Bournemouth's historical struggles there while expressing humility and determination to seize opportunities. When asked about adapting his approach for the Premier League compared to other leagues, Rose insists that his core philosophy of playing forward and being brave will remain unchanged, though he admits minor tactical adjustments may be necessary for specific high-level fixtures like those against top rivals.
The transition from Andoni Iraola is framed as a natural evolution rather than a correction of failures, with Rose noting that the club specifically sought a manager who shares Iraola's front-footed approach to maintain continuity. He respects Iraola's work and views his own role alongside Enzo Maresca at Manchester City as equally challenging, dismissing any notion that one task is harder than the other. Rose praises the decision by the club not to sell key players during the summer transfer window, viewing it as a smart move that ensures competitiveness for both domestic league success and European qualification.
Despite the formidable challenge posed by Pep Guardiola's former squad under Maresca, Rose refuses to speculate on whether City will struggle without their previous manager, instead focusing entirely on his own team's ability to compete. He points out that Manchester City remains a top club with a world-class squad featuring stars like Phil Foden and Erling Haaland, regardless of who is in charge. Ultimately, Rose concludes that while the pre-season results can be unpredictable and exciting, the true test begins at the weekend when his team must face these elite opponents directly to prove their worth on the pitch.

Marco, welcome to the Premier League.
How's everything been shaping up for you
and the team ahead of the new campaign?
>> Um, so far so good, I would say. Um, we
had a a really good preseason. I settled
in very well. Everyone supported me and
um the new coaching staff. Um, everyone
put it um a lot of effort in in the
preparation and and all the things
around.
So uh we feel well prepared for for the
upcoming season for the upcoming game in
in in Manchester. Of course we suffered
um some injuries um but it is what it
is. Um now we are looking forward to
start.
>> Some sources have said that the squad's
95% complete. You've already signed
Alvareo Rodriguez, Antonio Silva, and
Juan Lu Sanchez. Are you still hoping to
be active in the rest of the transfer
window?
>> We are not in a rush. So we are really
happy with with our squad. We we kept
the group together. We we signed um
quite early um the players. You
mentioned it. So everyone everything is
in a in a good spot and um yeah now we
are waiting that the transfer window is
closing.
>> The club are in the Europa League for
the first time. It's such an exciting
new chapter, but it obviously brings a
lot more of a loan next season. How are
you going to balance the demands of
Europe and the Premier League? Yeah,
it's getting a a big big challenge. Um
first of all, we um had a preparation to
get prepared for for this big uh
challenge. Um so we trained hard. We
trained uh a lot and um now as you said
we wait for the draw and then we going
to see how we play, who we play and
where we play. Um the most important
thing stays um the the daily business,
the Premier League, um the cups and of
course we are looking forward to play
play in Europe to show our club to
representate our club uh in Europe and
um yeah finding the right balance in uh
um yeah giving the players the right
load um is um is a big job but I'm quite
sure that we handle it together um with
the staff.
You've spoken about your relationship
with Jurgen Clark. Have you been in
touch with him about some advice about
the Premier League?
>> No, I was not.
>> And look, you admitted it would be a
tough job to follow what Anthony did
here. So, what does a successful season
look like for you in the Premier League?
>> You are not the first one who asked me
this question. Um, I think um we should
not talk about numbers or or things like
this. We we should talk about the way we
want to play. um we want to um keep and
show our identity. We want to play front
footed. We want to compete with with
every opponent um we get and we start
with a with a really tough away game in
in Etiad. So um uh it's the the first
big challenge and of course we in this
business everyone knows that we we need
points um to feel comfortable and um to
get in the right place. Um but at the
end I don't want to talk about um yeah a
final place in the table or something um
like this. We want to win games. We want
to play well. If we do it, if we play
well, we got positive results and um
then the things are going in the right
direction.
>> You just touched on your opening Premier
League fixture against Manchester City.
Bournemouth have never won away at the
Yeti had. So is that challenge a
daunting one or is it exciting for you?
It's uh it's exciting for for sure and
um
if we never won there so maybe it gets
time to to win there. So um I I think we
are uh humble enough to know how
difficult it is to play there to to play
that quality of uh of players. Um but on
the other side we always that's what I
said we always look for our chances. we
we see our chances and even on on Sunday
we try to to win the game.
>> And Enen Enzo Moresco is also taking
charge of his club for the first time.
What are you expecting from him?
>> The things I saw so so far with with
Chelsea or um now with with City there
um is a clear idea, clear philosophy.
You know what you get, you know what
they want to play. Um uh you see the
processes uh they have the approach they
have it's quite intense against the ball
um high pressing and with the ball you
know what quality you face and um even
there um you you you see an clear idea
um in established um play. So yeah it's
getting again a tough challenge but um
we are quite positive.
>> Thank you.
>> You're welcome.
>> Hi. Hi, good to see you. Um, first of
all, just when you talk about what how
City might play in terms of the way you
play, um, your teams have always scored
a lot of goals. You've scored a lot of
goals in pre-season. Um, but are there
any things that you need to adapt in
your approach coming into the Premier
League from how you've played in other
leagues?
>> I don't think so. If your approach is um
um playing forward um being frontfooted
um then maybe you need some adaptions
about the the uh physical approaches or
things like this. But the the the
approach in general stays. Um that's for
sure and that's what we need at the
weekend as well. We will not change our
approach because we face a a top uh
opponent. Um uh so we want to play
forward
>> as a new manager coming in. Very often
when a new manager comes in, they come
in because the previous manager maybe
hasn't been getting great results.
You're following a manager that was very
popular, had great results for
Bournemouth. How do you strike the
balance between continuing what was good
before and making your own mark and
putting your own stamp on the team and
getting across your ideas?
>> Yeah, it was his decision to to go and
the club needed a new coach. So, someone
has to do the job. That's for sure. If
he's not here anymore, and there need to
be another one, and that's me. And and I
love to be here. It was a conscious
decision um because of the talks and um
the the observing of the team that I
that I did. Um,
and I'm here because the club thought
that it's a good idea to bring a coach
who has a similar approach to the to the
former um coach and um that's what we
want to maintain the front-footed um
approach um playing forward being brave
in in in every game. And of course if we
speak again about the weekend because we
play Manchester City um you need to
adapt some uh things. So it means you
need to find the right moments to be
brave. Um you need the right moments to
be front-footed if you get this moments.
You have to use them and um yeah
therefore we always talking about the
match plan um the week before um and now
we are waiting for the game on Sunday.
Um you touched before on on um how
Moresca might play. He's taking over for
the first time. First Premier League
game. You're you're doing the same.
Who's got the tougher task? You
following Andon here or Moresca
following Pep up at Manchester City?
>> I think it's the same for him. Pep said
he needs a break and um and so was there
to to do the job. So um to be honest I
don't care because I love to be here and
I respect and really admire the work of
of Andoni and I'm quite sure that Enso
admire the work of of Pep like like like
everyone but now the clubs has new
coaches everyone um tried to uh do his
best um with with the club and um yeah
that's why we are working for Manchester
Manchester City and me for AFC Bombos.
>> And you talked before about you're happy
with the way the squad is at the moment.
Just touching on not just the new
signings, but the players that you kept
the likes of Alex Scott, there was talk
about him across the the summer. How
important was it to you personally that
that the club held on to players such as
that? Key key players and they're going
to play an integral part in your squad
this season. I think it's not just
important for me, it's important for the
club as well because um again we
achieved a big big um um thing with be
playing in Europe next season and
therefore you need to be competitive.
Therefore you need to have a competitive
team and the club decided to to not sell
anyone and I think it's a smart
decision. This was part of the talks
when I when I when I came here and
everything um came like we uh we we
spoke about and um uh as I said we
signed three players we didn't sell so
um the squad is in a in a really good
spot.
>> If you look across the Premier League a
lot of clubs with with managers just
starting out a lot of signings have been
made across the Premier League. Is it's
hard to predict how things are going? Is
it is it exciting going into a season
where maybe aside from Arsenal Arsenal
who are the reigning champions and are
quite settled everyone else is almost
starting a fresh and so no one quite
knows exactly where everyone is. How how
exciting is that from a managerial point
of view?
>> It's always exciting every every season
you can play at top preseason and then
you lose your first game or you lose
every preseason games and then you win
the first five games. So preseason is
preseason and of course if you had a
world cup or European championship
before some players came late come late
um late signings especially in the
Premier League mostly the market starts
to run um sometimes really really late
so um especially at the beginning it's
uh it's very exciting but at the end um
we have to play every opponent um we
start Manchester City and um It's a It's
a tough challenge.
>> Just [snorts] finally on Manchester
City, are they still as much of still as
strong as ever with it with Moresca in
charge taking over from Pep or do you
think that's obviously going to be
losing someone who's been as successful
as Pep is going to be something that
they've really got to struggle perhaps
to to overcome?
>> I'm quite sure that it's still a top top
club and they have a a top coach with
the with the top squad. Um, if you watch
the preseason games before, I watched
three of them, then you wouldn't expect
um the result of of the Arsenal game.
Arsenal did really well in in
everything, out of possession, in
possession. They scored after 29
seconds. So, the games runs like
sometimes like um they run and but
Manchester City had some really really
good preseason games. um really
front-footed um with high intense with a
high intense approach um and with the
ball we know the quality about of the
players um in the in the back four we
know the quality of the wingers we know
the quality um of Phil Foden of Erling
Harland of Kovachic so um it's still a
top team with the top coach but um uh
I'm not here to praise um Manchester
City I'm here to uh compete with them at
the weekend.
