[music] This is the daily tech news for Tuesday, September 15th, the eyides of September 2026. We tell you what you need to know, give you the important context, and help each other understand. Yes, we're going to try and help help all of us, myself included, to understand what I'm supposed to say right now, but particularly Google's Google Book event, which happened today, but we can't really talk about it, but we can still talk about Google Books. Does that make sense? >> Why Google? >> I don't understand. >> Why? We'll tell you what we know. I'm Tom Merritt. >> I'm Jason Howell. >> Let's start with what you need to know with that big story. [music] >> Yes. So, we've been talking about this is it's no secret that an event happened in New York City uh just this morning, a big Google book event. Um but apparently it is a secret as far as what happened there because we can't talk about that. But we still have things to talk about, some information that is being discovered, some of it being announced by Google. Um I I pretty much can promise you that we'll talk about the event details sometime next week. Uh, Android Faithful's Ron Richards was there. I can confirm that, but uh, can't get the details yet. So, you're gonna have to wait for that. What do we know about the Google book right now? Why are we even talking about it? Well, uh, we do know that Google plans to open pre-orders for the new Google book um, on Monday, September 21st, that is next Monday, 9:00 a.m. Eastern, so 6:00 a.m. Pacific, if you want to get up real early on the West Coast. Um, this is of course their laptop that is powered by Gemini Intelligence and uh it's going to be it sounds like there's a lot of partners uh in line here. Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo. We don't have any specific models named yet by Google. Um, we also don't have anything as far as pricing or shipping dates. However, the Mac Observer reported on exclusive Lenovo images and a product sheet for the Lenovo Google Book 15. This might act as kind of an example or a sampling of what you can expect from other manufacturers. I'm guessing [snorts] this is a premium laptop, metal chassis, 15.3 in 120 Hz OLED touchscreen. Uh Intel Core Ultra 5 325 processor inside up to 32 gigs of RAM. You know, it's it's got Wi-Fi 7. It's got dual Thunderbolt 4 ports. It's got a Google key on it. So, you're used to seeing like, you know, like a Microsoft key on your on your Windows machine or whatever. This has a Google key. We don't really know what it does, but maybe we can guess around what that function might be. Here. Um, the laptop also has a 5 megapixel RGB webcam. uh physical privacy shutter so you can flick it closed and and get some privacy. On the outer lid is the glow bar and this is a thin multicolor strip of LED light. I'm assuming it's LED um that Lenovo says provides at least right off the top it provides battery and charging status. So, okay, that's interesting. I mean, it's kind of like the the little glowy thing on the back of the Pixel, I suppose, but in bar form. >> Who knows? Uh there's a fingerprint reader, facial authentication listed as well. Lenovo is also set to offer an AI mouse for Google book. That's what it's called, AI mouse for Google book. Uh which will share the multiolor accent uh that is shown on the laptop. No word on what makes it an AI mouse. But I think it's relatively safe. I don't know. You tell me, Tom. You know, we know that the Google book has this ma magic pointer functionality, which is essentially Gemini intelligence baked into the pointer. So when you know it hovers over a certain thing, you can get immediate uh use it as immediate context for Gemini. I mean, might that be what an AI mouse is? I don't know. That's more software than hardware, but I'm not sure. >> Yeah. I'm like, can a not AI mouse not use magic pointer? I'll be curious as well. Or or does it mean like they used an LLM to fine-tune the precision of the pointer? Probably don't doesn't mean that. It probably just means it can do >> the magic pointer thing like any other mouse could, but that's my guess. That's silly. Uh, let's just call it a mouse. >> I think it's also silly that Google had this big event that we know Ron was at, uh, and that Ron's going to talk to us about once, you know, everybody else knows about it when pre-orders start on Monday. Uh, I I I don't quite understand. Maybe they're going for the double punch, which we're falling for right now, which is talk about it now, talk about it Monday, right? Um, >> that that that could be what what's up. Uh because today the official news is pre-orders will open Monday. Usually you tell people when pre-orders will open after you've told them what they're going to order though. So it's a little odd to me. Well, and it kind of plays into Google's uh well playbook from the last couple of years with its hardware events, not you know related to Google book, but like its pixel events where it does like this year for example, the Pixel event, the actual event, the live stream event happened in the late afternoon, evening, but embargos for the news that would be announced at the event happened in the morning. >> Yeah. [laughter] >> And you know, and and then they do these trickle release of certain details ahead of time. I mean, it really is just, I guess, effective marketing because what it does is it it puts into the new zeitgeist more reasons on more days to talk about their thing that's coming up. >> Yeah. So, I don't know. I'll talk about it more on Monday with Ron probably. >> Yeah. [laughter] >> Today, the news is uh Google has shared a bunch of information about Google Book with people that it told don't tell anyone [laughter] >> and we want to know. I mean, but we already kind of know, >> but then they asked you to order it. It's one thing to share. I totally I don't do embargos myself and I know you do and that I have there there's all different ways of approaching this. Embargos are fine. NDAs are fine. What is odd is telling everyone in the world you can pre-order our product. >> And we all know that you've told a lot of people about the product. So maybe we know that you had an event. >> Be cool if the rest of us knew what it was too. Uh what are you trying to hide is what it makes me wonder. Like why? Usually you delay information like in the movie business, you delay the reviews until launch day to kind of bury the bad reviews. Uh I don't get the impression that that's what Google is doing here, but it is sort of the it is sort of why you would do that sort of thing. And I I'm having a hard time coming up with another reason why they would do it that way. >> Yeah. Man, I mean, maybe maybe if it was only their product, like if it was truly just a a you know, a Google book by Google, then the maybe we want to bury it or maybe we want to push this stuff until the very end might make sense. But they've got so many partners like there's going to be so many different >> Yeah, there's so Yeah, this is more of a Microsoft style launch than than a Pixel style launch. So, and maybe that's it. Honestly, you may have just hit on it. The fact that they've got so many partners means there's a lot of cooks in the kitchen with a lot of different requests and requirements. Whereas with Google, they can be like, "Yeah, we'll just make the Pixel announcement in the afternoon and do the NDA lift in the morning." We're Google. We control the whole thing, so we'll do whatever we want. >> Yeah. Are you at all excited about the Google book? I mean, this is a, you know, redux of Chromebook or >> like I I don't mean to sound flippant when I say that, but like I don't know. Give me the details. I know we got some leaked details about Lenovo, but I try not to get too excited till I see the official details. So, uh I'm I I am excited to learn more. How's that? >> Yeah, I that's that's good. Uh, so let's get to the briefs. >> Yeah, Valve did this weird thing where it announced its product details and let you order it at the same time. It's crazy. Uh, the Steam Frame starts at $1,059, which is a lot for a VR headset. There are some reasons why. It's a very comfortable headset. There's a lot of features on it. Also, just stuff costs more now. Uh, and Valve is also not subsidizing it with a bunch of monetization of your personal information. Uh, so the reviews are coming out of embargo now. Most reviewers seem to see the headset as an ambitious, expensive firstgen VR product. uh that may not appeal entirely to the mainstream VR buyer uh but you VR enthusiasts might find something you like. Digital Foundry compared the high price tag to the MetaQuest 3S. MetaQuest is $700 cheaper. Our Technica pointed out that 6 GHz wireless adapter makes PC streaming a strong selling point uh for the Steam frame and it has a low 5 to 10 millisecond latency in testing. CNET and ours though both agree that the experience is still a little buggy and crashy uh so far. Uh and game support is hit or miss out of the box. You have to look to see what games are supported. That applies to VR, but also the fact that it can play PC games, but it can't play all PC games. The headset is relatively lightweight, very well balanced, 440 grams, that's around a pound. Uh ours Technica's Kyle Orland sees the headset as a little bit overengineered, a little bit underbaked. Uh, and he suggests that maybe the less expensive Quest 3S uh or three make more sense to buyers unless they want Steam VR or they don't want to give any of their information to Meta or Facebook or they want HalfLife Alex which has the unique ability to run on the chip. It's embedded in the machine. Uh, or you can run Linux apps in desktop mode uh on the Steam frame. Overall, the headset sounds like a pricey product with some rough edges uh to smooth smooth over. While we're talking about things you wear on your face, uh HTC's Vive Eagle smart glasses are hitting the US and Gadget has its review of the glasses saying they are also too expensive at $500. Uh and and Gadget called them inessential in how they integrate AI and take pictures. Uh I I don't know, Jason, you you use these smart glasses quite a bit. You review a lot of these. Uh, I'm I'm guessing you have a take on the Vive Eagle, but I also want to talk about the Steam Frame. >> I mean, Vive Eagle sounds interesting, but you know, you got to justify the fact that those glasses are $500 and the the winners in the room, or at least the ones that have been mostly adopted and the ones most people that are actually wearing these camera glasses on their face, um, are are the Meta ones, which are, you know, $200 to $300 cheaper. So, um, yeah. So, you know, take it what it's worth. HTC is not the same com hardware company that they used to be and um you know so I I would love to check them out but it sounds like they're pretty darn expensive for what you get. Kind of a rocky experience >> but then $1,59 or more >> depending or more >> you can you can spend what I'm trying to find the terabyte model uh starts at $1,299 if if you want to spend even more uh for the Steam frame. But, uh, it does seem like there is something there for somebody who really is like, I don't want to live in the meta universe at all. I do want the most advanced, most comfortable headset I can get. >> Mhm. Yeah. And it and it looks like a a nice headset. You know, anytime you're starting kind of a a new like hardware effort like this, yes, of course, out of the box, game support is going to be, you know, limited. You got to start somewhere. It does look like a nice headset though and I you know I I just wonder again like this question I feel like every it's very cyclical around VR which is a VR moment happens suddenly everybody's like okay VR's back this time it's going to work and then you know it kind of fades and I feel like now at least my own perception is we're in a bit of the lol place and it's like okay so then who does this headset actually appeal to you know certainly it has its audience >> it appeals to the hardcore Steam PC PC gamer certainly, but not every one of those wants to do VR. >> Uh, and the fact that it's built on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 >> is a compromise. And it compromises, that's one of the reasons you can't play all the games on it. >> Uh, but you can stream all your games to it, right? So, >> yeah, that's and that's a big plus. That's what some of the reviews are really leaning into is like it's a great, you know, game streaming device. Yeah, it's a great companion headset for your PC, which is why I'm like hardcore PC gamers who want to do VR. This this is attractive, but even not all of those are going to want to pay more than $1,000 for it. >> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Totally. Um Well, what about a little printer for your photos on your phone because apparently people are really, >> if we can't interest you in a full VR headset, perhaps a mobile printer. >> Yeah, you know, that's that's the obvious next step, right? Fujifilm is launching the Instax Link wide 2. It is a Bluetooth smartphone printer that connects to a smartphone clearly uh and prints onto 3x5 inch Instax wide instant film. The printer supports Bluetooth 5.1. It charges over USBC. It can also print directly from Fujifilm's Instax PAL and XT33 cameras. So in that those cases, you don't need a smartphone to to connect the two. It just goes right from the camera. Um, it includes Photo Mixer, which is a free Instax linkwide app that lets users select images from the phone. You can choose a bunch of there's a whole selection of collage style layouts. You can remix apparently up to five times before you edit and print out that final image onto that um the photo paper. Um, yes, the app has I think it said something like 1,600 stickers. So, if you like your stickers, just go nuts cuz >> we added stickers to your stickers. >> There you go. also filters, emoji, you know, all the accuchant that you might or might not want. Um, there's also a QR print mode which lets users embed links, locations, uh, hidden messages, sound clips into photos that I guess you share online. And the printer costs $180 in the US, which is a little pricey. Uh, not including the film that you printed on. >> Yeah, you you usually have to keep buying the cartridges uh to to put in these things. I have a Kodak one that does more photo card size uh prints that I use to to print out like shots that I've taken at at concerts and stuff and then I hand them out to people. Uh it's very slow, >> but it's good at what it does. Uh and so I think if you're into this more wide 3x5 format, uh this is a good improvement. And there's a big speaking of, you know, there's a subculture for PC gaming on VR. there's a subculture for for these kinds of, you know, printing from from your phone. Uh or if you have the camera, being able to print direct from the camera is kind of cool, too. >> And having the wide shot uh the kind of the wide 3x5 layout, you know. Yeah, sure. This good for landscapes. I don't know how much landscape work you're doing on these little Insta prints, but um but like group shots or do you remember Huawei used to call that groupies, which is an unfortunate name for >> groupies. Oh my gosh. [laughter] >> Yeah. Yeah. >> Uh, that didn't catch on. Uh, for some reason I I don't know. [laughter] >> Uh, wow. That's that's a good poll. Um, I think what's if you're like, why are you talking about a mobile printer? Uh, everyone is. That that's kind of why we put it in here. It was high up on tech meme and Google news today. Like people are really interested in these 3x5 mobile printers. So if you're in a rush, look to your left, look to your right. Someone near you is. [laughter] >> Yeah. Yeah. There you go. >> Uh, a team led by Seaman Ma at Eunan University has developed perovkite solar cells that work underwater. Perkite is cheaper to make than silicon and can convert more energy and take more interesting forms. So, it's more bendable and that sort of thing, but the reason you see silicon in solar cells more often is because parapskite degrades faster. Uh however the lower light and temperatures of the sea can help slow the degradation and paraposkite can be tuned to make usable energy from that low light in a way that silicon cannot. Uh to keep the water from degrading the material they built a water repellent layer. They developed an additive that limits some of the common ways that paraposkite breaks down and tests found it maintained 99.6% efficiency after 40 days submerged. They estimate that it could last about five years before that efficiency dropped below 80%. Uh so you could do a lot of self-powered seaborn vehicles, probes, cargo ships or or very, you know, very small cargo ships. I don't know if you're going to do a big massive cargo ships, but but ships uh that could use these kind of solar cells to provide power. >> And they can't go th those things can't be super duper deep, right? because you go further down. >> They actually did some pretty deep they they did some pretty deep tests on it. And obviously, you know, the conversion uh drops as you get too far from the sunlight. So, you're not going to >> you're probably going to if you're talking about submarines, you would have to surface closer to the water to charge basically and then have batteries on board uh to store it. Yeah. >> Okay. That's it. >> But but yeah, being able to do this bars. [laughter] >> Also, you could put solar farms out to see. >> Yeah, that's cool. >> You know, and not worry about >> it's not it's not it's not decorating the landscape. It's hidden from view to us. I guess >> it's ruining not to the under I know. Not to the underwater life. >> Looking like a land mammal. >> The uh the underwater life is not my back. >> Uh pool [laughter] lagoon. >> Lagoon. Uh yeah, I I I think you know, yes, of course, uh there there are there are limits to what we we you know, we could do in other ways, but it does provide more flexibility uh both figuratively and and or literally because these things are bendable. >> Very [snorts] nice. >> Uh well, folks, we would like to provide you with a gift. Glass Imaging was founded by former Apple engineers who developed Apple's portrait mode. So, begin your wild speculation on why they bought it. It's interesting. >> Gosh. Yeah, it's uh might have something to do with uh Mr. Iive. I don't know. [clears throat] Just just wondering. >> After a call to boycott Sony digital gaming for a week in protest over Sony's decision to phase out physical media in 2028, video game industry advisor Cirana's Matt Piscatella wrote on Blue Sky that quote, "There is no significant change at all in player count or engagement in our tracking." I was kind of afraid of that. I think I may have said that might be the case. Oh well. GM just announced, this is hell freezing over news. GM just announced the 2027 Chevy Silverado and 2027 GMC Sierra pickup trucks will include Apple CarPlay. Uh also Android Auto, but they runs on Android Automotive, so that is less surprising. Uh GM previously dropped CarPlay and Android Auto from its newer EVs. But RS Technica reports that the press release for this new system for pickup trucks uh says it was built quote as a single scalable foundation across electric gas and diesel powered vehicles. So who maybe they're changing their mind. A >> lot of people happy that happens. Techrunch's Julie Bort has a profile on artificial intelligence underwriting company aka AI. I don't know which one is easier to say. Um which is developing ways to keep agents under control. It's modifying third party auditing and certification, specifically SOCK 2, from traditional security to apply to agents. AIU's standard for agents is called AIU1. It runs an agent through around 5,000 tests looking for things like jailbreaks, uh, hallucinations, data leaks, and then a 100page report details when it was safe and reliable, when it was not, and has cursor, lovable, jarby, and 11 Labs as customers. So, this isn't fixing the foundation model safety issue that everybody was talking about all weekend. This is fixing the I would like to use this agent in my enterprise business. Is it safe? which there has not been an answer for. It was more kind of like I don't know try it and find out and Fafo is not an enterprise compliance model. So this is an alternative to that. >> There you go. Microsoft released an outofband update for Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 a week after its record-breaking patch Tuesday release on September 8th. New patch fixes problems with HyperV and remote desktop services and almost fixes the USB problems. It restores multi- channelannel playback on USB audio class 1.0 devices. However, there are a few other devices that remain affected and fixes are coming for those soon. Every time any device has an operating system update, millions cry about how the new update drains their battery and heats up their device. Ben Lovejoy at 9to5Mac has done the service of explaining why this happens and also reassuring us all that it's temporary and not actually an evil plan. By the way, in iOS, like most operating systems, a system update takes time to complete installations in the background, so you can use your device while non-critical setup completes. It also needs to index data and files for search. After all the setup is done, you usually find the battery life improves since most OS updates improve efficiency and iOS 27 promises that too. >> That is good to know. Thank you, Ben. Lovejoy. Uh 95 Google reports on leaks from someone called Lanzuk uh of unknown reliability. Uh but Lanzuk says Samsung is considering a new trifold Galaxy model as well as a slidable form factor, but no timeline on when those would come. >> Yeah, Apple, take that slidable. >> You're going to show us a slidable, huh? >> Why don't you invent slidables, Apple? >> Yeah, another eight years from now or something. >> Yeah. Sorry. [snorts] [laughter] What? I'm I'm cool with it. I'm cool with Apple's foldable. It's cool. Uh, US-based Agility Robotics announced a new humanoid robot called Digit 5. Designed to work safely in close proximity with humans. It's designed to do things like load materials, uh, sort parts, inspect items. The Digit 4 could only stack bins and had to be placed behind physical barriers. Agility robots operate in nine customer facilities. >> Yeah. So, Digit Five can just walk around on the floor. Slowly, slowly, humanoid robots are moving into the workplace. I think this is an undercovered sector. Uh Taiwan's MediaTek announced that its new flagship smartphone chip, the Demensity 9600 Pro, was built on TSMC's 2 nanometer N2P process, which Apple is using on its forthcoming iPhone 18 Pro models, and Qualcomm will also use on the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, which is expected to arrive next week. But MediaTek gets the bragging rights until then. New MediaTek chip promises 61% less multi-core power consumption and 15 to 17% faster speeds. >> Interesting. A team of phys uh physicists led by Jai Jing of West China Normal University transported quantum states in a way that encoded a 100 pixel image of a queue across 100 simultaneous channels that were spatially separated with an entangled optical resource. You'll hear this called teleportation, but that evokes moving solids. The main development is to give quantum networks more bandwidth by transmitting across multiple connections in parallel. >> Yeah, this this is about sending quantum information. So, the headlines all saying teleportation really is misleading, even though that's what they call it in in in the uh industry. And it's also like if you read into it, it would be forgivable for you to be like, "Well, wait, they're just beaming light. I could do that now. I didn't need quantum for it." It's like, "Yeah, but they're beaming the quantum state, which is an important thing if you want to operate quantum networks, which can operate at incredibly larger capacities and eventually speeds than current networks do. >> So, it's not about sending the queue, or is it? Uh pubs and shops in England and Wales may now accept digital IDs for proof of age when buying alcohol. Uh apps like Yoti will generate a QR code that can be scanned and then approved the sale. You can't use it for tobacco yet though, just for the booze. Interesting. And finally, Nicholas de Aaguar Alves, who's a physicist at the Federal University of ABC in Brazil, wrote an evaluation of the Peicard maneuver from Star Trek: The Next Generation, where Captain Peicard takes a ship at warp speed over a short distance to create two images of the ship, hoping the Fangi fire on the wrong one. I did say that, right? Right. I'm not a star I'm not a Star Trek guy. Um, I'm sorry to say. >> Why are you reading this instead of me? I don't know, [laughter] but I'm happy I got it right. Let me just tell you. Uh, he determined that the fangi would actually see three images, but the underlying physics was mostly sound. Alves published his analysis on archive under the title the unexpected effectiveness of the Pequard maneuver. Seeing three images of the same super liiminal super luminal spaceship. Yeah. Uh, this this is uh from Pequard's past. So, this is a an episode where they're going back and talking about his time on the Stargazer, blah blah blah, track track. Uh, but what's cool is this guy had always been fascinated with that episode, was working on something else, and was like, "What does this remind me of?" He's like, "All right, it's that episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation." He's like, "You know what? I'm going to figure this out." And he's like, "Huh, it actually would work better than they showed on the show." Uh, but but they mostly got stuff right. That's kind of cool. I love it. >> That's super cool. And I will say, maybe not like a total Star Trek fan, but I did watch many episodes of TNG, so I've got >> You probably watched this episode. >> I probably watched this one. Yeah. >> All right. We end every episode of DTNS with some shared perspectives. Today we have three different emails representing three different takes on the discussion of AI safety. >> Yes. And the first and most important is from Craig P, who says, "You guys are driving me crazy. The word is anthropomorphize, not anthropomorphosize. So say it with me three times, Jason. Anthropomorphize. >> Anthropomorphize. >> Anthropomorphos. >> Anthropomorphize. No. No. You're driving crazy. >> The first and abortion price. [laughter] >> Greg says, "I love your shows, but this is cringey for me." We will We swear to do better, Craig. All right. Uh the other two are a little more uh about the uh topic over the weekend. Jesse wrote uh could this call for a slowdown be a cover that maintaining the rapid pace is getting really expensive. And then regarding slowing down development or pacing, Andrew from Colorado wrote, "Software does not work that way. Slowing down means missing out on vulnerability patches and bug fixes, not just new features. Similarly, the models can't slow down all releases or they will continue to make old mistakes or not use the latest conventions. Safety first as a framing would sit better with me with my read on the realities of software development. Uh I think these are both very common perspectives. These are very representative of of things I've seen people in our community say. Uh, I don't think the slowdown is trying to save them money simply because the newer models are usually more efficient >> and the newer the current models are also in high demand and that demand is growing. Uh, and I think they would want to bring the new models in because that would make the demand even greater and it would be more efficient and they could run more of them at a cheaper cost. So, I really really don't think the pacing is like this is so expensive. It's expensive now, >> but do you agree with me, Jason, that they would actually want the new models faster if they were just worried about saving money? >> Yeah, I would absolutely agree with that. >> Now, on the safety first thing, I think that's a great piece of framing uh that Andrew is saying. Uh but I I would point out that the pacing is about the development of the frontier models, not the roll out of improvements to current models. And they're also not saying stop. They're saying, "Let's make sure that we haven't created something we can't understand or control before rolling it out. Let's let's slow down on that." They're not saying, "Slow down software development." I think that is easy to confuse. Uh they are continuing to develop software and continuing to improve current models and fine-tuning. And there's all kinds of things that I'm sure you talk about on AI Insider all the time uh that they are going to continue to do. It's just that frontier research of like what is the next model? It's less about software development and more about model development, which may be a distinction without a difference, but I think it makes it may help Andrew wrap his head around it more. I'm way I'm definitely with Andrew on safety first as a framing is a good way to look at it. >> Absolutely agree with that too. And and I think the other thing I'll throw in there too since I'm on my soap box uh is there is safety for the current models that needs to be paid attention to. And I've seen some people say that as well is like stop worrying about the theoretical risks and worry about the real risks now. And I think you could do both. You can go slow on the frontier model development to to make to make sure you're not treading into the feared waters that by the way no one thinks we're there yet. everyone's just worried we'll get there sooner than we want. So that's what the slowing down on that development is. And the slowing down is from the people who are closest to it. Uh so when you're like, "Yeah, but somebody else will get there first." It's like, "Well, they're actually not very close right now." So we can afford to slow down a little bit and keep an eye in the rearview mirror. Uh whereas the current safety stuff, I think you don't want to slow down on current safety development at all. And I'm 100% in agreement with Andrew on that, too. >> I like your soap box, Tom.
