Urban Church Planting | Lecture 2 : BC309-UCP-20260813

All right, welcome back. So, any questions? Chapter two, the Holy Spirit, our leader. So, remember to always depend on the Holy Spirit before you start anything. Right? Okay. Let's move to chapter three. Chapter three is we're going to look at uh the definition and objective of church planting. Now, what is church planting? one aspect and two is why do you want to start a church what is the objective right when you say objective mean what is the reason is it because I have nothing to do or the reason that I want to do it okay firstly let's look at the definition Matthew 28 18 and 20 Jesus gives this beautiful commission he's resurrected he's met with the disciples he stayed with the disciples for a long time and now he's going back to his father in heaven and he gives this instruction what we call as the great commission. Let's read that. Matthew 28 18 and 20 18- 20. >> Then Jesus came to them and said all authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of Father and the Son of Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything have I have commanded you and I surely I am with you always to the to the very and end of the age. >> Right? Now, let's look at three words from this passage. Right? First, he says, "Go." Then he says baptize. Then he says teach. And under teach you can say make disciples. So go baptize and teach. The Lord Jesus has commissioned us to go and spread the gospel. He said go baptize teach. All to be done in the name of the father, son and the holy spirit. Now what does it teach us? It teaches us that if we have to plant a church, plant a ministry, it is not because I want to do it. It's because Jesus has commissioned us to do it. Jesus is saying, I am telling you to go do it. That's the reason we're doing it. Then he follows it up by saying, I am with you always, even to the end of the very age. Right? So we see that the book of acts unfolds as the early disciples followed through the great commission in the establishing of communities of believers. So think of this. These 120 uh sorry uh Jesus has commissioned them. He says go and wait. 120 are waiting. Now they don't have no understanding of what is church. But one thing they know is hey Jesus died. He rose again. He is the Messiah. But he said go baptize make disciples. But before that he said wait. So we are waiting here. The moment they were endored with the Holy Spirit act in the Pentecost happened what happened the fulfilling of this started off we see that churches establishment of community of believers was started how Peter firstly he came he preached 3,000 people came into the church a community of believers started immediately almost immediately now again it is very new to them see we we must not think our situation now right because we know go to a place do research everything and then church start a church Sunday church all that was not there in them they didn't understand all they knew is God Jesus told go baptize make disciples and that's all they did that 3,000 people immediately they were trained people were trained they started sending out people the persecution happened people went to Samaria Judea different parts of the of the world, different parts of Jerusalem and outside of Jerusalem, different towns, different cities where they went proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ. It was in these self- sustaining community of believers that disciples were nurtured, equipped to continue to make more disciples. Now, look at what happened. Acts chapter was Acts chapter 2 was the empowering of the Holy Spirit. uh and 3,000 people were added into the church, right? And if you go Acts chapter 2 towards the end, we see that the the fellowship of the believers happen. Acts chapter 3 is uh Peter heals the uh lame man uh the beggar. Chapter 4, Peter and John are in the Sanhedrin. Now look at what happens after that. The gospel goes into Samaria, goes into different parts surrounding. What happens? The church in Jerusalem, first thing they did raised up leaders. Okay, we are 3,000 people. So now they heard that other churches, people are going from here and they are preaching the gospel. People are becoming believers. But there's no church. So we need to help them start church. So the Jerusalem as the main church sent people go start churches. So that's where uh Samaria, Judea, all the neighboring cities and towns people were uh you know people were the ministry was gospel was going out churches were being established. Right? A church plant therefore is the establishing of a self sustaining community of believers who are growing together as disciples of Jesus Christ. These 3,000 people, what did they do? They grew together in discipling one another. The Bible says that, you know, they shared their possessions. They were there for each other. They looked after each other. There was many healings and deliverance. And then the the church in Jerusalem sent out apostles and teachers to go and bless the other churches as well. What did they do? They were growing together as disciples of Jesus Christ. They were hosting God's presence. Wherever they went, there was an impact made because they were hosting the presence of God. Remember Peter, John chapter 4, Acts 4, Peter and John go to pray. They met this lame man. What did they do? Peter and John said, "Hey, now this is a different Peter and John. This is not the Peter and John that was there when Jesus was there." Peter and John said, "Silver and gold I don't have. What I have, I'll give to you. In the name of Jesus Christ, rise up and walk." What were they doing? That lame man stood up, walked. They were hosting the presence of God. The presence itself brought healing, right? All that they did was they said in the name of Jesus Christ rise up and walk. The presence of God fell in that place and they were healed. Later on we see Peter is walking his presence and the shadow of Peter is healing people. What is that? First they were growing together in disciplehip. That means they didn't ignore the teaching, preaching, ministry of the word, discipling one another. But they also hosted the presence of God where there were signs, wonders and miracles. Now just a question that we can ask ourselves. What if looking at these signs, wonders and miracles, they got so excited and said, "Okay, you know, let's just focus on signs, wonders, and miracles because people are getting healed." And they neglected discipling and ministering to one another. What do you think would have happened? they wouldn't have even grown as disciples. All they're doing is sitting and looking at miracles. Miracles is not going to help always. They need to be discipled into being like Jesus Christ. Right? Miracles is good. But they knew the teaching of the word was also important. That is why later on we see what Peter did was he came up with a good solution. He said, "Listen, we will do the teaching, the preaching, all the outreaches you'll do. We will do the teaching, preaching, and the ministry. All the administration work, all that you do. Don't involve us. You tell us what to do, we'll do. But teaching, preaching, discipling, we will do." So they they what they did was they compartmentalized it very well. There was good administration. So Peter said, "We will do the teaching, the preaching. We'll commit ourselves to this prayer, teaching, preaching, discipling one another." All the solving problems don't come to me. Go to somebody else. Right? I'm just telling you, right? How they were able to be more effective. Raise up leaders, send them. And what happened? They were influencing cities, towns, villages, wherever they went, they were hosting the presence of God. And when they went there, people experienced the presence of God. People were experienced the power of God. They were healed. People were ministered to. And uh so others also came to know Jesus through this uh uh through what they were doing. So we see that in the church in Jerusalem, the church in Antioch. Sorry I missed out Antioch because what happened was because of the persecution many of the believers went to Antioch. And when they went to Antioch, this church became a powerful church. What happened? Already apostles, prophets started over there in Antioch. And that's why Peter did an amazing thing. He said, "Bnabas, do one thing. We'll handle everything here in Jerusalem. This is the main church." See, the church in Antioch needs help. They are a growing church. There are apostles, prophets, they need some disciplehip. They need some nurturing. They're very new. There are a lot of gifts and uh that is there in that church, but they need help. So, you go there. So Barnabas goes to Antioch and he's ministering there and he realized, hey, I can't be alone. I need some help. Who does he go searching for? I think I've said this million times to y'all from first year onwards. I've been saying this. Who does Barnabas go searching for? >> Right? You should know all this at the back of your head over next year you'll be preaching. So you should know this what's happening. The church in Jerusalem is 3,000 people. So that's what I say, right? When as as students always picture it, okay, 3,000 people, big church, Jerusalem, persecution happens. Many people go away. They go into different parts. Judea, Samaria, Antioch. But the church in Antioch was something special because uh that church started growing right and and it's about like you know apostles prophets are all rising up there but they need help. So from here they're sending like how we send APC missions same thing they go Barnabas go. So Barnabas goes he he realizes wow this is a beautiful church I need some help and he remembers oh some 14 years back Paul I had met him he had come to Jerusalem and we you know we let him go in that basket and after that we don't know where he is so Saul Saul of Tarsus let me go to Tarsus he goes finds him brings him to Antioch and they both are serving there for almost a year and after that one Here he comes to Jerusalem. So you see what's happening here. What was the key? The nurturing, the training, the building up of other churches as well. We see, right? So what do you mean by self- sustaining? Number one, self- sustaining and leadership. They were good leaders. We know Peter and John were leaders in the church. But if you look at Acts 15, James is now the leader of this church. So we can say there are probably around 8,000 9,000. You can keep almost 10,000 people in the church in Jerusalem, right? I'm just giving a rough estimate, right? Okay. You can also say because ministry was rampant at that time. People were becoming believers very quickly. Right? So for example, there are 10,000 people in the church in Jerusalem. So you got Peter, you got John, the heads of the church, but I'm sure there would have been hundreds and hundreds of leaders inside that church, right? There would there would have definitely been prayer groups, smaller groups meeting in different places, house groups, right? All of that would have been there because that's what we see right in scriptures. Small groups, house groups meeting in different places and then you know coming together having um the Lord's meal, building, nurturing each other. All of that was happening but all part of the church in Jerusalem, right? Building each nurturing each other, discipling one another. These leaders leaders were raised up. I'm sure there were many leaders. Barnabas was one of them, right? when they chose Barnabas go and help the church there and that's how everything unfolded and eventually we see that the leadership became strong and by the time you go to acts chapter 15 uh in the council of Jerusalem we see that Silas is there, Barnabas is there, Paul is there but James is there interestingly James is Jesus's half brother. The same brother who didn't believe in Jesus, who said you are out of your mind, who said you know to Jesus if you're a messiah why you're coming here go to the feast of the tabernacles spoke rudely to Jesus that person is now leading the church in Jerusalem. What happened? He saw this person Jesus was somebody else. He was really the Messiah because we saw him crucified. We saw him being put in a tomb and now we saw him alive. James also became a believer and now he's leading the church and of course we we later on we see a lot of leaders being raised up. So very important. How can we apply it in our ministries? Now you may be starting a church right when you start everything is on you. You do the administr. You are only sound and setup. You are only PPT. You are doing everything. You are opening the church. You're closing the church also. You're cleaning the church. You're setting up. Now, don't make it one so story. Oh Lord, what do I do? You know, no, it's the initial phase. It's okay. No problem. You have to do it. I remember doing it right in Mangalore. go open the church, lead the worship. Somehow I should try to find somebody to do the PPD. Otherwise, no PPT also, right? For the lyrics, I used to had that remote control. I used to change the lyrics and play guitar. What to do? Nobody's there. Then clean the whole church, close it, come home. Now, it's the initial days. It's okay. But always remember that you have to become s self- sustaining. So slowly start raising up leaders, right? U and you know how we do it here, right? We we set up teams. You say, okay, we need leaders for these places, right? So this comes we will look at this will come more in the natural dynamics, right? Uh on how to build teams. But let me give you an example. For example, you know 15 people in the church. Okay. If you need three teams, one team is ushering. So ushering will do open the church, clean the church, keep the table, lodge table ready and welcome people to come in. Two, you need a sound team who can you know set up the sound equipment and look after the sound. Three, maybe one uh two people for prayer team, right? Prayer or it for now enough, right? You don't need too many people. So you say, "Okay, these three teams, we need people." Slowly as your church grows you will see people right okay and you can recognize hey he can serve or she can serve right and you slowly get people to start serving of course you get them into leadership when we say leadership don't always look at it as okay who's going to come next and preach in the pullpit no can also raise people to be leaders in teams right so then slowly maybe somebody in the church says you know you know this person can pray. She he or she's a prayer warrior. Say, "Hey, you know what? Why don't you start a prayer team, right? You like to pray. It's not a burden for you. So, you come if you want to come to church evening 5:00, right? I'm I'm picturing myself in in a place where you guys are, right? Come do every witness day 5 to 7. You do. I'll come and sit. But you lead the prayer. What are you doing? You're making something sustainable. you're there but this person is coming leading the prayer and it's an anointing upon him or her right and people will come maybe two three people or so it's okay but it makes a difference you're encouraging this person to step into leadership through the gifts and the anointing that God has given them right so don't always look at okay who's going to be next yeah that that time will come but you get people into leadership slowly Now you may say pastor only 10 people in my church in the 10 people at least three people should you should have in mind to become leaders yes or no right otherwise if you're happy with your 10 people 10 will remain 10 only we don't want that we want to grow and so we want people to grow into leadership two self- sustaining financially when you say financially what initially as a church you may not be sustaining financially right you're you're small you may not get too many offerings if if I look at it in from your aspect from your understanding if you're a from a village or a town the offerings may be very small so what can you do uh initially you may need to take time and start the church we look at all of that in uh dynamics of church planting But you may need to take time. Okay, I will pray. I will work for 2 years, right? And then I will start the church so that I have enough funds just to manage for myself for at least one year. Don't be in a hurry. Oh, God tell me start told me start a church, next week you stop working and then next month you start the church. No, no, no, no. Don't do that. What does Jesus Jesus himself says? If you're going to build a tower, first sit down. Doesn't he say that? He says, "First sit down. Write down what it's going to cost you. Do you have the money? Do you have the resources? Do you have the people? Write down and see whether you can do it. But don't put your hand to the plow and in between take it out." No. First try it down. Count the cost. see what it takes. Do you have what it takes? Then take it forward. Otherwise, don't do it yet. Don't put your hand to the plow and then in between say, "Oh, I I don't I don't know what to do now." No. So, if you are, you know, looking financially, you're saying, "God, I don't know what to do." Get a job. Work. Nothing wrong. Work for two years. Work for three years. Two years. How can I work for two years? Who will do the ministry? You only will do the ministry. Don't worry. Don't be in a hurry to start something and then you know the whole thing has stopped. No. Plan well ahead. Okay. Financially let me plan. Lord, Holy Spirit, you're with me. Give me the wisdom. How do I plan? Okay. You're you're going to do. We'll talk about all this later. But just sharing a few things. You're looking at where I want to start. Uh which place I want to start a church. Okay. What is it that I need to do here? Basic needs. Now there is no point of you saying oh the Lord wants me to start a ministry. You leave your job, sit at home and keep praying the whole day. Will anything happen? What will happen if you quit your job and keep praying the whole day? You tell me what will happen. >> Time will go then. What? What? Time will go anyways if you pray or don't pray. But what will happen? God has told you plant a church. You know that God has said you will become a pastor. So you quit your job and you're sitting at home and praying. Whole day you're reading the Bible and praying which is very good. Yes or no? Reading Bible very good. Prayer very good. But what will happen? Anything will happen. Why? You're not doing anything. You're doing something good. But what is the first principle? Labor. Work. God's principle is you work, I will bless it. You don't work, I have nothing to bless. So what would you do? You would a good way to do it is work. Don't share your vision with everyone. Whoever's going on the road, don't stop them. You know what? One day I will start. Don't say all those things. You met one friend, you know him for 2 weeks. Don't share your whole life story to him. Keep your vision to yourself. There are only one or two people you should share it with. If you share it with everyone, it will become a laughingstock. This fellow wants to start a church. He doesn't know the spelling of church. What you'll do? Oh yeah. I know what is spelling of church. Gone. Don't do that. What I'm what I'm saying is you have the vision. Let it be burning inside you. But take your time. I wanted to join Bible college immediately. I I became a believer. But I knew I'm not going to ask my parents to pay the fees. I'm an adult and I don't want to go free Bible college all those stuff. I said okay I will work. I will save money. Already I was in a job right? I'll work. I'll save money. I work for two years, right? I made sure that I have enough funds to to pay for whatever I have to pay. You understand? But was the two years easy? It was very difficult. Sometimes I felt what is this is you know not saving enough. It's not coming. You know, you feel all those anxiety and no don't worry take your time. And I believe I don't know if I joined earlier maybe something else I don't know but God knows at the right time at the right place how to open the door of opportunity for you maybe if I joined earlier I may have finished and gone back to the workplace maybe there was no need here I'm just saying or maybe if I joined later already there was enough staff faculty we don't need God knows You plan prayerfully. Ask the Holy Spirit to lead you and then you step in. Don't plan without preparing. So prepare yourself. In the meanwhile, you plan. You get it? Something that we're doing now in AP uh at East is see we're we're about 200 almost reaching 200. So we we planning okay once we reach 250 or 300 people we need a bigger space now we want to reach that number we are working hard towards it we are doing as much as we can to you know reach out but we're also planning ahead on what to do right so being financially stable it'll take time eventually one day as your church grows you'll be able to financially uh sustain yourself, right? But in the beginning phases, try to have certain funds with you, right? Cuz you don't depend on others. The moment you depend on others, no, that feeling of, you know, uh leadership goes away. Don't depend on others. Leadership is influence. People will come. If you keep asking people, begging people and saying, you know, I need this money, I need that money, you know, leadership is influence. People themselves will come and give you if because they'll see the vision inside you. Leadership is presence before the speech. Before you speak a word, people will know you're a leader. That's what leadership is. You don't have to speak. Sometimes the greatest leaders sometimes don't even speak a word. they just sit right. So first one leadership to financially right be plan ahead to be financially stable especially now with our nation going through all of these problems and the FC and all of those things you need to be extra careful and plan very wisely right get help do research read about it don't say I am building God's kingdom I don't care about this government the government will put you in prison okay Then don't say God what do I do? God will say you don't know you don't know how to read you should read no you should prepare yourself no right you you understand what I'm saying right three community it may take time for the community of believers to become self- sustaining but that is the eventual go go goal that we should work towards remember church planting and ministry is always about envisioning How many of you when you joined Bible college saw that you will graduate? Did you see it in your mind's eye? No. You only saw the lunchtime and next time. Did you see it in your mind's eye? Hey, one day I'll be standing there and taking my certificate. Once you envision that, no matter what problems happen here in Bible college, it won't it won't shake you. Yeah, you may have days ups and downs, okay? But you've envisioned it in your mind. One day I'm going to walk up that stage, take my three-ear certificate, degree certificate. Nobody can stop me. Problems will come, yes, storms will come, yes, but you've envisioned it. That's the power of envisioning here as community of believers. Initially, it may not happen. But as your church grows, you become sustaining. Always envision for your church. What do you want to see? Envision for yourself. Envision for your church. If you don't envision, you're just going through life just the way it is, right? So envision. What are some of the objectives here? Some of the key objectives in planting local churches can be identified as establishing and hosting God's presence. number one objective. Why are we planting churches? We see it in the book of Acts. If you go to Acts, we see that when they were in Jerusalem, 3,000 people were added into the church. God's presence was there. Were there miracles? Plenty of them. Then from there, what happened? They went into u Samaria. They went into uh Antioch, neighboring places. Wherever they went the they were hosted the presence of God and out of which you we see that Stephen was there right Stephen did so so many wonderful things the Green Jews who were going through problems that time Stephen came up from then Philillip acts chapter 8 Philillip goes and he talks to the Ethiopian unic and the Ethiopian unic becomes you know accepts Jesus takes the gospel into Africa right and then we see the great apostle Paul the church in anti Acts chapter 11. Apostle Paul's ministry you know um first missionary journey he goes to Galatia which is about five places in Galatia. Uh Cyprus, Pacidian, Antioch, Iconium, Lististra, Derby. He goes in there wherever he went he planted churches. So it was hosting the presence of God in all these places. So when Paul's writing to Galatians there are few churches in that list. Then what does he do? He goes to the second missionary journey. He goes into some of one of the most powerful missionary journey, most effective anti. He goes to Philippi, Corinth, uh Thessalonica, Ephesus, all the powerful power centers of those times. What does he do? He goes in and he establishes God's presence. Right? Thessalonica, Beria, Athenans, Corinth, everywhere he went, the fact that we are talking about it now is because he went and he hosted the presence of God there. So now when you go and plant a church, remember, you're not just a physical building there. No, you're hosting the presence of God in that place. the presence of God. When you have worship, you have the word, you're hosting the presence of God. Why do you think the enemy is fighting for stopping churches or with all these, you know, the anti-conversion bill or whatever that's happening where we're seeing persecution to churches. Why is it why is the enemy using people to uh destroy churches? because he knows churches establish and host the presence of God. Anyone can come into a church and if he experiences the presence of God, sometimes you don't even need preaching. They experience the presence of God, they become believers. The enemy is afraid of that. So he doesn't want that. So you can be in a small village, you're hosting the presence of God. Two, you're discipling new believers. people become new believers, you disciple them, you teach them, enable them, empower them. And uh that's a very very again a very important aspect of church planting when the apostle Paul and you see in the early church in Jerusalem, church in Jerusalem also when they were growing, they discipled new believers, right? They wanted to see believers being raised up. Paul chose Timothy, Titus, all these young people to serve in his team. And what happened? They were influencing their region. And finally, they were multiplying by planting many more churches, right? And we see that in a ripple effect in the book of Acts. Plenty of churches were started. Not everything is mentioned in the book of Acts. Right? So, for example, in uh I think it's Acts uh 60. Is it not Acts 16, Acts 17 when he goes to Athens uh towards the end we see that verse 34 Acts 17:34 a few men became followers of Paul and believed among them was Dionis a member of Aeropagus also a woman named Dearis and a number of others so a church was planted in Athens but we don't have a letter to the Athenans right so what am I trying to say wherever Paul went he was able to plant churches and there was a multiplication right it's not like only you know Ephesus Corinth Galatia this is the only churches and maybe been many other places that he had started churches uh but you see the aspect of multiplying and that's what we are also doing here at APC we want to multiply we started with one then we started no uh north south east west and Mangalore for and then again all over India we're planting churches and that's the bigger vision to be an apostolic church but remember all these things take time right it takes time but you need to envision it you need to see it in your mind's eye all right any questions no questions >> can you say that on the mic so that those online can hear. >> So many of them them say that uh God called called us for full-time ministry. So we we we doesn't need to work anywhere. Then how can we in initial stage how can we manage the financial >> so here's the thing see I've said this before and I say it always there's no such thing as full-time and part-time ministry. You're in ministry. You may be working 9 to5 in the corporate office. You're in ministry. You may be working in as a pastor. You're in ministry. You may be working as a electrician. You're in ministry. You may be working as a pilot. You're in ministry. Whatever you're doing is your ministry. Now, this whole concept of God told you not to work is totally wrong. It goes against God's principles. God himself is saying work. He told Adam till the garden you work. That's a principle of God. Look at people that God have used. Look at Nehemiah. He was working. He was a working professional. He was a cupbearer. God didn't choose people who are sitting under the tree enjoying themselves. No. Look at Daniel. What was he doing? Administrator work. Do you think Daniel was just relaxing half the time? Oh, was looking after the administration. So, it was not like every time God is he's thinking of God. No, he was working. But three times a day he spent he remembered God in his work. Right. Do you think the you know Cyrus and these other kings were say oh Daniel or you're a good prayer warrior so you only be the leader. Was that the reason? No. The Bible says they could not find any fault in his work. Right? Look at Joseph when he became second in command. He worked. He didn't say okay now I'm second in command. I'll sit. No he worked. So work is a principle from God. I think the best example would be Apostle Paul. If you go to the end, go to Acts chapter 28 verse 30. Read 30. Now Paul in this, let me give you context. Paul goes to Rome. He's come from Jerusalem to Rome and he's waiting for his trial. meaning he's finished a few trials with Felix, agria, all of that. Now he's waiting for the decision to be made. See what happens. Verse 30. >> For two whole years, Paul stayed here. Paul stayed there in his own rented house and welcomed all who come to see him. He proclaimed the kingdom of God and taught about the Lord of Lord Jesus Christ with all boldness and without hindrance. Now Paul is in Jerusalem. For two whole years he stayed in his own rented house. Who paid his rent? You think he would have begged people for money? The Bible says we know that Paul was a tent maker. Same profession as Aquilla and Priscilla was a tent maker. He if Paul is saying if you don't work don't eat. Paul himself worked. I'm sure he worked. He saved money. He took a ticket by ship and he went. Of course, people gave to him, but he also worked. So those who say working is wrong, don't listen to them. That's wrong. It's biblically it's not right. It's against the word of God. God all through the Old Testament, New Testament shows us that God is a God who wants us to work. Yes, there will be times like I said, right? Uh people get into full-time ministry immediately and all of that. If that's the case, that's different. But if God's calling you to work, work, nothing wrong in it. Work, save up money, right? work, save up money and maybe there'll come a time that you can launch right your own ministry. So that time you don't have to ask anyone anything you plan and you do it yourself right. So this is all you know full-time part-time ministry it's all man-made. There's no word there's nothing in God's word that says that. What was Stephen doing? serving food. They were working. What was Peter doing? Do you think Peter was simply sitting? He was fishing. He would have done fishing. He would have done you know what he normally did. He would have done that. Only thing now he would have got busy. Oh 10,000 what 8 to 10,000 people in the church. So slowly that would have taken second place because you know this work is here. Church work is there right? So God knows how to also transition you into these phases right he may tell you work and do ministry do it then slowly he may say okay church is growing leave it leave the work I will and he you'll know it you'll know that it's God calling you you'll have peace in your heart right but never say work is you know they use that word now what do they use know I've heard many people they uh there's some word that they use carnal or something uh uh anyways nothing is there's nothing wrong in working we have to work actually it's the opposite if we don't work that's wrong work save up money plan prepare step into what God has for you right very important is don't be in a hurry.
