UNCCD COP17 video series featuring Xiangjun Yao, Director of FAO work with SIDS, LDCs and LLDCs

Xiangjun Yao, Director of FAO's work with Small Island Developing States, Least Developed Countries, and Landlocked Developing Countries, highlighted three pivotal messages from a recent round table discussion centered on sustainable development. He emphasized that the agriculture sector, encompassing livestock, crops, forestry, and fisheries, serves as the backbone of national economic agendas for many nations. Beyond its economic role, he noted that these sectors offer tremendous opportunities for youth and women while playing a critical part in improving rural livelihoods, thereby linking food production directly to social equity and poverty reduction. The second key message addressed the current status of food security and nutrition, underscoring the urgent need to strengthen systems that ensure access to adequate nutrition. Yao explained that supporting Least Developed Countries (LDCs) requires a robust partnership aimed at boosting their food systems through transformation. In this effort, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has deployed a significant portfolio, currently operating nearly 500 projects across LDCs with a total investment of 2.5 billion USD. These initiatives are designed not only to enhance agricultural productivity but also to build resilience against climate shocks and market volatility that often threaten vulnerable populations. In addition to direct project implementation, the FAO plays a vital role in facilitating international negotiations and providing normative services to guide policy-making processes and governance improvements within these nations. Yao stressed that the organization is committed to expanding its support and deepening collaborations with partners to achieve more meaningful results. He concluded by expressing confidence that increased cooperation will lead to greater success in supporting LDCs on their journey toward sustainable food systems, ultimately fostering a more equitable and secure global food environment for all.
