We had a game recently that had the same
bizarre play happen two different times,
two different outcomes. This breakdown

wants it up and in gets it on the second
pitch. Now let's get strike two down and
then let's go back up for strike three.
Oh, it hit some in the hand 100 miles
per hour and running into his body. That
doesn't feel good. Let's take a look at
the replay going in in in right on the
back of the hand. Ow, but look at that
bat. Did that barrel come around because
a swing supersedes a hit by pitch. So it
would not be a hit by pitch. It would be
a swing. An umpire Mike Estabrook is
going to tell him that
while he's hurt. So he's kind of calm
about it and he's like, "Yeah, so you
went around. So it's an out. Yeah, once
it's your hands it's a it's a dead ball,
but he went around. So he's out. Well,
what you could challenge is to see
it could be a foul ball, but
maybe it hit his bat and not his hand.
But if it hit him, I have to rule him
out. So a spot it turns to the dugout to
his video guy and he's like, "Yeah, it's
the rule if what do you have a foul
ball? No? Okay. So okay, so no foul
Okay, so I got to rule him out. You're
right? Well, you're out." Sorry cuz you
swung Yeah, you swung and that's Yeah,
I'm sorry about it. I know your hand
hurts, but you're out. And Peña is like,
"Okay. Damn, bad way to start the game.
I struck out and I got hit in the back
of the hand with a 100 mile per hour
fastball. That stinks." First base
umpire just picking stuff off his face,
feeling good about his call. Locked and
loaded, ready to go. Peña sits down,
hand hurts. Guy's going to come look at
it. Yeah, come look at it. Let's move to
the top of the third inning now where
Mike Trout heard of him? He's at the
plate and they're going to go sweeper
that actually goes across the entire
zone, doesn't get called. Then we're
going to come up AND IN AND
OOH, SAME THING. Mike Trout takes one at
his hand, but this time first base
umpire says no swing.
He didn't swing.
I'm telling you up coach
stop.
Yes. No, get out. You're gone. I told
you to stop. Don't argue with me. I
called you out. I SAID,
"HOW DO YOU NOT CALL THAT A FULL
SWING?"
How do you Well, HE DIDN'T SWING. WHAT?
I don't have a swing there. Are you
me?
So, what about Jeremy then? Was that a
Was that a swing? Jeremy went on
that one. AND NOT ON THAT ONE? HE did
not go on that one. YOU GOT TO BE
KIDDING ME. IT'S A FULL
SWING. HOW THE IS IT A FULL SWING
on the one with Jeremy if it's not a
full swing? I don't have a swing
on this one. NO WAY. IT'S A BAD
horse call.

>> IT'S A BAD [screaming] CALL.
>> YEAH?
>> IT'S A BAD CALL.
>> OKAY.
>> GOD DAMN. IT'S A FULL SWING.
>> Not a swing.
>> Bad It's a bad There's no way.
>> I think you should look at it.
>> OH, I'M GOING TO GO LOOK at it. And I
want you and I want you to look at it.
>> Okay.
>> I want you to look at it. I want you to
look at it.
>> Trout makes his way to first. Despaigne
makes his way to the clubhouse. And
umpire feels great about it. Let's take
a look. What do you guys think? Same
swing? Both went? We going to see
something similar? Something different?
Same angle, same camera, and that was
fast motion. If you slow it down, on the
bottom you've got a bat that really
breaks his own, comes in front of his
body. And on the top in Trout, you've
got a bat that never really crosses his
body or the plate. So, I think the
umpire did a good job. Here's another
overlay where you can really see the
difference and you can see Pena's bat
pretty far, Trout's bat never gets far.
So, I think it's a great call. Now,
there was even more good umpiring in
this game. Top of the fourth inning, two
on, one run game, full count and that is
put high and far and going, going and
caught in the crowd. Home run? They sure
think so. They're celebrating. What a
catch. Runners rounding first. Pitcher's
like,
"Uh, they're pumped. Yeah. You see that?
Woo!
That's awesome." Now, Alfonso Marquez,
the umpire's like, "Nah, nah, nah, nah,
nah. Let's come chat and let's put the
runner at second. I got fan
interference." Great call by Alfonso
Marquez right away. Now, before all the
umpires go talk, manager of the Angels
says, "Hey, Mike, Mike, Mike. Does it
matter that it wasn't catchable? Because
it's not catchable and I runner is on
the go. I might you have to check. You
know, we're going to get together and
talk. Let me chat with them, but
appreciate the the heads up." He's like,
"All right, cool. Appreciate it." So,
was it fan interference or was it going
to be a home run? I think he
I think we can all agree there. He
reaches over, he catches that. I don't
think that's going over the fence. The
sideways look. I mean, nice play by the
guy, but not his ball to grab, so to
speak. So, good call. Now, where do you
put the runners? It's a judgment call by
the umpires and they're going to take a
look and kudos to the runner on first
base because he could have assumed this
was a home run and kind of broke down
and just jogged around the bases, but I
think once he hit second base, he's
like, "Oh, that might hit off the top of
the wall and if it does, I need to be
booming."
So, by the time it hits the fan's hands,
right
there,
our runner from first, he's halfway to
third base already. So, you can you can
say, I believe positively, that one,
that ball was not going to get caught by
the outfielder cuz it was going to hit
the blue Geico part of the wall there.
And if it did that, he would have easily
scored cuz he put himself into scoring
position by running a hard 120 ft from
first base. And that's what the umpires
say.
>> After crew consultation it is determined
that there was fan interference.
>> Now, this guy's bodies are just
laughing.
No. No, I didn't I didn't do that. And
they're just dying. Like, you were so
excited. You thought you were great.
Now, you might get kicked out.
Meanwhile, the runner, good for him. He
rounds and scores. So, I think we've got
not only three good calls by the umpires
in this game, but I think they handled
each situation really well. They kind of
met the tone that needed to be. Like,
you just got hurt, but sorry, you're
out. Okay, we're going to chat anyway.
I'll go ask about that. And first base
umpire got those calls correct. And, you
know, don't argue with me.
