Video summary
The video documents a walking tour and lunch visit to Ukulhas Maldives on its first day of exploration, beginning at the Kala Beach Hotel before heading out to find local dining options. The hosts explain that while many hotels on this small island have their own restaurants with included dinners, they prefer trying external establishments to experience authentic local cuisine. They stumble upon a restaurant named Olumathi, which offers significantly cheaper prices compared to popular tourist hubs like Dhigurah; for instance, beef noodles cost only $4 here versus around $10 elsewhere, and desserts are roughly half the price in this location despite being at a similar distance from the capital.
After enjoying their meal with views of turtles and fish tanks inside Olumathi, the couple takes a stroll through the island's main street to showcase its layout and amenities. They note that Ukulhas is very compact and easy to navigate because walking north or south inevitably leads directly into the ocean, making it impossible to get lost without hitting the water. The area feels surprisingly quiet and peaceful compared to other islands like Hulumalee, with numerous small hotels lining the streets alongside local shops selling groceries, souvenirs, SIM cards, and even dress rentals for sandbank photo shoots.
Throughout their walk, they observe various aspects of daily life on Ukulhas, including a grocery store stocked with fresh fruits like mangoes and bananas, solar panel installations on buildings, and ongoing construction projects that suggest future development or renovations. They also point out the presence of an ATM machine where visitors can withdraw both US dollars and Maldivian rufiyaa, as well as several banks and convenience stores scattered around the island. The hosts conclude by recommending a stay duration of three to five days per location before moving to another island, allowing travelers to experience diverse environments without feeling bored or overwhelmed in such small communities.

So hi everyone. This is a walking lady
in Amadon and today is our first day in
Ukas and this is our hotel the Kala
beach hotel and uh we are going for
lunch. So we are not familiar yet from
the place. So we are just going to
explore and find some restaurants here
and there and we will see
>> where you want this way or the other
way. Uh I think he said this is the main
street.
>> Yes. Okay, let's go.
>> So he said you cannot get lost here.
It's a very small island and it looks
like this.
>> So this is another hotel.
>> Another hotel. Yeah.
>> And most of these hotels they have their
own restaurant. We do have our own
restaurant as well. But we just want to
try something outside because we already
have a dinner included.
So I see here is kind of looks like
happy taste. What is this happy taste?
Happy taste. That sounds like local. No,
it says arrow there.
>> Arrow there. Okay.
>> Yeah, see there's arrow. So,
>> and this is their traditional chain.
>> Okay. Maybe we can go there a little bit
and see what's in what's in there.
>> And then
>> you can take picture here.
>> Picture. Yeah. Yeah. That's butterfly.
>> Like I see like angel wings. And then
you can stay in the middle.
>> Yeah.
>> And take a you know a picture of
>> Oh, I see I see restaurant here too.
>> I see restaurant here. So
>> this will be another hotel.
>> Yep. And there's a nice small uh gift
shop
>> and you want to go inside now.
>> Yeah.
>> Let's just check without
>> I think you have to take out of our
>> You have to remove your slippers.
>> Slippers.
>> Yeah, you can go. I don't know.
>> That's how they do it here.
>> But there's like a small gift shop here.
>> And
>> so just a little bit here.
>> Oh, I think this is it, you know.
>> That's it.
>> Yeah, I think.
>> Oh, okay. Thank you.
>> That That's it. This is the shop, right?
>> Oh, yeah. Like souvenirs.
>> All right. All right.
>> Have to find like some clothes.
>> Some clothes. Yeah. They have
>> I thought there's more.
>> Yeah, it's a small gift shop.
>> Yeah. Yeah.
>> Thank you.
>> Oh, then this is the restaurant here.
>> Is this your restaurant?
>> Yeah.
>> Oh, so you have the restaurant and the
shop?
>> Yeah. Yeah.
>> Oh,
>> where's the restaurant?
>> I think.
>> Oh, so you go upstairs?
>> Yeah.
>> Okay. Let's look at the menu first.
Uh
the menu.
>> Yep. So you see like you know noodles
600
burger mushroom. So they have prices in
both fried fresh finger.
>> Their price is uh US. Uh
>> yes. But look at the local prices. See?
>> Oh these are not prices.
>> This is the price.
>> Oh you know I was thinking this is the
price. Santa. How come it's so
expensive?
>> That is the like item number.
>> Oh, okay. You can uh just go a little
bit or you can eat here. What do you
want?
>> It's up to you. What do you want?
>> Let's eat now. Maybe
>> you want to just eat now here.
>> Yes. Maybe let's eat now.
>> You have mango juice, right?
>> Mango.
>> Okay.
>> Okay. So, let's go inside.
>> Okay. So, we're just going to eat here
for now. And what is the name of the
restaurant? Olu Oli.
>> Olathi.
>> Olathi. Okay.
>> Restaurant.
>> We can take sandal.
>> You can put it
>> here. Where? Where?
>> Where? No. No. Where's handle?
>> Oh, you wear?
>> Yeah, because see it's not that.
>> Okay, that's
>> And uh you take a credit card, right?
>> Yeah.
>> Okay. All right. Thank you. All right.
So, guys, okay, so we're going to go
upstairs to the Olumati uh restaurant.
And you can see some fish here. And um
let's see what do we have here.
There's like a lot of kind of Oh,
all right. So hand wash.
I see nice nice turtles. Hello.
>> Oh yeah, you can see. And you have a
nice view. So this is the street we are
walking. And that's where actually
you're living. So it's like, you know,
very convenient. If you want to just eat
here, you can just come and eat. And
we're going to sit here and someone is
going to bring us food shortly.
Hey guys. So I'm going to show you some
prices here. So this is the first
restaurant we're eating at Ukulas Olmati
restaurant. Now the shocking thing is uh
the prices are extremely cheaper
comparing Digura. But you know Digura is
got famous because of Instagram and Tik
Tok and a lot of people are going there
for whale shark and the sandbank. So I
think that bump up the prices. Uh
distance wise they're both very similar
distance. uh from uh the capital. So I
don't think transportation cost is a big
big factor. So take a look at here the
coffee or tea is like you know $3 $2 and
dessert here you're looking at like $2
$3 which is 50% higher uh in Dura and
then here we have some like you know
soup and salad and light meal and burger
and I'm going to show you these like you
know chicken fried rice or other where
you can see that like $4 to $67 but it
50% more in uh Digura and we are taking
beef noodles for now. Look at the price.
Only $4. It was like I think at least
has to be
>> when I ordered there I remember $11. But
it's pai, you know, pai that's kind of
the same, right?
>> But still I think it's going to be like
you know probably double and I'm taking
also uh beef no chicken curry rice right
we got chicken curry rice and you can
see it's only $5. So still this is a lot
more diga. So for sure food prices are a
lot cheaper in Okulas and this is going
to be our first meal and so far we are
liking it.
>> Mhm.
>> And we just ate here at this restaurant
Olu Oluati
>> Olu Mathi. And we had a very good
experience eating here. And what we
noticed that you know food prices are
very cheap here comparing Bura because
we are covering uh not one two or many
islands in the Maldives to bring you
great content. So right now we're going
to just like you know have a quick tour
or walk on this island and we have no
idea where's the end or where's the
beginning but you know the our hotel
employee told us that there's no way we
can get lost on this island because this
is a small uh place and you can see the
ocean right there. So if you just you
know go that way you're going to go into
the ocean and also if you go this way
you're going to hit the ocean as well.
So, for now, we're just heading this way
and show you around a little bit. Now,
is this guy, you know, the guy told us
this is the main street or this another
street? I I don't
>> I think this is the one.
>> This is the main street. Okay.
>> So, it's possible
>> the we saw the bank of Maldivs at the
dock close.
>> Oh, yeah. Yeah.
>> And I think that is a good um uh video
to show y them that you know there is a
if they are coming here in Okulus there
is a
>> there's a machine. Yeah. Yeah, [snorts]
a small bank.
>> Yep.
>> I think the big bank is in Malay.
>> Malay. Yeah, if you're looking for big
bank, that's in Mallay. And I see
there's something here. Ukulus.
Uh,
>> they have hospital.
>> Yeah, but this one,
>> we have to see the hospital here.
>> I don't know what is this. Let me check
what it shows there. Ukulus.
>> Convention center.
>> Oh, so this is like a convention center.
Okay, this looks like nice.
But can you imagine how quiet it is
here?
>> Yes. Really?
>> I feel like if I if I talk I I'm so
loud.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It was really really
quiet.
>> Mhm.
>> Very peaceful like Vigora. It's very
quiet there. But you know the uh in Hulu
Humallay is kind of
>> uh not loud there.
>> Loud. Yeah.
>> So many things going on. Yeah. Right.
>> But here is so quiet also.
>> Wait. I think this is the street going
in the middle of the island. Mhm.
>> So on the left, right, like you know.
>> Oh, I see this. I saw this one. You
know, we went we went that way.
>> We went this way.
>> Yeah.
>> Okay. So that kind of makes sense. So we
better take this street for now.
>> So if you go left or right, I think
you're going to hit the beach. If you go
north south, you're going to hit the
beach.
>> That's the one I told you that if you
that angel wings Yeah.
>> If you go to the center, you can have a
picture on for Instagram, whatever.
>> Okay.
>> And this is Oro Palm.
>> This is another hotel. hotel.
>> Yeah, it's kind of similar like ours.
>> Ours is only on one floor.
>> Oh, okay. This one is different.
>> Only floor.
>> So, another one. The sunshine. So, this
looks like another
>> This one looks like ours, right?
>> This one kind of looks like Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> So, every
it look like everything here is hotel
and the
>> Yeah, that's true.
So all these are look like in a small
hotels and they are still making some of
them
and yellow mango Thai Thai cuisine. So
that's a Thai cuisine right here.
>> Maybe that Yeah, it's there.
>> Yeah.
And they have a sticky mango rice.
>> Oh, they do.
>> Yeah. Here. Brownie. Mango. Sticky rice.
Brownie.
>> I know you like that.
>> Yeah.
>> Maybe you can tell one time here. We can
come and just eat the sticky mango rice.
>> But uh they didn't put any menu outside.
>> Otherwise, you could have shown the
prices.
>> Yeah. But what can we tell you guys is
that here in Opulas, the prices are very
cheap.
>> Yep.
>> Uh cheaper than in Digora.
>> Digora. Yeah.
>> I think it's good to show that, you
know, we go to the Mald. Uh Bank of Mes.
Do you want that?
>> Yeah, that's fine.
>> Okay.
>> I think that's behind us. No,
>> it's it's like over there. you know, but
we just wherever we go, we will see it,
you know.
>> Yeah. So, we just like, you know, keep
walking and
>> if we come back, then we can show.
>> So, the guy said our uh hotel a guy he
said that this is uh much smaller than
the vigora.
>> Yeah,
>> I think theora is uh bigger because of
the sandbank
>> because it's like you know long strip.
Yeah. Long because of the sandbag is
additional, right?
>> Yeah. But Dora has lesser people than
here.
>> Population is higher here than Dura.
>> Oh, really?
>> Yeah.
Okay. So, looks like this is a grocery
store or convenience store and you can
find stuff like, you know, ice cream.
>> That's like, you know, Yeah. local
store. And you can find Oh, I can even
see some uh fruits and vegetables there.
Look, I can see some fruits and fruits
and vegetables. And
>> yeah, here
>> oranges and apples, even bananas.
>> Looks like big store.
>> Yeah. Yeah. It doesn't look like a
small.
>> Yeah.
>> What is on the right?
>> So now we know where to buy some
groceries.
>> Oh, yeah. So there's another
>> It is local plus.
>> Local plus. Okay. There's another
restaurant right here.
>> And this is the what they call buggy.
>> Buggy. Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> Hey, I think I can see now the
>> what
>> the Is it Is it there? Oh, no. It's not
a house.
>> No, no, no.
>> This is mango tree. I think
>> it is.
>> Yes, this is mango. Mango leaves. here.
>> Okay. Okay.
>> But no mango.
>> No mango yet.
>> Mango tree. I mean mango fruit.
>> Okay.
>> This is like abandon. Look.
>> Oh yeah. I think no one lives here
anymore.
>> Yes.
>> Yeah. Used to be something before.
>> Yeah. So probably they're renovating or
>> building a new one
>> activities
>> activities and tours
they have shark here.
>> We already see the not really see not
really saw because uh one guy did the
video for us the whale shark but I
cannot believe how beautiful it is you
know the that whale shark.
>> Yeah.
But do you notice something here
different than Digura?
>> No.
>> Okay. So it it has sidewalks.
>> Oh, okay.
>> The road is uh sand. Okay. But the they
have sidewalks.
>> Yeah, that's true. They have sidewalk.
Yeah, it looked more organized.
Everything is more organized here.
Oh, now I can see the
>> wa we found a mango.
>> We found a mango here.
>> Fruit.
>> So, this is mango tree. And uh I think
it's trapped.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah. Okay. Let's put it back.
>> Yeah.
>> Another cafe. Yeah.
>> Your favorite cafe. Let's cafe.
>> So, you can go come here for coffee
later on. You said 5:00.
>> Yeah. A little later. We just ate. We
haven't done here.
>> Yeah.
>> It looks like dark.
>> Maybe it's not open.
>> Yeah, it's it's open. But to people yet?
>> Okay.
>> Yeah, it's open. We will come back.
Thank you.
>> Okay. That is a dress shop, I think.
>> Oh, yeah.
>> Yeah. Dress rental. Oh,
I think if you want uh you go if you
want to go to the sandbank.
>> Yeah. Yeah.
>> You want uh to
>> you have to rent dresses, nice dresses,
then you can rent here.
>> And they they'll do photo shoot, drone
shot, everything.
>> This is much nicer.
>> Yeah, for sure.
>> Yeah. But we did a drone shot also, but
I was just wearing bikinis.
>> Yeah.
>> Not Oh, another store.
>> Another Oh, another grocery. Yeah, this
looks
>> Let's go inside.
>> This looks like a little bigger. Yeah.
Much bigger.
>> Yeah. Okay.
>> You want to go inside?
>> Yeah, we can go have a quick look.
>> Okay.
>> So, you need to remove your sandals.
>> Yeah. Every time you go into the store,
you have to remove your sneakers.
>> So,
hello.
>> Hello.
>> We want to tour your store. That's fine.
>> We want to just have a browse. Okay.
Thank you. I have banana here.
>> Oh, you want banana?
>> Yeah, sure. Just uh let's show
everything first. Then we can
>> because we don't eat banana.
>> What are this? Look at this. What is
this?
>> Oh, that
>> fried fish. That is fried tuna.
>> So, they have tiny mangoes.
>> Wait a minute. Look at this. So, I think
look at I don't know how much. How much
is the mango?
>> Tiny.
>> Tiny. How much is this?
>> He's checking.
>> Oh, you're checking.
I'm just curious how much
>> and because we will buy this for
>> the banana. Yeah, that's a good thing to
buy.
>> Okay. So, if we are out of uh bar soap,
then we can just get from here.
>> Yeah. Yeah. You can get bar soap and
like you know lotion, shampoo,
everything is here.
>> How much?
>> How much? 70
>> 70
>> Yes. 70
>> 70 rup
>> 70 rup kilo
>> oh 70 kilo
>> 1 kilo for 70
>> 70 rupia oh okay that that I don't
sometime have prices here oh yeah you do
>> oh they have noodles also noodles
>> they have noodles okay I see they have
like you know lotion shampoo those
>> look I found the Nivea tiny I found
Nivea Tiny
Oh, this is like mine.
>> Yeah. Yeah, that's like yours. But I
think this is better to get from I
>> I got mine from Dubai.
>> Dubai. Yeah, we can get it from Abu
Dhabi. I think it's a little bit more
here. And what what else here?
>> So, they have everything but like
>> you know
>> what is this?
>> Oh, you said you want to buy the
deodorant.
>> Deodorant bioqua 45.
>> Check the deodorant if they have. Uh,
you don't need to have Duran here.
Yeah, I think you have to go to a dur
section. And these are the detergents
and stuff.
>> Yeah.
>> Oh, sorry.
>> Okay. They have might have deodorant
here.
>> Okay.
>> You want to get now or?
>> No, no, no. We're just checking. No, I
don't see what you're looking for.
>> Okay.
>> Yeah. Okay.
We will come back for banana.
>> Banana.
>> Okay.
>> Thank you.
>> All right. Thank you.
>> So, one thing is not everything has have
prices there.
>> Yeah.
>> And there's another kind of
>> another store. Wait, I have to buy some
uh souvenir.
>> Souvenir. Okay. Then we can come back.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Because
>> Oh, now closed. Look. Sorry. Closed.
>> Oh, no. When it's open. Oh, please come
down.
>> Later. Yeah, I think.
>> And another small convenience store.
>> We have to find the what is the name?
Barber shop because we want haircut.
>> All right. We got to find the barber
shop here. Okay. So, tomorrow
>> tomorrow we can find the barber shop.
>> Yeah.
>> And here. Oh, I think this is a sim card
shop.
>> Sim card.
>> Yeah, I think you can buy SIM card here.
>> Oh, yes. But I don't need SIM card now.
>> Yeah. Yeah.
>> Yeah. Before I was thinking of buying
eim.
>> Yeah. What?
>> And uh later on decided to just buy the
physical scene here. But you know what?
I check them out.
>> Yeah, that's true.
>> Because everywhere there is Wi-Fi.
>> Yeah, that's true.
>> If you're in the restaurant, guys, okay,
then you can just uh ask for Wi-Fi and
password, you know, then you have your
internet, right?
>> You don't really for me.
>> Yeah.
>> Oh, that's real banana. I cannot believe
this. It's a big one.
>> I cannot believe this.
>> Mhm.
>> Who's this?
>> That's another nice restaurant here.
>> Chef New.
>> Chef New restaurants.
>> And then we have the menu right here.
So, they don't put the price in it.
>> Yeah.
Okay. If you if you see the barber shop,
we can ask now. How much is the price?
>> Yeah.
>> And maybe you want to do it now. Don't
wait here tomorrow.
>> Do it now.
>> Yes. If you find one, then uh you can
just go for it now. Another store.
>> It's a hardware store.
>> Oh, hardware. Because of the chains.
>> But how come everything is closed?
>> How can they open?
>> Oh, Sunday. Today. That's why they're
>> Oh, today Sunday, right?
>> Yeah. It's their um like holiday, right?
>> No, no, no. Oh, I don't think Sunday is
the holiday. It's Friday.
>> Like Friday.
>> Friday is the holiday. Yeah, Friday,
Saturday, maybe.
>> But maybe.
>> But not Sunday.
>> No, I don't think so.
>> Or maybe it's just easy to
>> Maybe they will open again. Yeah.
>> Okay. I think we are going to hit the
ocean.
>> I think either way you walk, you're
going to hit the ocean.
>> I think we Yeah. So, we will show soon,
guys. We will show you.
>> Oh, this has to be the hair shop.
>> Looks like it. Yeah.
>> But it is all men and women and kids.
>> For so
>> it's close.
>> Oh, okay. Okay. But you know that where
>> I just see phone one.
>> Yeah.
>> So the name is what? Uh salon.
>> Salon.
>> Best beauty salon.
>> Yeah. There's no really name.
>> No, I see that there. Best beauty. Oh,
Bashi. Bashi. Not not best. Bashi beauty
salon.
>> Oh, okay.
>> So, we can go there for your haircut.
>> Yeah. No, I think there's another one.
The guy said
>> if you come across another one, you can
check there, too.
Yeah.
>> Wow. I like I like to walk here.
>> There's another another grocery.
>> Oh, wow.
>> Yeah.
>> I cannot believe so many grocery store
here.
>> Yeah. So, they have lots of grocery
stores
>> in Digra. There is no
>> Yeah. Not that many.
>> Oh, there is. There is. I remember.
>> There is, but not that many. No. Yeah.
>> It looks like there is a big playground.
>> Yeah.
>> What is that? Like 10. Uh
>> yeah, like for soccer maybe.
>> Track and field. No, track and field.
>> Okay.
Oh, what is that tree? I know this. That
is a fruit. Oh.
>> Oh, that is makopa in Tagalog in
Philippines. Makopa.
>> Okay.
>> It will it's it's a like
>> it's like water.
>> It's like watery food. Okay. But it's a
red red thing. Red color.
>> I think I ate this before.
>> You want to see?
>> No. I can see from here. But I think I
think
>> it's like a bell.
>> Yeah. Yeah. I think I ate that before.
>> When it Yeah.
Yeah, there we have lots of
>> lots of constructions.
>> Center.
>> Oh, okay. But I don't think it works.
>> Why look like a broken?
>> Yeah, it looks like broken.
>> Yeah.
>> Okay. Maybe.
>> Okay.
See the roof is falling apart.
>> Yeah.
>> What happened here?
>> I think they're uh redoing it. I have a
feeling.
>> Renovation.
>> Yeah.
>> So later we can uh do laundry also.
>> Yeah.
>> I remember because I saw
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah. I hope it's easy to drive here. So
this side has lots of construction.
>> Okay.
So this is the
>> you can go closer than the
>> Yeah.
>> That's not here.
>> It's not here.
>> No, I don't think so. Oh,
>> I think it's all the way there.
>> On the other side.
>> All the way on the right.
>> Oh, yeah. You're right. Maybe it's on
the other side over there.
>> Yeah.
>> Okay.
>> Maybe we can go.
>> Yeah.
>> Okay. Let's just go inside and check how
it is, you know.
>> Oh, that's a gym. Body work.
>> That is a gym.
>> Yeah. I saw someone going in there and
doing gym before on TV on on YouTube.
>> No, you're not doing gym.
>> Okay.
>> Yeah.
>> There is there are equipments.
>> Yeah. You have to pay. You can pay one
time and do workout.
>> But I think
>> I think we need a you know
>> Yeah,
>> we need also some workout.
>> It may be closed now. So
>> yeah, everything is closed. I know.
>> Yeah.
>> Garage something.
>> Yeah.
>> Oh, it's a like uh for the motorcycle to
fix
>> your motorcycle.
>> Yeah.
>> And this is their traditional chair. I
always say national chair, daddy. Oh my
gosh, I'm so embarrassed.
>> Yeah, it's good. Yeah,
>> it's not their traditional chair. How
many times did they say that their
national chair? My goodness. So they
>> think kind of same thing.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah. See, I can tell it's much smaller.
>> Mhm.
>> Because we walked a little bit. Looks
like it's finished.
>> Yeah.
>> In one island, I think you can stay at
least 3 to 5 days and you're done
exploring the island.
>> Yeah, that's true.
>> Right. You don't have to stay 1 month
otherwise you will feel bored.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
>> So I think it's better to if you're
coming to the Maldives
you you stay in one island for 3 to 5
days and move to another islands. Right.
>> Yeah.
>> So you can see also the difference and
experience what is the what is the
different islands. Right.
>> Local life. What is this thing?
I think it's could be an office.
Yeah.
>> Be careful there, daddy. I don't want
you to to fall on the water. I don't
know how to swim.
>> Oh, yeah.
>> Okay.
>> No. No be this point.
>> I think I don't know what is this
supposed to be. Do you want?
>> No. No. I don't think you're supposed to
go there.
>> All right. But there's nothing to
>> Yeah.
>> It just said no vehicles beyond this
point.
>> Yep.
>> Oh, secret
house. vegetarian.
>> And what is this?
>> Look at this. They have the solar
>> solar. Oh, look at the solar panel.
>> Is this a moss? No, it's not a moss,
right?
>> Uh I think maybe they're a store.
>> Look at that.
>> They install solar
>> solar panel installation.
>> Yeah, they install solar panel.
>> This is a must maybe because look at
that. Oh, but that's another building.
That's not this building.
>> Yeah.
>> All right.
>> So, here we came here.
>> Yeah. I I remember now.
>> Yeah.
>> I came here.
>> We get off here with that.
>> And I think you can see stingray here.
>> Yeah. What do you remember the hotel guy
name?
>> Uh oh man. I don't remember now.
>> Yeah.
>> But it's okay. Let's just say for now
hotel. Could it be Hassan?
>> No.
>> No. No. I think it's Hassan.
>> Yeah. So, here is the B of
>> Yeah. And let's see if we can see some
fish or stingway.
>> Just Just be careful. Okay. I don't want
to.
>> No, it's still far away.
>> But he said I remember he said it's more
there. Okay.
>> We have to go there.
>> Okay.
>> How much for uh
>> $6? money here.
>> I think $6.
>> $6.
>> Yeah,
>> just to withdraw money.
>> To withdraw money.
