Ukraine has officially unveiled its new FP-9 ballistic missile, a domestically engineered system designed to strike high-value assets deep within Russian territory. Developed by the Ukrainian defense technology company Fire Point as a domestic alternative to the American MGM-140 ATACMS, the FP-9 features a substantially larger warhead at half the production cost of its counterparts. The primary differentiator of the FP-9 is its impressive 855 km operational range, which places it within the short-range ballistic missile category but significantly extends Ukraine's strike capabilities compared to existing systems. Measured from border sectors in Sumy or Chernihiv oblasts, the distance to Moscow is approximately 410 to 415 km, meaning the Russian capital falls well within the missile's operational envelope even when launched from secure rear areas. This capability contrasts with standard ATACMS variants which have a reach of 300 km and Ukraine's Sapsan tactical missile system which reaches up to 500 km, offering a much more difficult target for enemy air defense systems due to its high terminal velocity.
While the manufacturer suggests that Russian energy infrastructure could serve as primary targets, there are differing timelines regarding full deployment; Fire Point chief designer Dennis Stylman indicated Ukraine would soon be capable of striking Moscow, whereas former Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov offered a more cautious projection for deployment before the end of 2026. Currently, Ukraine's long-range deep strike campaign relies primarily on cost-effective drones and subsonic cruise missiles like the FP-5 Flamingo, but these systems fly considerably slower than ballistic missiles, making them more vulnerable to detection and kinetic interception by Russian air defenses.
The successful mass application of the FP-9 will require significant international cooperation, as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that some elements depend on other countries. The missile system is a key part of Europe's first common anti-ballistic system called Freya, where Fire Point will provide the missiles and launchers while allies work on components and surveillance radars. Ultimately, deploying a ballistic missile like the FP-9 represents a strategic shift toward hitting Russian launch sites with greater efficiency than trying to knock down incoming Russian missiles, marking a significant escalation in Ukraine's defensive and offensive posture.

its operational combat debut planned for
autumn 2026.

exhibition in Rzeszów, Poland in April
2026 by its manufacturer, Ukrainian
defense technology company Fire Point.

considerably slower than ballistic
missiles, making them more vulnerable to
detection and kinetic air defense
interception. Firepoint's timeline was
backed up by Ukrainian President
Volodymyr Zelenskyy last week, although
he said deploying the FP-7 will require
significant international cooperation.
As for mass application, I cannot say
because there are things that do not
depend on Ukraine. There are some
elements from other countries. The FP-7
is a key part of Europe's first common
anti-ballistic system called Freya.
Firepoint will provide the missiles and
launchers, while Ukraine's allies will
work on components and surveillance and
tracking radars. Firepoint already has
its FP-5 Flamingo cruise missiles
carrying a 1-metric-ton warhead up to
3,000 km, but it has only been used
sporadically. A ballistic missile like
the FP-9 would be more difficult for
Russia to intercept and could hit
Russian launch sites, which is far more
efficient than trying to knock down
incoming Russian missiles.
