Tyler Perry Why Did I Get Married Again? Review | THIS WAS UNEXPECTED! | Netflix

All right, guys. It's Tyler Perry time. And as you can tell, I'm very very excited to talk about this film. When it comes to this franchise, it's actually one of my favorites in his filmography. So, does it hold up? Is it any good? Let's talk about it. My name is Brandon Keith Avery. And this is just my opinion. >> [music] >> All right, guys. Now, we have Why Did I Get Married Again? This is the third film in this franchise. It is coming in at PG-13. And as you can see, the runtime is not here. But if you look on Netflix, it's about 1 hour and 50 51 minutes when it does come with the credits. It is being described as comedy and drama. Now, this is being written and directed by Mr. Tyler Perry. Of course, this is what the gentleman looks like right here. We don't need to go down his filmography, but I'mma do it anyway. Diary of a Mad Black Woman, Gone Girl, A Madea Christmas, Madea's Family Reunion, The Family That Prays, Beauty and the Black, I mean, you can see it right here. Tyler Perry's Finding Joy, Tyler Perry's I Can Do Bad All By Myself, College Road Trip, Straw, I mean, my goodness gracious, this guy has a ton of films. And as far as I'm concerned, I'm 50/50 with Tyler Perry. Maybe about 60/40. 55. No, I'd say 60/40. I do like majority of his films. Some of them are stinker, but not this franchise. I did love the first two, Why Did I Get Married? and Why Did I Get Married, Too? So, as you can see, I was really looking forward to this film. Now, my expectations were I don't want to say through the roof, but they were high. They wasn't medium, they wasn't low, but they were high because this is one of the best films in his filmography. I really did enjoy the first film, and I really did enjoy Why Did I Get Married, Too? which came out, I believe, in 2010, 16 years ago. And when the information, when the trailer first dropped for this, I was saying, "Okay, why are we getting another sequel? Is this warranted? Is there a good story to tell?" And I would say, "Yes, just judging by the trailers and by the film itself." So, I'm excited to talk about it. Not only will you get a non-spoiler review right here, but you will also get a spoilers review of this movie that I'm going to be doing with Kimberly Currin. So, make sure you subscribe and check out all of my Tyler Perry films. I have a whole bunch of them and still more to come as well. So, before I get into all the nitty-gritty, before I talk about all my likes and dislikes, let me tell you exactly where Why Did I Get Married Again? is all about. Jasmine loves Wesley, and their wedding is near. But her stern father and others disapprove, prompting couples around them to question their own perfect marriages. Now, I will admit, with the addition of all the married couples' children included in this film, it did take me a little second to pair everybody up like, "Okay, whose kids is who? Who is in the new relationship? Who dated who in the past? Who's the cousins, the brothers, the sisters, the siblings?" All that good stuff. You shouldn't necessarily have to do that, and I think at the end of this film, it was explained thoroughly, but it's something that I wanted to check out before I actually hit play, just so I can have the best understanding and/or comprehension of all the events that were going on. Now, I will go ahead and address the elephant in the room. As soon as it was announced that this film was coming out, debuting on Netflix, and Tyler Perry and creators and producers released the cast, and when the trailer first came out, everybody wanted to know, "Wait a minute, where is Janet? Where is Janet Jackson? We know that Gavin died at the end of the last film, but Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson came up, swept her off her feet, and they possibly went dating. What's going on with that relationship?" Unfortunately, they are not present in the film. Most of you do know that, but it was addressed within the first two or three minutes of this film, and it was a pretty decent explanation on why she wasn't present in the film. If you go to IMDb, it states that she had some scheduling conflicts. I don't know if that's true or not, but that's just the narrative that we're going to run with. But, I will say that she was missed. And to fill in her shoes, to fill in some screen time, we did get Taraji P. Henson's a new character, not a new casting, but a new character, to fill up the space. She has a son by the name of Wesley, who is marrying Jasmine, who is the daughter of Marcus and Angela. And I do like the inclusion of Taraji P. Henson's character. She just wasn't another supporting character in this film. The movie spent a good amount of time on her character, her backstory, and how she can add to this franchise without showering over everyone else and stealing all the attention. One thing I can say about this movie is, I really do love how Tyler Perry took advantage of the run time. Everyone in this movie did get a respected amount of screen time. Whether it was focused on an individual character, an individual couple, the children involved as supporting characters, the women as a group together, or the men, and then also everyone involved together. It was a great balance. I love how Tyler Perry did separate that. I wasn't walking away from this film like, "Oh, I wish they would have spent a little bit more time here or a little bit time there." Everyone got an even amount of screen time, and so that was pleasant across the duration of this movie. And the reason why we're pressing play on Netflix right now is we want to see all of the characters from the past. Yes, the children do have prominent roles that they played in this movie, but it doesn't center on them. It still centers on the adults that we fell in love with a little over a decade ago. And their children, again, they do get a good amount of screen time, but they come second tier to the main characters that, like I said, we know and love. And kind of like another film that I did review earlier this year called You, Me, and Tuscany, it was a great movie. I think you should all go see it if you get a chance. This movie does inspire me to go travel, especially Italy, just like that film. I don't know if they were on locations. I want to say yes, but if not, they did a really good job of portraying that. In the first movie, Why Did I Get Married, they were in Colorado in the snowy mountains. The second film, they were in the Bahamas. In this third film, they are in Italy, and my goodness gracious, it is beautiful. The countryside, the lake views, the food, the culture, the accents, the scenery, it was just Oh my gosh, I I want to go right now. I really do. I just want to swipe my credit card and not care about the bill, and just go and be like, "I'll find the money to pay for it later." That really wouldn't be the best idea. That would be pretty irresponsible, but I would be lying to you if I didn't say that that was crossing my mind when I was watching this movie. So, at the very least, this is a very, very beautiful movie to look at. Now, just like the past films, this is being described as a comedy and a drama, and it is funny. It's not like laugh out loud funny. You're not going to be rolling on the floor, but I did get a chuckle here and there from a number of moments during this film. And majority of it comes from Mike. He is hilarious with all of his crazy crazy shenanigans. He definitely deserves to be punched in the face. I did enjoy him for the comic relief. I mean, the guy is just cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs. And so, majority of the comedy did come from him. There was also a line of dialogue just between the other characters and just little mishaps here and there that I did chuckle at as well. But, it was funny. I did I did laugh. I did get a chuckle here and there, and I think that will be the same for you across the board because it's some of the activities that they do take place. I'll just say when they was working out at the gym, that was a highlight for me and did bring me to smiles. Also, in the trailer, we have Mike with this wig. And a lot of people, when I was reacting to both trailers, were in my comment section like, "Tyler, what are you doing? How in the world can you have Mike suffering from cancer, going through all of his treatment in the last film, but now he has a full head of hair? That does not make any sense." First of all, I love the way that Tyler did address this in this film. And let me call him Tyler Perry, not just Tyler like I know him personally. I love the way that he addressed that. And if you've seen majority of Tyler Perry films, even though I do enjoy most of them, he does a horrible job sometimes when it comes to the hair and makeup. I mean, it's just atrocious. Go back and look at the movie A Fall from Grace. There's a thousand things that you can laugh at, just not in the whole movie, but the hair and makeup belong with these horrible horrible wigs. And yes, it is a wig that Mike is wearing in this film, but that's only coming from the trailers. I love the way that Tyler Perry addressed this. It's like he is in He's like he's breaking the fourth wall. He is in on the joke and knows that everybody talks about him, and I thought that he addressed it in the perfect way to give the middle finger to everybody like, "Y'all yeah, y'all talking about my wigs all the time, saying that I'm a billionaire and I don't know how to do my hair and makeup and wardrobe. Well, take a look at this right here and how I dress it. I thought it was perfect. It was the cherry on top, icing on top, however you want to explain it. That was one of the best aspects of the movie ever how they did address Mike's hair in a funny way and a serious way. And so, I just got to give them two thumbs up right there for Tyler Perry being a great sport and joining in on the fun of all of his fans, non-fans as well, making fun of all of his hair and makeup designs in his past films. So, great job, Tyler Perry. You did You did an excellent job there. That That was funny. So, you're going to get some laughs in this movie. I also left out something. This is 16 years later and everybody is back except for Janet Jackson, but I will say that everyone did age well. They look good for being 16 years later. Also, especially coming from Lamman Rucker, who plays Troy. You know, he had the goatee. He had some gray hair as well. It was a good look on you, brother. It was a good look on you, brother. Also, Michael Jai White as well. Now, my favorite character in this movie, surprisingly, is Angela, played by Tasha Smith. Now, I will admit she does get on my damn nerves, and she did step over her boundaries a little bit in this movie, but at the same time, some of it was warranted. And but even though she was annoying, I still like her, and I do respect her character. She is not with the BS. She is not with the playing games. She is not afraid of confrontations and will get in your face and yell at you, sometimes rightfully so, because she feels like there should be a certain order instead of chaos. And like I said, I can do nothing but respect that. She's still an annoying character to me, but I I respect her. She's unapologetic. She's standing 10 toes down on what she believes in, and she's just not going to have any crap. She's not, especially when it has to do with her daughter getting married. You know, so she was powering up on a few people there, and you know, there was a number of times I was like, "Hey, I I understand where you're coming from. I may not have approached it the exact same way you did, but you're not wrong for feeling the way you feel. And so, I just got to give it to Angela as well. She was my favorite character in this movie, somebody that I did respect, and I said that for the third time. Now, of course, we all know that this has to deal with marriage, and marriage is not easy. It is very difficult, but if you can find that partner that you love and loves you, it is possible to have a nice, long, fulfilling, flourishing, thriving life. And that is the goal for all of the couples in this movie, and the themes that surround them I love. It is with trust, communication, transparency, infidelity, and generational curses. And all of those themes, all of those elements, all of those aspects is spread throughout all of the characters. I love that. Tyler, you did a great job there in the writing department. I'm not saying that it's wise to just put all your business out there. Yes, things are personal. You can take some things to your grave, but some things do need to come out to light so everything can air out, and it will be for the better. And this film did a great job of showing that. And you get a sense of loneliness from Rosalyn, Taraji P. Henson's character. You also get the importance of being spontaneous from Terry and Diana's relationship, generational curses from Angela and Marcus, past hurt and trauma from Sheila and Troy, double standards from a number of people, and also cheating and infidelity. Now, I don't want to list the characters there that were dealing with that possibly because that would be a spoiler. You have to tune in for the spoiler review if you want to get all of those tidbits, but all of these are included. It had a great balance, and I thought that those were very realistic to married couples and just couples in general in life. And a lot of times people feel like sometimes things are better left unsaid. In this film, it illustrates that that's not the truth. You know, you got to communicate sometimes even when it's embarrassing, sometimes you do need to let those skeletons out of the closet. Now, some of them they just need to stay there. It also goes into what is the best way to raise your child, whether it's a boy or a girl. How much is too much? How much is too little? Parents discussing amongst themselves, did we do a good job with raising our son or daughter? Should we have done this? Should we have done that? I know my parents a couple of times have told me "Yeah, me and your mama didn't really do a good job when it comes to this and this when we was raising you. We wish we would have did this, this, and this." So, you know, and I can laugh about it now. And I'm not I'm not saying at the time that my feelings were hurt. You know, majority of what they said was true. But, I like the fact that they were able to look in the rear mirror and reflect on that and let me know and communicate so I possibly don't make the same mistakes or could do a better job when I have kids raising their grandchildren. That is prominent in this movie and I love that as well. You You got to talk. You got to be transparent. You can't pretend like you're perfect and that you don't make mistakes. All of this is addressed. It is very, very mature and I got to give Tyler Perry that credit as well. You know, it also deals with abuse, physical abuse, emotional abuse as well. But, the main thing I love about it is they really just show that every relationship is different. No parent is perfect. No marriage is perfect. I mean, there are going to be trials and tribulations. And you just have to make sure that you pick a partner that you want to fight for. That you want to go to battle for. That you want to go to war with. That will fight as hard as you can. And if you can do that, it will be difficult, but I I I think it would be a success. I think it would be you know, turn into a great relationship and y'all can, you know, pass away together in peace and harmony and love with little to no issues. Cuz I mean, you're going to have them. Like I said, no marriage is perfect. Now, those are the things that I really didn't like about the movie. Now, let me just transition to a couple of things that really did not work for me. Given all the relationships, I'm still not 100% on board with why Mike is there in the first place. He dated Sheila years ago, and I can understand that you're still friends with the males, but you're you shouldn't be friends with the women in this movie anymore. And given that the main point of the movie is for these two younger children to get married. I mean, yeah, you can be there in support. And I I mean it just I'm slightly convinced I wish Tyler would have given a better reason why Mike is there because he's not with Sheila anymore. And him being there, it makes things awkward, it causes conflict, it causes confusion. Another thing that really did not work out for me is some of the actions from some of the characters was just completely unrealistic to me. There's no way in the real world where I can see a human being doing something like this, especially when you're around close proximity with so many other people. I don't want to spoil it for you now. You have to check out the spoiler review that's coming soon, but I would just say to myself, "Okay, this is there's no way in hell that this this would go down. It just wouldn't. It's impossible, you know?" And I don't even think it would be possible in a fairy tale. It doesn't overshadow the film and make it, you know, ruin the whole picture, but I'm just over here scratching my head like, "No, that that that just would not happen." If if it did, there would be broken bones, blood, bruises everywhere. It just wouldn't happen like this. So, I just I I'll just say that Troy is the most patient person on the planet. I I just God, I don't know understand where he gets his patience from. So, you know, I need to ask him that cuz I need some of his patience. So, that's all I'll say. And also, at the very beginning, I want to say the first 20 minutes, it did take me a while to get kind of warmed up. It was um, exposition to kind of explain where everyone is in the world and what their situation is. It was a bit on the nose and a little bit forced. The exposition, the dialogue, the transitions here and there could have been a much smoother. But once we get to about 20-25 minutes, I was on board, I was locked in, I was like, yes, let's go. I am enjoying myself. And the last thing, yes, I wish that Janet was there. She She was missed. I wish she was there. Taraji did a great job, but you know, I just want the best continuity as possible. Should there be a fourth film in this franchise? I I would say I'm I'm not opposed to it. I'm not opposed to it. The only way I would want to see that and make it work is if everybody that was in this film is present in the fourth film, including Janet Jackson. I don't know if the scheduling conflict is real or not, but that's what we're running with. If she's not going to be there, if everybody can't come back, don't do it. But that's that's the only way that I would want to see a fourth film in this franchise. But guys, that's all I have with you. I really did enjoy the film. I'm going to watch it one more time in preparation for the spoilers review. I don't have a ranking for you right now as far as which Why Did I Get Married film is my best in the Tyler Perry franchise, but it is good. It is entertaining. I did enjoy myself. I will go ahead and give my rating for this at the very end. But for now guys, thank you so much for tuning in. That is just my opinion.
