Trip To Georgia In The Coleman Pop Up Laura S Walker State Park

Hey everyone, Shaper 1000 here taking a little trip. Um, beautiful day out. It's not overly hot. It's in the high 80s, but yeah, be a good weekend to go camping. That's what we're going to do. Heading to Georgia. Going to take a little camping trip. Stick around, guys. We're going to have some fun this weekend and part of next week. So, uh, we got about two hours to go. Stopped to give Bruno a break. We're going to hit the road. Stick around. And here we are. All right, guys. So, man, I'm going have to replace this battery. Monkeyy's eating. >> Yep. She cheated. >> Why? >> She went and went to KFC. I told her I built a fire over there in the fireplace. Cook her something to eat. Nah, that was our plan. We just do something quick and easy tonight. So, here's our setup. I'd put these way down because the wind cuz we got It's windy, huh? Because we are on the lake. There's Monkeyy's view when she comes out in the morning, drink her coffee, right, Monk? >> Yep. >> Did you remember coffee? >> Yep. >> All right, that'll be her view. >> Mhm. >> She's using my new chair. But it's 94 out here. Got it down to 89 in the camper so far, so that's good. They pulled in about 20 minutes after us. We're at the old school lantern. for tonight. Got the bug light charging solar, so that's good. Uh yeah, there's not much uh shade here. I mean, I looked at all the all the spots, but I knew she wanted to be on the water, and I thought I tried to get that one, I couldn't get that one. That's that's eight. And so, I got six. This is six. But that's eight. Number eight there. I thought would have made a better view because if we get a big camper in there, you know, the view will be limited. But, you know, it is what it is and it's very very fine with me. At least she's on the water and we are getting a breeze. So, very nice. Like the way they got that fire pit. Pretty cool. Some time lapsing that sunset. Beautiful, huh? Nice lake. Hear the locust. Nice. Met these people over here. They're from Jacksonville, Florida. It's a 42-footer. It's a 2022. Just got it back. I had to fix some dents and dings in it that he did himself. He said it's a learning curve, but that's okay cuz you know, I mean, ours has a dent in it, too. I ain't going to fix it cuz it's character. Ours has a dent right there. We didn't put it in it. But so probably just going to leave it like that. But yeah, not a lot going on tonight, guys, cuz you know, this is just moving in day. But I got some things planned tomorrow. Um they're having all kinds of things going on tomorrow. Huh. >> Yeah, they do. But we have to go to Walmart. We have to get our fishing license because you know our license are from Florida. So they should make it like driver's license all and get all get in all states. But so we got to pay and get um temporary licenses so or I'd be fishing tonight. But yeah, it's it's nice. It did. Alexa said it was going to storm today, but we hit some rain coming up here, but just like a couple sprinkles here and there in like two or three spots, but it hasn't rained here since we've been here. Uh got down 69 in the camper last night. And I had to turn it down. The air conditioner turned on low. Probably wouldn't even need it. I had I had to get in my sleeping bag, which is unusual. This is dripping here. Probably air conditioner, so it's making things wet. The only condensation inside the camper was uh I see on this door here, but it's on the outside was just the bottom of the air conditioner itself, which I wiped off. That was it. So, but man, this thing pulled awesome yesterday. No problems, no issues. Uh when we stopped when I did my intra, check the bearings. cuz I can put my hand right on them wheels and hubs that were warm but not hot. So, it did well. All right, guys. I think she's going to want some coffee. So, I'm going to think I'm going to bring out a little stove here for her and uh so she can she can heat up some water and have some coffee and then we'll go to town. See, this is weird. Look where this is at. It's right there. And you got all this room. Same way with that one over there. It's more towards the front. You would think it'd be like towards the back or the middle. I don't know why they did that. Uh, I mean that would reach over to use this, but I'm going to be able to use one inside and outside. So, all right. Let me uh let me get her a stove set up here. And in our typical camping fashion. Yeah, it's raining. Of course, I knew it was coming in, but All right. Okay, guys. This is a big reason why I wanted to come into this town of Way Cross, Georgia. Now, this is the CC Mccrae City Auditorium. This is kind of an important building, especially for a small town like this. Okay. Now, February 22nd, 1956, a musical artist performed here that wasn't very well known. All right. So, I'm going to read you from here what I've got here. Okay. There were two shows performed here. one at 700 p.m. and one at 900 p.m. And the ticket prices to them shows was a dollar in advance or $1.25 at the door. Okay. Now, the person that played here ended up being a superstar, right? One by the name of Elvis Presley. That's right. February 22nd, 1956. Elvis Presley played here. And I'll read you what I've got here. Okay. Now, other performances that were here was uh Elvis was part of a package tour package that included several other country and roots axe, the loving brothers, Justin Tub, Mother Mabel, and the Carter sisters, including June Carter, which ended up being June Carter Cash. Okay. and the Alabama Sand Dusters. And here's some context for you. Just days before his stop in Wayross, Elvis had made a major national television appearance on the Dorsy Brothers stage show performing Heartbreak Hotel and Blue Suede Shoes. Just a few weeks after the way cross concert, Heartbreak Hotel became his first national number one hit song propelling him into superstardom. Now check this out. I know a lot of you guys don't know some of these names, but but I do, but but the old older generation like me do. a young 9-year-old local resident named Ingram Cecil Connor the III, who would grow up to become the legendary musician Graham Parsons, attended this exact Way Cross concert and managed to get Elvis's autograph. And then it it goes on to talk about the building just a little bit. The building still stands today. As you can see, it's on the National Register of Historic Places as one of the few surviving Georgia 1950s venue where Elvis performed. So, I had to bring you here and show you that. Um, I'm sure most everybody's probably heard of Elvis Presley, but let's walk up here. Monkeyy's going to do some filming. She's in the car with Bruno. But let's walk up here and let's take a look at this. Uh, now I think uh the name was changed has changed since then, but there's a plaque here. Let me see if I can get it so you guys can pause and read it if you want. Okay. And here is a very old plaque here. I don't know if we can see in there. Oops. Let me take you off the stand. Maybe salvis straight ahead there played performed in there two shows. Now I don't know if this would have been ticket booths here or if the ticket booths were as soon as you came in. Usually these were coat check rooms. They would check your coat for you. This could be where you would have bought your tickets. There's another plaque here. I'll let you pause and read that. But it doesn't say anything about Elvis. So, it is an amazing building. But I wanted This is one of the main reasons why I came in. Look at that place. It's freaking absolutely huge. I was hoping there'd be somebody in there. Maybe we could get in. If you YouTube it. There is another gentleman on YouTube that has a video up. He got to go inside. He didn't show the outside, but beautiful building. All right, guys. Okay guys, so I like to check out some old buildings when we get into a town like this. And this is the second theater we have seen called the Lyric. Look at this old building. Looks like the roof may be caving in on it. Course it says no trespassing. This is the old ticket booth right there. Can't see nothing in there. Monkey tried the door. Wow. What a shame. >> Yeah. Let's just take a walk down here. Kind of back to my YouTube roots filming abandoned places. I'm sure it's not like technically abandoned. Someone owns it. Wow. There's a lot of buildings in this town that, you know, nothing. Not sure about the fate of this one. Hopefully, it can be saved. I mean, it would be it would take a lot of uh a lot of doing. Uh I mean, really, all you got walls. I'm sure the inside's really bad with that roof being like that. I should have brought my drone. We could have put the drone up and took a look at the roof how bad it is. There it is. Monkeyy's filming, too. She had to let Bruno. Look at the sconces up there. You know what they say about theaters? They're usually haunted. And I bet it's in bad shape inside. Like I say, that roof's coming down, but wow. Just uh it's amazing to see this stuff. Look like the other one they're still using it for something, but it's an old one, too. So, I have no way of knowing about this place. I mean, you know, someone owns it and just let it go to crap. I mean, someone needs to save these places. Like if you're going to own a place, at least do something with it or sell it to someone that will before it gets into this condition, you know. Wow. Let me see if I can find out anything on this. Okay, guys. I'll read to you what I found out here. The historic Lyric Theater in downtown Wayross, Georgia was built around 1923. just sat here for 10 minutes, not one car. And is con is it's a contributing property in the downtown White Cross historic district on the National Register of Historic Places. Over the years, it has served as a local cinema and hosted several world premieres for movies filmed in the nearby Oki Finoi Swamp, which we will get to later. Um, now it was built in 1923 with some records noting an earlier theater entity on site as early as 1914. So, this could be a second building, you know. >> Yeah. >> So, and the design, distinct arch windows and masonary details attached to the historic Yarboro building, which is that one right there. which originally housed the theaters upstairs offices. So that building there, the theat's offices were up there. >> Yeah. >> Up there in those windows. Um operated by the Georgia Theater Company during the mid 20th century, peak of downtown Way Cross. Uh ownership and condition. Um it says the building is privately owned while long vacant and showing signs of age. It remains standing as we can see. Uh maintenance city and private crews have performed exterior maintenance such as safely removing aging rooftop mechanical equipment dispelling occasional rumors of imminent demolition. the structures exterior facade and connected yard building intact. So, it doesn't look like they're planning on tearing it down, but the owner needs to do something with it or sell it to somebody that will. So, this is the Ritz. This is the other theater I was telling you about. Uh, I found some information on this, which is uh pretty interesting. The Ritz Theater originally opened as the Grand Theater in 1913. It was initially a vaudeville and live performance space but screening silent but was screening silent movies by 1914. That's pretty cool. In 1917 it was renamed the Oreium Theater. By 1935, excuse me. By 1935, it was acquired by a Paramont Pictures, a Paramont Pictures subsidiary and a significant re re by 1935. It was acquired by a Paramont Pictures subsidiary and a significant renovation in design was completed. Its name was changed to the Ritz. The fine art deco work is credited to prominent Jacksonville architect Roy A. Benjamin, one of the architects of the iconic architects of the iconic Florida theater. The Ritz showed its last regular run movies in 1977 with some features still playing until 1984. It became the home of the Way Cross area community theater in 1986 and still serves that purpose today. So, it is still being used. I should talk to that guy. See if we can get inside there. I doubt it. See, he's just a cleaner. But let's uh see what that says. Murders in the air. H E I R. Cool. So, yeah, I think they're cleaning it. What a beautiful theater, huh? It's a classic period commercial lodging structure that serve travelers passing through the bustling South Georgia Rail Junction, which is right there. As you can see, there happens to be a train going past. And this is the rail junction. Cool. Want to see another one? Okay, guys. Here is another building. This is the historic Wayross City Hall. It was former YMCA. This building was built in 1908 on Pendleton Street. This brick landmark originally functioned as a local YMCA before being acquired by the city in 1916. Its basement formerly housed the local National Guard unit that mobilized for active duty in World War II. See these small towns, man, there's always something. You know, you just look at it. It's an old city hall building, but it's wild. I mean, there's so much historic significance in these towns that, you know, people just don't like right there. That's That's pretty cool. Let's see. Let's see if I can zoom in on that. I thought this was neat. Look at this water bill drop off box or drop box. Must be around to the side. I mean, you know, you can still drop off a check for your water bill or cash in an envelope. Amazing, huh? All right, I won't spend too much time on this camera. I didn't bring an extra battery. I did, however, bring another camera, but not my mic. But if we got to use it, we'll use it. Okay, guys. So, here's another one kind of significant. This is called the Bun Building. B U N. Just happens to be right across from the Lyric Theater. All right, let me read you something about this. Look at all the pigeons. Uh, it was erected 1912. This prominent fives fivetory structure. 1 2 3 4 5. Yeah. Uh, was the region's first fireproof reinforced concrete building. Historically, it housed a theater, a pharmacy, and a dime store. Now, it operates as an affordable family rental property with vintage architectural appeal appeal. Uh features income restrictions to ensure rent caps align with area affordability standards. Welcomes housing choice vouchers, though applicants must otherwise qualify based on household size and income limits. Managed professionally with a focus on quiet accessibil accessible uh community environments. Resident controlled access and an elevator for building safety and ease of movement. On-site fitness center and a furnished community room clubhouse. Business center for residents. Resident computer and workstation needs. on-site laundry facilities and 24-hour emergency maintenance support. So, I just thought that was neat that it's, you know, the region's first fireproof uh uh building. So, that's pretty cool. Okay, this is a shame. A beautiful old house. Looks like it was destroyed by fire. However, it is for sale. Monkeys falling, too. No, that place is for sale. Wow, what a beautiful Well, at one time it was beautiful. Look at that. What a shame. Yeah, we're going to go to a place to eat. Sounds pretty cool. Oh, it was a an apartment. See the mailboxes there? What a shame. There's a cool place over there used to be called the Serenity House. They got chicken curry, collarded greens, neckbones. They've got oxtails. They've got smothered pork chops. They've got chitterlings. They have turkey wings. And they have ribs. Awesome little place here. So monkey went in to order cuz Bruno's allowed but he's allowed outside. So she went in to order and uh so we're going to sit over here for a minute. Hang on. Traffic. So I am going to get the smothered pork chops and I am going to get color greens and uh cabbage. So cool. when my when our food get when our food gets here, we'll uh I'll turn you back on maybe. So, just just talked to the owner. She come out. Nice lady. Uh she come out and was talking to us, asked if we had any kids and grandkids and you know, was talking about that and she said, "Uh, nice black lady." And uh she said um she said how old you think I am. She said you can say ain't no shame in my game. So I said uh I was guessing around 62. She said I wish I was. She said she's 82 and she's still running this restaurant. And she has 38 grandkids and she has some of them in there working right now. So that is really cool. 82. And my goodness, she doesn't look a day over 62. And that's no joke. I know a lot of people 62 is old, but compared to 82, you know, I mean, Monkeykey's mom's 78 and she can't even hardly walk. So, and this woman's still running a restaurant and employing her grandkids. Amazing. There's still some amazing people out here. So, Monkey went in to check on our food. That's her there. These these people here are really a true pillar of the community and they probably don't get recognized. Mm-m. >> It's always big corporate, you know, Shell Station and blah blah blah and Marathon, whatever the corporation may be here, you know, probably get all the recognition here. You know, she went out and bought all that stuff to cuz school's starting up and to give out to the unfortunate. >> Yeah. >> To give out uh free school supplies. Wow. What a pillar of community these people are. They're amazing. >> She was amazing. >> Yeah, great food, man. And them kids sitting there all well behaved, eating their lunch and stuff. >> Yep. >> That was her great great grandkids. >> Not screaming and yelling or cussing or anything. >> They're sitting there enjoying their food and playing. So, I quit a little bit ago. Monkeyy's still fishing. Uh, she just caught something. She was babe. Opened up door. I got a turtle. 8.91 lb. Pretty big turtle. So yeah, my camera was up here, so I had to hurry up and get down and help her. She's just trying to yank it in. I'm like, you can't do that. Get the net. So, we got the net and I got the hook out. I walked it just snapped the hook. But, uh, yeah, 8.91 lb. So, that's not her biggest That's not her biggest one, but it's pretty big. Pretty good size. It's soft shell leather back. So yeah, I'm just in I was just out there just about 10 minutes and man, what's the It's 89 outside, 74 inside. I don't have my glasses on. Anyway, it's 89 outside and 74 in here. And I got that on low, so it's doing well. Yeah, it got really hot and humid out there. So, there is a slight breeze going. So, all right, guys. I'll be back with you. Oh, we have a breakdown. These guys are having engine problems. They can't get it started. And when it does start, it stalls out. May have to get towed in from there. It's not that far. Right over there is the boat ramp. Right there. I got a guy with a hydrooil out here. Monkey said, "Look." And I was kind of busy messing around with that. But anyway, so I missed him. But he was going past here eight, nine times until I decide to get the camera out. Now I don't see him. But anyway, if you if they come back through, I'll try to get them on film for you. Okay, they got someone to pull them in. So that's good. That sucks. Just trying to enjoy your day. I'll bet you the pump didn't kick on. I should try to salvage it. It's definitely sinking. Let's uh go around here the other side. Yep. It's It's over the stern. Man, not sure what's going on with that. Look like one of the hatch covers came off back there. What's it It's registered for two more years. Well, it's 2026, so it registered until the 28th, 2028. Yeah, it wasn't sinking yesterday. I don't know how deep that is there, but man, that's stupid. People have boats like this and they can't take care of them or don't take care of them, whatever. Oh, well, I don't know if I can find out anything about it. We're going over here and check up check the beach out. Okay, guys. So, there Okay guys, so there's the beach part. You can go in there and go swimming. This is the guy on the hydrooil. Let me see if I can zoom in for you here. He said, "Which boat? Why?" I said, "Yeah." He goes, "Well, she's out of town deep sea fishing." I said, "Well, she's going to have to deep sea get her boat cuz it's sinking." They really should lift that motor up. pull the plug and let it sit there and drain for a little bit cuz there's still some in it. But okay guys, so they got the boat back over. They got the plug out still draining which it will for a little bit. They they need to when they unhook that off the truck, raise the jack to that trailer up all the way and then whatever water's up front will drain out and it should be okay. But that's a testament that that motor's been or that battery's been underwater all day long. As soon as we got the water off of it, it's it was fine. It started that engine right up. Okay, guys. Bruno jumped up on the there where I was editing and broke my memory card. So now that camera's not working. So I'm going to have to get my new camera out and use it. Hopefully nothing happens to it. Went in, turn lights on. No lights. No 12vt. They're 12vt lights. I listened real close. I could hear the converter running. What the hell? And I looked around. I didn't see Bruno anymore. I like Bruno, where you at? Bruno, where you at? He's looking at me right now. I'm right here. And I heard a movement. I was like, well, he's around here somewhere. So, I knew, well, something popped a breaker for the 12vt. The only thing that's on that breaker right now was the lights. 12vt lights. And what the hell's going on? So I pull the cushions off cuz you know the tables down. I pull the cushions off the table so I can get cuz you got to go under there. That's where the breakers are. That's where the breaker box is. And I heard a what the hell. He got under there and got the legs down on the table and got himself stuck and he must have been moving around and hit the breaker. Turn the breaker off. I opened that up and he's sitting there looking at me real sad. I said, "Did you get stuck?" He went I said, "Well, come on. Get out of there." He got out, hopped up in that bunk. I turned around, looked at him. He's looking at me, head sideways like, "What' you do?" So, where did he go? He's He's under the camper. All right, guys. Shar the Myth Man Legend gone for now.
