Tram Bashing and Exploring in Gdańsk.

Hello. Thank you for joining me. I'm at Gadansk Airport Station in Poland. There's the airport over there. And this is the railway station. There'd normally be two tracks, but they to be doing some engineering work. So, everything's working single line through this platform. I just bought my ticket to catch a train into the city center. This is like a behind thescenes video of um the tram bashing I do. So, when I travel around, I like to make videos where I'll usually film out the back window of a whole tram route, but I thought it'd be quite good to do a behind the scenes to see all the other bits that go into that. So, on this trip, I'm also going to visit a couple of other Polish cities. So, they'll have their own separate tram bashing in whichever city that is. So, I've just now got to wait for my train to arrive. It's going to come from that direction, which will take me to Gansk City Center. There's a statue of a cat waiting for a train. Well, I'm on the diesel now. This isn't going to the main station in Gdansk. It's going to get to one of the others. I'll put the name on screen now. And when I get there, I'll catch another train to the main station. Drop my stuff off where I'm staying. And then it'll be time for some traction. It's snow on the ground outside. >> Get my first view of the trams. Although I did see some from the airplane, but that's route 10. Just comes in here. Ends at a stop terminus. So, probably won't be doing a full video on that one, but I will at some point ride it. I might just catch a tram. I can't see any in there. I'm kind of on the wrong side of the train. I'm hemmed in by my suitcase and books and stuff. So, uh, but we'll hopefully come and ride this line later on. I'm here in Gdans. The next time I see the TR, we should go over them. So, I'll try and get a view out the window of that as we cross over the tram network. Heat. Here I am outside the main station. That's the main railway station building there. And of course, here's the tram. There's plenty of trams here. My plan is tram on route three will arrive from that way. I'm going to take it to the other end that way and then film the whole route. So, that'll be a separate video. I just got to wait for the tram now to arrive on route three. That's the tram I've just been traveling on, number 1035. This is one of the pesa swing trams. So, this is a single-ended tram, so I can film out the back. That one was very busy and I wasn't planning to film this route. Anyway, it is a commuter time. I'm in a sort of residential area and transport interchange. I believe they're also building that might be what those cranes are for in the background. A new esbar line. It's quite an interesting place. So, what I got to work out is um which tram I'm going to take. And um like I said, I'm going to film the whole room. Nice seeing the Polish flags on the front of the PESA tram, which of course is a Polish product. So, I'm just going to hang around here. Maybe have a little wander around. I say it's mainly residential, but I like to have a look at see where I'm actually going rather than just stay on the trams the whole time. And then I'm going to ride hopefully the whole of Route 3. As I said, I like to explore a bit. So before traveling on Route 3, I just came for a little walk and I discovered this frozen lake. It terminates. Route three time. It's just up here. And and this here, this could be something to do with this new um espan line they're building. You can see there's ice on the ground. Doesn't feel that cold at all. It's about 9°, but obviously had a lot of snow and uh it's taken a while to melt. So, made quite a pleasant walk around this area here. So, I'm going to continue walking around the lake and I'm going to catch the tram. Give Nice. Yeah. Heat. Hallelujah. Well, here we are back in the city center. You got the old town over there and you got this modern shopping city here. Believe it or not, this is the main railway line under here. They've um built this shopping center on top of the railway line. And down there, there's a tram. I thought it was Route 4, although that one says Route 11. Unfortunately, attempts to film the trams today haven't gone very well, and I've given up. First attempt on Route 3, I got so far the camera then fell over, stood it up, carried on going, and then it turned itself off a bit later on, and I'd missed a couple of stops. I thought, "No, that's not good enough to publish." So, I went back and tried again and um the tram I next went on terminated short of its destination. So, and as you can see, it's now starting to get stuck. So, I've given up filming, but by the time you watch this, I shall hopefully have had um a whole ride on some of the roots. It won't be all of them. It'll be the single ended routes. That's interesting. That's saying route 11 as well. So, watch this one go by. These are the oldest trams on the network. I'll tell you more about different types of trams tomorrow. The other thing I will say is as for pronouncing some of these names, I'm probably just not going to try because being dyslexic and you know uh yeah, I'm just not going to try. So, most of the names will have to be captions on screens anyway. We shall do some more traing tomorrow. >> [music] >> I'm in the forest. Still quite a lot of snow which hasn't melted. And I still haven't found what I'm looking for. It seems to be the main path through the forest. It's got street lights. Um it seems like it's a bit of a thorough affair. Ah, yes. I think I can see through the trees what I'm looking for. I need to turn off at this junction. Don't you be able to see that. I've got to go up a load of steps. And uh probably isn't obvious on camera what's up there. I'll show you when we get there. And here we are at the top of the steps. Reach the summit, this little hill in the middle of the forest. But I can go even higher because we got a lookout tower. And it's one of my favorite things about coming to Central Europe is quite often in forests or in various places they have these lookout towers. So, let's go up and see the view. Here we are up at the top. Quite spacious up here and get views over the suburbs of Gdansk. So, where we were yesterday where that lake was, that's just down there. So, I'm probably not going to go and look at that again today cuz I walked around that yesterday. The port and everything is out that way and the old town center is just down the hill down there. Yesterday, I sort of traveled through part of that area on my way from the airport and um I believe this new Espan line that's being built will serve some of this area here. So, maybe one day we'll come back and ride that. Now I need to find my way down. But if you don't like heights, I don't suggest going up here cuz you can see straight through the floor. And um I'm going to find my way back down through the forest and we'll hopefully have more success of filming the whole of Route 3. Like I say, that will be in a separate video. I just like it up here though, sort of on top of the trees. It's only me. It's just really nice and pleasant. So I'm going to spend a little bit longer up here just admiring the views and then I'm going to go down and we'll try and ride Route Three again. I finally managed to film Route Three. This is a tram I've been on, number 1035, one of the PESA swing trams. These, apart from one or two others, seems to be the only ones that have the one-ended one, which makes my form of filming possible. So route three, it terminates here on a large loop. So it's come that way and then it will continue on down there. So if you're thinking, why am I not filming that? Well, what happens? Route five goes out that way, continues on down there, does another loop further up, and then comes along here. So this section of route three, which is shared with route five, would be filmed route five. So only route three uses this platform here. So it's like a triangular little stop here. So it seems interesting little area. So, I'm just going to have a little wander around and then I should catch a tram on route five from the platform over there, make my way, and then at the start of the loop, I'll film the whole of Route Five, come back through here and go to the end of Route Five. So, [snorts] after a few um you know, not getting not having the best of luck. And even with this one, then the wrong sort of tram came and double-ended one came. So, I had to wait. I finally filmed Route Three. So, I'm happy now. It's a little way from the tram stop before riding route five. I realized I was very close to the sea. So I thought better come and have a quick look. Be rude not to. Never been to the sea in Poland. I mean most European countries I tend to visit tend to be the central ones which don't even have sea. So and when I've been to Poland before I've been to the southern part of Poland nowhere near the sea. So it's quite nice to just come and have a look. There's something nice about a beach in winter. I don't know what it is. It's just um just nice. It's nice to look very different in the summer. I expect it's very busy. So, here we are. This is the Polish sea and the Gulf of Gdansk. Now I've ridden route five. That was probably one of the most interesting routes I've done. It went all around parts of the docks by the port and now it's terminated here at this this um circle. There's another tram just coming in on route 12. Not sure which way he's going, but that there's a single change. Now, on this one, the driver's got to get out and change the points. You can just see over there, another pesa tram over there. So, the line does carry on up towards the sea. Now, there's the driver. She's changing the points. Looks like she's coming in over here. So, it's quite an interesting section. So, what I'm going to do, I'm going to catch a tram towards the city and um then when I get there, I'm going to pre have another look and then um I've got it noted down. I'm going to film another one of the tram routes. Yeah, it seems if you're not on the tram that terminates here, you do actually get to ride the whole of the route, which I hadn't realized. And like I say, they then go off. Interesting section up there between two buildings, not really on the streets. So, more like a light railway. I'm going to go and decide which tram I should get. And I probably should get lunch cuz it's getting a bit late. I found this rather nice park to have a walk around in between riding the trams. There's like a long thinned pond there with lots of ducks coming off the nonfrozen section. It's all frozen back there. And then it continues up here. Look at this little garden. I really like a nice water garden. This is another lake up there. So, we'll go and have a look at that. Have to do a bit of research cuz admittedly I know nothing about this park other than it does seem rather nice. I always have a look in park especially like if you get to the end of the tram route and you see there's a park. Having sat on the tram sign is up for an hour. the ends of my fingers can be quite numb from holding the camera in one position. So, it's nice just to go for a bit of a walk. Also, I've been sat down sometimes in very awkward positions cuz I'm kind of twisted round to hold the camera. Not sure what's going on here, but it's going um but it still seems right to walk around here. So, um obviously doing something anyway. Here's another lake here. And uh he wasn't hooting at me. Look at that. Still ice on it. So it shows it's winter also. It's a lot colder in this park than it was when I was out on the streets. It's uh got a bit of a microclimate. So here we are in this rather nice park. But I'm going to now go for a walk, get back on the trams, and we might maybe even end up at the sea again. I've arrived now at this northern tram hub of the city. Various routes start here. So, plan is next to do route six. This is how you can see on that one the windows too dirty. So, I I wasn't going to film anyway cuz I want to have a walk around the area. Like I say, the sea's not far away. So, they got all these various trams waiting to form various routes. And it looks like you get on here and we'll get to ride the whole loop. The other thing I should mention is not far up the coast is the town of Gadinia. But between Gadinia and here is a town called Soprron. I'm not sure if I'm stopp I'm probably not pronouncing that right, but it's on screen now. And the trolley bus route in Gadinia does actually go down to there. So, we're quite close to where the trolley buses are. Now, if things hadn't gone wrong with yesterday's filming, I'd be a bit more ahead of schedule and I probably could have gone there and done the tram around the loop. could have gone there to have a look, but um maybe another day. You might be able to do it later on while I'm here, but I don't think so. So, look, now that one's gone. This one moves forward. So, these Oh, that's 111. I always like it when you get a tram or four ones. When you get a tram where all the digits are the same number. So, I'll probably come back here to do, like I say, route six once I have my walk. And you'll be able to see what I'm saying. The tram will go around the loop. It should appear. Yeah, there it is. So, that's what we'll be doing next. So, that's a tram on route eight. So, like I said, my next one I want to do is Route Six. So, hopefully my next job is to film Route Six. But, let's go and have another look at the sea while we're here. How's this? There's some snow on the beach. It's sort of been dug up and it'll effectively form like a bank. Well, you know, dug it up because everywhere I go, there's piles of dug up snow which is taking forever to melt because although it's really sunny today, it's cold. It's colder than it was yesterday. So, up there is Gadina and then you've got the trees here and once you go through the trees, you get to the residential area and it looks like in the summer there'll be lots going on here. I mean, I always think it's really strange being on the beach in winter cuz you know, you associate beaches with summer. I did still see just then I saw one bloke in his swimming trunks. There's no way I'm going. They're not even paddling. So, some people are still going swimming despite the the fact there's snow on the beach. I just think it's quite nice to come here and and just just enjoy the sound of the waves and see the ships out there. So, I'm going to do that for a little bit and then I'm going to walk back and hopefully ride the whole of tram route six. Oh, another dirty window. So, can't film route six on this one. So, I shall get off and wait for the next tram on Route 6 to arrive. It's evening now and I'm not be filming any more traum routes today. I've had a more successful day than yesterday. I'm just up at this area. This is the large loop which routes five, Route 7, which I rode route seven but didn't film it cuz it was getting dark. And then route 10. Route 10 is the smaller loop. Now I just got on a route 10 tram and it went that way into depos. The driver had to let me out there. So I'm not quite sure how it worked at Route 10 cuz the one before the driver that time made sure everyone go off. They seem to terminate that stop over there before going round over there. And then I said earlier they take the smaller loop. So it's getting really cold now. I don't know how much longer I'm going to wait to get that smaller loop in. I might give it one more go. Tempted to have a walk up there though and um see if I can see anything in the depo. There's quite a few depots on the system one of them there. Uh will I get a route ride route 10? We'll find out soon. I thought it'd be worth having a look up here at the depot. There's an old console tram. I think that's what they're called. Um remember seeing those in Katavitza when I went there a few years ago. I haven't seen any here. There's a pesa tram just coming out. The camera's probably not picking it out, but there's clearly some trams that are part of a museum fleet in the depo, which is great to see. There's a another tram about to form a route five service. In fact, that's the one I was on when I although that was my first attempt at doing the loop. By then, I was cold and just wanted to do it. Then the second attempt it was route 10, but they both seem to terminate here. Interestingly, then going to the left and there's another tram looking like it might be about to come out. Now, if that is a route 10 tram, sorry, I'm talking of the noise of tram going around the corner. That's a route 10 tram, which it is. That could be my ticket to do the loop. So, I'm going to go ahead and try and get on that one. I made it and I'm now doing the loop. This is the short little loop. You're not going to see much cuz it's dark, but um I'm going to look out the window and see this. This is the I think this is two built trams. They've had a middle section put in. So the middle section is is younger than the rest of the tram. That's to allow wheelchairs and push chairs to have low floor boarding, but it's not a complete low floor tram like the pess. Anyway, I'm happy. I've ridden Route 10 and I'm and I'm out the cold. It's nice and warm in here. So I'm going to ride this now back to city center and then see what I find tomorrow. It's day three of my tram bashing in Gdansk video and uh I'm not really tra bashing in Gdansk today. Well, it's already nearly half 4 in the afternoon. What I've been doing all day, I've been to Albang and I've done some tram bashing there. That's subject of another video, same as this, behind the scenes, and there'll be a video of all the roots I filmed. I've got back now, and like I say, it's 4, too early to um, you know, call it a day, but at the same time, it's a bit late in the day to go to the end of route and film another route here. So, I've still got more days to do that. So, what I'm going to do, I'm going to catch the local railway to the next town um, on screen now cuz I'm still not quite sure how you say it. And then I I'm going to attempt to do one of the trolley bus routes up to Gadinia. So that's what I'm going to do for to for the rest of today. Heat. I've just had a good ride on this classic electric unit and I've arrived at Sopot. I'm not quite sure how you pronounce the second part that the name, but it's not the main station, but it's one of the the first station in Sopot. The last one was still in Gid. So, the train continues on north. So, I'm going to go out here and try and find the trolley bus sign. And I was going to do it the other way, but it wasn't going to work to do it that way because this route finishes um certain time. That's the main line there beside me. The old signal box just there. And that's the name of the station I'm currently at. Trolley bus terminates over there somewhere. So, I'm going to go and find it. I found the end of the trolley bus routes and I expect this is the bus I'm going to catch, but I have to catch it on the other side of the road. It's always always like the end of trolley bus routes the the way the the wires go around. There's just something about them. I do prefer tramps, but there's something almost more novel about trolley bus cuz you don't expect, you know, there's not that many systems around. There's only three in Poland. So, looks like number 3040 is my ride up to Ginia. I need to get on the other side of the road for that. soft. My knees are soft. There we are. I'm on the trolley bus. I like the motifs on the seats. Got pictures of trolley buses, which I think is cool. So, I'm I'm not going to show too much. It's starting to get dark, but um certainly not going to film a trolley bus route like I would a tram route, but I'm happy to be on one. It seems they stopped running fairly early on this route, so I have to get this one this time. But at least it's still daylight. There's plenty of other electric buses around which I have no interest in at all. Um, trolley buses, you know, they are to me they're better than electric buses. Electric buses require a much heavier chassis and everything to accommodate the batteries. Most modern trolley buses have some batteries to go >> a distance away from the wire should it be necessary, but they're not they don't have they're not like electric buses. So, to me, a trolley bus is a better system and more novel. So, I'm going to enjoy this now. Take me to the railway station in Gina. So perfect for black washed. There we are. The end of the trolley bus route. That was quite an enjoyable trip. As you can see, it's got dark now and it will soon be fully dark. So it was a nice nice ride at dusk through the on an into urban route. Goes around the circle now ready to form. >> I'm going to go to the station, get back on those local trains and head back to Gdans. And then um tomorrow I'm going to another city. So there might not be any tram bashing in Gdans tomorrow. Then day after that I shall resume exploring the tram network of Gdansk. It's day five of my trip to Gdansk. Yesterday I didn't actually do any tram bashing or filming here. I went on the train to Gonsk and um did the tram system there. So that's a separate video. Couple of churches here. Where's churches everywhere in Gdansk? That one over there is the one which I went to the Shopan concert on the first evening. And this one here, this one is the basilica. It might almost sound a bit inappropriate to say this outside two churches, but my plan for today is not to do much in Gdansk, but to go to hell. Yes, you did hear me right. I'm going to go to hell if you want to know what on earth that's about. That will be a separate video. So, you have to watch that. Before I go to hell, maybe I should go to church. So, um I've just looked. It cost six zotty to go in this one here, the basilica. And um so that's not much more than a pound. Certainly less than two. I probably won't talk inside, but I'll try and get some footage inside. before taking the going to hell. I had about an hour, so I thought I'd come and have a walk around the harbor. And it's really nice here. The tramstone actually served this area, so that's why I haven't been here yet. But some very attractive buildings. The harbor is still partially frozen over. You can see it's a big ship down there. And just down there on the other side of the bridge, there's an old um old sailing gallion, I think. come out. I don't know too much about ships, but I'm just going to pan around, let you see the view of the harbor, and now I'm going to make my way over to the railway station to catch the train to hell. Jimmy, it's the final day of my trip in sunny Gdans. I'm flying back to England tonight. So, I'm going to do hopefully two more tram routes today. I just dropped off the luggage at the stations. I had to be out of where I was staying by 10:00. The place I booked online didn't wait existed, but there was no one there. So, I asked a couple of Polish ladies and they didn't seem to know. But then they came back 5 minutes later say, "I don't think someone's coming, but we'll show you another one." Which was very kind of them. And then two other nice Polish ladies um helped me to use the system cuz it wasn't in English. So, it's always nice when locals help you when you're, you know, somewhere in another country and you're a bit confused. So, yeah, thank you very much to those ladies. Right, so I'm going to wait for a tram. My plan is to get to the end of route two now. Uh, that's a stub term and that's a no loop there. So, I won't be filming route two, but then I'm going to walk from there or get a tram to the end of route 12. Plan is to film whole of route 12 today and the whole of Route 8 and then um finish off by doing route 10. I can get a train from the airport to the from there. So, I've just got to wait for my there's a tram on route 12 trails. That's the route I intend to be filming. I'm glad to see that's a one ended tram. So, be doing that hopefully in the next hour or so. I'll be passing through here on a route 12 tram. I can wait for my tram to arrive. Take me to Route Two. Hello. Heat. Here we are at the end of Route 2. So, I've just come down here on this double-ended Hessa tram. It's also the end of Route 4 and 11, but they only run Monday to Friday, and today is a Sunday. The next stop up the hill, Uchco, that's where Route 12 starts. There's a loop there. So, what I'm going to do, I'm probably going to walk up there because I'll only be going back on the next tram. I like to stretch my legs in between the tram journeys and I'll film Route 12. So, although route 12 will also go back past the railway station like this did. It takes a completely different route. So, there is a section up there served by route 2 4 and 11, which um I won't be filming a whole line video of. Like I say, if there's a stub terminus, um then I generally don't Yeah, I just like to film out the back window because it's the easiest way of filming. And uh anyway, I'm going to walk up to Jessica, which I guess I'd say might mean new town, new something or other. Might have a little quick look around here, but I don't think there's a great deal to see. It's just loads and loads of new flats and things. And then over there, nothing. A lot of development perhaps is going to take place. I'll have a look if I see anything interesting. I'll let you know. This is the return loop at Jesu where route 12 starts. So there's the tram waiting there. So I think the staff probably have like a little mess in there. I've just seen lady the driver going into the tram. So she's probably going to be our driver if I make it because the stop is right down there. Um, there's some, as I said, there was a lot of work going on. I understand there's plans to build another dep depot here. And if you look, they've actually put the track in crossing the road already. It's not wired yet, but the track is in. Now, if that tram over there, number 103, if that suddenly comes around the loop, I either start running or I just know I'm going to miss it. Look, that's the new line into a new dep depot. Oh, and I think yeah, this is the tram which I did route two on. I'll let you watch that. Goodbye. So, you can see it's not very far. In fact, that I beat the tram here. Um, I could have waited and come up on the tram, but I actually went around the roads over there. It's funny they showed each roads on the maps, but there is nothing on these roads. They're just all, you know, being developed. We'll have to see. Maybe come back in a few years time, see how much this area changed. Of course, they open new routes. That's the reason for me to come back. So, when trams on route 12 terminate here, they must go into a platform there. Passengers get off and then, like I say, they go and wait there. There's a mesh room there. tonight. So staff can probably use the toilets. Have a quick cup of tea. I'm not sure. Anyway, I think I have got to we'll get to the stop in time. So, what I'm going to do, I'm going to wait for the tram to arrive and then I shall film the whole of Route 12. There we are at Zasper. I think route 12 is the longest route I've done. It took um an hour and 14 minutes. This is the tram I've just been on. Um it seems this track is the middle track. So the tram's just currently sitting there and the driver's gone in to get a well earned cup of tea by the look of it, which is what I could do with. So, I'm going to I've seen a shopping center a few stops back. So, the tram will then go around the loop. My plan is to catch a tram down in the other direction. I might go up a couple of stops. There's a shopping center where I can get out, get a cup of tea, and then hopefully go to the end of Route 8 and film Route 8. So, I'll continue through here and um continuing the tram route back to Gdansk City Center and hopefully beyond. In between riding trams, I thought I'd go for a nice walk in the park. I discovered there's a very large park here um which goes down towards the sea. So I filmed that one very long route, route 12. I don't think I'm going to be doing any more now on this trip. Um I might ride planning to ride route 8, but it's truncated which I didn't know about due to some bridge works. What I hadn't realized was I was thinking it was truncated to where there's a loop. So they'd have been using the one- ended tra. I realized it's actually truncated to before the loop. So um it means I won't be able to film it in my usual way. So, I'll probably ride it for fun. So, I'm sort of making my way through this large wooded park. It seems uh it's quite busy here, so there's a lot of um there's a nice day, nice Sunday. Most of Gdants seems to be here. So, I'm going to enjoy a pleasant walk through the park. You never know what I might find. I find anything exciting. I'll show you. I don't think there's going to be any miniature and narrow gauge railways here. It' be great if there was. Um anyway, so and then I'm going to plan is to ride Route 8. might be very sunny in Gdansk, but just look at the lake. Still completely frozen over. Not I'm going to try walking across it. And I'm glad to see no one else is trying. Actually, you do. I see that people trying to walk on the lakes. But yeah, it just shows it's sunny and I actually feel quite warm. But it's only spring is only just beginning. After a pleasant walk through the park, I have made it to this tram terminal where I was the other day. And uh there's a tram on route two coming in there. I'm going to be probably on the one in front of cuz I'm not crossing his path. So that's the tram I'm not getting. Looks like I'm getting this one number 166. That's going to be my ride in route too. Like I say, I'm not filming the route. But what I think about these ones is uh they're quite good. They have quite a nice um layout. bit more like a train like really feels like yeah they're good for traveling a long distance. Let's see if I can show you. So here we are. Number one 66. Can we get inside folding these doors? Then we go when I get on at the beginning at least I can show you in two. I think I did show you one few days ago. So if you look see there's the low floor bit in the middle for wheelchairs and push chairs. I just like it. I can sit here like it's on a train, you know, nice seat lined up with the window which the pesa trams don't really have so much. So anyway, I'm not going to film much on this. I'm just going to enjoy the journey. Now I'm back by the main railway station again. Unfortunately, I had to abort Route 8. I got as fast here and I realized I was running out of time. So I went and had lunch and also as it wasn't going all the way. Um I was hoping to show you how they're terminating, but yeah, unfortunately that's not going to happen. But another time if I come back here I'll get to do the whole of the route. It's likely I will. There's no other routes as far as I'm aware under construction. I think there will be extensions to the system in the future. There's one more route though I can do and that's route 10 and it happens to finish on the line which goes to the airport. So I'm going to wait for a tram to arrive on route 10 and that'll be my final tram ride of this trip. Here we are. This is the end of Route 10. The tram I've just arrived on has gone just down there. And as you can see, this is a railway station. So, this is the line to the airport. going that way downhill that will take me back into Gdansk. I've got a catcher train I think from the other side and continue on up the hill to the airport. But this is actually quite a scenic line in itself. So if you're ever in Gdansk and you haven't flown, it's almost worth doing this and I believe it does continue on does a loop round to Gdinia. So um maybe this is a line to do more of another time. Maybe if I ever come to Gdansky again, I might just have fun catch train to Gdinia. So anyway, here we are. the end of my tram bashing and exploring of Gdansk. Oh, one other thing. Quite a spectacular grand finale of the tram lines. It came over this bridge. You can just see this fly over. So, it took it over the road.
