Construction continues to reshape Highway 197 in Bemidji, and another major change is coming for drivers. Reporter Ryan Fleming has an update on the project and what motorists can expect. >> At the Highway 197 and Highway 71 intersections, the new pavement, turn lanes, and roundabout are now clearly taking shape, giving drivers their first real look at how this rebuilt stretch will function once traffic shifts over. >> On this project, um basically I've removed uh both, I guess, signal systems. 71 and 197 is going to get a new signal system that's not quite ready to be put in right now. But, uh the signal system at Gillette and Menards entrance is gone, and that's replaced with a roundabout. >> Even with the new construction and roundabout almost completed, crews are still working around steady traffic every day, and keeping that traffic moving has been a big part of the job from the start. >> There's a lot of subcontractors, and luckily they've all been uh very good that we have a heck of a team out here. You know, the team's been great, and and um but, it's a challenge to, you know, that it's a busy corridor, and there's a lot of traffic, but um the bypass has worked well. >> Monday's switch will be one of the most visible signs of progress yet, but it won't mark the end of the work. Crews still have more to finish this fall, and another phase waiting just down the road next year. Drivers have been navigating temporary lanes here for months, but starting Monday, traffic will shift onto the new Highway 197 pavement and through the new roundabout right here. >> We're hopeful that by the end of September, we'll have the project wrapped up for this year, and then obviously next year it'll start back up again from middle school or from 71 uh intersection all to Hannah. >> Even after Monday's traffic shift, the project still has some important pieces left to finish. September will bring the next major changes with crews moving into another stage of construction. >> So, we will be closing 71 north uh to finish that section out, and then we will also be building Gillette Avenue that kind of runs along the airport. >> For now, drivers are being asked to stay alert and take it slow because while the new roadway is taking shape, the project still has a little more ground to cover.
