Video summary

The video provides a nostalgic deep dive into the often-overlooked 1988 Transformers Generation 1 figures known as the Triggerbots and Triggercons, highlighting their unique spring-loaded weapon gimmicks that were central to their design. While the latter years of G1 were dominated by complex gimmick lines like Headmasters and Pretenders, these specific teams featured vehicles with hidden blasters or cannons that could be rapidly deployed via a simple button press. The host reviews six figures in total: Backstreet, Override, and Dogfight from the Triggerbot team, and Wind Sweeper, Crankcase, and Ruckus from the Triggercon team, showcasing their vehicle modes, robot transformations, and the specific mechanics of their weaponry. A significant portion of the review focuses on the mechanical differences between the two teams' deployment systems, noting that most figures utilized fast-acting spring-loaded mechanisms, though a few relied on slower gear-driven rotations. Backstreet is praised for his futuristic race car mode and chrome-finished blasters that flip out from the rear, while Override's motorcycle features stabilizers and holographic decals that catch the light. In contrast, Dogfight is described as an oddball with a jet mode where his weapons rotate slowly over his head, a trait he shares with Crankcase and Ruckus, whose cannons deploy from unusual angles like mortars rather than facing forward directly. Wind Sweeper stands out as the reviewer's favorite figure due to his superior jet mode aesthetics and the speed of his spring-loaded arm-mounted weapons, which resemble pistols when deployed. The host also discusses the comic book appearances of these characters, noting that Marvel Comics gave Backstreet significant attention before he vanished, while Override was famously torn in half by Megatron in G2 comics. Throughout the examination, the video highlights minor imperfections such as stickers not sticking perfectly or decals rubbing off, but ultimately celebrates the figures for their simple transformations and the fun factor of their interactive play features. The video concludes with a discussion on a common debate among collectors regarding whether Wind Sweeper and Dogfight were accidentally switched during production, given that they share different trigger mechanisms despite belonging to opposing teams. The host encourages viewers to share their opinions on this potential mix-up in the comments while thanking sponsors for providing reproduction decals and upgrade parts. Ultimately, the review serves as a tribute to these "triggering" figures, affirming their place as cool, if sometimes forgotten, additions to the Transformers legacy that offer a unique blend of vehicle play and interactive combat gimmicks.

Warning, you're about to get triggered. This video is sponsored by toy hacks.com. Toy Hacks is your one-stop shop for reproduction decals for vintage G1 Transformers and upgrade decals for your modern bots. Toy Hacks, making Transformers look amazing since 1999. In the latter years of Transformers generation 1, it was all about the gimmicks. We had Headmasters, target masters, power masters, and pretenders, just to name a few. Now, one group that seems to have been forgotten was the Triggerbots and Trigger Cons, at least according to the comments I have on some reels that I recently posted regarding these figures. Now, the Trigger Cons did get some love with the legacy line with uh, for example, Wind Sweeper right here, but the Trigger Bots did not have no idea why they just kind of pushed the Trigger Bots aside because those were some pretty cool little figures. So, now without further ado, let's take a look back at 1988's Trigger Cons and Trigger Bots. Warning, this video may be triggering. Don't forget to like. Don't forget to subscribe and welcome to Patriot Prime Reviews. >> They call me Patriot Prime Transformers Reviews with a heartfelt view. >> So, here we have the 1988 Trigger Bots and Trigger Cons and their full glory. For the Trigger Bots, we have Backstreet, Override, and Dogfight. For the trigger cons, we have wind sweeper, crankcase, and ruckus. Now, the gimmick with the trigger bots and trigger cons is that they have springloaded weapons that you could trigger for a quick deployment. So, let's take a look at Backstreet first. Backstreet is the one that Marvel Comics seem to give the most love to. He was in multiple issues and then, of course, just disappeared. He is a futuristic race car of some sort and looks pretty good. I love this car mode. He's got some great looking decals on him. Those are the original decals. Black painted windows, little Ottaba insignia right there. Now, there is sticker wheels on the back. And the reason is this whole back section houses the trigger gimmick. Of course, he does have a wheel right there. So, you know, he can roll along when you're rushing him into battle. Uh, let's show off the trigger mechanism. It's here on the back. Uh, the guns do kind of stick out a little bit, so maybe you can pretend those are really exaggerated exhaust, but he's got a little button right there. You press that and those guns quickly deploy. And that is really cool. We got an armed race car. I love that. Beautiful chrome on those blasters. And yeah, that is pretty much it for the vehicle mode. Let's lock the weapons back in place and get him transformed. One tends to stick from time to time or not stick rather. Really, you're going to be like that. Okay, there we go. So, to transform him, really simple. You're going to pull out the front and flip that out forming a big old mono foot. Flip back this whole rear section and flip forward his little arms. And there we've got Backstreet in his robot mode. Robot mode is pretty simple. Bring him in for a closer look. Uh not much of a face sculpt. Marvel did him a lot of justice in the comics. They gave him a good-looking face. Uh nothing new in robot mode other than you see the molded in fist right there. The gimmick is now on his back. So you hit the button, the weapons flip out. So, we've got over the head, over the shoulder cannon. So, there he is. Backstreet, all armed and ready for battle. Now, we'll bring in Override. That is some sort of cool looking motorcycle. And they actually did a really good job on this motorcycle. He rolls really good. He's got some stabilizers right there on those little side sections. And I dig it. I mean, this this is a cool bike because a lot of times they u transforming motorcycles weren't that great. He has his original decals as well. Got a little headlight there on the front, some silver here on the sides, some silver there on the bottom, and decals right there on those red sections. That decal, that's a holog what did they call those? Holographics decal from Toy Hacks or Cyberglow. Cyberglow decals. See how it catches the light? had all kinds of those. I labeled up quite a few figures. So, let's see. Decal on the back. So, that's pretty much it for Override in his vehicle mode. Uh, Marvel Comics didn't like him. His biggest claim to fame in Marvel was in the G2 comic series. Megatron ripped him in half years before he did the same thing to Poor Jazz. All right. His gimmick is, you can see the blasters right there, all done up in chrome, jutting out. Not as bad as Backstreet. So, you got the exhaust right there or the exhaust. Uh there's a trigger on each little red section. So, deploy those, press those in, and the weapons, man, they flip out super fast. So, now we've got an armed motorcycle rushing in for the kill. Just notice the molded in gas tank right there. That's pretty cool. All right, let's get those locked back in place. And they lock in a lot easier than back streets. To transform him, we're gonna flip up the front of the bike. Flip back the wheel. Extend this section right here. Flip this back revealing the robot head. And just bring those forward revealing the robot arms. And there is back straight in. No, that is override in his robot mode. I love his head sculpt. That is very G1. I dig it. Kind of an asymmetrical helmet right there. He only has an antenna on one side. Got the molded in fist. You can see that hollow glow decal. Cyberglow. Still can't remember the name decal right there. But man, he's got a hell of a profile. He looks like he could be a combiner foot almost. So his weapons really cool this time. They're mounted on his arms. So let's see. Point his arms forward slightly. Deploy those buttons. Depress those buttons. And boom. He now looks like he is wielding pistols. That is so cool. I love the gimmick on him. Just looks absolutely fantastic. So there we've got Override. And now we're going to bring in the oddball of the group. This is Dogfight. Uh he is some sort of blue jet. That looks great. A little bit of paint scuffed right there. Uh the original decals on the wings. His weapons are pointing out the back too, just like thrusters. And that's about it. There's not a lot of details for him in robot mode. Now, the big difference with dog fight compared to Backstreet and Override is his weapons aren't as spring-loaded. They're kind of on gears, so they kind of have a slow deployment. You got the button right there. We're going to depress that. And they just kind of rotate over. So, now the wings now sweep back and you have the guns on top. So, looks pretty cool. But he does lose his stickers, so not as much detail for him in jet mode with the weapons deployed. So, I'm going to lock those back into place. We're going to get him transformed. Take the nose cone, bring that up, pull down, revealing the legs, and that's pretty much it. You're going to deploy the button again. Bringing the arms around. One more press brings them all the way forward. So, he just kind of points his guns forward slowly. Not very triggering. I forgot to fold that section back there. So, yeah, you lock the arms down and the button gets hid now. Press that in. So, it's a very slow deployment with his weapons. They're underlung guns. I mean, it looks cool, but I just I'm not a fan of that slow deployment. I love Look at the head sculpt. He's got missiles mounted on one side of his head and Gatling gun on the other. And there he's got a cyberglow decal added extra for him as well. So there is dogfight. So now we're going to bring in Windeper who's going to be the oddball of the trigger cons because all of the trigger cons have those slow geard driven weapons just like dogfight except for Windeeper and we'll get into that here in a second. Absolutely love Windeeper's jet mode. The color scheme looks great. This is a This figure is in well very good shape. I actually think those might be Toyax decals. Like the yellow cockpit right there. It's got the wheels underneath. Uh let's see. That's about it. That's it for Jet Mode. Let's show off his uh weapons. Once again, we have two buttons we have to depress. If I can get those to do it at the same time. Maybe not. Nope. But yeah, just like the trigger bots, these weapons are chrome and flip right out. Super fast. They're spring loaded. See if I can get those the same time. No, that's just not going to happen for me. Nope. One, the other. One more time. Ah, close enough. So, there is Windeeper with his weapons deployed. And those look great. The chrome is so shiny on those. Uh, let's go ahead and lock those back into place and get him transformed into robot mode. Very similar transformation to dog fight. You're going to bring the nose cone up. Pull the legs down. Bring the arms forward. Take this section and fold it back. And there's Windeper in robot mode, which he looks really good. I love his head sculpt. Great looking decal there on the chest and on the knees. You can see the molded in fists barely right there. uh weapon deployment. The triggers are underneath the arm, so kind of hard to get a hold of, but they deploy very fast. It almost looks like he's holding those in his hand hands as well. Now, I love this wind sweeper is my favorite of the bunch. He is just so cool. Love the look of the robot mode. Love the look of the jet. So, now let's bring in Crankase, who transforms into some sort of off-road vehicle van thing. And he looks pretty good. Love the sculpted detail there on the front. Original decals as well on the hood right there. Got some painted windows. Original decals on the back. Molded in spare tire. And little Timmy did not put that decal on straight back in the day. His weapons, they will deploy from the roof. You got one trigger. Press that. It's going to be that slow gear driven u weapon deployment, but he's got big old cannons that flip forward from the windshield. And since they're not pointing straight ahead, I'm going to assume those maybe like mortars or something. But that's really cool. And he's got a fairly decent there's a a fairly quick deployment compared to the others. Uh the gear driven ones. So yeah, just kind of wind up and ready to open fire. So let's get him transformed. Lock those guns back. Simple transformation. Pull the legs out. You're going to take this whole back section here. Rotate around. Then you're going to pull his head out. That on camera for you. Pull that out till it clicks. Move the arms forward. And there we have Crankase in his robot mode, which it's fairly generic. Not a big fan of his face sculpt because it's just a big orange blob. The head sculpt looks pretty good. I like the horns right there. Decals kind of rubbing off on the sides. Got a big screw right there in the middle of his chest. More decals for the hips. Uh, great looking molded details. Um, just like the rest of the guys, they're all monoooted, if that's a word. If it's not a word, it is now. Uh, his deployment now is kind of like backstretch. We're going to hit the trigger and the guns just kind of rotate around over his shoulder, but they're more over his shoulder than back street. Now, with these guys too, with these winding ones, you want to actually hold the trigger down because if I just do a quick press, they don't go all the way up. You have to hold it in and they will flip all the way around. So, there we got crankcase all armed and ready for battle and looking pretty cool. And bringing in Ruckus, who is just I love this vehicle mode. He's some sort of off-road buggy. And I believe he's got brand new toy hacks decals as well because those just look too good to be original vintage. So there's decals here on the side, decals here on the front. One of those holo glow decals once again. And let's see, big beefy tires. He can roll across the table really, really good. His deployment is very simple. Same thing. You barely touch the trigger once and that did not work. Let me try this again. His is the most temperamental of all of my trigger bots. Trigger cons. There we go. One simple quick push and the weapons pop up once again. Kind of like mortars. So, we've got that Dune Buggy all armed and ready for battle. Let's push those back down. Get him transformed. We're going to pull out the front slightly. Rotate the foot around. Bring the arms forward slightly. That one's sticking. There we go. And there we have Ruckus in his robot mode. And his robot mode doesn't look too bad. Once again, love the collar scheme. Got a great looking head sculpt. It's all one collar, but you can at least make everything out. I do like the crest on his helmet. Purple Decepticon insignia decals there for the waist. Then you got the decals that were on his legs or the front of the vehicle earlier. He's still got that big old mono foot. Weapon deployment. Let's hit that trigger. Hold it down all the way this time. And those flip out over his shoulders. Once again, kind of like mortars because they're not facing forward all the way. So there you go, guys. There is 1988's Triggerbots and Trigger Cons. A fun group of figures. Super simple transformations, fun gimmick. And I do believe one of the big arguments with this set is we think that dogfight and wind sweeper were switched back in the day. Wind sweeper should have been a trigger bot where dog fight should have been a trigger con since they share the trigger gimmick of the opposing teams.
