Fils entered the tournament as the number 21 seed, and got a bye in the first round. In the second round he took on Halys and after a close first set he would get through in straight 7-6 6-1. In the third round he took on Hurkacz, the ninth seed, and after dropping the second set, he would get through in three, 6-1 6-7 6-3. In the fourth round he took on De Minaur, the fifth seed, and he had no problem getting through in straight 6-3 6-4 to advance to the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals he took on Tsitsipas, who had beaten Menshik and Djokovic along the way. There was no problem for Fils getting through in straight 6-3 6-2 to advance to the semifinal. In the semifinals Fils would take on Khachanov, the seventh seed. There was no problem for Fils getting through in straight 6-3 6-4 to advance to the final.
