Video summary
The video explores the high risks and technical challenges of attempting DIY haircuts on thick, healthy hair without professional training or proper tools. In one scenario, a woman uses dull kitchen scissors to execute a drastic pixie cut, ignoring warnings about her hair's density and the necessity of thinning shears. Her lack of elevation and layering techniques results in a severely damaged look with jagged edges and an unintended mullet effect, illustrating how mistakes on thick hair become immediately visible and difficult to repair. Another segment features a creator attempting Brad Mondo's "butterfly cut" tutorial; while she initially struggles with sectioning and brush selection, she eventually succeeds by wetting her hair, identifying the apex correctly, and cutting above her fingers to remove dead ends and add movement.
Further examples highlight specific technical pitfalls, such as a French bob attempt where the creator sections her hair into three parts instead of four and cuts dry or semi-dry hair with existing wave patterns from clips. The narrator critiques this approach, explaining that lifting hair while cutting creates unwanted layers and an A-line shape rather than a straight line, and that cutting without pressing the hair flat against the neck risks jagged ends once styled. Additionally, a brief tutorial emphasizes the importance of cutting bangs dry to gauge length accurately and using diagonal angles for softness, reinforcing the idea that proper technique is essential to avoid ruining one's hairstyle.
Despite these significant technical flaws, including the removal of substantial amounts of hair in the bob attempt, some outcomes turn out surprisingly well due to the creator's naturally straight texture. The final look of the French bob is praised as beautiful and perfect for her hair type, transforming what could have been a disaster into a successful style change, even though it lacks professional texturizing that would prevent bulkiness at the ends. Ultimately, the video serves as a cautionary tale advising against DIY cuts on thick hair without the right equipment or skills, noting that while some lucky attempts succeed, most mistakes lead to messy, unbalanced styles requiring professional rescue.

How bad can a DIY haircut get until it
becomes unsalvageable? Hi, beautiful.
You look ravishing today. Today, we're
watching people cut their own hair with
way too much confidence. I'm breaking
down exactly where it goes wrong and
whether any of it can still be saved.
Let's get into it.
I will be cutting my hair today and I
will be cutting it very, very short. Am
I professional? No. Have I accidentally
shaved my head on the internet before?
Yes. I don't think I've seen this video
before, but it looks very familiar. I
think she color her hair last time. What
was it, you guys?
>> Um, so this is what my hair looks like
right now. It's [music] actually very
pretty.
>> Why are we cutting this hair? No.
[screaming]
Why? Why? Why? [music]
>> It is so luxurious. When she took out
that hair, I was like,
like, oh my god, it is so thick, [music]
so luscious, so healthy. I'm sad. Okay,
I'm already sad.
>> It's very healthy. It's mostly virgin
hair. At the very ends is like processed
dyed hair. But 95% of my hair is virgin,
never dyed. I don't even really put heat
on it cuz I don't have time for that. Um
hair. It's very shiny, very healthy,
very pretty, very [music] thick. You
keep on naming reasons why we shouldn't
cut it. I want to know the reasons why
we are cutting it. Please.
>> So, for the first time in my life, I'm
not cutting my hair because it is
damaged or [music] breaking off or ugly
or I'm balding. It's literally just
because I want short hair. I love me a
cute short hair. This is the inspo pick
we're going for. Yeah. Yeah.
>> We're cutting all of her hair off. She's
doing like a full-on pixie cut. Holy
[ __ ]
>> And this is what I want to do. He says
office kitchen supply. Oh, well, I'm
already here. No wonder they were so
cheap. I was wondering why shears were
so cheap.
>> Great. We're using kitchen scissors
[music] instead of real cutting scissors
for hair, which is going to be much more
dull than real cutting scissors. It will
do the job just fine, but obviously
would rather her use real hair cutting
scissors. Especially cuz she has such
thick hair. Like cutting through this is
going to be a pain in the ass. To
>> be honest, I don't really know where to
start. Um, I know I should section this
part off cuz it's like the top of my
head and like very important, you know,
>> and a dream is the highlight here. Doing
a pixie cut on this thick of hair would
be hard for even a hairdresser to do.
The hair is so thick that if you put any
wrong cuts in there, it is going to show
immediately. [music] It's going to be
like cut mark right there. So, hopefully
there's a lot of elevation. Hope there's
a lot of layering. And hopefully there's
some thinning shears, which there isn't
cuz she already showed what she got and
she did not get thinning shears. Flip
that out the way. And then I'm going to
do just a ponytail moment. I mean a
split down the middle. Wait, this is
actually the pressure is getting lesser.
Okay. And then we're just going to do
like two ponytails.
>> Okay.
>> We're just going to full send it cuz if
I don't cut it, then that's it.
>> Goodbye long healthy hair. See you
later.
>> See you later. I love that.
>> Okay. I want to make sure you guys have
a good angle. All right.
First chop. First chop.
>> No, [groaning]
don't do it like this. I think she's
going for like an undercut. I don't
know. The thing she showed was a pixie
cut, which is kind of layered, like 90°
layers in the entire head. The middle
part of that ponytail is going to be
very short, like a half an inch. And
then all the hair from here overdirected
back is going to be very long. And same
with the hair back here. Because
everything's going into this middle
ponytail, that's not going to be easy to
cut. Um, if you want to just get rid of
some hair overall before you start
really going in and cutting, just pick
up pieces and cut. That'll be the best
way of doing this.
>> Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Commit. Commit.
Commit.
I'm going to [music] need some
commitment from you, Christina, right
now.
>> Commit to the bit.
>> To the bit. After this, there really is
no going back. So, we're just going to
>> Oh my god. Wait.
Holy [ __ ]
>> Yo, look at how much hair. That's an
entire head of hair for [music] one
person. Actually, it's more hair than I
have my entire head in that one
ponytail.
>> I committed.
>> Yeah, you did.
>> Ooh, I [ __ ] up already.
>> Did you think it was going to look good?
Cuz no.
>> Oh [ __ ] Gosh, [laughter]
it's okay. All right.
>> Okay. So, how are we going to make this
better? How are we going to make this at
all better? Because now we're just
cutting random pieces of I'm glad you
cut the mullet off, though. I was kind
of digging that vibe with the the short
and then the mullet on the bottom is
kind of cool. We got to layer it. So, if
you want to do this right, I don't think
you want to, but I'm going to tell you
how. Anyways, you would take sections
like slices like this. Okay? Elevate.
Cut at [music] 90°.
cut all over. Everything is the same
length. It'll look really pretty and
it'll have a nice bevel to it. It'll
make your head look nice and round and
you can style it in that finger wave
thing you showed us earlier.
>> Why does this always happen when I cut
my hair? I have this kind of section
that's like
that was way too much hair to cut. But
>> yeah. [music]
>> Oh well.
>> Girl, now we have short pieces [music]
in the random center of the side of your
head. Random as hell. That looks painful
in a lot of ways for your hand and your
hair and everything. Everything's
pulling, I'm sure. And those scissors
are not strong enough by any means.
>> These scissors suck.
>> Yeah.
[sighs]
>> Like, let's just both take a breather.
>> I really [ __ ] up by getting these [ __ ]
scissors. They suck.
chalking at my hair.
>> Oh, this is going so poorly.
Oh god.
>> Come on. [clears throat] Cut. Literally.
Come on. God. [music]
It's not cutting, guys. It's not
cutting.
That's hella uneven. Oh, that feels so
good, though. Oh my god. I'm crazy.
>> It cut. It finally cut. That was the
most stressful 3 minutes of my entire
life. I hated every second of it. Please
get better shears next time. That was
horrible.
>> Okay, I forgot low key to press record
for y'all, but
>> Oh, that looks [ __ ] crazy. That looks
awful. Wow. Don't ever do that again in
your life, please.
>> I'm basically just trying to make it
even.
>> It's just that these scissors are really
bad. They're like really bad at cutting.
You saw that? And there's so much hair
on my lap.
I even have hair in my lip gloss. I'm
really scared about the top though.
>> It's not getting any better. She just
keeps on taking pieces and cutting them
and it's not looking remotely better.
This is already too short and completely
uneven. I'm definitely interested though
to see what she does with the top of her
head because that still has to be cut.
Okay, let's just leave my hair like this
cuz then I can like pretend I still have
hair, but it's just not as thick. It's
thin. Like, this is what thin hair would
be
>> for me.
>> Honestly, kind of cute. Let's just
ignore what happened underneath there
and let's leave it like that. I think
that's a better idea. What do you guys
think? [laughter]
>> Maybe not. For the top, I'm kind of
going to just freestyle it, which could
be totally dangerous, but also like
you see my techniques I'm using.
[clears throat]
>> No, absolutely not. We need scissors
that work. And oh my god, I've never
seen anybody just pick up their hair
like that and cut it an inch from the
root without even giving a [ __ ] And I
love it.
>> I am clearly not a professional. No,
>> this is clearly not a tutorial.
>> No. God damn it.
>> So, if you decide to follow this, that's
amongst your own free will.
>> What would they be following? It's quite
literally nothing to actually follow
here. You're literally just taking
random pieces and chopping them off.
Though, this technique is better than
the one we just had with the ponytails
because now she is kind of cutting the
sections at 90° in a little bit of a
way. is not as precise as a hairdresser
would do it, but she's getting that
short layering going on, which I can see
happening in the back.
>> Oh my god.
>> Uhoh.
>> Uh-oh.
Okay, we cut one side. Now we're going
to cut the other.
I love that she's not panicking at all.
Like, she's confident still. She's
running through this and just chopping
[ __ ] up. You might as well shave it at
this point.
>> Oh my god.
>> My husband probably thinks I'm insane.
>> I can't get over how much hair she's
cutting.
>> Let me see if there's like any I'm sure
there's like some pieces where they're
still pretty long. Let me just cut any
stragglers. Regroup and I'll come back
to you guys. Okay, this is literally all
of my hair.
>> You're telling me she's done? That's the
cut. Ain't no way.
>> It's been about a month. So, we have a
month of growth here. I guess this is my
first update, but this is kind of like
one of the main styles I've been wearing
my hair. I basically just like flatten
it down, part it down the middle
usually, and then do a few swoops in the
front. Is it completely even in a
professional cut? Obviously not. I'm not
a professional. Do I love it? Yes. Yes,
I do.
>> So, that's the result. That's it. That's
all she wrote. She is so beautiful that
like the haircut somehow looks fine on
her. But god, it is a mess. It's like
she turns to the side. There is long
hair everywhere that shouldn't be there.
There's a kind of a mullet in the back.
I don't know what the hell is going on.
I mean, it would be pretty easy to just
make this a little bit better with just
a few more cuts, you know, just a little
bit more of that 90° angle, cutting it
all around. Don't ever do that again.
Please, just And thank god you get the
face card to pull us off cuz [music] it
would have been bad. It would really
been bad. And for that, I'm gonna have
to give you a two on the mango reader.
>> Hi guys, I'm cutting my hair. My hair is
like very beautiful right now. Like I
love the way that it looks, but my goal
is shoulder length. I think that'll look
really cute. I'm very nervous. Why am I
never nervous whenever it comes to
cutting my hair?
>> Another person with absolutely gorgeous
thick hair. Ooh, this is going to be
pretty. She's doing a bob. I think
>> I looked up a whole bunch of different
videos on how to do it. A lot of it says
to straighten your hair. I'm just going
to cut it like this. And I'm not going
to cut it wet. I'm going to cut it dry.
I'm following the Brad Mondo method.
>> All right, Brad Mondo. I don't know
which method she's talking about, but
we're going to find out.
>> Where you put it [music] into ponytails
and then kind of get it like right
behind your ear. This is not going to be
perfect. And that leaves like all of
this, which is a lot of hair.
>> I know the one now. I do. I It was the
one length cut tutorial of mine. This
one where I put it into ponytails and I
cut everything straight across. Great. I
know some of y'all out there love a on
one length haircut. Couldn't be me. I
don't love a one length haircut. I love
layering. It just adds sexuality to the
hair. It makes it I don't know. I just
love it.
>> So, I think I'm going to separate this
into [music] two pieces as well. Realize
I just kind of jumped into this. Like, I
am so ready to cut my hair short. This
is something I've been wanting to do
forever now, but I've always been like
so nervous and so scared to. Can I also
just say I love when you guys [music]
post YouTube videos. Can everybody make
more YouTube videos? Like I know
everybody's about the short form life,
but can we make YouTube videos again? I
love watching them and I love seeing you
guys do to your hair.
>> So I'm happy that I am actually doing
it. But [music] these back ones, I am
kind of pulling it more towards like in
the back of my head and then putting the
rubber band. Not cutting this much.
>> Exactly what she said. Do exactly that
if you've ever tried this haircut. We
got to make sure the back is straight
down and then we put the elastic in when
it is straight down our back. We don't
want to pull it forward or direct it
anywhere because the moment we do
overdirection, what happens, guys? We
add length [clears throat] when it's
overdirected. We want to just direct it
right from the place it lives. Boop.
Right down.
>> I kind of like pulling it, seeing if
it's [music] like even these two. I'm so
nervous. Oh, that's too low. Now,
another thing is like don't pull it like
this because then that is not going to
turn out great. All right. So, from the
back [music] these two even.
>> Yay. She's so smart. Like I love this.
She's like, "Don't pull it when it's
forward like that." Not a good idea.
Exactly. Don't pull it any way. You
start pulling the hair when it's forward
like that, you're going to have overd
direction issues and you're going to end
up with weird long pieces throughout the
head.
>> We're just going to do this. This is
like definitely longer than I want it to
be, but we're just going to test it out.
So, here we go.
>> Cut above the elastic. It's there to
catch the hair for you guys. You make it
so hard for yourselves.
>> I'm also not tugging my hair.
Oh my goodness, y'all. I love doing
this. You see how like choppy that is?
So, now I'm just going to kind of even
it out towards more straight. All right.
>> Chop. Cha churoo, baby. Oh, this is
looking nice. Yeah,
look how blunt those ends are. Oh,
they're so healthy.
>> Now, the ultimate test. See how bad
I did. So, it didn't come out bad. It's
definitely choppy as you can see.
>> That looks wonderful. If you want steps
in your hair,
it's okay. Something went wrong. And I
think the elastics were at a bit
different heights. Plus, we cut below
the elastic, which makes you add a
little bit more length. Just don't do
that.
>> I'm going to try to like fix it up from
like right [music] here to make it
straight.
>> How does it look?
>> It looks very jagged. She had extremely
thick hair. This is the problem. If you
don't put layers in your hair when it's
this thick, you're going to always see
issues like this unless you get it
professionally done cuz you just can't
make it that straight yourself. It's too
hard.
>> So, I saw with the back here that it
definitely [music]
No, I do kind of like the U thing that
it was going for, but no, no, no, no.
We're We're [music] not doing that. So,
now I'm going to try this method where I
just kind of cut it across.
>> Wet your hair. You have so much wave in
your hair right now that I don't think
is there every time you style your hair.
Please.
>> I found that that helped [music] a lot.
Kind of help make it more straight.
Okay. I found that that helped. I think
the rubber bands did work, but I think
like just using that to get the length
off and then doing this to shape it up,
I think is the best bet here. Okay, that
did not come out half bad. So, how's the
back look? Is it like pretty okay? Wow,
that like did not turn out as bad as I
thought that it was going to.
>> Wait, she really tore. Something went
very right there. She really cleaned
that up perfectly cuz the back even
looks nice and scoopy. Whoop. Like a
little bit of this. It's just really
nice.
>> All right, we're going to do this again.
I've heard that if you have thick hair,
doing like instead of four rubber bands,
doing six to eight [music] is better.
>> What do you mean again? We just made it
perfect. Why are we doing it again? I
guess that is a good technique to use,
right? Like, so if you're going really
short, test out your cutting skills
first on a longer length and then go
shorter after once you feel more
confident. She's on to something
actually. Oh.
>> Um, and I think eight is really going to
work for my hair. Like I don't have
thick hair, but I have a lot of thin
hair, if that makes sense. I have them
all in now.
>> You have thick fine hair is what you
would say.
>> Now I'm going to make it the length that
I want. I think I'm going to try to aim
to cut [music] at my collar bone. Take
two.
>> I wish you would cut above the elastic.
>> Um, let me put this back up.
Oh my goodness. Oh, that looks horrible
already. Those came out pretty straight.
>> I was going to say when you were cutting
it, you legs don't look the same. One of
them was like that long. One of them was
that long. It was kind of just all over
the place. Babe, what the hell happened?
>> Ooh, but that's that's bad.
That's bad.
>> Oh, one section is an inch longer than
the other. Explain yourself.
Oh, Nelly. Oh my goodness, that's bad.
Okay, let's see if I can like even this
out the same way that I did last time.
I'm just GOING TO
>> GO ACROSS.
>> WHOOPS. What happened there?
>> All right, so it's not all [music] one
length, but I'm not horrified by what it
[music] looks like. You know, it's like
wonder if I just pull it to the front
and kind of just like, you know, whack
it here.
>> She's going in. She's putting in the
work to get this all nice and even. And
it is working. I feel like it is getting
much more even as she keeps cutting. So,
that's good. And it's not getting that
much shorter, which is the thing you
need to watch out for when you just keep
on cutting. It gets shorter and shorter
and then all of a sudden it's like an
inch shorter than you wanted it. Yeah.
>> Here is all my hair. I cut like a good
bit off. little [music] snippets, but I
cut like a good bit off.
>> Yeah, you did.
>> I'm proud of myself.
>> Oh, that is a lot of hair. Damn.
>> One last thing before I let you go. Look
at how cute this is. So, I just got out
the shower. Yeah. Like, this looks so
cute. And like it's still wet right now,
but I'm hoping that it'll hold my curls
a lot better being that it'll it's like
[music] short.
>> Oh. [laughter] Oh, I love that she's so
happy with the cut. That makes me so
happy. I love when I can help provide a
skill to you at home to your own hair so
that you feel more confident. That's
literally all I've ever wanted. Thank
you for trying out my haircut. It looks
wonderful with the waves. It's so
beautiful. The only thing I'm going to
say is, of course, like I always say, I
want layers in your hair. It will also
help these curls stay curlier and look
more sort of rounded. But if you don't
want that style, totally get it. You
know what finishes look perfectly? The
iconic wavete wave foam. Ooh, it will
give her hair crunchfree waves [music]
of her dreams and will look so fresh and
delicious. And if you want to buy some X
model for yourself, make sure to check
us out with the links below. So pretty.
And you did such a great job. I'm going
to have to give that a solid five on the
modern meter. Today's video is sponsored
by Lifen, my love, my life and I have
been partnered for literally years and I
love them so much. Their hair tools are
incredible. This is the new Swift 4 hair
care dryer and it is sick. It has this
beautiful premium aluminum body, the
iconic LED light ring, and this brand
new innovation called the oil nourishing
nozzle. It is so cool. It's designed to
dispense oil through the airflow while
you blow dry right through here. And of
course, I had to put this new blow dryer
to the test. First, let's do the normal
routine, right? We blow dry the hair,
then we put the oil in our hands and put
it all throughout the hair. That's the
typical routine with the Swift 4. That
is all incorporated into one single
step. So, here you can see me rough
drying the hair as usual, but with the
oil diffuser also attached. The warmth
of the air through the blow dryer helps
expand the hair fiber so that that oil
can reach deeper into [music] the hair
strand. I'm using my HydroFi smoothing
oil because it smells so good and it's
so luxurious. Then, I just attach that
nozzle to the dryer and it goes click
cuz it's a magnet and it's sick. I
switch the dryer into hair care mode.
This blowdryer also has a negative ion
technology which helps reduce static for
smoother, sexier, glossier looking hair.
Life describes this as getting healthier
looking hair with every single use. So,
let's look at the results. Our normal
routine versus the new one with the
Swift 4. On this side, the normal
routine, it's looking good, but it's not
looking as good as it could. On this
side with the Swift 4, ooh, this looks
good, shiny, healthy. So, if you want to
bring home that spaike experience
[music] and that nourishing treatment,
Swift 4 is for you. Visit Life's
official website or Amazon using the
links right down below. This is sexy as
hell. Now, let's get back to what you
came here for. Holy [ __ ] this woman got
3.7 million views on this video. I
follow Brado's butterfly cut tutorial at
home. Terrified. Better get a good
transformation here.
>> I'm never really happy with the way my
hair turns out at the salon. So, today I
thought I would try Brad Mondo's
butterfly cut on my over 60 hair.
[laughter]
>> Why am I so excited?
>> Now, I do have bangs that I'm working on
growing [music] out into more of a
curtain bang. They're not there yet. So,
this is going to be a butterfly cut with
[music] bangs. We'll see how it goes.
>> I am so happy to see her cutting her
hair because these ends have seen better
days. Let's be honest, guys. Come on.
Let's be honest. They need a little
trimmy trim. I think this is going to
lift her up because this hair is a
little down at the [music] bottom. It's
a little bit like weighing her down.
This is going to bring
aireriness to her. So, the supplies you
need for this haircut are a hair
detangler, two ponytail holders, a fine
tothed comb, a detangling brush if you
have it, and a [music] pair of scissors.
>> Wow, she is so prepared for this. And
those hair cutting scissors couldn't be
any smaller. Go off. But damn, those are
tiny. Teensy tiny. That's like you got
like an inch to work with big. I prefer
bigger ones, but like do you, you know?
>> And the first thing Brad says is that
you [music] need to have very wet hair.
Mine obviously is not. So, I'll be right
back.
>> He also suggests putting in a leave-in
conditioner or detangler.
>> She wet her hair. Yes,
>> that is great news, you guys. Next time
she should use Hydri brings that life
back to your hair. Um, definitely love
that she's using a hydrating mist
because this is going to help her
detangle her hair and easily work
through it and put those ponytails up
rather than kind of ripping her hair out
like I see so many of you guys do when
you try to put these ponytails [music]
up without any conditioning mist or
anything. So, that's awesome.
>> And then I'm brushing through my hair to
make sure that there are no tangles
before [music] I get started. Now, it's
very wet, dripping wet, and that's what
you want. All right, so the first thing
you need to do is find the apex. And I'm
[music] just going to use this comb. If
you set a comb on top of your head while
you're looking straight ahead, where the
comb balances is [music] the apex.
>> Some of y'all were good students in
school, I can tell. And some of you not
as much. I know she's got that apex.
She's got that hair brush. She's got
everything lined up perfectly for the
best braondo butterfly cut possible.
>> And behind your ear.
And pull that hair [music] forward. And
then that goes back. And then from the
apex again and down to [music] behind
the back of the other ear.
And that comes forward.
>> She made that sectioning look so easy.
And yes, to me it's easy. But to so many
of you, I see people struggle with just
making that section from here to here.
It can be easy.
Right in the front of the head.
>> That one might be a little far back.
>> And I lied. And what the hell is that?
Cuz that looks crazy. I know we can do
better than that. I gas up a lot and
then
down the hill we went. Let's get that
line a little straighter, guys. We
definitely want to be nice. Not like
absolutely perfect, just nice. [music]
And we want to go right here to right
here. Or else you're going to have
issues where the layering is in the
wrong place.
>> I feel like I have too much.
>> Yeah, I was just going to say that's way
too much hair in the front of your head.
>> There. That feels better.
>> I went too far back. So, [music] maybe
do this one a little bit. And now you're
going to take this hair. This is when
it's helpful to use your brush. And all
of this is going [music] to come
forward. You're you're directing all of
this hair forward.
>> The brush is not quite doing the job
because the bristles are so spread apart
and so flimsy. I think at this point she
can definitely transition to a comb and
get this much smoother. Hopefully she
does.
>> I'm using [music] a different brush. My
hair is really fine. If you have really
thick hair, you might need that.
>> Thank god we changed the brush because
that was not working and it was looking
crazy and now it's looking a lot better.
detangling brush, but I don't have a lot
of hair, so I was having trouble
grabbing it all and getting it pulled
over. You want it really, really smooth.
I watched him reacting to people doing
this, and the the number one thing I
think I saw him saying was that they
were placing it wrong on their forehead.
Most people were putting it here. You
want it between your eyebrows.
>> Yes.
>> If you go too high with it, then you're
going to get little bitty tiny bangs and
they're going to be much shorter than
you want. Exactly. You guys, you have to
think about it like where you put it
here. Okay. If you're cutting that [ __ ]
really short, your bangs are going to
start there, right? This is kind of a
rounded layered haircut. You're going to
get a lot of beveling around the face, a
lot of good face framing. So, if you put
it here and you cut short, you're going
to get [ __ ] baby bangs. That's not going
to be cute.
>> Okay. Now, the back one, [music] the
back section, you want to bring that
ponytail straight up. You want to get it
as high as you [music] possibly can.
>> And she put it up a bit too high. The
thought was there. All right, we're
getting that back ponytail in. Really
directing it high up like Miss Ariana
Grande.
Now, for this front section, [music] you
want to pull and carry it forward
following the line that it's [music]
already taking. You don't want to cut it
down here. You're redirecting it. And
then you want to keep the direction
going. You're going to use your fine
tooth [music] comb and comb all of those
hairs going in the right in the same
direction. And you can see I don't have
a ton of hair. But you want to make sure
that you cut the same amount off the
front that you do the back. And so I
think I'm going to go with
>> before she says it. Just make sure you
cut enough off. Please tell me you're
going to cut enough off. I don't really
know what that means, guys. Maybe I
should give like a suggestion. An inch
is not enough. This is about an inch.
Two fingers. 2 in. I would say that's
enough. More than that, definitely
enough.
>> Three fingers. [music]
I know it's not a lot, but you can
always cut more. You can't put it back
on. [music] So, I am going to I have all
of this. I'm going to pull it out in
[music] the direction that that ponytail
was already going. I've got about three
fingers worth. And I'm going to cut
above my fingers
because then you can hold on to the
hair.
>> Oh my god. All those dead ends just in
her fingers like that. Just get the [ __ ]
you get out of her head.
>> A lot of people will point cut it. I
mean, I guess you can. I don't know. He
said, "You don't really just kind of
stay there."
>> She was about to trigger me because she
was about to point and she goes, "He
says don't do it, but I'm going to." You
see, everybody just wants to do they're
like, "Let me [ __ ] it." He said, "You
don't really need to because it's
already overdirected so much that the
point cutting doesn't [music] really do
anything. And then if you want, you can
take it out and see what you've got. And
if it's not enough, you can do more." I
think it's going to be enough cuz I
don't want it to be super short. But you
can see already how I've got some face
framing going.
>> I'm excited to see this in final look
because the front already looks fire. I
know you guys probably aren't seeing the
vision yet. Just wait. You're going to
see the vision come to life. It's all
going to be like whoop. So far the front
obviously where it's wet, guys. It's
wet. She has hair that's on the finer
side. It's going to look great when it's
blown out. You got to you got to wait
for the [ __ ] And let's make sure we do
the back the same way though. Huh.
>> You take the back pony,
>> right?
>> And you're going to comb it straight up.
I'm going to back up so you can see a
little better. [music] And you just want
all of those hairs going in the same
direction, nice and straight. Clamp it
with your fingers. Follow the scissors
with your fingers. I want about three
fingers. So, I'm going to come down just
a little bit further.
>> I'm glad she only came down a little bit
further because she got to cut those
dead ends off. Like, she got to cut more
off the back than the front. The back
looks like it doesn't have any layering
in already. And the front looks like it
did have layering already. [music] So,
we got to overcompensate for that.
>> And now, since I've got my fingers
clamped, now I can move the hair to
where I can see what I'm doing. And
[music] I can cut
above.
>> You're going to cut those knuckles right
off. The knuckles stick out a little bit
on your hands. You don't want to cut
above. You want to cut below where it's
flat.
>> My fingers. And hopefully my two
sections, this was the front section.
They're about the [laughter] same.
>> It's like three pieces of hair. She's
like, I guess it's the [ __ ] same. I
don't know.
>> So, I've cut off a lot of the scraggly
ends. The other thing I'm doing is
cutting off most of the growout [music]
from when I stopped coloring my hair
last April. So I you can see I still
have
about that much to grow out and then all
of my hair will be my natural color. So
let's get rid of this guy and comb it
the way it's supposed to go. I'm going
to part it all the way down the back and
I'm going to pull the hair forward so I
can kind of check and make sure there's
no weird drop offs.
>> I love that she's checking your haircut
with her hands. That is great to do. I
don't think I said to do that, but you
can definitely check with your hands and
then resection and redo it if it's all
kinds of [ __ ] up. So [music] that's
great. Just again going with the hands.
See where the hair ends and then cut it
again.
>> My bangs are kind of starting to angle
the way I want them to. And [music] it's
really not bad. I think I'm going to
leave it alone. I did not cut off very
much hair, but I think I got a lot of
nice layers. And let's check the back.
First off, I rough dry it just to get a
lot of the moisture out [music] so it
doesn't take quite as long when I pick
up the round brush. And I do the bangs
with a round brush and the regular
dryer. And then to help with smoothing,
I'll use the detangling brush again just
to get out some of the moisture.
>> All right, she is blow drying, styling,
doing the works to her hair. And o, it
is looking so good. Let's check out the
final result.
>> That's just blown out. I really like it.
It has so much movement. I mean, it took
like no time at all. When my bangs grow
out more and I [music] have more face
framing gear, I think I'll like it even
more. But I love the way it frames my
face. And in the back, I always have
this extra part here that I have to
fiddle with and spray to get it to
cover. Look [music] at how it moves. And
there you have it. My Brad Mondo DIY
butterfly haircut. [music] And I love
it.
>> Oh my [laughter] god,
this looks so good.
She said it. I mean, just the volume it
gives around her face. It really frames
her face and connects those curtain
bangs with the rest of her haircut.
Like, everything just really came
together, the movement, the body, the
volume, everything just looks sexy. Ba
va voom. And gave her hair more life.
And I am just blown away at how perfect
that looks. Wow. That is going to be a
solid five on the monometer. Woo! Yeah.
>> Today we're cutting bangs. [music]
Cutting bangs. And I'm going to show you
how to cut your own bangs at home.
Whether you're just bored of the length
of your hair, but you don't want to lose
a lot of length with a absolute [music]
crazy haircut, or you just want
something different, I'm going to show
you how to cut your bangs and style
[music] them so you can actually enjoy
bangs.
>> Show us, girl. Show us how it's done,
and I will judge every part of you
telling us how to do it.
>> So, the very, very important thing is to
[music] section your hair. Also, cut
your bangs dry. Do not wet your bangs
and then cut them. and they will always
end up too short. By cutting them dry,
you can see exactly how much you're
losing in length. So, today we're going
to be cutting a length that is long
enough to get out of your face and grow
them out quickly if you hate them. So,
not too short, but not too long to just
be a random layer. And I don't want
these [music] bangs to be too far back.
So, the further back you go, the thinner
the rest of your hair is going to look.
So, I'm going to keep my hair in my
bangs, not going back too far.
>> That's definitely true. However, I like
to explain it more of like if your
head's tilted forward like [music] this,
you kind of want everything that
automatically kind of comes into your
face to be cut. Obviously, if you like
put your head all the way down, it's
going to all go forward. But like, if
you just kind of rock your head forward
a little bit, you can kind of see which
hair naturally comes forward. Some
people have thicker hair, thinner hair,
whatever. So, you might need to put more
hair in the front than others. You know,
don't go halfway back cuz it'll look
ridiculous.
>> I want enough bang, right, to look like
a bang, but I don't want to go back too
far and lose a lot of volume towards the
back of my head. And as you can see, I
have breakage here. So, I'm going to be
having these bangs graduate a little
bit. And I'm stopping sectioning right
at my temple. So, that's as far as back
as I want to go with these bangs. I
actually That's a lot. I keep thinking
she has extensions in her hair because
her hair is like so nice and thick and
it's so blonde. It just looks [music]
like she's extensions. It's like too
perfect.
>> But we are going to graduate it. So you
can feel how thick your bangs are going
to be. All right. So these [music] are
going to be pretty thick. I might not go
back that far.
>> Those are some big babies. That's a
Taylor Swift bang right there. Right in
front of the head. Let's get rid of some
other hair. Huh.
>> Once you cut, you can't cut less. And I
think that is good. So, I would say from
my hairline to where the bangs, how full
they're going to be is about an inch. I
would say that I have definitely
gathered all of the length that's
starting to break off around my [music]
face. I'm going to start by cutting
straight across because I want a
graduation. Okay, there's [music] no
going back. And I give you this tip.
Don't chop in.
>> That's a whole lot of hair and no
overdirection. I'm buckling in, seeing
what she's going to do here, but I'm not
living for it so far.
>> Use the pressure at the back of the
scissors to cut. Do not use the tips to
just start cutting. You're going to saw
your hair. Okay, here we go. And you
might end up seeing my mirror, but I
really need it close. So, so I'm using
the weight of the back of the scissors.
What is this video turning into? Okay,
cutting dry. Let's go.
Oh.
>> [screaming]
>> All right. So,
>> that's a blunt bang. It's like a a bob
starting here. I don't know where she's
going with this. Obviously, you guys
know me. I like to overdirect the
opposite way it lives. So, it's coming
from here. We go over here. It's coming
from here. We go over here. And we cut
on a diagonal so that when you let it
down, you get a nice sweeping effect.
That's it. It's that simple.
>> Now, we have the bangs. And what if I
was like, I'm done. We're not. Okay. So
now what you want to do is start cuz I'm
going to wear mine at my center part. So
I'm going to take my scissors. I've seen
people cut up, cut down just so you know
where you're going with it all. And then
use the weight of the scissors here. And
I'm going to start cutting right at the
outer corner of my eye and just
gradually cut here.
>> I mean, if this works for you, obviously
it's a way of doing it. I think it's
difficult to do this way and a little
bit difficult. I already said that.
Besides overdirecting each side thing
that I just explained, you can also use
a razor at this point. Like if she just
wants to go in and freehand it with a
razor so much easier than cutting with
scissors.
>> Ooh, I'm using the weight of the
scissors here.
Cutting downward. And actually, I am
going to go up on this side.
>> It's just getting complicated.
>> So, let me eat my words on [music] the
going up. Some angles are difficult to
get.
And then I'm just gonna start shaping
the length itself. [music]
And now
gonna get this part out of the way.
>> It doesn't feel like it's getting any
more like diagonal. It feels like it's
still staying [music] pretty straight or
even getting straighter somehow. I don't
know. Maybe I'm crazy, but like what?
>> And now I'm going to go ahead and chip
[music] into the bangs cuz we don't want
harsh edges. We are not going for a
straight across bang. So [sighs]
>> I need to stop getting worked up for
point cutting. iron deck because it's
clear that everybody's going to do it
and I have no control over it, so I
should just let it be. Um, but I can't.
Thinning shears would have been awesome
for here, too, guys. Instead of point
cutting, thinning shears. Okay, I can
get behind thinning shears for sure. But
this is doing absolutely nothing. I
don't even know where she's going with
this.
>> And I'm going to make it the thinnest
texturize it the thinnest in the center.
And you can really see what you're doing
here. Angle, [music] angle, angle.
Leaving it the longest at the outer part
of the hair. All right. Okay, I'm going
to do the same thing with these
sections.
>> We can also take the hair from where it
lives, bring it up, and really [music]
point cut deepen the hair at a diagonal
instead of really straight down like
this. Kind of like this. Not like this,
like this. When we lift it up, we're
creating over direction, which gives you
nice softness when you point cut into
the hair instead of point cutting it
like this, which can give you a lot of
issues.
>> Texturize, making it longer on the outer
part of the hair. So, we're going to go
[music] from the inside out and just
pull your scissors downward. When you
get towards the outer edge, same thing.
Just texturizing and chipping away at
the [music] weight of the end of the
hair. You can start to see it come
together. Now, I'm just grabbing all of
the hair. Comb it out.
>> I hate to be the bearer of the bad news,
but it doesn't look any different. Like,
we just keep on we're cutting, but some
for some reason look keeps looking the
same.
>> And I'm going to go ahead and texturize
this way. Just thinning out the bangs,
keeping it longest on the outer part.
Looks crazy right now, but we're about
to wet and style and then go in and cut
more.
>> I do like the idea of wetting and
styling because it really does bring
everything together. She is totally
correct in that. So, I'm glad she's
going to wet and style and then do more
cutting. That's very a professional
thing that we would do is style and cut
a little bit more
>> because I'm going for that like
volumized, you know, and [music] then
kind of fade it into the sides of my
hair. So, I'm going to go ahead just
kind of fluff it up with my fingers and
cut along my face. Now that it's
texturized now that we've established
the length we want, we can go in and
really shape things up.
>> All right, the vision is coming to life.
I'm seeing it now. She has a little bit
of that diagonal bevel that she's
looking for. And I think with the
styling, it's going to really help. Like
I keep saying,
>> this is what we're looking at after
using a round brush. I think that
they're super duper cute. [music]
I do want to go a little just a little
bit shorter in the middle just because I
don't want full curtain bangs. I am
wanting kind [music] of like a
voluminous situation.
>> Okay, they're styled now. And I'm going
to say something that might be
controversial, but they look exactly the
same. We could have done this in one
step. We're doing it in 15.
>> So, I'm just going to go ahead look
straight into the mirror and cut length
just like this. Now that they're styled,
as you can see, you you [music] know,
it's always best to start out longer
because once they're cut, they're cut.
I'm going to hold it here, texturize it
to [music] shorten it. I'm no longer
doing like straight passes with the
scissors because I don't want just
chopped lengths. For me, what it's
giving is like straight like chrono out
really straight across bangs, which is I
don't think what you're looking for. I
think you're looking for
nice like that. And I'm not going to go
over how again you can achieve that
because I think we get the point. But
let's just see how she finishes this
off.
>> Again, when you pull your sections out,
just make sure you are cutting into the
very center the most and losing length
there first and then you can graduate to
the [music] outer edges of the bang. Oh
my god. I feel like honestly, not to
toot my own horn, but I feel like I'm
elevating my haircut a lot right now.
>> All right, she keeps on going with the
point cutting, keeps on trimming, and
you know, it's you can see she's she's
going in there. They don't look bad.
They just look a little bit straight to
me. And the biggest thing I'm seeing
here is that it's very heavy at the
ends. If she elevates the section and
cuts layers into it, I think it would be
phenomenal for her. They would make the
ends a lot more wispy and like when you
push it off your face, they just kind of
sit perfectly. That's how you do that
with [music] good amount of layering and
texturizing within the bangs. We don't
want them all one length. Rarely do you
ever want to see bangs that are all one
length unless you're going for that just
extreme blunt Nicki Minaj look.
>> We typically don't want to see that. So,
mostly all professional bangs that are
done are layered.
>> Girl, I am loving them already. And I
feel like, oh, we could even go shorter
in the center, but I am not going to do
that. I [music] can save that for
another video if I decide. This like
volumized curtain bang is giving me a
lot of life. I'm just going [music] to
take the ends of my hair and curl them
under a little bit more. I'm living
laughing and loving right now. Okay, I'm
very happy. This was definitely [music]
the goal bang. And you know, if it goes
wrong, I don't have anybody to blame but
myself.
>> Okay, I mean, I shared my opinions. She
loves it. I'm happy for her. I think
they could be a little bit more diagonal
and wispy. It would just make a lot
easier for her to style that way. But
I'm happy she loves it. She looks
beautiful no matter what. [music] I
think the style does not look bad in any
way. But I would have personally done it
a little bit different. But to each
their own. You know what finish this
whole look off? If she put like an 8A
super gloss toner on her hair because
it's giving a little bit too bright for
her complexion. I don't mind it.
Bringing this hair color down a couple
levels would look fierce as on her. I
would be obsessed. And for that, I'm
going to have to give you a three on the
mondo meter. I wasn't really seeing eye
to eye.
>> This is the state of my hair now. It's
It's pretty nice. I like it, but uh it's
getting a bit too long for my taste. So,
now I'm going to give myself another DIY
chop. Thinking like somewhat French bob
style because I thinking about going so
short today. The approach is going to be
slightly different from my last DIY
haircut video. [screaming]
>> I'm excited, but I'm also really scared
for her because doing really short cuts
by yourself at home is [ __ ] impossible
to get right. These are precision
haircuts. These take major scale even
from a hairdresser to do right. If you
want some that's all the way up here,
you better know what you're doing or
else it's going to be really crazy
looking.
>> Right. So, this is this is the setup.
I'm in my bathroom. I am equipped with a
pair of scissors, hair clips to hold up
my hair, a bunch of hair ties in case I
need them. I will need them. That is the
plan. A bottle spray. So, the plan today
is to cut it quite short. And this is
the picture I'm kind of wanting to go
for.
>> She does have hair cutting scissors.
Amazing. I love to see it.
>> I don't know what it will turn out to
be. So, let's hope the end result looks
something akin to that.
>> Wo! This is going to be a big
transformation.
>> So, basically, I've kind of like tried
to gather up like [music] the nape
stuff. Going to grab a hair tie and just
tie that together.
>> We're only like 1 minute into the video
and I'm already confused. Why are we
tying the back up together? I'm not
really getting it, but hopefully she's
explaining it. I don't know if this is
the best way of doing this.
This is what it looks like. It's right
at the bottom of the nail.
>> Okay, we're doing three sections instead
of four quadrants. You know that I love
this this not as much but still liking
it because they are sectioning which is
really exciting to see. If you're
sectioning, you get a happy jump from
me.
To prevent mess, I tie a second band
down there so that [clears throat] you
know the hair doesn't scatter
everywhere. And I got to take it out in
one bunch. Clever, huh? Right. Okay. So,
[laughter] let's go.
>> Okay, we're chopping that off. Okay,
she's chopping a good amount off, maybe
like 2 in. Damn.
[cheering and screaming]
Okay, I see you. Now, what's going to
happen here is because we're
overdirecting the hair from here to
here, she's going to have an A-line bob.
You're going to have a very like
[snorts] slanted line going forward. Not
my thing, but some people's thing. There
was a time where that was super super
in. If it's your thing, go off, which is
not what she's going for. She's going
for a blunt bob.
>> All right. Okay. So, time to let her out
and see what I've done. What horror I've
inflicted.
Okay.
Right. OKAY. [clears throat]
[screaming]
OH, SHE seems confident about this. Very
much so. As still, which I saw the back
and I went, you saw what I did. I
literally am sitting here filming a
video, but you saw replay.
This is really short. It's above where
her hairline starts. So, she's going to
have to shave the underneath of her hair
to make this make more sense. [music]
And there is a little bit of
overdirection happening. So, she does
have a little bit of that A-line moment
going on in the back where it goes from
short here to longer on the sides.
Again, not my thing, but maybe hers. So,
now she's wetting the hair and trying to
get that line a little bit more
straight, which I think is a really good
idea. When she put the ponytail in, she
sort of lifted the hair up instead of
having it really smooth against the
neck. It's always going to add some kind
of layering and bevel on the bottom. If
you want it straight, wet the hair, push
it against the neck and cut. Don't lift
it at all. You're going to get layering
that way. The moment you elevate, you'll
get layers. All right. Now, she's just
trimming these B up. She's trying to get
rid of that A-line little moment going
on. And of course, we got a point cut
because what would a hairdresser react
cutting video be without point cutting?
Everybody loves it. Y'all are like the
biggest advocates for point cutting.
I've never seen anybody love it so much
than every DIY person out there. They
saw their hairdresser do it once and
they went, "Oh yeah, point cut that
bitch." I guess I'm here for it. I don't
I don't hate it. It's just that you
never do it right. She kind of just
keeps on going in this haircut and
cutting more off. That is what you don't
want to do. And guys, that's where you
start ending up with problems even as a
hairdresser. The more you cut, the
shorter it gets. Believe it or not, it
does get shorter every time you cut it.
Everybody has to learn the hard way.
She's basically letting one strand of
hair down at a time from each of these
side sections and then cutting it at the
same point she cut the back section. So,
using the back as her guide and then
repeating the haircut throughout to have
one straight line across, which is
totally a great way of doing it. I don't
mind this at all. I'm excited to see if
this actually works out for her or
something goes a miss. She's feeling
confident and she's feeling good. She
just turned around and I finally see
that it is okay looking. Um, I wouldn't
say it's great. I would say for her
hair, it is so thick to have it all one
length like that is going to always look
a little chunky at the bottom. It's
always going to kind of bevel out, but
most people want it to just sit straight
down. And the way you do that is with
proper layering on the ends of the hair.
Proper thinning, proper layering,
texturizing, whatever you want to call
it. That's how you make that [ __ ] stay
really flat without getting the whoop.
She just took down the front of her hair
and oh my god, she has so much hair
left. I honestly didn't think there was
going to be that much hair. That is a
full head of hair that's going to be
hard to cut through. She's doing some
horizontal sectioning in the front of
her hair, too, which I also think is a
great move. I think this is a very easy
DIY friendly way of doing this. And
she's going to again match it up with
the back section. Oh, it is so
satisfying watching her chop that hair
off. She's chopping off so much. And
she's just like fearless about it. She's
like
just boom, making that mad short. And I
love the bob on her. It is such a cute
look so far. Okay. The thing I don't
love is that the hair is drying in
between the cutting. If we were trying
to go for perfection, try and make sure
that that hair is sping wet. It should
be dripping. Okay? And that doesn't look
sping. Could you see that? Cuz she has
all this wave pattern going through her
hair now because she left her hair in a
clip and then she's not even getting the
wave pattern out before she cuts with
the water. That's going to cause issues
in a bob. And then when she does
straighten it for the first time, it's
going to be like jagged on the bottom.
Hate to see it. She's saying she's
checking the length on both sides, which
is amazing to do. Every time you cut a
new layer of hair, go like this and see
if your fingers slide off the hair at
the same time. That's how you check
evenness in a haircut.
>> [music]
>> Ah, the reason why I'm screaming is
because she's kind of taking the hair
and pulling it forward. That, my
friends, is putting layers into the
hair. All you got to do, I swear, just
wet that a lot. Comb it into place
against your skin. Cut it. Never
lifting. Okay, she's turned to the side
and I got to say, yikes. That looks
wavy. And not the wave pattern in her
hair, but the actual length looks
and I was cheering you on the whole time
[music] and now I don't feel as
confident at all as I did before cuz I
just saw this and that looks like a hot
mess.
>> Cutting your own hair is strangely
cathartic. [music] Gives you this sense
of control.
>> I love cutting my own hair. I don't love
it. I like it because I'm in control and
I know somebody's not going to chop my
hair off and I know my hair the best. It
is kind of like therapeutic and like I
don't know. You feel in control. It's
fun. I don't know. It's something that
everybody has to do once in their life,
you know. All right, I think we get the
point. She is continuing to take down
layers of hair and cutting it to the
same length over and over again. And
then she's checking it and trying to
make sure it's all even and everything.
And god damn, she has so much hair. She
just keeps going. Like I keep looking
over. Oh my god, this bob is going to be
so thick on the [music] ends because
we're barely adding any texture. It is
just Thank god her hair is really
straight naturally because this would
have been like poofed out on the ends if
she had any other hair texture. This
hair texture is iconic [music] for bobs.
I'll tell you that good Asian hair eats
with a bomb.
>> This is all the hair that I've cut out.
>> Look how much [ __ ] hair she cut off.
This is nice. I love a big
transformation, you guys. You know that
already. But like, oh god, that is so
much gorgeous hair just in that sink.
>> Yeah. I'm going to give this a blow dry
and see how it goes at the back cuz the
back's still looking a bit pokey. I want
to see if styling can just disguise it a
bit
or I always do it a little bit off to
the left. I hope this uh has given you
some inspiration um for your own DIY
haircut at home.
>> Guys, oh my god, you in the video. You
look so [ __ ] beautiful with that bob. I
can't believe how nice it sits without
barely doing anything to the [music]
ends to texturize them or thin them out.
It is like the perfect length for you
when your hair sits perfectly. Ah, this
is really really pretty and honestly to
the naked eye like I think it's perfect
to a hairdresser's trained eye. Would I
put a little more texture on the ends?
They sit a little nicer. Yes, for sure.
But you can also do it yourself. Lift
the hair up in sections. Boom. Like
that. And either use thinning shears or
point cut deeply into the hair. Let it
down. That way you have some nice
diffused texture going through and a
little bit less thickness and bulkiness
on the ends. Damn, you [ __ ] killed that.
That is going to be a solid five on the
mono meter. Make sure to check out new
hair reacts videos every single Sunday.
I'll be here waiting for you. Bye,
beautiful.
