You're very clever. But if not, you're going to learn a thing today. Several things, in fact. Now, take your seat, you statistically likely to be young man. And pay attention, because we are going to talk about the hidden origin story of Usopp's goggles that Oda cut from the manga, as well as Oda's accidental foreshadowing of Punk Hazard 12 years too early. why Han Chan was originally supposed to be a busty squid woman. And we also have a revelation regarding the 12 Supreme blades and more. Because we are covering each and every single SPS segment of the One Piece manga volumes in excruciating detail volume by volume, where I promise that no information will be omitted, no matter how redundant, irrelevant, or perverted. Today, featuring the utter madness that is the SPS of volume 13. I love going through these old volumes. They contain such a wealth of information. And on this occasion, that wealth, it is deposited straight into our mind banks before the SPS even begins. As volume 13 starts with something incredibly strange, which is an author's note featuring an actual photo of Etura Oda. There are very, very few actual pictures of Oda, and most of them come from scanned copies of old physical magazines from the '90s. But in actual One Piece, this oo is very unusual, and the reason why he did this will be revealed in the next volume. However, for now, his message is there is a sacred dragon in Enoshima, the being that is the closest to God. That is the dragon. I wonder if you can eat dragons. Now you started it. So this is in response to a recent slew of nefarious individuals hijacking the SPS which was started by the notorious Timmy. Timmy Aer is kind of like the joker of the situation who's gone and freed a bunch of inmates from Arkham Asylum. And in order to counter Timmy, there is now a group dedicated to destroying the SPS hijacking group. Although in order to do so, they themselves have hijacked the SPS. It's exactly like the Dark Knight. You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself hijack the SPS. Question: Are those glasses that Usopp wears when he fights? Oda, those are goggles. Sniper goggles. At first, he only wore them for looks, but in Log Town, he got the brand new model from North Blue. The scene on the right was supposed to be the first page of chapter 98 in volume 11. The number of pages went over the limit, so we scrapped it. The goggles have sunglasses on them to eliminate glare while aiming, and they can flip up and turn around and stuff like that, so Usopp really likes them. I do feel a bit bad for Usopp having his scene cut from chapter 98 because all of the other straw hats, they got their moments wandering around the log town. We saw Zoro getting a new sword with Shigi. And in this chapter, we see Sanji with the famous bluefinned elephant tuna. And we also see Nami buying a ton of clothes, and especially with how iconic Usopp's goggles went on to become. It definitely would have been good to show their origin. But this does highlight a problem that exists much more so today than back in the early days. I mean, yeah, back in early One Piece pages, uh, they were cut here and there, but the scope of the story, it was so much smaller. It was so much more narrow. So, this aside, you weren't really losing too much. But these days, a crazy amount of content is actually cut from the One Piece manga before we even see it. The amount of pages cut from Wano alone could probably fill a volume or two. There's so many little plot lines that Oda drew in the drafting stages, like the connection between Yamato and Fuga, one of the numbers. They had a whole side story going on that was almost completely cut. All that remains is the two of them acting friendly out of nowhere. But almost all of Odin's vassels had a lot of extra content as well. With Usup though, I will say he did get some justice because in episode 50, this is what we call a cannon filler episode featuring a girl named Carol buying the goggles just before Usopp in order to give her father as a birthday present. But then things happen and then something something speech about courage and Carol ends up giving the goggles to Usopp which you can also see start to happen in the One Piece live action as well because Carol is in a background shot wearing Usopp's goggles and you can assume that Usopp had this adventure to get his goggles off screen. But how it was supposed to happen is a bit different and it goes like this. Usopp. Hey lady, I like these goggles. Lady, you have good taste. They're the latest North Blue goggles. The Navy puts out a new model once a year. Same with this watch and this compass. Usopp. Oh yeah. Do you have any raw eggs? Lady, try a supermarket. Questions. So many questions that I need answered. I've been thinking of a worthy topic for five years now, and that topic is why is it that in battle manga the bottom half of people's clothes never get ruined? Oda, if they fought naked, wouldn't it be kind of distracting, right? This is not just an issue with battle manga. This is universal language. It's like that classic question of why the Hawk's pants don't rip. And look, I don't know enough about all of the comics to know if there's an actual explanation, like Tony Stark developing some sort of material strong enough to contain the Hulk's massive peen or whatever it is. And look, what I do know about it's not much, but it is One Piece. And what I do know about One Piece is that Roda's definition of pants has changed considerably over time, particularly when it comes to Gunko, as well as Nami, Robin, and Bonnie's outfits on Air Island. All of them look suspiciously like they're not wearing pants at all. However, Oda stated, and I quote, "It's a fashion where the hems of their jackets are extended. In fact, it reduces the amount of skin that's being exposed, so the outfits are totally fine." So, what you think you're seeing are panties, but you're not. What you're seeing is a stylish jacket, an extended crotchilla jacket. And it's actually even more conservative than just wearing regular pants. So, shame on you in particular for thinking otherwise. Also, Gonko's name literally means pants. Gonko is a specific kind of pants formerly worn by the Japanese army. So everything about her in particular, it just screams pants. So in conclusion, Etra Oda he has found a loophole in the battle manga rule of not removing the bottom half of people's clothing. And that rule is that he defines the bottom half as the top half. And since it's fine to remove the top half, mate, there is no issue. question in regards to Tashigi San who appears in volume 11. On page 119, she acts quite nearsighted, but when looking at the katana on page 132, she puts her glasses up on purpose. And on page 161, when she runs up late, she isn't wearing them at all. Are they just for show? Oda, it's not really for show. It's because she's slightly shortsighted. She can see things close up, but when they get further away, they start to get blurry. I think most likely. So, I do think that anyone who actually wears glasses will have noticed some uh some inconsistencies with Tashigiki's sight. Sometimes it's like she's almost completely blind without her glasses. And then other times they're purely cosmetic because she doesn't even wear them while she's fighting. So, Oda says that Tashigi is nearsighted, but that does change depending on the page that we're reading at the time. But I'd also like to take this opportunity to highlight the fact that Nami wears reading glasses whenever doing any important navigation or map work, which we first see in a color spread in color walk one. And we do see Nami wearing glasses sporadically throughout all of One Piece. Just not so much in the last 15 years or so because Nami hasn't really looked at, let alone drawn a map. Question. I think what Etra Oda means to say is that Pandaman doesn't have any lines yet. This could and should change. However, this is a fun fact buried deep deep within the ancient texts. And that fact is that Oda has actually voiced a One Piece character that is not Panderman. This incident occurred in the year of our Lord 2002. And something very cute that the One Piece movies used to do was have these little short fiveminute films of the Straw Hats doing something fun. And on this occasion, Dream Soccer King was created to accompany One Piece Movie 3. Another reason why these shorts were made was because back in the day, movies were only like 45 minutes long. So, just an extended episode, an extended episode that they sold tickets to. So, they had to pack something else in to justify charging full price tickets as well as often pairing them with other short movies from other series. But 2002 was also when Japan hosted the World Cup alongside South Korea. And so Dream Soccer King was created to celebrate and it features a penalty shootout between the Straw Hat and a team of at the time allstar villains. Allstar villains including Buggy Bonlay Django Hotchan and I suppose the biggest villain of all, Etra Oda himself, who interrupts the shootout, takes a pathetic shot on behalf of the villains and gives the Straw Hats an advantage that they used to win. Oda did a podcast with Inyaki Gooi for season 2 of the One Piece live action and I swear that they have either modified his voice in post because it's all deep and such that or oda has gone through the fabled second puberty. Question does the SPS corner stand for shiuonu sudu which means I'm taking questions. Huh? I forgot my question. Yuck it up. Oda that laugh is it along you know what what is this the sixth or seventh video I don't know in this series that I've done and I've not even explained what an SPS even is but the questioner is correct SPS stands for shitsum bshu and sudu so it's literally questions solicit for but more pragmatically it means I'm taking questions so that's what it means and to preface this next edition of question solicit for a reader sent in a drawing of a cat and the question is dear Oda sensei Why did you create the SPS corner? Oda, a cat. That's a cat. H. So, why did I create it? Well, when I read manga graphic novels years ago, a lot of authors used to put this sort of thing in their books because I enjoyed them so much. I decided that if I was a manga artist, I would put them in my books. That's why I made it. You know, if that's supposed to be a cat. So, I personally think that the SPS segment is one of the greatest things that has ever been done for the manga medium. And every series that is not taking advantage of it is losing out, which is most of them. It's like how OD uses the covers of his chapters to continue telling stories elsewhere in the world. Most mangaka use these covers to do some sort of cool art, which is fine, but it feels like a missed opportunity after seeing how Oda was able to use even the covers to expand his world. But mostly Oda simply cannot get over the fact that this is a cat. Question: Is Chan a taco yaki champion? Oda. That can't possibly be a cat. An octopus, maybe. Is it an octopus? And I do feel like Oda is being a bit harsh on the cat. I personally think it's a pretty damn good cat. But to the question, Han does of course go on to own and operate a Takoyaki stand, which is a slightly disturbing business venture. Because if you're unaware, Takoyaki is octopus. And if you're really unaware, Hotchan is also an octopus. So it's like the equivalent of me having a grilled human stand. M grilled human. But it's also been Hachan's dream to open up a takyaki stand ever since he was a child. So it's more like child me dreaming of opening up a grilled human stand. And also because we're talking about him. Did you know that was originally supposed to be a squid fish woman named Maple Reed? And she was also going to have eight arms instead of the six that Hartan ended up with, which would have ended up giving Maple a whopping 10 appendages, which I will say is very unotolike. The text also says that this Maple Reed was a master of countless sword styles and that if she did appear in the story, she would have been quite a formidable opponent. So maybe it's a good thing that Maple Reed didn't appear since Zoro did need a bit of an easy dub after being decimated by Mihawkier. But speaking of swords, question, what are the 21 Wazamono and Wazamono and all of that stuff? Also, what's this about Yubashiri having a blade with an irregular pattern? What does it all mean? I don't get it. So, this is a question about the blade ranking system in One Piece. And Oda goes into quite a lot of detail about them at this early stage. Oda, there are 21 supreme grade blades. This is Wadichimonji, which Zoro carries as a momento of Kina. The level is Wazamono, which means great blade. The make is white painted scabbard long sword, which is a type of outward appearance for swords. It also means that the scabbard is painted white and the blade is a straight edge. For swords, the levels go down from saiou or wazamono, which means supreme great blade, or wazamono, which means great great blade, rio wazamono, skill for grade, and just wazamono, which are grade blades, and they're normal swords, all of the normal swords. But a wazamono means that it is an excellent blade. So when they say 12 sai or wazamono, it means there are 12 blades in the world that are considered to be the very best. There's a bit more to this, but I do want to say that it has been 24 years since Oda revealed the sword grading system, and we have only revealed five of the Supreme Grade Blades. The obvious one is what we're all thinking of. It is Mihawk's Yoru, the black blade whose name means knight. However, unbeknownst to us at the time, we actually met a second with the introduction of Whitebeard. His Murakumogiri, literally meaning gathering clouds cutter, is another one of the 12, as is Goldie Rogers's Ace, the sword that he named his child after, not the other way around. And it means that these two clashes right here between Roger and Whitebeard are currently the only known times in the series that a Supreme Grade Blade has been used against another Supreme Grade Blade. And recently joining the roster was the revelation that Fujitora's Yakuza Kaisen was one of the 12, which makes sense for a man in his position. But I can't help but feel that there is a story as to how he acquired it. And the final of the 12 that we know of is the Shoai Kitatu currently being held by St. Ethan Baron Venus Duro of the five elder stars. And I do see the mistake get made quite a bit that Zoro has one of the 12. People tend to either conflate the Wad Ichimonji or Enma as being on the supreme level, but they're both one level down at the great great blades. And there's 21 of those, which is 21. It's the opposite of 12, you know. But atro he continues. There are basically two types of blades. Sugua or straight pattern and midba or wavy pattern. These terms describe the pattern on the blade that is created during the tempering process. There are various types of midareba as well. Question. Hello Oda sensei. This is confusing to me so please answer clearly. Is the stuff you draw on Sanji San's chin a beard or is it just a shadow? If it's a beard, please make him shave it off. Oda. It is a beard and I will not have him shave it. The SPS is over over. And not only does Sanji not shave anything, Sanji actually goes on to grow a beard. And I would like to think that Oda did this just despite that one person who dared to ask him that question at that one time. But that is all for the SPS of volume 13.
