It is an absolute privilege and an honor to serve here as the ambassador and to [music] be part of this remarkable team Australia. On behalf of our team, I would like to extend my best wishes to [music] his highness she Muhammad bin Zed, the president of the UAE, and to the leadership and the people of the UAE for your enduring friendship. [music] Tonight we present this video, the sands of time that will take us on a journey through 50 years of remarkable friendship. >> As the sands of time shift and settle, they reveal a story of vision, resilience, and enduring friendship. It began in 1975 when Australia and the United Arab Emirates [music] established diplomatic ties. The UAE was just 4 years old. A young nation with a bold dream and a future yet to be written. Australia [music] watched as his highness Shik Zed bin Sultan al- Nayan's vision transformed the desert into a thriving global hub. By the late 1990s, [music] our diplomatic presence grew stronger. The UAE opened its embassy in CRA in 1997. Australia followed in 1999, establishing its embassy in Abu Dhabi and later a consulate general in Dubai, laying the foundation for deeper cooperation across every sector, including defense and security. Our people-to-people ties have grown through the skies with Emirates and Etihad flying more than 1.5 million Australians through the UAE each year. Education has built bridges between our [music] nations. Three Australian universities and several Australian schools operate in the [music] UAE, nurturing the next generation of leaders. Thousands of Emirates have studied in Australia and more than 28,000 Australians live and work [music] in the UAE, contributing to sectors like education, finance, hospitality, [music] construction, and the arts. In 2025, our economic relationship reached new heights. The Australia UAE comprehensive economic partnership agreement came into force, eliminating tariffs on over [music] 99% of Australian exports and 100% of UAE exports into Australia. [music] It was Australia's first free trade agreement with a Middle Eastern country and the first to include a chapter on First Nations trade and investment. Today, the UAE is Australia's largest trade and investment partner in the Middle East. From ports and motorways to renewable energy and aggra business, UAE investors are helping shape Australia's future. Leaders and officials from both countries have met over the decades to deepen cooperation. [music] And in the past 18 months, this momentum has accelerated with visits by the Governor General, Deputy Prime Minister, Trade Minister, foreign minister and assistant foreign minister. In 2025, Prime Minister Anthony Albanesei met with [music] President, His Highness Shake Muhammad bin Zed al- Nayan. Together, they elevated our relationship to a strategic partnership and underscored the strong and enduring friendship [music] between our two countries. Our relationship is more than traditional diplomacy. [music] It's about people, culture, and shared experiences. Australia proudly [music] showcases its Aboriginal and toouristrate islander culture through traditional dance, music and storytelling. [music] Australia and the UAE are building bridges through sports and Australian sporting experts are helping launch grassroots programs in the UAE. These shared moments [music] remind us that this relationship is not just about governments or agreements, but also the connections we share. We pay tribute to all who have worked tirelessly to build this friendship leading to historic achievements.
