The Prophetic Blueprint: Guidance for Modern Living | Sidi Mohammad Alboni (Part 9)
Watch on YouTubeVideo summary
Upon arriving in Medina following the Hijra, Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) received a divine welcome from the Banu Najjar family and immediately addressed the community with themes of peace, charity, and night prayer as a path to Paradise. His humility was evident when he chose to live on the ground floor of a two-story house despite offers to move upstairs, a decision made by the Ansar to protect him from dust and water spills, even at the cost of their own bedding. This era was marked by significant challenges, including lingering tribal feuds between Aws and Khazraj, cultural friction between farmer Ansar and merchant Muhajirin, jealousy from Jewish tribes, economic struggles under Jewish control, and a local plague, all compounded by the rise of hypocrites led by Abdullah ibn Ubayy.
To unify this fragmented society within a single year, the Prophet implemented three transformative actions that serve as a blueprint for modern living. First, he prioritized the construction of the Masjid, personally carrying bricks and dusting his clothes to demonstrate that no one was exempt from labor regardless of wealth, an act that deeply moved companions like Umar ibn Al-Khattab. Second, he established brotherhood by pairing Muhajirin with Ansar families, exemplified by figures like Sa'd ibn Mu'adh who split their wealth and homes in half, and poor families who sacrificed their own needs to feed hungry guests. Third, he drafted the Constitution of Medina, which created a unified nation distinct from others, guaranteed freedom of religion for Jews alongside Muslims, mandated mutual defense against external enemies, and renamed Yathrib to "Medina" to foster a shared sense of belonging.
The Prophet's leadership extended to strategic economic planning and social cohesion, where he established the marketplace within Muslim neighborhoods rather than leaving it solely in Jewish-controlled areas and encouraged wealth redistribution through acts like donating public wells. He emphasized that societal success relied on meticulous planning and the collective hard work of all community members contributing their wealth, strength, or skills, rather than relying on miracles, with the exception of the disease leaving Medina. By naming the settlement "Medina" instead of using exclusive terms like "Darul Hijrah," he ensured that people of Yathrib, including the Jews, felt a sense of ownership and belonging, effectively transforming a collection of disparate groups into a cohesive society ready for future challenges like the Battle of Kubra.
Ultimately, the Prophet Muhammad serves as a tangible example for modern Muslims to emulate in building resilient societies through unity, sacrifice, and inclusive governance. His approach combined spiritual guidance with practical steps such as avoiding foods that might harm angels before communal prayers to show care for others' comfort, and defending companions against mockery to maintain social harmony. The first year of Hijra stands as a testament to how a leader can turn a fractured community into a unified nation through the power of shared purpose, mutual defense, and economic justice, providing a timeless model for addressing contemporary issues of division and inequality.

Alhamdulillah. Alhamdulillah. We
continue we continue our study of S. It
has been a while since we did some of
these sessions. Um, I was traveling and
alhamdulillah that Allah enabled uh me
to be able to be here today to continue
with this study to continue with this
best of studies with the life of the
beloved the life of the best creation to
get to know him more to get to increase
in love for him sallallahu alaihi
wasallam and get to increase in salawat
to him sallallahu alaihi wasallam.
Especially as we are approaching the
month of Rabia, this is the month of
joy, the month of happiness for all
Muslims and alhamdulillah that Allah
enabled us to continue to embark on this
journey and continue to embark
especially as we are approaching the
month of Rabia. So the last uh time
before we uh paused these classes, we
approached a significant milestone and
it was the event of Hijra from Mecca to
Medina. And we went through all of the
struggle, all of the the the effort and
the planning, the meticulous planning
that the beloved sallallahu alaihi
wasallam went through to make sure that
all of the Muslims are well taken care
of and they have now a really home and a
new stronghold for the Muslims
established in Medina. What a great
great milestone.
And subhan Allah, I was also reflecting
on my recent uh trip. Alhamdulillah, I
was able to travel. Uh it was a long
trip 30 37 hours of of of travel and
with the family of three toddlers three
very young kids it was quite challenging
but subhan Allah I was reflecting that
the beloved sallallahu alaihi wasallam
says
that travel is a piece of punishment and
I was like trying to make myself feel
better but then I reflected on the hijra
which we just studied before uh we
traveled and subhan allah And subhan
Allah how how easily we get immersed in
in in this life of of of leisure life of
easiness and then we start complaining
about small things that we face. Subhan
Allah. the the travel we might think
it's difficult but if we think about the
hijra and and we compare our travel to
his travel sallallahu alaihi wasallam he
took 10 days of travel going all like in
the heat of the desert climbing even
rough terrain to reach the the cave of
and to stay there for three nights to
say
and and they were traveling back going
on a different route not the the the
main route from Mecca to Medina Yeah.
And subhan Allah, all of the struggle
that they went through, even above all
of that, they had a bounty on each one
of their heads, 100 camel. That's a
fortune. You can think of how much that
added to their struggle. This is not a
normal travel. They are traveling,
escaping for their lives. Subhan Allah.
And now we think about our own travel.
We are flying in a in a secured airond
conditioned uh comfortable cabin with a
comfy seats um over 30,000 uh feet in
the air and you get served a hot meal.
You don't even have so reflecting on our
own own travel on our own struggle.
Subhan Allah that we call a struggle and
subhan Allah think about how would you
react? How would you react if you are
sitting in this uh seat for a long
flight and you have a toddler that is
crying next to you? How would you react
if someone was rude to you on that
flight or if someone didn't like the the
meal did not really meet those high
expectations? Maybe it was a bit more
spicy than what you are used to eat or
it's a bit salty. How would you react?
How would you react if there was a line
on on TSA and we see people not even
going through those traditional lines
they have to the BTSA check or the
global entry and have all of these
fanciness of these really like luxuries
of life how would we react let's not
reflect on others let's reflect on
ourselves first how would we react to
our travel and how we think and compare
that to the travel that he went through
sallallahu alaihi wasallam
and then Inshallah this would help you
to to to reflect and and andah change
your mindset when we go through struggle
during travel. And one might say well
they did not really have a lot of
technological advancements. Well
sallallahu alaihi wasallam he had the
bak don't forget about that. What kind
of a mood of transformation
transformation today transportation that
would even come even close to the bak
the bak would put his sight on a place
and he will be just right there and he
sallallahu alaihi wasallam is teaching
us we take the means and then we
struggle we don't go with the easy route
if he have prayed for Allahh to give him
the Allahh have certainly fulfilled his
command and fulfilled his dua his prayer
and he would have given him the bak but
subhan allah uh even even today you will
see find people that they can't afford
really the the the the airfare of a
ticket so they they take the bus or they
they go with a more struggle that what
we think is our own struggle. So subhan
Allah continue to reflect on on how many
blessings do we have and increase in
your and think and reflect and your
attitude inshallah will completely
change toward any struggle uh with
travel.
But anyway, alhamdulillah. So now the
beloved has sallallahu alaihi wasallam
has entered Medina. This is where we
stopped last time. Sallallahu alaihi
wasallam imagine that beauty and that
light now emerging from the entrance of
Medina with him. Sallallahu alaihi
wasallam wearing that beautiful white
garment that
brought to him and everyone just holding
that camel holding the reigns of that
camels wanting to host him sallallahu
alaihi wasallam and he says let it go
for it's commanded and the camel now
moving from one neighborhood to another
neighborhood and and finally reaching a
well-known
place a well-known area which is the
homes of of Ben Nar this is the maternal
relative ives of the the prophet
sallallahu alaihi wasallam from his
father's side when when when he was a
six-year-old he traveled with his mother
there and and and that's where a
familiar place to to him sallallahu
alaihi wasallam so that's where the
camel stopped and and in a way that's a
divine command in a way that Allah is is
choosing to honor the the ties of
kinship subhan allah so the camel
stopped and and the camel knelt and then
in that courtyard and people now is like
just in waiting to see what's going to
happen next. And then the camel stood
again, took another almost full 360
route and then it came back and sit in
that same exact spot. Subhan Allah.
That's a divine position, a divine uh
place for him to stop there. And the
beloved sallallahu alaihi wasallam
dismounted his camel and he gave the
firstbah in Medina, the first address to
the people of Medina. It's very very
very brief but filled with really
important teachings and important
lessons. He said of oh people spread
peace, maintain family ties, feed others
and pray at night while people are
asleep and you will be you will enter
paradise in in peace. Subhan Allah.
That's that's a recipe for for success.
That's a recipe for our entirety of
life. If you can just take these lessons
and uphold them, inshallah we are
guaranteed inshallah by the dua of the
beloved sallallahu alaihi wasallam and
his shaf and his his here promise that
we will enter paradise in peace
inshallah. But how many of us think
about those commandments and fulfill
them. So meanwhile there was one man
from Benu Najar who had went to the
camel while the beloved sallallahu
alaihi wasallam is giving that speech
and while while those events were
happening he went to the camel and he
took the belongings of the beloved
sallallahu alaihi wasallam and he rushed
home and he went back and he put the
belongings of the beloved sallallahu
alaihi wasallam in his house and we went
back to listen. When whenasam
when the beloved finished his his he
turned and he asked where are my
belongings and
he said they are at my home oh messenger
of Allah sallallahu alaihi wasallam. So
people started arguing and Muhammad
sallallahu alaihi wasallam he calmed
them in a way he is really admiring the
the initiative that
took so he said a person stays with
their belongings. [laughter] So there's
no argument there. I'm going to stay
with him. And subhan Allah, that's
that's the that showing like the
readiness and and the swiftness and
taking initiative and how important that
is to be of among those
to be among those who are will come
first. We have to be swift. We have to
be ready and we we have to rush for
goodness and take initiative and we'll
get the great reward as
took the the most beautiful reward of
the beloved sallallahu alaihi wasallam
living in his house for a period of
time. So the the house of Abu Yublan
sorry it was not a big house but it was
a twostory uh building. It consisted of
just basic two basic structure of two
rooms but they are on top of each other
and sah Muhammad sallallahu alaihi
wasallam stayed there until the
completion of the construction of the
masjid in Nebi uh his his masid in
Medina as well as the chambers that are
connected to the masid and in some
narrations they say it's one month in
another narration they say it's about se
seven month uh time that he stayed there
imagineah
imagine the beloved your beloved and
Allah's beloved is staying at your
house. What kind of [laughter]
what kind of what kind of a lifestyle
would you have? Subh what would what you
would change or what you would not
change? So um when when he sallallahu
alaihi wasallam he went there um they
like
and his wife they were pleading with him
to go upstairs but he sallallahu alaihi
wasallam he said like I'm a man who
would be receiving many visitors like
imagine now he's going to Medina there
are a lot of new Muslims who haven't
even met the beloved sallallahu alaihi
wasallam who maybe just seeing him for
the first time so many many of them
almost all of them they would want to go
and visit him and provide him with gifts
and and welcome w him and get to know
him and get to learn from him. So
suhammed sallallahu alaihi wasallam he
is acknowledging and and look at the
foresight he is acknowledging how much
struggle it will be for the family of
sorry if he would stay upstairs and
every time there's a visitor coming they
would have to prepare they would have to
open the door and welcome that visitor
and send him upstairs it will be um an
added effort and added struggle so
sallallahu alaihi wasallam instead
insisted that he will stay in the first
uh floor and that they will stay
upstairs
and subhan Allah like they they were
like really pushing hard. They were like
thinking and would say like I can't
think of a way how would I walk because
I'm walking on a room and the prophet
sallallahu alaihi wasallam is is living
underneath me like where would my
footsteps would fall. So they would try
to walk literally on the edges of that
room trying to walk into the places with
the least likelihood that the beloved
sallallahu alaihi wasallam will be
sitting that just to to avoid that kind
of a feeling that I'm stepping on a
place and the beloved sallallahu alaihi
wasallam is beneath me and subhan Allah
they went through the struggle
themselves in one night they describe
like his wife she she had a bucket of
water and accidents do happen so that
bucket bucket sp like it's it fell
and the water just spilled and it's not
like concrete building with like fixed
and strong structure. It was like made
of of leaves and and a structure where
water would leak. So they had only one
uh blanket that they will just put on
themselves when they are sleeping. So
they immediately just threw out that
blanket just to make sure that they can
take every single drop of water and
prevent any harm from reaching the
beloved sallallahu alaihi wasallam or
giving him the slightest disturbance.
Subhan Allah. Think of that love and
think of that respect that they had to
him sallallahu alaihi wasallam and just
trying to make him as comfortable as
they can possibly get him.
At a later time they actually they went
to him and they told him, "Oh messenger
of Allah, please we can no longer pair
with this." Even say no. He says like
I'm going to leave my home. I can't like
really live with that um like kind of
added uh overwhelming pressure. Please
just go upstairs. And he sallallahu
alaihi wasallam eventually went and
lived upstairs for almost half of the
time for the remaining time. And they
would send him food every time. And
think of the meal that you are preparing
and they are sending to the prophet
sallallahu alaihi wasallam. So they
prepare the best of the food and they
will send him the food and when the
foods come back they will trace and look
for the traces of his fingers and his
hands sallallahu alaihi wasallam and go
and eat from those spots seeking that
parakad seeking that added blessing.
Subhan Allah look at their way of
thinking like they will have maybe a
full plate they have a lot of food but
they will still go for that spot and
they will probably fight of who will
going to eat first from that spot.
On one occasion they prepared a meal for
him sallallahu alaihi wasallam. They
sent it and it came back untouched.
So imagine that you are the spouse that
you are the wife or the husband who is
making that meal preparing the food and
you give it to a guest and the guest is
not really touching that food. So how
would you feel? So they they they were
saddened and and they went and asked
him, "Oh messenger of Allah, did really
the food not really uh did you not like
the food or were there any issues with
the food?" So he sallallahu alaihi
wasallam he said it's good food but it
has garlic in it and I am a man who
converses with the angels and receive
revelations. I also meet the people so I
do not wish to harm the angels with the
smell of garlic. Subhan Allah. This is
an important teaching that we learn
about and we we should always try to
remember when we are coming to a
gatherings especially at the masjid try
to avoid if not avoid completely try to
eliminate or take the least amount of
garlic or or onions. the the the the
moment where we have that kind of
feeling the most is maybe in Ramadan
during prayer when there's a big crowd
and there are people on your right and
people on your left and you are
basically stuck and if you have like the
smell of garlic or the smell of the
spices or the smell of some of these
ingredients that are really um would
produce that kind of smell imagine how
much the the the wor the worshippers and
the prayers next to you are harmed.
harmed the same way this is how the
angels are harmed. Sallallahu alaihi
wasallam he say in a hadith that the
angels are harmed from whatever harms
the human being. So subhan Allah we
should reflect on that and try to avoid
if not avoid completely eat less garlic
especially when we go to a place of
worship or to the masjid.
So now we need to think about that first
events that happen after hijra. This is
the first year and there's this new
community that is forming
and now with the first year the focus
was on building that Medani community,
building that new uh Muslim community
and facing a lot of challenges.
So I want you to imagine Medina or
yesterday but it was called before
during this that time and I'll list a
number of difficult difficulties and a
number of challenges that the beloved
sallallahu alaihi wasallam had to deal
with and imagine how tough it would have
been for him. The first issue or the
first challenge is the lingering feud
between the and the Khazr. The and the
Khazr, the two main Arab tribes in in
Ythreb, they were in constant feuds and
in constant battles and and and they had
so much bloodshed between each other.
They were like filled with hatred to one
another. And the beloved sallallahu
alaihi wasallam in the in the first one
and the second one especially the first
one he commanded them to go and fix the
their their relations and and mend those
relations but you can't imagine that all
of it would go suddenly away so there
must be some lingering kind of feelings
or hatreds that is still fresh like the
wounds of the war is still fresh and
subhan Allah a pressing question now
will will arise like under the new
Islamic system who would have the upper
hand would it be the house the or the
khazr
this is the first challenge that the
beloved sallall alaihi wasallam had to
face the second challenge is now the
presence of the immigrants the muhajarin
this is subhan allah individuals who
have suffered a lot and sacrificed
everything and they immigrated from from
from Mecca they left their wealth they
left their home they left everything
behind and they have migrated to Medina
think about integrating this new massive
group into the existing society of
Medina and what challenges would that
come with? Subhan Allah. The the Ansars
and how would the Ansar who are the
residents of Medina, how would they
treat the the immigrants and the two
cultures are quite different. The and
the are primarily farmers and the
farmers life like the women they played
an active role in on the fields and they
often they would share decision making
responsibilities with their husbands.
On the other hand, subhah the muajarim,
the people of Mecca, they were mostly
merchants and the like subhah it's a
society where the husbands will take
sole responsibility of decision-m at
home. So you can imagine how over time
the the the women of the muhajarin the
women of the immigrants now are
observing how the the women of of the
the thesar they are like speaking and
they doing the mura and they are
speaking with their spouses and they are
coming up together sharing decision-m
responsibility and how that will change
in them. Subhan Allah. Any family that
immigrates, many of us are immigrants to
this country, in this land, you would
see a change in the family. You would
see a change in your spouse. You' see a
change in your children. This is a
challenge. This is a real challenge. How
would we react and how would we try to
to to to to hold everything together?
Um, subhan Allah, it was not easy. And
the third and it was a really big
challenge is the presence of the Jewish
the Jewish community or the Jews in
Medina.
Subhan Allah. Um the the the Jews in
Medina they regarded themselves to be
superior to the Muslims or to the people
of Yreb because they were a community
that they had divine scripture while the
Arabs they were idol worshippers. So
they will always look down on them. But
now suddenly the the the Arabs in in
they are also they are receiving divine
scripture and they can no longer have
that kind of superiority on on them. So
that they were really fueled with
jealousy and fueled with resentments
towards the beloved sallallahu alaihi
wasallam and towards Islam and and they
were subhan Allah they received vivid
description of him sallallahu alaihi
wasallam in his in their scripture. The
only piece of information that Allah
kept hidden is that he would not be sent
from the Jews. he will be sent from the
Arabs. So they had that huge expectation
that the last prophet the seal of the
prophets sallallahu alaihi wasallam will
be sent from them and he was sent from
the Arabs. So they had a lot of
resentments and and most of them they
did not submit and they did not uh
convert to Islam.
The next challenge now is the rise of
the hypocrites.
That's now a new faction that is emerged
in Medina. Before the Hijra, the
after they had their last and really
most severe battle, they have agreed to
appoint a person in the name of Abdullah
they they agreed to appoint him as a
king in an effort to unify the city and
stop their their fighting. However,
after the pledge uh of the second
especially the second pledge of the
pledged their allegiance to the beloved
sallallahu alaihi wasallam. So that
agreements with with Abdullah is is
completely dissolved. And now Islam is
is spreading in Medina. So so you can
imagine how Abdullah suddenly feeling
that all of the power that he was about
to take is all being taken from him
suddenly. So he also grew in resentment
and he grew in hate especially toward
the beloved sallallahu alaihi wasallam
and subhan Allah he formed the group of
hypocrites. Hypocrites the often they
are they arise when it's basically the
group that cannot open openly like
openly um oppose a stronger um power. So
they are weak but so they have that fake
allegiance. And subhan Allah he
instructed his followers he that that
they would attend congregational pray
prayer. So they will be in jama they
will be in namas they will be praying
with the muslims and they will praise
the beloved sallallahu alaihi wasallam
in public. They will pretend to honor
him and they would say in gathering oh
people this is the messenger of Allah
glorify and respect him. But when they
are alone when they are among themselves
they will start insulting the beloved
sallallahu alaihi wasallam. Abdah he
would say he would say like his example
and our example is like the example of a
one who feeds his dog and his dog would
attack him back. Look at that kind of an
ugly insult that he was make he was
making towards the beloved sallallahu
alaihi wasallam.
But we should make an important note
here that there is a great companion in
the name of Abdullahb Abdahbn
the son of Abdullah who is the head of
hyp the hypocrites
is a great companion and he went he's a
really steadfast companion and he is had
like his sincerity and he went through a
lot of struggle to to to give victory to
the beloved sallallahu alaihi wasallam
and subhan Allah look how he would have
his own struggles now his father is like
the head of hypocrites and he is seeing
his actions and he is trying to uphold
his faith and be close to the beloved
sallallahu alaihi wasallam. It's
definitely not an easy uh position to be
in. Subh
the last uh challenge that the beloved
sallallahu alaihi wasallam had to deal
with and the Muslims have to deal with
is the the the economy. The economy in
Medina it was dominated by the Jewish
tribes. The Jewish community, they had
dominance over all trade and commercial
market. The commercial market, it was
located in their within their
strongholds and they would control all
of the buying and the selling. Even the
main water wells, it was in their hands
and they had almost full control over
water and they will sell water to the
people of Ythre.
And subhan Allah there were even added
challenges like for example the diseases
that were in in inreb and there was like
known the plague of Medina that caused
many companions to fall ill when they
are arriving. And the beloved sallallahu
alaihi wasallam would make supplications
saying oh Allah make us love Medina as
much as we love Mecca or even more oh
Allah make it healthy and transfer its
plague outside of it. This shows how
many difficulties and how difficult the
situation was for the companions and for
the beloved sallallahu alaihi wasallam.
Imagine this fragmented society. How
would it rise? How would it rise in one
year now to be a a really strong and
unified society to face Qur and face uh
the the and and and
the and face them in in different
opportunities especially with the battle
of Per. So now the beloved sallallahu
alaihi wasallam he is the leader of
Medina and within one year he would take
three actions. These are the three three
main actions that we need to keep
remembering that really transform this
divided society into a unified and a
powerful one.
And now subhan Allah as I mentioned come
the second year the same society will go
in battle in the battle of and they
would in the battle of better and they
would win subh over the mushikim. um how
how is that possible with all of these
challenges? So in one year the beloved
sallallahu alaihi wasallam he developed
an economy he developed an army and he
built the the the masjid and that was
the first action that he took the
establishing of the the masjid in the
establishing of his masjid sallallahu
alaihi wasallam in Medina. And the
second action is is is the brotherhood
the mua between the thesar and and the
muhajarin. And the last one drafting the
constitution of Medina. One might say
like a constitution. This is over 1,400
years ago. Is this really a
constitution? Yes, it's a full
constitution. It was a document known as
Medina, the charter of Medina. It
consisted of 15 different articles
taking care of all aspects all of it
regulated all of the relationships of
Medina in inbound and outbound
internally and externally. It's really a
remarkable framework of governance.
Anywhere his who's up to politics, they
should really study this really vividly
and learn from the way the prophet
sallallahu alaihi wasallam was thinking
and how he brought all of this society
together and put together a constitution
that would ensure the coexistence of all
of these different groups of Muslims and
the Jews and the other groups. It's
really something amazing. Subhan Allah.
So the first action as I mentioned is
the building of the masjid and
sallallahu alaihi wasallam he
prioritized the construction of the
masjid as a place that will bring people
together. This is a way to unify people.
He commanded sallallahu alaihi wasallam
that everyone would participate in the
construction. Everyone alike the rich
the poor everyone alike. There will be
no wealthy person who would be allowed
to send someone on their behalf to do
the work. Everyone would have to go.
Even he sallallahu alaihi wasallam he
participated himself in the construction
of the masjid. He would carry the bricks
alongside everyone. It was narrated that
the dust covered his blessed beer and
covered his clothing as he works
sallallahu alaihi wasallam. So the next
time you visit the masjid and you are
leaning towards one of these beautiful
walls, think that this may be one of the
walls that the beloved sallallahu alaihi
wasallam constructed with his own hands.
like reflect on this as you are in in
visiting and staying at at at the masjid
knowh
and [gasps]
you can imagine the the the energy and
the enthusiasm of of the companions
seeing their leader is working as hard
as they are and everyone is building
this new establishments that will bring
them all together. So one of the
companions of the name of Smarbaser,
he should be very well known. He is the
the son of Ali Yaser who were the first
martyrs in Islam and they were killed in
in one of the very first people to be
killed for preserving just their faith.
And he was like had so much energy that
he would carry two stones instead of
one. And subhan Allah he he the beloved
sallallahu alaihi wasallam noticed him
and he would say everyone gets one
reward except for Omar he would get two
rewards subhah he's even increasing his
energy and people started reciting
poetry to motivate and encourage
everyone and subhan Allah there were
poetry that was said on that describing
how was working and that resulted in a
tough incident there was a wealthy
companion who was, you know, trying to
cautiously avoid getting uh his clothes
dirty. You know, when when you have this
new fancy clothes and you are like going
into a muddy field or some place with a
lot of dust, maybe you will be extra
careful. So you can imagine someone
having that attitude and another
companion a poet seeing the difference
between carrying the two stones and
brushing and working not really caring
about dust or caring about kind of
getting muddy and that other companions
a great companion still trying to
cautiously not avoiding getting um being
dusted up by the work. So he composed a
few line of poetry and he would say
He says those who build the mosques
tirelessly standing and sitting, they
are not equal with those who shy away
from dust. Andy said he liked the
rhythm. It has a really beautiful rhythm
in Arabic when he recited it. And he
didn't really see and witness the
behavior of of the other uh companion.
He was just busy doing the work. So he
was he didn't know that it was made in
comparison. So he would repeatedly go
and recite these lines and he would go
up and down. He would be reciting and
saying
he would go up and down and he would be
reciting the the the verses of of these
poetry. And slowly but surely the other
companion he started to really grow
annoyed until he couldn't really be bear
it anymore. So he grabbed a stick and he
approached Namar and he said to him,
"Listen, oh son of Sumeya, his mother,
the the the one of the first martyrs in
Islam. He he called him by this name. Oh
son of Sumeya, if you don't stop
repeating those lines, I'm going to
strike you on your face between your
eyes and your nose." And this has
happened in front of everyone even in
front of the prophet sallallahu alaihi
wasallam in front of the beloved. And he
sallallahu alaihi wasallam he
immediately came and he said do you not
know that Omar is so dear to me that he
is between my eyes and my nose. Subhan
Allah. As if he is saying like if you
will strike him as if as if you are
striking me sallallahu alaihi wasallam.
Look how much care he had for for those
who suffered the most. And he's like
showing them how much struggle the muhaj
and the immigrants they went through.
And Omar he's hearing those words he
start to weep and he start to cry tears
out of joy seeing the care for for the
beloved sallallahu alaihi wasallam
towards him. Subhanik he just can't call
him son of Sumeya. Subhan Allah. It's a
message to the prophet sallallahu alaihi
wasallam reminding everyone of the
sacrifices. Take care of them. Take care
of the majarin. They endured so much and
they sacrificed so much for the sake of
Allah. Don't treat them like that. And
subhan Allah nothing like this would
happen again after after them witnessing
such an event and subhan
[sighs and gasps] Allah we reflect on
the event of building the masjid and the
purpose of the masjid that it should be
the purpose that it's the masjid and we
compare to the state of our mass
massages nowadays subhan allah the
masjids nowadays it lost an important
role it's the it's surely the the place
for worship the place of
like prayer and there were in Many
massages there's a lot of activi
activities like Sunday school and Quran
programs and this and that and lectures
but the massagids are the central place
they are the the the place that all of
the Muslims should come together to
debate important issues to talk about
challenges they face and they think of
solutions. This is one very important
role for the masjid that we miss today.
We see Muslims arguing and debating on
social media while the masjid is a much
more appropriate place for those
important decision-m think of the
barakan think of the angels that
surrounds these places and these
messages and how much that will play an
important role in coming up with the
right decision with Allah's guidance and
Allah's inshallah mercy. So we are
really really missing out on on these um
opportunities with the way the massages
are operated unfortunately in our day
and time.
The second important action as I
mentioned that the beloved sallallahu
alaihi wasallam took in Medina is the
mua establishing brotherhood between the
immigrants who are coming the muajarene
from Mecca and the Ansar the people of
Yre.
And other than the challenges with the
difference of culture there were other
challenges around housing and
sustenance. Where would you house this
massive flood of immigrants?
um how would you [clears throat] get
them food and drink and and money until
they can really establish themselves?
So sallallahu alaihi wasallam he
established the bond of brotherhood
between the majar and the and he himself
sallallahu alaihi wasallam he would bear
people from he will bear one from the
muajar with one from the thesar he
bebsari
was
he
subhah this is an amazing teaching When
we study the s of the beloved sallallahu
alaihi wasallam, we seek to emulate him.
We seek to take lessons and apply these
lessons. We should really compare
ourselves to the companions. There will
be immigrants and there will be refugees
that will come to our communities quite
often. Subhan Allah. Because of so many
events are happening in different
countries as we know. So how are we
treating those immigrants? How are we
treating those refugees? Subhan Allah.
Look at Saabia.
He's a native of Medina and he's a
well-known merchant. Meanwhile, Sa he's
also a prominent merchant in from from
Mecca. So, Subhan Allah,
he he like brought him to his house and
he say, "Oh, my brother, this is my
house. We shall divide it in half and
this is my wealth and we should divide
it in half." This is not just a
statement. This is action. They
literally divided everything in half
between themselves and and their their
brothers. So Abd being the smart and
really beautiful Martian that he is he
said just guide me towards the market.
So he went there and he had some camel
robes that he brought with him from
Mecca and he bought those and he earned
some just small amount of money and you
can think of it a seed fund an angel
fund in our today's terms. Uh and within
a few days he went to the prophet
sallallahu alaihi wasallam inviting him
to his wedding. So the beloved
sallallahu alaihi wasallam he was amazed
and he was like looking at him like are
you how are you getting married and he
said um I found a woman from the I
proposed and she accepted and he told
him the story and he sallallahu alaihi
wasallam he asked him what did you give
her as a m as a dy and he responded I
gave her the weight of a date seed of in
gold. Subhan Allah. Imagine the the hard
work that he went through just being
really a brilliant merchant.
But again, we compare that ourselves.
This is not an easy matter. Now a day
really truly someone would go above and
beyond and they would go out of their
way to host someone at their home. Maybe
they will give them a place in their
garage to sleep in or maybe they will
give them a room for a few nights. And
now few days will pass and then you can
think how their attitude will change
toward that person who is in need of
shelter. They might start like saying
hurtful words towards them. Subhan
Allah. It was narrated that the the
thesar would say the the the muajeri
brother the immigrants would come to me
and they will put their hand in my
pocket and they will take some amount of
money. Now this amount of money that
they take is more beloved to me that
anything that is left behind, anything
that is remaining. This is how much they
were happy that they are sharing all of
the the their the blessing that they had
with the people of need and they are
making sure that they get established
and they are getting taken care of.
Subhan Allah.
And we learn of a story subhan Allah um
of of the the Ansar where they came to
the beloved sallallahu alaihi wasallam
and they said we want to divide our
farms between us and the muajarin but
remember the muhajarin they are not
farmers they don't really have that
skill so the beloved sallallahu alaihi
wasallam appreciated that proposal but
said no no no let's keep you keep your
farm so they told him okay that's fine
we'll keep the farm but we will divide
all of the brutus between us and the
immigrants basically We will still do
all of the hard work. We will not gain
any support from the from the immigrants
from the muhajarin. And still at the end
of the the season, we will split all of
the brutus, all of the outcomes of that
season between us and the muajarin.
Think of that subhan Allah that
sacrifice that they are making. It's not
really easy. It's not just a statement
that we say. And one time in one story
on on in one narration that one of the
mahajarin came to the beloved sallallahu
alaihi wasallam and came they were
praying is at the masjid. This is after
the establishment of the masjid and he
he was a man from the muajar and he came
to the beloved sallallahu alaihi
wasallam and he was telling him oh
messenger of Allah I'm exhausted.
Basically he reached a level of hunger
that really overcome him and and he was
a really a point of severe uh fatigue
that he cannot really be able to to to
have that energy to move. So sallallahu
alaihi wasallam he turned to the
gathering that they were sitting there
after that the prayer after the
congregation he said who will host this
man. So a man from the Ansar who was
actually poor volunteered to take him in
though he did not really like no one
knew of his poverty, no one knew of his
conditions. So they brought the guest
home and they only had food s sufficient
for themselves and for for their
children. So what they did is really
really really amazing. The husband told
the wife keep the children busy. try
basically distract them with any kind
kind of distraction until they fall
asleep and let's prepare the food
whatever food we have and let's dim the
lights. Let's distinguish that lamp and
we make sounds uh with our plates as if
we are eating and we and as if we are
eating and we give all of the food that
we have to to to this person who is who
is to the guest basically at their
homes. And indeed they did that. They
they were able to put the children to
sleep. They prepared the the food and
the and the couple they pretended to be
eating. They dimmed the lights and the
guest ate his fullest and he was not
even aware of that situation. And subhan
Allah they kept the story to themselves.
The story ended there. They did not go
the next day and start bragging or they
they put that on on on on their social
media feed. Subhan Allah. They kept it
to themselves. But Allah subhana wa
ta'ala wanted that story to be well
known until the day of judgment. wanted
to know that their sacrifices will be
will be really until eternity recited in
the Quran and and people will know about
it. So there was a verse in the Quran
that was revealed about that event and
Allahh is saying in in in in the Quran
those who love people who immigrates to
them. They would give the immigrants
preference over themselves even though
they they were in need.
They were really in need but they give
preference to the to the guest to the
immigrants over themselves. And subhan
Allah the next morning they immediately
next morning during the f pray prayer um
the they came the host came and the
beloved sallallahu alaihi wasallam was
smiling to him. Imagine that you are
doing an action that will make the face
of the beloved sallallahu alaihi
wasallam smile. Imagine what a great
feeling that he felt just seeing the
smile of the beloved sallallahu alaihi
wasallam. And he told him, "Allah who
was amazed by what you have both what
what both of you have done last night."
And subhan Allah, this this verse is
really um like putting this really great
sacrifice into a lesson that all of us,
every single Muslim should learn from.
May Allah grant us this ability to reach
this such high level of really
selfishness. the Ansar were truly an
exemplary model for that and we should
reflect on the the thesar and learn from
them and try to to take some of these
lessons and apply them in practice.
The third and the last um action and
this is probably where we will stop
today. Maybe we'll continue a bit more.
We'll see inshallah. Um which is around
the charter of Medina. Now we turn into
this important documents. This
establishment of the set of rules, the
laws that that that unify this divided
community um this divided society in a
really extraordinary way. And as I
mentioned there were 15 different uh
articles but we'll talk we'll mention
about four important clauses.
The beloved sallallahu alaihi wasallam
he said the Muslims in Medina in one
clause the Muslims in Medina are one
united nation. They are distinct from
all other people. So basically the
muhajarin the thesar the immigrants and
the and the and the Muslims coming from
any tribe they are one unity. That's
mean this is really all of them are
equal. There's no first first uh class
citizen. There's no secondass citizen.
Every everyone is is equal. And whoever
will come to them from Mecca or or from
Medina or any parts of it is also from
that one nation that is distinct from
others.
Another important clause that the Jews
in Medina are also one nation alongside
the believers. Subhan Allah. This is
recognizing that u this is basically
recognizing the freedom of religion that
that these
group of people that the Jewish people
they can continue to preserve their
faith and and and until they they they
respect this society and they respect
these regulations and they don't really
harm us they they have their faith we
have our faith and we live um in in
harmony. Subhan Allah. before any any
first amendment or second amendment as
we are like the people feel proud about
these amendments and the US constitution
it's a great document think about this
document more than 1400 years ago and
the beloved sallallahu alaihi wasallam
how genius he is putting those clauses
and then he would say in another clause
a very important clause that again
Muslims would have their own religions
and Jews will have their own religions
again this is again as I mentioned
establishing that freedom of of belief
the the the Last one that I'll talk
about that everyone living under this
society in this new community they
should come to aid. They should come to
defend one another from any external
enemies that might attack Medina. So now
we all live in one homeland and we all
defend that homeland. No matter what's
our background, what's our faith, we all
come to the aid of one another if you
are under under fighting and under
battle. And this is again showing us
subhan Allah how he sallallahu alaihi
wasallam thinking strategically about
how with a society that is so fragmented
filled with hatred now will become just
a unity as a one body and one soul and
they will be capable to to to to fight
back and they will able to be winning
battles as we will learn inshallah in
the near future.
And he [sighs] did one thing uh other
than the constitution that he sallallahu
alaihi wasallam changed the name of Yre.
Now he gave gave the the the city the
name of Medina. Medina is the city.
Subhan Allah. Like this is really really
brilliant move. He created a sense of
belonging to everyone who is living
there. If he had called it and kept it
as as Ythreb the the the muhajarin the
immigrants would not have that sense of
belonging. This is the the the home of
the people of Ythre. If he had called it
Darl Hijra the the the house of the
immigrants the the the the people of Yre
would not feel that sense of belonging
and the Jews would not even feel
belonging either way. So he called it
the city the the Medina and now by
giving it this name it included
everyone. It encompassed everyone there
including the Jews and everyone feeling
that inclusion and feeling that sense of
ownership to the success of this project
to the success of this community. Subhan
Allah.
And [sighs] now regarding the the
economic uh situation sallallahu alaihi
wasallam he ordered the establishments
of the marketplace in Medina that it
will be established among the houses of
the Muslims the houses of the people of
Yreb rather than it's ex exclusively in
the areas that is controlled by the the
the Jewish community and he sallallahu
alaihi wasallam he went there and he
established and he drew the boundary of
the marketplace and says this is the
marketplace and this is where we should
trade and we hear stories of companions
like
a really great wealthy companion who
would go and start purchasing those
wells and and just putting it for for
the benefit of the Muslims that they can
drink as much as they want. He paid a
thousand gold in dirhams that's a
fortune just to purchase the well of
Rome. Subhan Allah. And and and he
donated it all the way to the Muslims
that they can have water. And subhan
Allah say Muhammad sallallahu alaihi
wasallam will see his his reactions and
he and he will just really amazed by the
sacrifices that say
is is doing with his wealth. Everyone
has a part to play. Those who have
wealth they should contribute with their
wealth or those who have the strength
they should contribute with their
strengths. Those who have the the the
the intellectual ability or the skill
everyone is responsible. We are like the
Muslims in Medina. We all building a
society. We are establishing a society
in the US. We should all take part and
and really work hard to to to make this
project a successful project.
And the final [sighs]
uh subhah challenge as I mentioned the
health condition as I mentioned the
beloved sallallahu alaihi wasallam would
pray and he would would ask Allah to
purify the the the the air in in Medina
and will take the disease of Medina
outside of Medina.
And now a question as we are wrapping up
all of these challenges and the actions
that the beloved sallallahu alaihi
wasallam took. One question like one
might ask like where is where where is
the the the revelation? Subhan Allah. Uh
like uh where are the miracles?
Like is there anything miraculous
happening? Like no all of this is
[clears throat] really meticulous
planning and careful planning and hard
work there. None of this is miracles.
Maybe the the the diseases taking the
dis diseases out of Medinas, this is
truly a miracle. But everything else,
all the challenges that the beloved
sallallahu alaihi wasallam had to face
and the companions they had to face,
it's all through hard work. And Allahh
says in the Quran
indeed in in the messenger of Allah
sallallahu alaihi wasallam, you have a
great example. Allahh will not say this
in the Quran for us just to recite and
and and move over. He is truly an
example. He is truly someone that we are
capable of following that we are capable
of imitating. Don't say oh these are the
the companions and and he is the prophet
sallallahu alaihi wasallam as if they
are from a different planet. We are
capable of following on their footsteps
and and and following on their example.
Subhan Allah.
So these were the events uh that took
place in the first year uh in the hijra
and subhan Allah the second year u is
what the preparation for the great
battle of of
kubra so inshallah is approaching so I
think it's it's maybe a good uh time to
stop here to give people who want to to
prepare for prayer want to make
inshallah continue and then uh we
continue next week inshallah with the
events that took there and how the
Muslims that that great great great
great victory that they had on that
battle and the struggle that they went
through even to to to get to that
victory. So inshallah we conclude with a
short dua.
Muhammad sallallahu alaihi wasallam.
Muhammad.
