The Most Magnificent G1 Transformer Ever - 1986 Sky Lynx

The feature bot in this video is the magnificent 1986 Transformers Generation 1, Skylinks. Now, Skylinks hitting the toy shelves in 1986 meant that he arrived just in time to appear in the animated series. And what an appearance he made. He kicked off season 3 and became quite a fan favorite character thanks to his arrogance, his ego, and his attitude. >> We just might get out of this one yet. Skylinks, >> save your ammunition. AUTOBOTS, SUPERIOR FORCES ARE TAKING OVER. WELL, WELL, Commander Modesty's here. As long as he delivers, I don't care about his ego. >> Skylinks was so popular that he pretty much became a main character throughout the entirety of season 3. Now, in Marvel Comics, Skylinks was treated a little differently. He made his first appearance at issue number 36 where it was shown that he is a friend of Wheeljack who was called in to rescue some human children that had accidentally got themselves involved with the Autobots. From that Skylinks kind of had a rough road. He rescued the human children and then he got kidnapped by this cosmic carnival and had to perform for them until he was rescued by Optimus Prime. After he was rescued by Optimus, he ended up getting captured by the Mechanibals and had to be rescued by Landmine and Cloudburst. And after that rescue, Skylinks has had enough and we never saw him again in Marvel comics. So, real quick about this figure here in my possession. This is actually the 2007 Encore release, which is exactly like the original 1986 release, except for a couple differences. One of them being the painted in blaster right there. And the Lyn's eyes, they're painted as well. Also, this figure has been enhanced thanks to some Toy Hacks decals. I've had this figure for quite some time, I've been wanting to review him, but every time I pull him off the shelf to film this, I realize how bad of a shape his decals were. So, I ordered this upgrade set that really improves the look looks of him, and I really cannot wait to show this off. So, enough of me rambling about Sky Links. Let him Let's get him here on the table and check him out. Yes, he transforms into two different vehicles. We have the space shuttle and then a crawler transport. So, let's go ahead and take a look at the space shuttle first, which looks amazing. These new decals from Toy Hacks absolutely make the shuttle pop. Originally, he just had gold decals along the side, up here on the tail fin, and the big Ottaba insignas on the wings. But, as you can see, Toy Hacks really added a brand new look to the shuttle mode with the new gold decals, the blue stripes on the wings, new Autobot insignia right there on the nose cone, and there's new decals for the cockpit. They were originally a gold chrome, but now they're gold with a little bit of black highlights. Now, there was an option where you could give him red decals for the cockpit, which is an homage to the Marvel Comics look, but I like the gold. So, anyway, taking a look at the shuttle. Love this. It's really big and quite impressive. Lots of detail all over. Lots of sculpted detail as well. Let's see. You got the original rub symbol right there that I noticed the other day did work, but my office is a little cold right now, so may Oh, there it is. You can see the Autobot symbol popping through slightly. On the back, he does have multiple thrusters, no wheels unfortunately, and you can see the bird legs underneath. There is a opening cargo bay. So, you open this section right here, revealing this awesome looking gold chrome something. I don't not sure what that is. New gold or excuse me, new decals right there inside the cargo bay. And I forgot to show off. There are new decals that go on the side of the shuttle that say magnificent magnificence and NASA. Man, I can't talk. You have multiple options to choose from. There's also decals here on the end. You have a danger blast area, NASA, and right here is if I can get to focus in a Skylinks insignia. So, all in all, that is a great looking shuttle. So, now let's bring in the crawler, which gets most of the Toy Hacks decals. I mean, the original crawler, all he had was the red here on top. He had four red stripes and some gold there on the sides that we'll see here after a while, but Toyax just blew it out of the water with this right here. New decals on the front which make it looks look like a gang plank of some sort. You can see the railings and windows to really let you know how huge this thing is. Let's see. On the top, we have multiple red decals. New decals here on the red sections. Decals here on the white. On the front again, let's see. Oh, on the sides, we got these new red decals that say Ford port actuator and then a rear port actuator. New decals that make it look like there are treads. If you see those underneath there on the back, looks like you got thrusters, a control panel, more thrusters back here on the back section. There's lights here on the back on the top. There's a light right there. Big number six or number nine, depends on how you look at it. So, yeah, the crawler, it looks awesome. Now, so the big feature with the crawler is it is motorized. So underneath you've got a switch right here. You see it says walk or roll. When it's in crawler mode, make sure you move this switch to roll. And you got a little wheel section here that you manually control. So you put it straight forward like so. The crawler will roll forward. If you turn it, you know, at an angle, the crawler will do circles. And there's the wheels for the crawler right there. There is tread on them so they will catch whatever surface they're on so they roll around. And you got the onoff switch right there. Crawler takes two aoublea batteries. So let's get this thing rolling. Go ahead and turn him on. And it's loud. And so there he goes. He just rolls right across the table. So, another feature with the crawler and the shuttle is they can combine. You have ports underneath here. You got one, two, three that line up with three pegs on top of the crawler. And this combination is what you see mainly how Skylinks is portrayed in the media with the crawler attached to the bottom. Let me get this camera up a little bit. So, we've got the shuttle attached to the crawler. Let's go ahead and turn that on once again. And there we go. The crawler is crawling and taking Skylinks wherever he needs to go. Well, I guess the whole thing Skyinks, but yeah, that's really cool. And you know, you can pretend Skyinks is flying around with the cargo crawler attached to the bottom. So, now let's get into transformation. And we're going to start with the shuttle once again first. Pretty easy transformation. And the first thing you're going to do is take the front end and you're actually going to pull it straight out like so, revealing this long neck. And then kind of angle down here. There's a panel here you can flip around. And this is kind of hard to manipulate, but there we go. Then what we're going to do is take the thruster section, pull it out and around. Take the tail fin, and you're going to pull this long tail out. Now, with the tail, you see there's there's a little track right here. You want bring this up and around the track. And then you're gonna clip this section over this section right here. Sometimes it can be a pain, but you'll hear that click. It locks in. Go ahead and take these thrusters. Push them back into place. Underneath here, you got these legs that I showed off earlier. Bring those down and bring the blue sections out forming wings. I hope I can get him all in camera. There we go. But there is Skylinks in his giant bird mode. Kind of hard to get him to stand. He's got skinny little legs. See if I can get him all in frame. But yeah, this is a massive figure once you get him all expanded. You can open his mouth just like so, revealing a blaster here on the inside. I talked about this earlier. The original G1, that blaster was red. the same color as inside his mouth. This Encore Edition, the blaster is black, and I absolutely love that. I do wish, my one complaint with Skylinks is I wish the mouth would open a lot wider. It just depends on how you get them angled on the little head joint, but that's about it. There is new toy hacks decals inside this section right here. here if I can get to focus in. That makes it look like there are mini guns inside this neck neck flap. Now, I always face these forward before cuz those little pegs right there kind of looked like uh blasters, but now he actually has mini guns right there. And that is awesome. And I just realized something. I wonder if those are blast effect compatible. So, I've got a blast effect right here. Let's see. Yeah, it's it's loose. I guess you could make it work if you wanted to, but oh well. So, let's see. Any more articulation with Skylinks? The neck is really articulated. You can move it around. You got this little flap right here that will move up so you can kind of make the head look all the way up if you'd like. You can bring it straight forward. The legs can move forward and back. There is an ankle tilt. There are new decals on the claws if you make those out. Right there. chrome decals. I dig that. And the tail is very well articulated as well. So, yeah, lots of articulation for this big old bird. I love the looks of this thing. So, now let's bring in the crawler and we'll get it transformed. Transformation for him is super simple. You're going to bring the legs down until you hear a click. So, bring them down. Hear a click. Do that for all four. Now, with that click, what that does, it's locking these legs in place for walking mode. To transform Skylinks back to the crawler mode, each leg has a little red button on the side. You must depress that red button in, which will unlock the leg so you can move it back to where it goes. And of course, then you just move it back to lock it back down in place for V uh creature mode. But there are so many Skylinks you find on the secondary market that are broke because little Timmy didn't hit that button and just broke the figure when he moved the legs up. Anyway, completing the transformation, you're going to bring these blue section down for the feet. Do that on all the sides here. On the back, you're going to extend these till they come out all the way. They kind of like double tails. And then here on the front, you're going to flip out the beast head and rotate around. And there's Skylinks's crawler in beast mode or Lynx mode, if you will. Now, in the cartoon, they portrayed Skylinks. His personality carried over into both modes. You had the bird. If these two separated, the bird and the Lynx would work together, sharing the same mind. Now, Marvel Comics, Skylinks was a triple changer. He transformed from the shuttle to the bird to this thing. So, taking a look at the links, thanks to those great toy hacks decals, we've got new eye decals right there that are covering up already blue painted eyes, but I like the extra added detail in those. And probably my favorite decal in this entire set is the decal that gives the Lynx a mouth. You see the black and the teeth right there. The original did not have any decals right there. You just kind of use your imagination. That makes him look a lot more vicious. Now, I did keep the original Autobot decal on his forehead because it was gold lined. The ones the Toyax set came with had the white outline, but they look really good on the shoulders right there. You also have new decals here inside the legs, and that's on all four. Little red decals here on the uh hips. Gold decals here on the side. And got another one here on this side. And underneath here on the battery compartment. I like this. You got a little Autobot insignia and a battery symbol. And what's cool is Toy Hacks actually put a decal on the inside of the battery compartment. Let me get this opened up again. If you open this up, you can see that's now a ramp. See an entrance right there. So, if he's in his beast mode and he's parked right there, you can pretend some micro masters are rolling in to go inside of the links mode to be carried off into space for some adventures. So, I think that's really slick. Now, it's too bad back in the day that you didn't have the option to carry smaller transformers, but since this guy is full of a lot of electronics, that's why they didn't do it. So, let's get him uh moving. What you're going to do is take this switch and move it to walk. And that's going to enable these legs to turn. Once again, safety for your figure. Make sure walk is when he's in beast mode. Roll is when he is in crawler mode. So, let's go ahead and turn this on. And check him out. There he goes. Not very fast, but he's effective and pretty damn loud. I love it. I love watching these 80s toys work. All right, let's turn this off and then we'll get into his final mode most everybody is familiar with with Skylinks. We're going to take the head. Go ahead and collapse that back down. And for me, I always push the double tails back in. Oh yeah, new decals on the tails as well. So push those all the way in. So you've got that going on. Now you're going to take Skylinks himself and for him you're just going to take the bird legs, flip these up, and those are going to lock into place. And the same thing that we did attaching the shuttle to the crawler. You're doing the three holes to the three pegs, locking these in. And oh my gosh, he's not going to fit in camera. All right, so there we go. There is Skylinks in his combined mode. and he is absolutely glorious or magnificent. Let's get him turned on and have him walking across the screen here so you can check this out. So yeah, there you go. How gloriously 80s is this? And now for some quick size comparisons. Here's 1986's Transformers Generation 1 Skylinks with generation 1 Rodmus Prime. Generation 1 Springer, Generation One Cup, and for a modern figure comparison, Transformers Studio Series Hot Rod. 1986's Transformers Generation 1 Sky Links is an outstanding and iconic Transformers toy. If you can find one in good shape, man, this figure belongs in your collection. But as I said, be warned when looking for a Skylinks. You can usually find the bird section, the shuttle section in fairly decent shape. But it's finding the crawler 100% complete that can be a challenge. But you do have options. You have the vintage G1 or the Encore like I have. And I have to give a huge shout out to Toy Hacks for this fantastic upgrade set. Man, did you make this figure look amazing.
