Video summary

The video features a detailed reaction and analysis of the horror film *Obsession*, which has rapidly evolved from an underdog indie project to the top-grossing original horror movie of the 2020s. The host, who waited until the film's cultural momentum peaked before reviewing it, notes that public opinion has swung from enthusiastic recommendation to claims that the movie is overhyped and merely a "mid" film. Directed by YouTuber Curry Barker, the movie centers on two main characters whose relationship deteriorates as one character becomes increasingly obsessed with the other through a supernatural wish-granting mechanism. The host emphasizes their lack of bias toward the director, noting they had never seen his previous content, and invites viewers to predict whether they will enjoy the film before diving into the specific narrative elements. As the review progresses, the host highlights the film's intense exploration of themes regarding autonomy, body horror, and the violation of personal boundaries. A significant portion of the analysis focuses on the psychological distress experienced by the female protagonist, who feels trapped within her own mind as a parasitic entity fights for control over her physical form. The reviewer finds particular unease in scenes where the character's free will is compromised, noting that even without the supernatural element, the male lead's initial obsessive behavior and awkward confession would be unsettling. The host argues that the film effectively portrays the feeling of being paralyzed and violated, drawing parallels to real-world experiences of sexual assault and the loss of independence, which they believe resonates deeply with current societal fears about technology and human rights. The discussion also delves into the moral ambiguity of the characters, specifically debating whether the male lead is an innocent victim of a curse or a villain who takes advantage of his partner's altered state. The host concludes that his intentions were never pure from the start, as his obsession stemmed from loneliness rather than genuine love, suggesting that the universe naturally rewards him with the very nightmare he wished for. While acknowledging that the movie is not the best horror film they have ever seen and lacks the jump scares that typically induce nightmares, the reviewer praises the strong ensemble cast and the effectiveness of its moral concepts. Ultimately, the host views *Obsession* as a significant entry in modern horror that reflects the current climate's focus on autonomy and possession, potentially influencing the genre's future landscape much like previous films did for their respective eras.

because the two can >> [screaming] >> I'm laughing cuz it's uh >> [laughter] >> You guys have been asking for this video since the movie hit theaters. Opening weekend, you guys were asking me, "Tren, watch Obsessed. Tren, watch Obsessed. Tren, where's the Obsessed video?" And I made a decision very early on when Obsessed came out that I was going to wait to do my first time reaction on camera for you guys. I've seen every single phase of Obsessed as a pop culture phenomenon over the past month that it's been out. It's gone from being the underdog, "Oh my gosh, have you heard of it? Have you heard of Obsessed? Are you going to go see Obsessed?" Then it became, "You have to see Obsessed. You have to watch it. Everybody has to go see Obsessed even if you hate horror." And then it turned into everybody seeing Obsessed. And if you haven't seen Obsessed, you're out of the loop. And now we've gotten to the point where Obsessed is the top grossing original horror film of the 2020s, beating out Sinners. The pendulum has swung all the way from obsessed fans with Obsessed all the way to now people are saying it's overhyped. It is not that good and that it actually is a mid movie. But no one's allowed to make a final decision until I have. The movie is directed and written by Curry Barker, who was a and is, I guess, still a famous YouTuber. So this was kind of like a YouTube summer of backrooms with Cain Parsons and then Obsessed with Curry Barker. I never watched Curry Barker's YouTube videos. I didn't know he was a YouTuber and I've never seen any of his stuff before this. So, I'm not like a fan. And not in a mean way, I just I don't have any bias towards this person or have any wishes for him to succeed. I have wishes for people to succeed. And it starts Indie Naverette and Michael Johnston. And like me and Michael Johnston go way back. Like me and Michael Johnston, I know him. He was the gay boy on Teen Wolf. You think I would have forgotten that? I remember. And I think he was I'm thinking he was a chimera. In my brain, I'm thinking he was a chimera in Teen Wolf. Um so, Michael Johnston was a main character on the Trend Level channel 10 years ago. And he's coming back. He's coming back to us. Before we get into the video, I want you guys to leave your predictions down below whether you think I'm going to like the movie or dislike the movie because I feel like you guys know me pretty well, and you guys usually only like request stuff that you either think I'm going to very much like or dislike. So, I want to see what your predictions are for this movie in the comment section down below. So, before you watch it, leave your guesses down below whether I'm going to like the movie or dislike the movie. And we'll see who's the psychic. >> You're the only person that I've ever Sorry, this is weird. I I don't talk like this. >> No, it's okay. >> I don't like him. >> I think about you all the time, Nikki. You were the only person who was nice to me when I moved here. And at first I thought maybe >> Oh. My god. >> that I would choose you over everything. >> Oh, >> [crying and laughter] >> that's everything. >> No. No, stop. Okay, that that that >> That was scary. That was really scary and really rancid, and I didn't like it. >> Did you do that? >> No, it's okay. You're okay. >> It just pretend like >> You're good. >> Like why is he sweating? He's actually sweating. Like he looks very disheveled already, and the movie hasn't even started. He looks like a mess. >> All you have is time. If she means this much to you, and I know she does, wait. >> I just don't think any girl would love to be like I don't think anyone >> [clears throat] >> would love to be like confessed to that extent ever. >> Then I would choose you over everything. >> Even if you do like someone back, hearing that they're like obsessed with you, I don't think would ever feel nice. Even if I did like someone and I was kind of like crushing on them crazy, too, I don't even like even I would be weirded out and I'm crazy. I'm actually psycho. Even if someone matched my energy, it would just be too much for me. It's okay when I do it, it's not okay when you do it. Even if someone I really loved said that I was their everything before we were ever romantically involved, I don't think I would move forward with that connection. Why is the cat dead? I didn't want to see that. >> I needed a good day off. >> Oh, yeah, definitely. You work so hard. >> You know I do. >> [laughter] >> You know I do. I I don't I don't think I can tonight. I'm just catching up on some stuff. >> I'm bored. Let's clean the apartment. >> I don't know. Yeah, we're kind of running out of time, Bear. So, you know, might want to skip that stuff you're working on. >> That's a really awkward conversation and not just on his end. That was like weird on her end as well. Why did she just start randomly going about like we don't have time? What's she talking about the trivia? I actually don't know. I need to pay attention. >> Energy, like good vibes. >> Probably the citrine. I mean, it's basically sunshine in a rock. >> Sunshine in a rock. >> Well, it's ugly. So, I don't know what type of good energy it's giving if it's ugly. That's what I would say. I'm bored. Let's take a shower, dude. Like I'm so bored. Let's like go take a shower and wash our hair. Only $6.99? You can get a wish for $6.99? At least $10. >> They're mad cuz it doesn't work. >> Yeah, or whatever. >> Or it does work and like ruins their lives. >> Or they die, or wish they were dead. >> Yeah. Okay, yeah, it seems like every conversation we have is a little bit awkward. And not just cuz of him. I have to emphasize that. It's not just cuz of him, and because he's weird. >> I was just saying, um I I'll just I'll tell you what it is. It's fine. I I I went to the same >> we were all taking a field trip to the bar? >> Oh my god, he is so weird, and he acts so secretive and weird, and it's like in a friend group, it's like really off-putting. >> To Sandy. >> Oh. To Sandy. >> Sandy died. >> What? >> Yeah. >> Really? [laughter] >> Why did he only tell her? She's the only one he trusts. Oh, he's really sad. Oh, wait. That's the person that likes him. >> Annoying, you can't say anything. Get your girl home safe. >> Ew, don't say it like that. >> Oh, she hates him. Oh, she hates him, and she thinks he's he's disgusting. >> Ew, don't ever refer to us as a couple. That's disgusting. >> Bro, don't do that. >> Oh, um don't let me forget. I I I got you something. >> Ew, no. That Why does that make me nervous? >> Because she finds you repulsive. >> [laughter] >> Cuz I got you a gift from someone you don't like is really creepy. >> [laughter] [gasps] >> I got you something from someone you don't like is actually really annoying and really scary. >> All right, freaky Nikki. >> Oh my god. >> Do you like me? >> What? [snorts] >> Cuz if you do, now's the time to tell me. >> Oh my god. >> I think we're good friends. >> He's so scary. >> Oh, [ __ ] Why? >> And that could not be his confession. Even if it was, even if he did just respond to her and say like, yes, I do like you. Like that couldn't be their story because he looks really bad. And that whole scene with the freaking Nikki was just not it. Right before he said he liked you, he insulted you. No, that couldn't be your story. >> I wish Nikki Freeman loved me more than anyone in the [ __ ] room. >> It's like a wishbone, right? >> Hey, uh I just had a full erection. >> had something for me? >> Like I already used it, sister. Like it's gone. >> I mean, I did just lose my cat, Bear. >> I mean, I mean, you lost your cat. >> What in the world? >> Do you want to come inside or >> This is like her like fighting the spell or something. It sounds like she's her like brain is fighting the spell. >> We can have some drinks and talk about your cat. Yeah. >> What do >> I'm sorry. Yeah. >> Thank you. >> Oh my god. >> She just >> It's like a robot. >> I think you're drunk. >> No, I'm not actually. Wait, what the [ __ ] >> He What the [ __ ] [laughter] >> What the [ __ ] >> No. >> Why are >> No, no. >> Oh my god, her body is fighting it. >> I know what you're trying to do. >> Oh my god. That's not funny. This is actually really [ __ ] scary. >> My dad's dying. >> I'm so sorry. >> I took one step inside my house and I couldn't >> Where do you want to go? >> It's even worse that it's not just like fully taking over. It's like you can see the turmoil between like the original, the host, and the like parasite like in her. Like it's like very much like obvious the two entities fighting. >> Smells like you. >> Like [ __ ] >> What do you mean? Just >> Like straight up ass, though. >> No, just you. >> not smell good in there. I know. with the dead cat, not with the hoarder's nest of pills, not with his disheveled look right now. And I don't mean to say that to be mean, but he does look disheveled. Like that's the only way to describe what he looks like. Just cuz it was grandma's house does not mean we needed to keep it like grandma's house. Like we could have changed something. Just a little bit. I just wouldn't want to have sex with them after they were acting so weird, uh right? What the [ __ ] >> Oh my god, I'm so sorry. >> The host does not like it. Oh my god, that's actually so [ __ ] weird. Ew, like she like she like blacks out and blacks in and then she [ __ ] comes back and then she's like [ __ ] making out with this guy and she doesn't know where she is. Oh my god, that's actually so [ __ ] scary. Oh my [ __ ] god. Oh my [ __ ] god. What the [ __ ] is a probe? >> What were you doing? >> Oh my god. >> Can you live with me? >> No. I mean, that's my whole thing is that like even if like you do like her and like this is your dream come true that she's kissing you, I just don't think I would want to kiss someone after they were acting so weird. Like even without the one wish willow thing. Just in general, if someone's acting weird, like I don't think I would want to make out with them. Like it's just like the energy is not there. >> Oh, no. No, you're supposed to like it. It's a memorial. I >> The fact that she could even access the cat is upsetting. The fact that she could access it means you didn't properly dispose of the cat in the first place, which is weird. That's [ __ ] up. Even burying her. We need to realize who the real enemy is here within the household. Cuz you were okay with kissing and smooching while there was a dead cat rotting in your [ __ ] house. Oh, okay. You freak. >> I know you like me there. >> No, I >> Why would you say no? I don't like you. Do you like me or something, dude? What the [ __ ] Bro, like I I'm bored. Let's turn on the lights. >> Yeah, I do. >> [music] >> Huh? Huh? What in the world? The AI. >> [laughter] >> Me when AI is like, "Okay, like yes, couple things." Like, "Yes." He's got to be the dumbest [ __ ] ever to believe this. I don't know. It's like she acts crazy one night and is like freaking out and you're like, "Oh, yeah, she would obviously want to confess to me." Men are so stupid that they would believe this would happen to them. You would think after they got together he would make himself look a little bit more like put together. I think he looks handsome. I think he's a handsome fellow. I don't think this man is ugly. I just think that he looks a bit like Like he looks a little like you know? >> I looked into Nikki's dad having cancer [music] and he's healthy as a baby. >> A baby? >> He's been to work like every day. >> You know what? You're just trying to [ __ ] ruin this for me. You're jealous. You're jealous of my new relationship. Why would you [ __ ] make that [ __ ] up? >> I love it when that happens in a movie. >> No. No. No. No. >> I've heard this one before. I've heard this sound before. >> I thought we were having a nice day. >> We we are. We are. >> Why does it matter? I thought we were having a nice day. >> We are. We are. We are. We are. It's okay. We are. >> Then why does it matter? >> And you know what? Like you Why does it matter? I support women's rights and their wrongs as well. Oh my god. >> [sighs and gasps] >> Oh, that was amazing, baby. [laughter] >> Pause. Okay. No. Wait. Take a second. Think about it before you speak. Ew, that kind of actually um Wait, why am I getting emotional? Wait, why am I getting I I'm kind of getting really uncomfortable by that and really actually kind of emotional about that. Um Oh my god. I'm laughing cuz it's >> [laughter] >> Wait, I think it's contagious. That's crazy. That's happening through the screen. I think it's actually contagious. Wait. No. Okay. It's making me emotional because Uh I don't even know how to explain it. Like I It's like very drastically showing the feeling of being trapped in your own body as you experience kind of this like violation of your body. And it's not that it's like this like crazy like first time we've ever had like um analogies or different forms of showcasing sexual violence or sexual assault within horror. I feel like that's a very prominent figure and um a prominent um theme within horror movies, especially to women, is this way to showcase sexual assault and kind of that trauma that you go through in a lot of different horror uh stories, classic horror stories of women getting their their their bodies violated. Uh okay, I guess let's watch the movie again. Just a Just an extremely visceral reaction that came for me. Let's get back into the movie. Like let's just ignore that that happened. Just an extremely visceral reaction for me. Needed to take a second. My stomach hurts. Let's Let's just watch this dang movie. Like it's not mutual. No, I I do. Just come back to bed. Please. This is like really gross. Do you think her like one wish Willow entity starts like breaking and cracking when her original version starts realizing what's happening to her and they're like fighting and so then she starts like tweaking out in real life because the two can >> [screaming] [music] >> Nikki? Nikki, where are you? Why would you guys do that to me? That was actually the loudest thing that's ever happened in life and that scared the [ __ ] out of me. He just looks at like he's constantly sweaty in this movie. And I think that's the point. I think he's supposed to look like he's like in distress all the time, but damn. As I was saying earlier before she scared me, I do think that it's the >> [screaming] >> It's like she doesn't want me to speak. >> [laughter] >> It's like she actually doesn't want me to speak. I think the two are conflicting inside of her. Like um Ooh, if you guys remember the movie Host with Saoirse Ronan, when the two hosts like fight, it's like that. Like I think they're having a boxing match inside her brain. >> You what? >> How's this? Great. >> [laughter] >> Great. Great. Yes. I love it. >> Maybe I can pop by. >> No, no. Just make yourself at home. >> Love you. >> Love you. How are you? >> not see that before. >> Bye, Bear. >> Oh my god. Oh my god. >> [gasps] >> The one wish Willow part of her is not letting her go pee because she has to stay loyal to Bear and be obsessed with him. And I know the one wish Willow does not let her poop. I know. >> Steph, >> [snorts] >> you're the last one. >> No, one more. Loser. >> And that girl did it out of her own will. >> [music] >> Think about that. There was someone that wanted to be around you from their own will, out of their own will. And honestly, you don't deserve that. >> What? >> What does that mean? What's the verdict, Cat? >> [laughter] >> What does that mean? What's the verdict, Cat? >> That is so [ __ ] weird. >> Don't tell me she cooked the [ __ ] cat. >> Bear, what does that mean? [music] >> Why is she so obsessed with the cat? Is the her original body trying to feed him the cat to poison him? And why do we still have access to the cat? How are we still accessing the cat to feed it to you? And I think it's her original body trying to poison and kill him. I think it's her original mind trying to do that to him. >> It kind of looks like you're taking advantage of the situation and I say it with love, bro. I'm saying it with love. I'm on your side, but it's a bad look. What do you think this is going to look like to other people? >> Cuz because he's eating because even if it's not One Wish Willow, anyone would see that and see someone having some sort of mental breakdown and someone trying to reap the benefits of their mental state of manic behavior. Which is [ __ ] up. You see a person that is acting completely different than how they usually do and you just so happen to be the love of their life within that moment where they are acting completely different than how they usually do. Right? Cuz even without the One Wish Willow of him taking advantage of her knowing that he wished that upon her, it's still [ __ ] up. Yeah. >> It's a bad look, man. >> unfair, dude. She's the one who won't leave me alone. >> Well, then you should kill yourself. And you should just [snorts] kill yourself. Because essentially the night that she was drugged and acting weird, she's only acted that way since, which essentially means that she's in an induced state throughout the entire thing. >> If you have any questions about how the wish works or if you read the back of the box. >> it even real? >> Yeah, it's real. >> No, I I know that the >> Why is One Wish Willow just like a guy? >> Well, yeah. I mean, as long as you live. >> As long as I live? >> You have to kill yourself. I knew it. I [ __ ] knew it. >> When you die, the wish will go away. >> And if we were on Teen Wolf, we would stop your heart and resuscitate you and it would be a loophole. Oh, I know they did that on Teen Wolf. They did it to Scott. >> What? Who? >> You want to talk to him? >> [screaming] >> Who is that? >> Nikki. >> [screaming] >> What the [ __ ] are we doing? Trapping souls and taking names? What's happening? Like what the [ __ ] They just like lit they They're like in little jars like Ursula kept the souls. What the hell is happening? >> And so, come lie with me like the old woman taught us when we were children. >> She's a keesh. She's actually so funny. That's actually really funny. Whatever the dare was to do this is hilarious. >> He would relent and choose to be inside me like he had many nights before. >> And nobody wants to recite stuff like this anymore. Nobody wants to do this at parties. >> Brother, you will be inside me tonight. [music] >> Nobody wants to read incest smut anymore these days. >> I'm working on? I don't drink. >> That's her book? Incest smut is what she's working on? >> Kiss the person on your left. >> [music] >> Oh my god. >> Who's the prettiest girl in the room? >> Oh my god. >> I dare you to kiss the prettiest girl in the room on the lips. >> Oh, that's [ __ ] up. >> Oh my god, she's going to beat her up. And period, this seat is yours, queen. Like I do not want to kiss this man. I do not want to kiss this man. I can assure you that, sister. I do not want to kiss him. You eat those lips are all yours. Right, pucker up. What are you doing, tigers? I was just about to say. >> Yes, daddy. >> [screaming] >> I was that's so crazy funny. Not that what just happened, but I was just about to say I wish they had her like blacking back in because I thought those moments were so strong within the movie where she blacks back in and it's very scary and you see her like in this like frantic mode trying to figure out where she is. And then it happened. I think having that parts of realization of herself and realizing that it's not her is so strong within the movie and it makes it all that more scary that it's not just this person has been changed, that this person has been taken over and that there's a another person trapped within there. And I think that's very very interesting to see in that way of the conflicting personalities. Why did she just back rooms? Why did she just go back rooms on me and get weird? Baby's caked up. What the hell? He is caked up three cup, bro. Bro, double cheeked up. >> Kill me, please. >> That's so sad. >> She's sleeping. It's me. Just kill me. >> What's so bad about being with me? >> Bro. Bro, that being your first question is craziness, bonkers. What's so bad about being with me? [ __ ] What the [ __ ] are you talking about? I've just been pissing and [ __ ] all over myself because I have no control of myself. What What are you talking about? This is not about you. I'm not worried about you. I am I'm worried about you and being romantically involved with you. I'm worried about being of my own mind and free will. That's actually what I'm worried about. >> Your letter from Luther? >> Yeah. It's my last chance. Figured we could open it together. >> Oh, [ __ ] >> Like you're not going to go to college. You're not going to go to college. You're going to get accepted, but you're not going to be able to go because Nikki has going to kill you. >> It was what? >> The game. >> Oh. >> Like she was actually in love with you. Like since the beginning, before you even [ __ ] before you even got the wish. >> You're supposed to kiss me. >> [groaning and screaming] >> I'm so sorry you had to see that, baby. >> I'm so sorry that I had to see that, baby. What about me? What about me, Nikki? What about me? The fact that Sarah even liked you is a miracle because you before Nikki one wish Willow, you were freak. Even before that, you were weird. Before you made the decision to do that to someone. Damn. >> [screaming] >> Stop. Oh, she dressed up like Sarah? Oh my god. >> [screaming] >> It would just be better if she killed herself. OG Nikki asked you to kill her. >> [music] >> If space is what we need, then take it. It's going to be okay. >> [ __ ] [ __ ] You saw what happened to Sarah. You can't even shoot yourself. You did all that and you can't even shoot yourself. But then what's going to happen to her if she just like returns back to her body that she just committed all these crimes and killed all these people? Like what type of life is coming back to that either? And what type of life is coming back to that even regardless if she wasn't incriminated for the crimes that happened. If he was actually putting everybody out of their misery, he would have killed her and himself. She wished for him to love her and be obsessed with him uh uh or be obsessed with her. And period, he like should have to suffer the same cards he dealt her. Yep, I agree. I actually agree. Now they're both trapped. >> [laughter] >> Thank god. >> [screaming] >> Period. >> [screaming] >> Like how do you even live with that afterwards? Like is Bear all that great for killing himself at the end if he didn't put her out of her misery as well? Was it a movie? Yes. Was it scary? Aside from the like me actually screaming at the jump scares, no, it wasn't scary. Like I don't think this would be a type of movie to like give me nightmares because I guess there's more of an understanding of the premise of the horror within the movie. Performances were great. I thought that the acting was great by everyone. It's a small tight ensemble and I think they all did a really good job. I think that Indie gets a lot of praise for her performance obviously because she does a lot within this movie, but I think that like Michael's awkwardness and this like high amount of stress that he holds throughout the movie is really good as well. Was this like the best movie I've ever seen? No, I don't think it was the best movie. I don't even think it's the best movie that I've seen this year. But it was fun and I also like horror concepts like this. I think that these kind of wishes gone wrong or cautionary tales that kind of take something really simple and turn it into something really sinister are very interesting to me. I think that depending on the experiences you've had, you might view this movie in different ways. For me, it really did showcase and have very strong visuals and themes and narratives of feeling trapped within your own body and kind of this frozen, paralyzed feeling you have uh while suffering from sexual assault. This waking up in your own body and realizing something has happened and you've been violated. I think that it like that is what struck me the most within watching this film and what honestly kind of impacted me the most while watching this film. I think that Bear's character is so interesting because it is these it's not an innocent thought. Like the thing is is that the thought that he has at the beginning of the movie that he's even the initial confession scene that he has in the diner is weird and obsessive. Like he exemplifies obsession from the very beginning and that means that his love from the beginning was not even pure. And so that means his wish therefore is not pure and that's why he got what he got because his love for her came out of his sad, lonely life. This depression that he faced, that he couldn't even see what was actually going on for the people that actually did like and care for him. So when he makes the wish, it's not out of pure love for her. It's like this pure love for the idea of her, for the concept of having someone be your everything and saying that she is everything to him, even in that first initial confession scene, it's not well-intended. Even though I think a lot of people through the movie will say that like, well, he didn't know what the wish was going to do and he didn't know that that was going to happen, so he's not the villain. And I you know, I think we get into a lot of weird discussions within movies nowadays of who's the overarching villain and who's the bad guy of the movie and I think sometimes think we get too caught up on who is the bad guy and really just looking at it from a you know, just a normal like narrative like standpoint because I feel like most movies nowadays try to have this like morally gray character at the center of the story for you to follow. And with Bear, I think that a lot of people see him as this innocent person affected by this wish gone wrong when I think that when it your intentions aren't clear and when your It's like with manifestation, right? If your intentions aren't clear and your intentions aren't pure, the universe will reward you or give you something that matches that, right? And that's why manifesting harm amongst people or you know, manifesting ill intentions towards people will reward you and give you something of equal value, right? I do believe in manifestation and I do believe in like the universe balancing itself out and finding ways for you to get what you give in a lot of different ways. And so I think that is kind of where my where my start of Bear was from the very beginning. Not even once he made the wish, not even once he realized the wish and what it truly meant uh for her to be obsessed with him. Once he started believing that the wish worked, I think that he started believing it sooner than when the movie tells you he starts believing it. Because again, like I said earlier, if we took out the wish entirely and he didn't make that wish and then one day she started acting completely different from how she normally acts, not just with him, not just saying that she loved him all of the sudden, but she's acting manic, she's in distress, she's constantly going in and out of extreme happiness to extreme sadness, she's overprotective, she's codependent, she can't do anything on her own again, she's lost all independence of her life. If I saw that, regardless of the wish that he makes, even if she just started acting like that one day, and for him to take the opportunity of that being the time where she loves him, and taking advantage of that, is still taking advantage of someone. I would love to like talk to more people about this movie now that I've seen it because I've just seen so many like discourses around it. I've just seen so much discourse around this movie ever since it came out and I really kind of either just like kind of mozyed on by it. When my friends talk about it, I'm like I just like tune out like no spoilers, please, no spoilers. And I just haven't really had any in-depth conversations about it. I kind of knew a similar thing about people kind of having this debate over who the villain was. I really don't think it's a debate on who the villain is. I think it's just watching these characters as they are and as they make mistakes and their true intentions behind what they're doing. This movie doesn't really set up as a narrative of a villain and a hero. It's a little bit more murky than that as horror movies necessarily are. It's more of power falling into the wrong hands and an entity beyond just the two characters there having another layer added to it, which is how most horror movies go. Most horror movies nowadays are not just like Michael Myers like coming after you. Most of the time it's more of a concept, a moral concept, um a wish, a possession, uh a haunting energy to it, rather than just uh one big bad guy monster. Movies in general always kind of reflect the time and the current climate of our world, but specifically horror movies have themes of horror that that reflect the current state of the world, specifically in America, but, you know, kind of widespread as well. Through the early '80s and '90s, you have a very big surge of killers and single entity killers coming after people, which comes from the scariest thing that was happening for the climate, which was a person coming to kill you. You have the early 2000s and 9/11 happening, and you have this surge of apocalyptic movies, where that's a very prominent part of horror movies within the early 2000s is apocalypse. And now I think that the current climate of the 2020s, we have this surge of people's rights and their autonomy, I think is a very prevalent theme within horror, not only coming into robots and their autonomy and their artificial intelligence and their humanity and what that means and this realization of self, I think is a really prominent theme within horror nowadays, and a person's autonomy and what that really means and the horrors of having that stripped away from you, whether that is talking about something like technology taking away your autonomy and taking away some of your privacy and rights, or an actual person violating your uh physical autonomy. And so, I think that that's more of the horror landscape right now, rather than I think like even 5 years ago, where uh zombie movies were even more popular. That came from the pandemic, right? There was a surge of a little bit of zombie movies that came out and survival movies that came out after the pandemic happened uh that reflected that mindset that a lot of people had. And so now we're kind of a little bit later and I think what's reflecting is human rights and what that really means and what's scary to people right now is having freedom taken from them, which is so interesting and I always found reflections of climate with horror movies to be so interesting because it it goes back to the beginning of horror movies and what Dracula or Nosferatu meant to the current audience that was watching it and what was scary to them and what was a society's true fear at that time. And so I think obsession is going to play this bigger role. It reminds me a little bit of companion. It reminds me of Ruby Sparks. I think that it I think it has themes of possession and kind of that intruder aspect as well because we also had a decade of horror where intrusions were a big scary thing to the general public. You have stuff like The Strangers and Purge and this idea that your house and your home being violated like that was a very scary thing for the general public. And now we've kind of shifted into it just keeps kind of like caving in on us as a society the closer we get to what is violating and what is truly scary to us as the watching audience. So I'm excited to see what that means for horror not only with the current climate but with the success of obsession that will really change the landscape of horror forever. So aside from just the movie being a movie itself, this will kind of trigger a butterfly effect throughout all of horror and what that really means not just the writers or you know, the fact that it was an independent film that got picked up, um the fact that it was a YouTuber that turned to make it. There's so many aspects of it that I think are going to trigger a lot of different effects within movies in general, but specifically horror because horror is so much more of a ever-evolving genre that can never stay still for too long because so many of the tropes die out pretty quickly. Do I think this was the best movie? No. I love horror, so it's definitely not within my top like horror movies of uh you know, the that I've watched in my lifetime, but I do think it's very good. Uh it's definitely one of the top movies that I watched of the year, but I haven't watched that many that came out in 2026, so that's on me. It was definitely very fun. I thought the performances were really good. Do I think anyone's going to get an Oscar? If Toni Collette and Daniel Kaluuya cannot get Oscars for Hereditary and Get Out, then no one should get an Oscar for horror performance, >> [laughter] >> then no one can. And that's what that's my opinion. Please let me know your thoughts on this movie in the comment section down below.
