Video summary

Motorists traveling through Bemidji will encounter new traffic adjustments starting Thursday, September 3rd, as crews prepare for the final phase of construction on Highway 197. To manage the increased complexity of the upcoming detour route, the Minnesota Department of Transportation is installing two temporary compact roundabouts. These new traffic circles are strategically placed at the intersections of Hannah Avenue and 30th Street, as well as where Hannah Avenue meets Anne Street, specifically to facilitate smoother vehicle flow during the construction period. The primary purpose of these roundabouts is to help traffic navigate the necessary detour around Highway 71, which will be in effect for approximately two weeks. During this time, drivers are required to utilize Hannah Avenue and Anne Street instead of the standard route. The detour officially begins on Tuesday, September 8th, at mid-morning after the start of the school day. This timing was carefully chosen so that construction crews can wait until the morning rush hour caused by students arriving for the first day of school has cleared before implementing the road closure and detour signage. Lakeland News reports that these changes are part of a larger effort to complete the final stage of the 2026 construction project in the area. By utilizing temporary roundabouts, transportation officials aim to minimize congestion and ensure safety while workers finalize their tasks on Highway 197. The implementation of these traffic controls marks a significant shift for local commuters, requiring them to adapt to the new routing immediately following the school day on September 8th. In addition to the traffic updates, the video serves as a reminder that Lakeland News operates as a nonprofit news organization dedicated to supporting the community through local reporting. Motorists will experience additional traffic changes around the Highway 197 construction project in Bemidji beginning Thursday, September 3rd as crews prepare for the final stage of 2026 construction. Minnesota Department of Transportation officials say crews will construct two temporary compact roundabouts along the upcoming detour route. The roundabouts will be located on Hannah Avenue at 30th Street and Hannah Avenue and Anne Street. They're being installed to help traffic move through the intersections during the Highway 71 detour. Now, during the detour on Highway 71, motorists will use Hannah Avenue and Anne Street. The detour is expected to remain in place for about 2 weeks while crews complete the final stage of 2026 construction. The detour for Highway 71 between Highway 197 and Anne Street will begin mid-morning on Tuesday, September 8th after the start of the school day.
