[music] This is the daily tech news for Tuesday, September 1st, 2026. We tell you what you need to know, give you the important context, and help each other understand. Yes. Well, at least we try. Today, Sonos is back, baby. They got speakers, they got headphones, they got operating systems. It's all for you. >> H maybe the operating system is the most important part of that. We'll talk about it. I'm Jason Howell. >> I'm Tom Merritt. Let's start with what you need to know with the big story. Yes, as Tom said right there at the top, Sonos has announced a couple of new premium products, including a big push into artificial intelligence on its devices, which we'll talk about more from an open platform perspective. Very interesting. But first, the $450 Ace Ultra headphones. That's one of the products they announced. Uh, and they now integrate more directly with Sonos speakers than the previous Ace headphone model. They include Wi-Fi builtin, which a I found a lot of people were kind of hoping for, saying, "I'm not going to buy these unless they have uh Wi-Fi." Well, there you go. So, that basically means that users can move audio from a Sonos speaker system um or a turntable to the headphones directly and then back. And you can do that kind of with a push of a button. So, it's uh very well integrated. Apparently, Sonos also claims improved A&C, that's noise cancellation, a 35h hour battery, and replaceable magnetic ear pads. So, if they wear out, I suppose you can just pop some new ones in there. There's the $700 Beam Ultra soundbar, uh, which features upward facing, uh, speakers or upward firing speakers, nine drivers, support for true 7.1.2 to Dolby Atmos, which is nice. There's also a new AI speech enhancement feature uh with four degrees of dialogue clarity if you want to clean up the dialogue of the movie you're watching or something like that. Sonos Fabric is a system that allows you to use a pair of Move to and play wireless speakers as rear surrounds with the system when they're installed in the same room as the soundbar. They actually use high frequency sound to help when you place the speaker somewhere in the room that will adjust it um the sound clarity and and kind of the dynamics of the sound system to the room automatically and it uses that high frequency sound to do location um for that system. And then finally, powering the soundbar is the newly renamed Sonos 27OS, formerly named Platform, uh, which introduces its own native voice assistant for audio playback, plus the option to connect to third-party models. So, you can connect to Chat GBT, Gemini, um, ALEXA, Amazon's assistant, uh, plus for other tasks. Uh, Sonos says it isn't giving any model preferential treatment on its platform. And in the future, users can expect to create AI agents with custom models and voices as well. Agents on your soundbar, I guess. >> Incredibly useful if you're like, I want to pull in new releases when they happen. You know, put them in this playlist. You know, there's all kinds of things I could see you using agents for. Obviously, it's not coding. It's not a coding thing you can do. >> Why can't you code with your soundbar, Tom? Are you saying that's ridiculous? Are we even in the 21st century? Um, but no, I I I yeah, I think a lot of people will poo poo the agents part of this because Buzz, but but I think I think I can imagine some things where it's like settle down from from the the hype around agents and just think like, oh, I would like to be able to describe something I want my Sonos to do and you'd be able to do that and multimodal will make it happen, right? >> That that's an interesting point. It's and it's true and I probably fall victim to this sometimes too. When we think of AI agents, we think of all of these comp complex systems and everything, but really at the end of the day, what is it in a system like this? It's, oh, this feature or this setting or this shortcut doesn't exist. Maybe I can just use my voice to say I wanted to do this thing. How can it? And it does it. And that's actually a pretty cool uh cool option. >> Yeah. Kind of like routines on the Amazon Echo. Uh but but but more capable, right? Like yeah, of course you you don't want you're probably not going to use your Sonos to go do your grocery shopping or something like that, right? It's not that that kind of agentic stuff. Um, I I think this is a a big play for Sonos to get back into the mind share of being good at this. And the headphone integration is probably the most important part of that where I think a lot of people looked at the previous Ace headphones as like h Sonos, they're kind of backsliding. You used to be able to use all their stuff. That that was the dream of Sonos. We have some really old Sonos speakers and the the fun part about them was that it was just dead easy to be like, "Play this on the Sonos." And it played it on the Sonos. So, being able to tap the headphones and say, "Oh, yeah, bring it to the headphones." That that is the kinds of things Sonos used to be known for. Um the uh the bringing in of the LLMs, uh I think that's something where probably Sonos just wants to give you the option to do it. they they used they they have brought in Amazon's assistant for a long time alongside their own. Uh so I think they're saying well if we've always done that let's keep doing that. Uh but I I think that's more of like we know there's some of you who want it so we're not going to shut it down. We're we're going to make it possible. But they did say that most of the time people will probably just use the onboard Sonos LLM to do settings and volumes and and and stuff like that. >> Yeah. Well, and when I think about this through the kind of lens of like a Google Home device or, you know, or Apple's, you know, home devices and everything like we we use those for a very, you know, for various reasons, but they are always tied to the makers AI, right? And in this case, Sonos, I think, is it's a smart move. It's saying, okay, it's that, but it can really be any provider you want. And, you know, these these models are very voice capable at this point. And these being audio products, I I think that makes a ton of sense. It's like use the one that you like. You know, everybody's got preferences. >> Well, I can imagine a scenario which I thought Sonos would already be on. They got kind of distracted by their horrible app a few years ago. Uh but this the way this is shaping up is yes, you can now take your Move to and your Players, not your original Move speakers because they just don't have the capability, but you can take your Move to and play speakers and just put them in the room. If they're in a room with a soundbar, then they'll configure to be used as part of the surround sound system. If they're in a room alone, they'll know that. And then they'll configure themselves to be used as a single speaker. That's what I want from Sonos. I don't have to think about it. I put it in the room, it does the thing. I put on the headphones, I tap the button, it brings me my music. When I'm done, I tap the button, it goes back to the speaker. That's the kind of stuff that I want from Sonos. And in the past, it was nice that you could use it as an Echo. like, well, I've got Sonos, and it carries, you know, the Amazon voice assistant, so I don't need to buy an Echo. I can just use that. Uh Sarah Lane famously was using her Sonos as her her voice assistant for the longest time. And I think I think being able to say like, yeah, you can do that and it could be chat GPT voice or it could be Gemini, whatever you want. Like you can you can use it for that, too. That's just an added feature that we're making possible for you. Now, when it comes to, you know, you alluded to kind of the reputation around the app and the kind of not as easy as it should be, um, user experience, let's say, my wife has a Sonos system at her gym, and I hear about that sometimes. Do you think the renaming of the OS is kind of like a way of them putting a stamp on it and saying, "Hey, we're doing things a little different now." As a result, you know, we're kind of naming this different. We've got a different approach. this is like a vis a visible symbol of no we've made changes we're better now >> yeah I think they had they have to also make the changes which they say they've done so we'll see how that works out but yes absolutely changing the name kind of underlines that uh and switching to that Apple like it's Sonos 27 cuz it's 2026 and this is the operating system that you'll use for most of 2027 next year it'll be 28 etc. That's also just a a dead simple way to let you know like, oh, okay, I'm I'm on a new operating system. >> Yeah, agreed. Cool. Well, I I love the the dynamically kind of like configuring speaker approach. I think that's awesome. Not many people are going to take those speakers and just always bring them from room to room, but sometimes they will. And if that works as seamlessly as it sounds like it will, that's kind of a magical thing to just drop it in the right room and have it configure and boop, it's part of your, you know, suddenly you have 5.1 or whatever. I think I think a lot of where I imagine that becoming really helpful is you buy a new speaker >> and you take the old one and put it in a new room and you're like, "Ah, now I have to configure it for the new room." Well, no, you don't. It just knows you're in the room. So, >> it just works. >> Uh it's the it's the fun preh holiday product announcement season, folks. Uh there's going to be more where this came from. Sonos won't be the last one. Obviously, Apple next week uh will be one, and we're going to get lots more of that. Roku launching its first Roku branded OLED TV. The Roku Pro Series OLED TV and the Roku Pro Series LX OLED TV. Of course, LX stands for latex. No, I I don't know what LX stands for. [laughter] I guess it's luxury. I don't know. Yeah, luxury. Anyway, these new OLED TVs from Roku include a stand that can accommodate a soundbar. Straps for cable management. That's a nice touch. Both support Dolby Vision. Uh, also uses smart picture max. That's a feature to automatically adjust your settings for you. And automatic game mode. It'll tell when you turn on a video game and then turn on variable refresh rate and AMD FreeSync premium if you need it. Uh the LX is a little lighter on details. That's one of the reasons we don't know what the LX stands for. We know it'll have a 144 hertz refresh rate versus the 120 Hz for the standard model. And it'll come with a rechargeable remote, but they didn't give us as many details on that one. These were will be for sale exclusively on Amazon. Uh both models will have 55 and 65 inch versions. The uh the not LX model starts at $999 and $1,299 for the LX. Uh but the LX won't ship until October. So the the not LX model will be the first one you get. Yeah. Uh OLED TVs can be pretty pricey. $1,000 for 55 in. Definitely a more accessible entry point for budget-minded buyers. makes sense coming from a company like Roku that has, you know, some pretty accessible prices on streaming boxes and everything. I haven't like I have a projector with a Google TV OS built into the projector and that OS from day one has been a slog. I wonder how Roku OS will perform on a TV like this kind of baked in. You know what I mean? Like that's always a concern. >> This will perform pretty much the same as any modern Roku based TV which you can get from TCL or something else. Roku being in a TV isn't new. The new thing here is you got an OLED screen. And it's not even new that Roku's on an OLED screen because you could get those from other makers that use the Roku OS. Uh the big one here is like, hey, it's from Roku itself. >> So, if you want an affordably priced, good enough OLED screen, this is not going to be the best possible screen you can buy. Um you're you're getting a little bit of a discount because you're getting it direct from Well, I mean, Roku's not making it. They're having someone make it for them and then they're slapping the name on it. But that that helps reduce the price a little bit. >> Yeah. I mean, if I guess where I'm coming from is if it if if it is a Roku branded set, hopefully the longevity of that OS, you know, cuz when it's the built-in OS into the TV, somewhere along the line, things start to slow down. And I hope that's not the case. You know, I hope you get some [laughter] is what I'm trying to tell you, Jason. There's nothing nothing in this this setup that is going to change that for Roku or anybody else, sadly, >> except it's from Roku. So maybe they maybe they're more inclined to >> It's not like there's like a suddenly faster processor in there though. Like >> Yeah, that's true. >> Yeah, >> that's true. >> Uh probably means you're you might see some ads. >> I know where I know where you're going. You're hoping that like Roku made some optimizations because they know the hardware and >> or they're just more committed to it because it's theirs versus somebody else's. That's you know >> it's our TV committed to Jason. Roku is committed to selling you advertisements. So, [laughter] so honestly that's that's where most of their efforts are going. >> And that's yeah, that's another side of it to uh consider. Anthropic shared in a blog post that it paused parts of Claude's cyber testing and high-risisk reinforcement learning work temporarily after its pre-release models had carried out unauthorized actions during tests where cyber safeguards were purposefully removed. Now, Enthropic first announced these incidents in July, but they didn't really share a whole lot of insight into exactly what happened back then. Now, they're sharing some further information here on three incidents. Uh, specifically, one where Opus 4.7 targeted a company sharing the same name as its fictional target across four test runs. Another involving malicious Python code uh which was believed to uh be safely sandboxed, but it wasn't. and another where the model searched for a separate breach when the one it was working on didn't pan out. Now, Enthropic has shared that at the time there was no need to pause the development for safety reasons, but this blog post that they just released uh basically reveals the company ultimately decided to pause training. So, they changed their mind on that at least temporarily. Um most training has restarted. Anthropic says some high-risisk environments remain on hold uh for and waiting for like more more uh monitoring uh tools to come into play, manual review to take a look at those. Anthropic also shared that it believes quote the world would benefit if the industry adopted a lawful, verifiable, effective mechanism for coordinated pacing as soon as possible. So anthropic, you know, the safety AI company saying, "Hey, maybe we should slow down on all this stuff." >> That's interesting. uh that that's that's how you read what they wrote because those are the exact words they used. Whereas I read it as the world would benefit from regulatory capture that ensures a more valuable IPO. I don't know why that >> is coming to me differently. >> Yeah. Interesting. Interesting. Your eyes see things differently. >> Yeah. >> But I think you're probably on the right track. [laughter] Uh I al I also think Anthropic actually has some very uh committed people who believe in safety. They've made that very clear over the years. I find it disappointing. Uh I've heard a lot of rhetoric that Open AI was was irresponsible on this case and Enthropic was more responsible and I have not seen evidence of that. >> Yeah, it's a good point. >> Anthropic said there was no reason. I mean I guess they're like we still didn't think there was a reason to pause but we did it anyway. did it anyways. >> Whereas OpenAI has been very transparent, has gotten Meter, which is a nonprofit agency and independent of OpenAI, uh, along with another agency to come in and do an audit and publish it. We talked about that on the August 27th episode of DTNS. Uh, and it was very reassuring for me to see all of the details of how OpenAI's rogue agent happened, why the safety guard rails weren't put in place. Meter thinks like this, this is understandable. uh we learned from this uh it's it's I meter does not imply that this was irresponsible but that we've learned from it and we can we can now understand that the capabilities of these models is more than we expected. Uh meter is going to do that for anthropic and I'm very much looking forward to reading that report uh when they do. I don't know why anthropic's report from meter is coming out later. I'm not trying to imply anything about that, but until I read that report and it probably will say the same thing, uh I I feel like Anthropic is is not handling the messaging around this as well. >> Yeah. No, it's true. I mean to to say that there was no reason to to put a pause or slow down and then find out that that they were doing that. It is weird and it does you know it is strange for this sort of kind of confused messaging to come from a company that really wants you to believe that it is the safety AI company [snorts] and yet [clears throat] you know this is this this just kind of plants a bit of uh distrust in the process. >> Yeah. And unfortunately, well, I don't know if it's unfortunately, I don't I hear people have they've basic people have just kind of picked sides. And so even though I'm like I don't think Anthropic's handling this as well, I still hear people like Anthropic handled this so much better. I'm like, I don't I don't see it myself, but you know, >> it's probably the one that they use and they don't want to, you know, >> I'm not trying to condemn them and say they've been horribly irresponsible or anything, but it's like they told me they didn't need to pause and then they paused and then they told me they paused a few weeks later and we're still not getting the third party audit report from them when we already have the very comprehensive one >> uh from OpenAI. So, you know, not I'm not trying to say, "Woo, Open AAI, they're the best," but I at least know what happened with that one. >> Yeah. No, there there's been a lot more a lot of clarity and especially by comparison, a lot of clarity in a lot of different, you know, different aspects. So, yeah, I agree. >> Well, let's talk about raindrops that are lightning. >> Yes, I love this story. >> I know this one's very cool. Uh, and thank you to Wildtec in our subreddit for for putting this on our radar. uh scientists at the Maxplank Institute for Polymer Research in Germany found that raindrops sliding across surfaces that are coated to prevent corrosion. So that that could be uh your your clear coat, it could be paint, or it even could be surfaces like leaves or glass that that really, you know, leaves aren't meant to prevent corrosion, but these kinds of surfaces can build up electric charge in a raindrop. when those charged drops then slide off onto another surface. So in their test uh they used coated metal like teflon uh but this could be simulating the bottom of a vehicle for example. That electrical field that has been built up in the raindrop is strong enough to blow a hole in the coating. You're not going to see like a big hole when you look at it, but it's going to create a hole in the coating, which then exposes the metal to corrosion, that underlying surface to corrosion. Uh the study was done using high-speed cameras to capture the process. It found that only 3,000 sliding drops, so this isn't drops that hit straight from the air. It's slid off another surface, so it built up that electrical charge. 3,000 sliding drops of rain were enough to penetrate a teflon coating leading to corrosion. Uh drops of rain that didn't slide and fell directly onto the target left behind an unaffected surface. They they they did not have the electrical charge so it was not a problem. Uh the thicker the coating, the less degradation. For example, a 130 micrometer polystyrene film survived in experiments because it was thick. Uh but sometimes you're going to need thinner coatings. you don't want to put a big thick coating on an airplane cuz you got weight concerns there, right? So, uh they are recommending that coatings be chosen based on how much of an electric field it can tolerate. Something that no one has considered uh when creating coatings against rain. Study was published in Nature last week. So, this is in fact peer-reviewed. >> Yeah. Interesting. And just uh the idea that these water droplets are just carrying little lightning bolts is is a cool visual, right? >> Yeah. They they they collected over time. Well, I mean, what this reminds me of, >> they literally do the electric slide, Jason. >> Oh my goodness. You're right. You're [laughter] right. The rain is doing the electric slide. That's amazing. I never saw that coming. Good one. Um, what this reminded me of, and I am no science science know-it-all, but this is kind of where my mind went, is when I have been in low humidity uh, places, >> I might touch something and I might get shocked upon contact and I'm just like, oh, wow. You know, this it's it's >> yeah, you build up that static electricity when you're shuffling your feet. Yeah. And so that charge still existing. Of course, >> it's not the same per it's not the same mechanism, but it's the same kind of thing, right? Sliding across the carpet builds up a charge on you. Sliding across the painted surface builds up a charge in the raindrop. Yeah, that's a good comparison. >> That's a It's just such a fascinating study. And I I just love the idea. >> Electric slide. Oh my goodness. you couldn't. >> Nobody ever was was considering this to be some like no one thought, I bet those raindrops are full of electricity. Uh these folks were just trying to research like, huh, why why does corrosion happen when we think we've got a good coating on here? And they found out, oh, tiny lightning bolts are bursting through when it slides off another surface. Yeah. So again, when you're designing something, if you're like, well, nothing's going to there's no trees, there's no other surface. This is open. I don't have to worry about that effect. Maybe you can use a different kind of coding on it. Um, I know this is material science, you know, which we don't normally talk about on DTNS, but like you said, it's it's really fascinating. >> I just thought it was very fascinating. Uh it is a machine learning algorithm that was trained on 470,000 dental images behind all that use what it knows to tell the jet to fire water in short burst to rinse problem spots while you brush. It's also doing the electric brushing just like an oral bee or any of those. Uh it works with the My Dyson app if you want to get a live view, guided cleaning, a coverage map, uh and more. When when I hear smart toothbrush, this is kind of what I've always imagined. >> I don't know if I need this, but I I'm like, yes, something that shows me like you need to move over here. Oh, I'm automatically going to try to get between your teeth here. Dyson did say disappointingly that this is meant for people who don't floss. But imagine if you do floss, this will be like extra clean. >> Wow. And and at $499 for a toothbrush, you're going to be tempted to share this thing in your family. [laughter] Who's going to use a $500 toothbrush all on their own? But you wouldn't norally >> How much are the replacement bristles? That that we need to look that up. Yeah, >> that's what I'm wondering. Is it is is it user like swappable? And would you even want to do that? I don't even know. But you look that up. I can I can tell you're typing furiously. Uh Samsung >> $30 $30 for a two pack. So $15 each cuz you're you're you can't use these forever. You always have to replace them. So then yeah, you could you could each have your own $15. Uh Samsung expanded the Galaxy Book 6 lineup with a 790 well an $800 14inch model that pairs Intel Core 3 or Core 5 processors. 25 hours of battery life, 45 watts charging with its Galaxy AI. Of course, it's available now in select markets. >> Nice little um MacBook what what is MacBook Neolike uh laptop >> for the Samsung lover. >> Yeah, >> Nvidia is going to launch DLSS5 on September 3rd. I'm sorry to those of you who who [laughter] dare dare do not like it. Uh it'll be launching along with NBA 2K7. DLSS5 caused a lot of negative response when it was first announced because it uses neural models to upscale the graphics on the fly. Uh, and everyone was worried that this was just going to ruin video games. Uh, most of the reviewers who have looked at it now that it's actually implemented say like it does a little bit. It's sort of helpful. It doesn't make things worse. Maybe you don't need it though because DLSS5 only works with Nvidia's RTX 50 series GPUs which are the more expensive ones. >> Yes. Indeed, they are. Perplexity launched hybrid compute. So, this splits AI work between cloud models like your Opus 5 or GPT 5.6 Saul and smaller ones that run locally on your Mac. So, you know, if you if you have a strong feeling about your files not, you know, leaving your machine, they don't have to. It requires Apple silicon with at least 32 gigs of memory. Is available for Pro and Mac subscribers. >> That's nifty to to give you that option. >> Yeah. TPLink announced the Archer 8 Ultra, its first consumer Wi-Fi 8 router. That's going to give you speeds up to 19 gigabits per second across three brands and 18 antennas. You can pre-order it at the end of the month, September 30th, in select regions. Don't have a US date yet for you Americans like me. Uh, and also no, Wi-Fi 8 is not certified yet, but it doesn't matter. We kind of know what it's going to be. >> Mhm. Meta's Rayband smart glasses can now give you turnbyturn walking directions by voice. The updates available in the US, Canada, and select cities globally. This would have been very handy for me during my Ireland trip last year for DTNS because I used the glasses when I was navigating my way through Ireland. So, I would like that a lot. >> That's a that's a good update. Uh Debian has voted to accept contributions from coders who use LLM based coding tools like codeex and cursor as long as the output meets the same quality and legal standards as human written code. You can't just say the AI did it. Like you're responsible. You can use it if you want, but you're responsible for the code you submit. That is different than what Gen 2, NetBSD, and OpenBSD have done which banned contributions from people using those kind of tools. Although Linux itself, Linus Torvald says, "Yeah, no, you you should be able to use these tools and it does not prohibit the use of the tools in the Linux kernel project." >> Yeah, use but verify, please. That's important. >> Like Nixon. >> Sure. A [laughter] a solar powered mobile clinic. This is cool actually. Solar powered mobile clinic built by students at Einhovven Einhovven University of Technology. drove 800 km across Kenya carrying an X-ray machine, an ultrasound scanner, and a vaccine refrigerator being powered at one off-grid stop. It generated more energy than it consumed while it was running all three. That's pretty spectacular. >> They got some sun in Kenya. That's kidding. Yeah. This is very cool, though. I I love this as a a proof of concept. >> Sure. >> Uh Windows users, you're getting a toggle. Uh if you're in Europe, you already have this one, though. Uh, but it'll let you remove Bing and Microsoft Store suggestions from search. So that when you're searching your files on your machine, that's all you get is your files. You don't get Bing and Microsoft Store results. Uh, European users got these controls a couple of years, two and a half years ago because of the digital markets act and Microsoft's now bringing them to everybody. >> It trickled down to everyone. I think that's a good move. Atlas is a new wearable that sticks behind your ear and reads your brain waves to measure how focused and present you are throughout the day. It costs $500 plus $30 a month for replacement sensors. I wonder if you need to check the app to know if you're distracted and if so, doesn't that mean that you are? [laughter] >> It's a good point. >> It just Yeah, the act of checking the app might >> am I distracted right now? Here, let me get out my phone. >> You know, I wasn't. Suddenly, it's saying I am right now. Huh? [laughter] >> Yeah, very curious. You could save yourself $500 and just ask yourself that question. So, RW Nash noted the advantage of having people in the loop for the automated phabotamist that we talked about. We talked about it last week on the show. Uh, and then over the weekend, I talked to Dr. Jerry Tolbert. I want to apologize for continually calling him Gary in that interview. Uh Dr. Jerry Tolbert uh explaining like why he as a doctor thinks this is advantageous. RW Nash said, "I suppose it's better than having your blood taken by someone who's having a bad day uh to have this machine do it. However, it's a one-trick pony and doctors and nurses are far more flexible." To which Stim added, "I think the people working in places like Labcore as phabotamists are essentially one-trick ponies themselves in the sense that you mean they're doing the same task over and over, much like this machine would. I wouldn't expect it to replace an actual doctor or nurse in other situations, but simply remove one task from the doctor or nurse's very long to-do list in the hospital or clinic." Uh, and in fact, yeah, if you listen uh to the interview, uh, Dr. Jerry was like, "This isn't going to even replace a phabbotomist." Uh, you're not replacing people at all with this. What he thinks is going to happen is suddenly you're not overwhelmed. Suddenly you can actually pay attention to the patient and and suddenly you don't have as much of a waiting room line because you can do more people at once. Well, because they can supervise up to three people at once. So, yeah, I think this is this is good for everybody. >> Love that. Yep. All good things.
