Ben Shelton vs. Frances Tiafoe, is a
blockbuster all-American clash in the
semifinals of the US Open in 2026. And
both guys are coming off epic matches to
get to the stage. Tiafoe went into the
tournament as the number 11 seed and
would take on Dam in the first round.
And after going down two sets to one,
he'd fight back to win 6-4, 4-6, 3-6,
6-3, 6-4. In the second round, he'd take
on Sekimoto, the qualifier. And after a
close second set, he'd get through in
straight 6-3, 7-6, 7-5. In the third
round, he'd take on Machac, the 22nd
seed. And again, no problem for Tiafoe
getting through in straight 6-4, 6-2,
6-4. In the fourth round, he'd take on
Medvedev, the seventh seed, who he'd
only ever beaten once. And after a
couple of tie breaks, he'd get through
in straight 7-6, 6-4, 7-6 to advance to
the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals,
Tiafoe would take on Michelsen. This is
a battle. After going down two sets to
love, he'd fight back to win 5-7, 3-6,
7-5, 6-3, 7-6 to advance to the
semifinals again. Shelton went into the
tournament as the number eight seed and
would take on Griekspoor in the first
round. And after splitting the first two
sets, he'd fight back in four 1-6, 6-1,
7-6, 6-2. In the second round, he'd take
on Hurkacz. And again, after splitting
the first two sets, he'd fight back to
win 6-3, 5-7, 7-6, 7-5. In the third
round, he'd take on Shapovalov. And
again, after splitting the first two
sets, he'd fight back in four 7-6, 6-7,
6-3, 6-4. In the fourth round, he'd take
on Tsitsipas, who had taken out Fils and
Lehecka along the way. It was no problem
for Shelton getting through in straight
6-2, 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the
quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals,
Shelton would take on Alcaraz, the
number two seed, who he'd never beaten
in previous meetings. And after going up
two sets to one, he'd have to fight in
the tie break in the fifth 6-7, 6-1,
6-3, 1-6, 7-6 to advance to the
semifinals. These two have played four
times before, with Shelton leading 3-1
in the head-to-head, including a match
here a couple of years ago in the third
round where Tiafoe got the five-set win.
They also played in the quarterfinals
back in 2023, where Shelton got the win.
So, the trilogy at this US Open, and
it's going to be really fun to see who
the crowd actually roots for. If Tiafoe
is going to win this one, he needs to
get off to a better start than he did in
his last match. He got a little bit
lucky that the nerves of Michelsen kind
of, you know, failed at the third set,
and you know, he was able to you know
capture that third set and get the crowd
on his side. He also needs to try and
use the crowd cuz he does need that you
know we saw that in the last match that
he needs that for his energy. If
Shelton's going to win this one, he also
needs to get off to a good start and try
and grab the crowd for his advantage. He
hasn't really you know engaged the crowd
too much this tournament unless he needs
to like he did against Alcaraz at the
end of that match but if he just keeps
his cool and serves as big as he has
been, he should get the win here. What a
fun match up. We're guaranteed to get an
American finalist here in New York. I'm
going to go with Shelton no. In a four
setter I reckon Tiafoe might you know
take a set at somewhere along the line
but Shelton's been playing so well and
that confidence boost that he gained
from beating Alcaraz I reckon will put
him in the final of the Grand Slam for
