The Sertoma Club has officially announced that the beloved Winter Wonderland holiday light display in Brainerd will conclude after this coming winter season at the Northland Arboretum. This event, which first began in 2006, marks the end of its twenty-first year of operation, bringing a sense of closure to a tradition that has become a significant part of the local community calendar for over two decades. Throughout its history, Winter Wonderland has served as more than just a festive attraction; it has been a vital source of financial support for various local nonprofits. Over the course of the project's twenty-year run, approximately $500,000 in funds have been distributed to organizations such as the Lakes Area Restorative Justice program, Northland Arboretum, Timber Bay, and the Confidence Learning Center. In the previous year alone, the Brainerd Noon Sertoma Club contributed over $20,000 from event proceeds to these essential groups, highlighting the display's meaningful impact on regional charities and families. Despite its successful legacy, organizers decided to retire the event following a careful evaluation of several long-term challenges that threatened its sustainability. Key factors in this decision included a significant increase in electricity infrastructure expenses imposed by Brainerd Public Utilities and the absence of a long-term lease agreement with the Northland Arboretum. These operational considerations, combined with other logistical hurdles, made it clear that continuing the display was no longer feasible under current conditions. As the final lights are prepared to shine this winter, the community is invited to enjoy one last season of the holiday display before it comes to an end.
