In a prairie ecosystem, the most fascinating aspect is the existence of symbiotic relationships where plants do not compete but instead work in concert with one another. Unlike monoculture crop fields where root systems are often viewed as being in conflict over resources, prairie plants and microbes communicate and share nutrients through a complex underground network. This collaboration allows certain plants to absorb water or minerals from deep within the soil and transfer them via root exudates to neighboring species, effectively pumping life-sustaining resources like nitrogen and carbon throughout the community with the help of mycorrhizal fungi.
The value of a prairie extends far beyond the grasses that are directly consumed by grazing animals or used for hay production; it relies on the entire plant community functioning as an interconnected system. For instance, broadleaf plants like goldenrod may have little direct grazing value, yet they play a critical role by mining deep minerals and nutrients from the soil and making them available to surrounding grasses. This interdependence is comparable to a city where various departments such as electricity and sewage work together underground to support the whole infrastructure, meaning that removing "weeds" or non-grass species based on modern management misconceptions actually undermines the health of the entire ecosystem.
Preserving these diverse root systems is essential because native rangeland ecosystems provide the benchmark for understanding soil health, which includes keeping living roots in the ground as a fundamental tenet. Aldo Leopold's wisdom that intelligent tinkering requires saving all parts of an ecosystem highlights why maintaining prairie diversity is crucial; without it, we lose the standard against which to measure successful land management and our ability to mimic nature when raising food. Although prairies are disappearing at an alarming rate, understanding these underground connections reveals that even efforts to increase diversity with non-native plants can guide us toward the right path, allowing nature to answer its own questions and restore balance if given the chance.

In a prairie ecosystem, [music] one of
the most interesting things is what we
call symbiotic relationships. And that
means that the plants aren't
in combat or conflict with each other.
They're actually
in concert with each other is probably
[music] the best word. And the best way
for everyone to understand this is to
think about a crop field. A crop field
is usually one or at the most [music]
two plants, maybe maybe more, but often
times we're focused only on that plant,
and everything else that's in there, a
weed or even a another old plant from
last [music] year, is competitive. And
the root systems in the plants are are
in [music] contrast with each other or
combat. And that's not true in a
prairie. In a prairie,

>> it's symbiotic where the plants, the
microbes, they talk to each other. They
share with each other.
One plant [music] may pull in nutrients
such as water or minerals
and feed [music]
nitrogen or carbon or other things
through what we call root exudates
to the other [music] plants. They'll
actually serve at a microscopic level.
They pump and feed each other. It's
[music] a fascinating thing that we only
have recently learned to to see
uh with modern technology being able to
focus in at [music] a microscopic level
and how they just pulse at these
nutrients out to each other in [music]
exchange with fungi and we call
mycorrhizal fungi and these things just
the stuff of life in a prairie is so
interconnected.
And so then we [music] bring it up to
the plant level itself and we think of
well, what's the value of a prairie? And
it's easy to see the value of grasses
cuz we can consume them. We can make
hay. Animals, grazing animals [music]
eat them. And people often don't think
that grazing animals will eat the
broadleaf plants and so therefore
kind of modern [music] management says
well those plants are of no value maybe
we'll get rid of them to have more grass
and that's just [music] a very backwards
way of thinking that that community
needs each other it's not unlike a town
or a city that needs

>> the electrical department the sewer
department the infrastructure the DOT
whatever [music] that is all of that is
happening underground so a grass plant
might in fact [music] really need its
neighbors to be able to
mine the [music] nutrients from the soil
that it can't mine itself and so I use
>> [music]
>> something
very easy like a goldenrod plant that
has really no grazing value whatsoever
but we know [music] that those goldenrod
plants mine from the deep the very deep
minerals [music] and nutrients and water
and they suck it up into the top and
they slough it off and the plants
[music] around them benefit from that
and so that's at a level of the plant
and then when we talk about the level of
the community
and why [music] the prairie is so
important it's because of this
interaction and the stuff of life
[music] that it brings forth that if we
don't preserve that we don't really have
what we call a benchmark in fact we
talked about the tenets [music] of soil
health which is keeping a living root in
the soil as one of those five or six
tenets [music] of soil health
and
we need to think [music] about the
entirety of the tenets of soil health
where did those come from or how did we
learn what healthy soil [music] is and
they come from native rangeland
ecosystems that give us the benchmarks
that we compare everything against and
so those root systems are the
foundational premise of [music] all of
it and if we can keep at the prairies
it keeps us
in the know you [music] might say
and I just love this quote from Aldo
Leopold you know that the key to
intelligent tinkering is saving all the
parts and if we don't save [music] all
the parts of the prairie, we don't have
the benchmark
things to compare [music] to to tell us
how we're doing on the rest of our land
management, right?
How do we raise food
and [music] mimic what we learn from
native ecosystems? And we actually can
have [music] both.
Although we're still losing prairies
much too quickly,
it's really exciting [music] what we
what we think we understand about
prairies.
If you're just doing [music] the next
right thing for the soil
that adds diversity
even if [music] it's not 100% native
plants,
you got to ask yourself, [music] am I
still going the right direction? And
what is the first best step? Diversity.
[music] Diversity will beget diversity.
It will lead us right down the right
path to what eventually wants to and
needs to grow there if we allow it to
happen.
Nature answers [music] its own questions
if we give it a chance. Um and that that
diversity
in [music] roots, it starts underground
and it it it goes up from there. And um
man, when you see it explode, [music]
when everything starts to click,
you don't have to be a scientist to to
see
what's [music] obvious.
