I like sports. [music] Basketball, soccer, and lacrosse. >> [music] >> It was like a checkup and she noticed a heart murmur. And she said it was like probably nothing, so we got it checked out. >> All credit to Dr. Donahue because, as Riley said, she [music] thought she had a heart murmur. Um wanted to get it checked out just to be safe. Could be something, could be nothing were her words. And [music] turned out to be something. All right. Yeah, she referred us to University of Maryland Pediatrics. >> [music] >> Um we went to the location right in Towson, and Dr. Chin was amazing and [music] very thorough. Did multiple tests just to make sure. And [music] after that appointment, um came back and just said that she had [music] atrial septal defect. And that more tests were needed just [music] to confirm. We didn't know until further investigation that she was born with it. It was just something that never showed itself until, I guess, at the age [music] of 10. And so, we had additional testing downtown. And from there, [music] he proceeded to tell us that she needed surgery. >> I was actually very scared. >> She didn't seem very scared, [music] but I think we all were a little nervous just because we didn't know what to expect. I'm just so grateful um >> [music] >> that it happened so quickly, and we didn't miss any time off of school. It just was such a seamless process. Something that could be probably [music] really excruciating for some parents. Um and of course, it was scary, the unknown. But just knowing we had the support system [music] that we had, and knowing that she was in good hands. Dr. Forbus was wonderful and told us, you know, Riley, the morning of surgery, he said, Riley, this is a big day for you, but this is not a big day for me. I do this every day. >> [music] >> So, I I might be new for you, but don't worry. This is something I do sometimes twice a day and I'm used to it. So >> [music] >> you're in good hands and sure enough she was and we never had any indication on the sports field with how active she was. Now she's breathing >> [music] >> and and her blood's flowing and her heart's flowing perfectly.
