Good morning everyone. >> Good morning. >> Welcome to class. Thank you online students for joining us. Uh welcome to our e-learning students and also to our in-person students. So last week we finished with chapter six chapter five. Okay. And we began the introduction to chapter six. Today we have to begin studying chapter six. Okay. So before we begin studying chapter six, can someone lead us in prayer please? Anyone? >> Alita. >> Alita. Okay. Amen. Amen. Okay. So, let's begin our study of chapter 6. I hope you are you remember the background for chapter six. Okay. So, what is a background? How many sets of questions or how many main questions in this chapter? Two. And then there are also follow-up questions. Okay. So, yeah. Which is the first main question? What's the first main question? >> Yeah. Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? And what are the two follow-up questions? Verse three. >> Verse two, what does it say? How shall we who die to sin live any longer in it? And verse three, don't you know that as many as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death. Okay. So Paul responds to these two main questions. And what is the second main question? Verse 15. Yeah. Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Okay. So Paul responds to these two questions and he introduces us to the truth about identification. Okay. About our identification uh with Christ uh and how our identification with Christ has set us free from the power or the dominion of sin. Okay. And then uh he presents after he answers these two main questions and two follow-up questions, he presents five action points that we must take to live free from sin and live under grace. Okay? And he also presents us with the truth that God's grace has made us free from sin. So what has God's grace done for you? enabled you to [clears throat] live free from sin. [snorts] Okay. So God's grace also has made us free from sin. Okay. So what should be our response to God's grace? Our response is that we willingly make ourselves slaves to God and to his righteousness which results in holy living before God. Okay. So this is again just reiterating the background. So let's begin studying chapter 6. Can somebody read verses 1, 2, and three, please? >> What shall we say? We are those who have any longer don't you know that all of us who are >> amen so Paul in chapter five has just presented this powerful truth that we are justified. How how are we justified? Huh? >> By grace. [snorts] >> By grace through faith. We are justified by faith. Okay? Because it talks about Abraham. And that where sin abounded, what abounds all the more? Much more? Grace abounds much more. Okay? So where sin abounds, grace also abounds much more. So this question will naturally rise up in the mind of any pe person who reads this that you know where sin abounds grace abounds much more. So this question can naturally raise up in people's mind. If grace increases wherever sin increases then shouldn't we keep on sinning so that God can keep on giving us more grace? Yes or no? We can think like that right? If grace increases wherever sin increases or where sin is abounding, shouldn't we keep on sinning so that God can give us more grace? And you know there is a group of people who call themselves the greater grace. And what is a greater grace? It's okay. You can keep on sinning, doing things because there is greater grace. That is so sad. Okay. So Paul is that's why he's thinking this will this question will rise up in the mind of the reader. So he's answering it. So he's a say asking the question and answering it himself. So what is his answer? Shall we keep on continue sinning so that grace can abound? What is the answer he gives? >> Certainly not. That means absolutely not. Why? Because he says we have died to sin. Amen. Okay. So can dead people sin? No. Right. Dead people do not sin and dead people cannot sin. So that is Paul's point. So Paul's point is that those who have died to sin should no longer live under its dominion, no longer live under its power or its influence. So when we believed in Christ, something radical happened. And what is that? He says we were united in Christ in his death. Okay. So that is our spiritual identification. The truth of our identification that he's presenting here is that we are no longer to be people living under the dominion or the power of sin. Why? Because once we believe in Christ Jesus, we are united with Christ in his death. So when we are united with Christ in his death, we are also dead to sin. sin has no longer any dominion over us. Okay. Then verse three, he says, "Do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?" Now, what kind of baptism do you think he's talking about here? Is he referring to >> water baptism or some other baptism? >> Water baptism. >> Look at the verse three. What does it say? We are baptized into Christ. We are baptized into his death. So is it water baptism? >> Water baptism. >> Is it water baptism? He's saying here we are baptized into Christ and we are baptized into death. He's not referring primarily here to water baptism. But what is he talking about? Yes, spiritual baptism. That means our immersion into Christ by the Holy Spirit. That means we are one with Christ. We are baptized into Christ by the Holy Spirit. Yes, Reena. [clears throat] >> Pastor, are you able to hear students online? >> Yes, I can hear you clearly. >> Oh, you can hear? Okay. Okay. Thank you. >> Yeah. Okay. So, how do we know he's talking about water baptism and not he's how do you know that he's not talking about water baptism, but he's talking about spiritual baptism? Notice the wording. What is the wording? He says we are baptized into Christ Jesus. Okay? And Paul explains this more clearly in 1 Corinthians 12:3. So, can somebody read 1 Corinthians 12:13, please? We were all one body or we were all [clears throat] >> Yes. So here we see that again he's talking that we are baptized into one body and you know by one holy spirit. Okay. So the baptism that Paul refers to in Romans 6 is the work of the Holy Spirit placing us into Christ and uniting us with him. So he's basically referring to spiritual baptism. So water baptism is an outward or the physical expression of the spiritual reality. Okay. uh when we take water baptism, it's the outward or the physical expression of this spiritual reality or the spiritual baptism that happens when we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior that the Holy Spirit baptizes us into Christ. Okay, that means we become part of the body of Christ. We are one with Christ Jesus. So spiritual baptism is the inward reality where the believer is immersed into Christ or where the believer is united with Christ and water baptism is the outward expression of that inward reality. You all able to understand? Yes. Okay. So here he's talking or referring to the spiritual baptism. Okay. So the spiritual truth that he's mentioning here is about our union with Christ. And so Paul wants us to grasp this profound truth that all believers have been baptized into Christ. Amen. And we have been bought into Christ and we have been united with Christ. Therefore, when we are baptized into Christ, we are also, he says, we are baptized into his death. Right? This means that by the coming into Christ Jesus or us being united into Christ Jesus, we now identify with his death. Amen. So, baptism into Christ has a powerful picture of our identification with the redemptive work of Jesus Christ. Okay. So this spiritual baptism that Paul is talking about here, okay, or the spiritual baptism of us being baptized into Christ is a powerful picture of our identification with the redemptive work of Christ with his death, his burial, his resurrection, his ascension and him being seated at the right hand of the father. So we look at that in detail in this chapter. So that is our identification. That means we identify spiritually with Christ's death, his burial, his resurrection, his ascension, and him being seated at the right hand of the father. Okay? Now, think about this. Christ died 2,000 years ago. Yet, we today when we hear the gospel and we believe in Jesus Christ, we are baptized into him. Amen. And at that moment we are spiritually united with Christ and we identify with his death and his resurrection. Now how is this possible? Paul has already explained the principle in Romans chapter 5. He says because of Adam or because of Adam uh sinned, we all inherit sin. Right? We are all born in sin. Why? because of one man's sin. Okay, one man's sin. We all inherited sin. So even through Adam's disobedience that happened thousands of years back, it effects are still felt by every human being even to this day. Right? In the same way, what happened in Christ, his obedience and his death affects everyone who believe in him. Even today you're able to understand? Yes. So just as Adam's act brought death to all humanity, Christ's act brings life and righteousness to all who believe in him. So when we believe in Jesus, we are spiritually immersed into Christ or we are united with him. And because we are united with Christ, we identify with his death spiritually. Okay? So we identify with his death spiritually. Okay. So let's read on. Any questions? Verses 1 to three. Okay. So there are no questions. Can we please move on? Uh uh verses four and five. Can somebody read verses four and five please? that just Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of father even so we also should walk in but we have been united together likeness of his death certainly we also shall be resurrection >> amen so not only have we been baptized or immersed into his death but Paul tells us that we are also buried with him okay so when Christ was buried, we were also buried with him. And it's all talking the spiritual sense. Okay. So through baptism into his death, we also share in his burial. Okay. So Paul is describing our spiritual un union with Christ in his death and his burial. Okay. And then he also continues, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. So Christ was raised from the dead. How? What does it say here? >> By the glory of the father. >> By the glory of the father. Okay. So because we are united with Christ in his resurrection, he says that we are to walk in newness of life. Amen. We are to walk in newness of life. Now if you look at Romans 8:1, it clarifies that Christ was raised by the spirit of God. Okay? Can somebody read Romans 8:11? A very powerful verse. Romans chapter 8 verse 11. But if the spirit of who Jesus Christ >> But if the spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his spirit who dwells in you. >> Amen. Now here we read in this verse that Jesus was raised coming back to verse um verse 4 okay of Romans chapter 6 says Jesus was raised from the dead by the glory of the father. Now what is the Greek word for glory? >> Doxa. Okay. It refers to God's revealed glory. Uh his nature and his works that are made known and a manifestation of his power. So glory is basically who God is, his nature and what he does his works. Okay. So the spirit of God reveals the glory of the father and it was by this glory that Christ was raised. Okay. So what is Paul saying here? Paul is telling us that we have not only received abundance of God's grace and the gift of righteousness which is mentioned in chapter 5 but he says we also spiritually identify with Christ in his death, burial and his resurrection. Amen. So this is our identification. Not only we have have we received abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness. He says now in chapter six we have also spiritually identified with Christ's death, burial and resurrection. Okay. So this spiritual union with Christ has a direct direct effect on how we live today. Okay. So this spiritual union with Christ has a direct effect on how we live today. Okay. So we have been united with Christ in his death, burial and resurrection. Therefore, we are no longer to live under the dominion of sin. Why? Because we are dead to sin and we are alive in Christ. And then he says, but in these verses, verses um four and five, that we should walk how? In newness of life. Amen. We are to walk in newness of life that we have received in Christ. That means the old man is dead. The old person is dead. The old sinful nature is dead. When we are born again, we are now new creation in Christ Jesus. We have the life and the nature of God living in us. That means we are new in Christ Jesus. And we have the life of God running in and through us. And so we should walk in this newness of life that we have received in Christ. Okay. So here when he says we walk in the newness of life the Greek word for life here is zoey that means we have the god kind of life. So this means we are walking in the abundant life. We are walking in the eternal abundant life. We are walking in his nature and his quality of life. Amen. These are just sometimes so powerful truths but it makes us think whether I'm really living the quality of life. Am I living? Is it really living the quality of God's life? You know, is his nature really in me? You know, am I walking in the newness of life or in the abundance of life? Is it really true? It is true. But it's only thing that we need to that's why Paul goes on to say that we need to know these truths. Okay, it's important for us to know these truths. It's important for us to understand these truths and to live in these truths. So when you look at your life and you think your life is so sad, so you know it's it's hopeless. There is nothing good. You need to remind yourself what what should that What kind of life you have? >> Zoe life. So what is a Zoey life? >> What is a God kind of life? What is a God kind of life? >> Eternal abundant life. >> Yes. You must tell yourself that I'm living an abundant life. You might be lacking things in the natural but you need to believe and not believe what you have already inherited that you are living an abundant life and you're saying God I I have received abundant life and I want to see that abundant life that I want to live in the natural. So it's important for us to exercise our faith. Right? God cannot do that for us. He's already given it to us. We exercise our faith. We speak the promises. We believe by faith. We declare by faith and we keep declaring it till we see our quality of life or the nature of life that we are living is the God kind of life that has been promised to us. And that is why I like what Paul says. What does he say here in verse um uh in verse 64? He says we were buried with him through baptism into death. We are also raised from the >> dead. So what should we do? So we should walk in the newness of life. It does not it does not say God you know makes God is going to or you know make us walk in the abundance of newness of life. No he says we should walk in the newness of life. Tell yourself I I need to walk in the newness of life. So this is something that we need to do. So every time if you read bi the bi the scriptures or you read the bible there is some things there's god has done everything for us but we need to work in co- partnership with him. There are things that god has already done for us. There are things that we need to do if we need to live and take hold of what he has done for us or what he has received for us or appropriated for us. We need to take it for ourselves. Okay. So here it says look at the scripture verse four says we should walk in newness of life. So we also should walk in the newness of life. That means you need to walk and understand and know what Christ has done for you. What is your identification? And you have to walk in that um abundant life. Walk in his nature and also in this quality of life. Why does he say walk in the newness of life? Why doesn't he say live in the newness of life? Have you ever thought about it where he says walk? >> It's a practical one. >> It's a practical one. Yes. It's an action. It's a verb. It's an action verb. Okay. And what else? It is progressive. You have to keep on walking. Okay. You can't stop. If you stop, you don't walk in the newness of life. Amen. Okay, that's just my understanding. But okay, anyways. Okay. So, we are not simply improved human beings. Okay. When we when we accept the Lord Jesus Christ as our personal savior, but we are living in the resurrection life of Christ Jesus. That is what it means. We are, you know, we are dead to Christ. We are dead in Christ. We are buried. We are resurrected. What does it mean? That means we live in the resurrected power or the life of Jesus Christ. What is a resurrected life? What is a resurrected life of Jesus Christ? Are you >> what is a resurrected life of Jesus Christ? Back in the right of God. >> Yes. Is abundant life, the eternal life, the Zoey life that God has in himself. Okay. So life that we are walking in now has the life and the nature of God. Tell yourself this. The life >> that we are walking in >> has the life and the nature of God. >> Amen. >> Let's look at verse five. For we for if we have been united together in the likeness of his death certainly we also shall be in the likeness of his resurrection. So this you know shows a completeness of our identification with Christ. Paul says when Christ died we died with him. When he was buried we were buried with him. When we were when he was raised we were also raised with him. So the death, burial and resurrection together describes our spiritual union with Christ. Amen. So although Romans chapter 6 does not explicitly mention Christ uh that we identify with Christ's ascension and his exaltation, but Paul expands the truth elsewhere. Look at Ephesians chapter 2 verse 6. What does it say? Ephesians chapter 2 verse 6. and raised us up together and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus. >> Amen. So this means when Christ ascended, we also were spiritually united with him in his ascension. when uh we have been raised with Christ and we have dominion o over the old life and the world system that is what means we spiritually identify with his ascension. Okay. So it means that you know when we are raised with Christ ascended with him that we have dominion over the old life and the world system. This means the world system has no longer any dominion or authority over the believer. Amen. So none of the things of this world can dominate you because you are united in Christ's death, his burial, his resurrection, his ascension, and him being seated at the right hand of the father. Okay. So why do we as believers no longer have dominion over the world system? because he says the believer has been taken out of this world. So spiritually we've been taken out of this world. Okay. And Paul explains this in Ephesians 2:es 1 to2. Can somebody read Ephesians 2:es 1 and 2 please? >> And you made a who were dead in trespasses and sins in which you walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of >> Amen. So here we see that the world system operates under what system of what is the system of the world? What does it say there? Look at Ephesians 2:1 and 2. What does it say? >> Prince of the power. >> Okay. How does it uh what is the system of this world? It operates under the prince of this world. Yes. But what is the system? It's a system of disobedience and rebellion. Okay. So the people of this world are under the influence of the prince of the air that is Satan. So we can therefore describe the world system as characterized by evil rebellion and disobedience to God. And as believers, we are no longer under the dominion of that system because we have been raised with Christ. Okay? And we live in a world where there is spiritual darkness, where there is evil, there is corruption, there is moral degradation. But these things should not have dominion over the believer. Amen. Why? Why should it not have Why does it not have dominion over the believer? Because >> now don't answer like children. Answer like theological question. Uh theological students. Why do these things of this world have no dominion over the believer? Why? He made us alive. >> Okay. Why do we walk in newness? >> What is he talking about here? >> Yes. Amen. Thank God for vanilla. Because we've been raised. We are dead in Christ. We are raised in Christ. We are uh we are sorry. We are we are dead in Christ. We are buried with him. We resurrected with him. We're we ascended with him. And we are exalted and seated at the right hand of God the father. Okay. So because we are raised with Christ, our lives are now under his rule. So spiritually we have been taken out of the influence of this world. So these are all not just something that oh it's good, it's nice. These are powerful truths that Jesus has accomplished for us and it's very important that you listen carefully that you write it down that you believe these truths that you reiterate that in your life and you live and you walk in this truths because these are powerful truths. So we are no longer only dead to sin but we are also no longer under this dominion of this world. That means the corruption, the evil, the rebellion and the disobedience of this world because of our spiritual identification in Christ Jesus. Amen. >> Only two amens. Okay. Okay. So, let's move on. And because of this, what can we do? Because of this, we can stand against what? >> The prince of Okay. stand against darkness instead of allowing the darkness to dominate us. That means we are light and darkness has no authority over us because we belong to Christ. Our identification is in Christ. But sadly, many believers don't realize this and continue living under the dominion of sin and darkness, under the dominion of the evil system of this world. Okay? But the truth is this. When Christ was exalted and seated at the right hand of the father, we are also seated with him in heavenly places. Amen. And what does that mean? That means that is the place of highest authority. God could not give us any other place of highest authority but he has given us the highest authority. Can you imagine we are where are we spiritually seated in heavenly places. So that is your identity. That is where you should operate from. Not with a operate from a spirit of hopelessness and dejection and oh you know this is happening that is happening Satan is doing that you know this that but you are in a place of highest authority so when you have in in a place of authority what does that mean what does that mean when you're in a place of this highest authority that you're seated at the right hand of God that no other there's no other higher position that God can be give to us what does it mean to that God is in control over our life. >> Okay? >> You have the power, you have the authority over what? >> Over darkness, of the prince of the earth, Satan, the ruler of darkness, over everything that dominates this world, evil, corruption, okay, disobedience, and rebellion. That means wherever God places you, you have the authority and the power to speak into those realms. Whether you are in the realm of um the government office, you're in the realm of ministry or in the realm of uh education or in business or art or entertainment, even family, you speak with that power and that authority. Amen. Because you are seated in the highest heavenly places and everything is else is below you. That means you have control and dominion and you can dominate everything that is below you. And you need to take your rightful place of authority and power. And you need to declare that and speak over things that are oppressing you, that are binding you, that is not in favor of you, that is against what God has planned and prepared for you. And you need to do that. No one else can do that for you. Okay? Look at what Ephesians chapter 2:6 says. It says that we have been Ephesians 2:6. Read that please. Ephesians 2:6. and raised us up together and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus. >> Yeah. So we are also raised up with Christ and we are also made to he says he made us sit in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus. So we are also united or identify with him in his exaltation. So Christ when Christ was exalted and seated at the right hand of the father, we were also spiritually seated with him in the heavenly places. And this is our position of authority in Christ. Amen. So when we confront demonic powers or life challenges or you know whatever is oppressing us or pulling us down, we do so from our position in Christ that we are seated in heavenly places. And we need to understand that we are not striving for a position or of authority that we are not striving to obtain authority but we exercise the authority that has already been given to us. Okay. The authority has already been given to us but what should we do? God cannot exercise that for you. You have to exercise it for yourself or your believing spouse or your believing parents or siblings or your pastor cannot exercise that authority. You need to exercise that authority for yourself. So many believers think uh wrongly that they must strive to obtain authority and they think you know by fasting and praying and engaging in endless spiritual exercises. Now I'm not saying all those are not important. Those are important. Okay. Now let's be clear that spiritual disciplines like fasting and prayer are important. They help us to stay spiritually so strong. They help us to stay sensitive to God. But we practice spiritual disciplines so that we can remain in a spirit good healthy spiritual condition and that we are ready to live and exercise the authority that God has entrusted to us. But it's not to obtain spiritual authority. It is just enabling us or empowering us to exercise the spiritual authority because we are already where are we seated? >> In the heavenly places. So we do not fast and pray in order to earn authority. But we exercise the authority we already have in Christ. Amen. So how do we exercise this authority? By faith. Yes. Faith in God also the word of God. And we also say the name of Jesus. Okay. So in all of these five stages of Christ's redemptive work, we are united with him. How are we united with him spiritually? Through his first one. Through his >> loudly. Even if it's wrong, it's okay. First one. How do we spiritually identify him with him? Through his >> death. Yes. Thank God for >> this man Raju. His death. So because we all because of his death we also died with him. Secondly how do we identify spiritually his burial we were also buried with him. Thirdly his resurrection we were raised up with him. Fourthly before that >> seated in the heavenly places. >> Before that his ascension we also ascended with him. And fifth one exalted and seated. So he was exalted and seated. So we are also seated with him in heavenly places. So together these show the complete scope of our identification with Christ. Amen. [clears throat] Any questions so far? Any doubts? All of you able to understand? You have a question? >> Yes ma'am. >> Yeah, you have a question. Siraj [snorts] >> no ma'am able to understand it. >> Okay. So all of these truths how does what does it mean to us today? How does it affect our lives here and now? Okay. So that is a question we need to ask. Okay. These are all powerful spiritual truths but how does it affect our lives here and now? So let's go back to where Paul began in Romans chapter 6 verse 1. He asked the question. Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? And what is his answer? Certainly not. How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? Verse two. So Paul is not making a casual statement. He's going to going on to explain how this became or becomes a reality in a believer's life. How we can live free from the dominion of sin. So to explain this truth, Paul introduces us with our spiritual identification and that is our union with Christ. That means we identify with Christ in his death, burial, resurrection, ascension, exaltation. So by showing this truth, Paul lays the foundation that we die to sin because we are united with Christ in his death. So how do we die to sin? Because we are united with Christ in his death. Okay? So we are dead to sin because we are united with Christ in his death. So now step by step he begins to show how this truth affects our daily lives especially our relationship with sin. Okay. So Paul primary concern here is not simply to give us deep theology or some abstract doctrine. His main focus is practical. He's presenting the truths, but he's going to move on to say, how do we live this truth or how does this identification with Christ translate into real freedom from sin and how do we as believers walk in holiness? So Paul is not only telling us how who we are in Christ, but also how this identity enables us to overcome sin. Amen. Okay. So in the larger context of Romans chapter 6, 7 and 8, we see that you know um Paul is answering this central question. If we are in Christ, if we identify with Christ, how do we actually live a holy life and overcome the power of sin? Because Paul is presenting this truth here and he's saying, hey, we are dead to sin. So many of them will ask this question. If you're dead to sin, how are we sinning? Right? That's why he says in in chapter 7, oh to me, you know, I do what I don't want to do. And what I want to do, I do not do that. So what is he saying? He's saying we're dead to sin, but why are we not dead to sin? And he presents that in chapter 7 as well. Okay? And then he goes on in chapter 8 to give us the answer for that. So in in chapter six, Paul teaches us about our identification with Christ and how this becomes the foundation for living free from sin. Verse seven, he shows the struggle with sin when we try to live in our own strength. And verse eight, he shows us the victory that comes through the Holy Spirit that is walking according to the spirit and living as children of God. Amen. So the flow of thought is very clear here in Romans chapter 6, he's talking about our union with Christ. Romans chapter 7, he comes back to the struggle of with sin. He's saying he's saying okay I told you that we are dead to sin in Romans chapter 6 but in chapter 7 he's saying even though we are dead to sin why do we still struggle with sin and then in verse 8 he presents the answer and what is the answer it's the power of the holy spirit we can experience uh dominion over sin only through the victory that is in through the holy spirit all of you able to understand okay so this is the foundation that Paul is building for us. We identify with Christ. But identification is not just theological. It is transformational. That means it transforms us. It empowers us to live lives free from the dominion of sin. Amen. Okay. We'll move on to verses six and seven. Before that, any questions, any doubts? >> [clears throat] >> No questions, no doubts. The truth is very powerfully sinking into your heads. [laughter] Some of you are thinking, is that really true? You know, yeah. Okay, let's move on. Verses six and seven. Can somebody read verses six and seven, please? Knowing this that our old man was crucified with him that the body of sin might be done away with that we should no longer saves of sin for he who has died has been freed from sin. >> Amen. Thank you. So how does he begin verse six? Knowing this. That means Paul is also saying we don't know this. It's important for us to know this. So Paul is emphasizing that we must know and understand this truth. Many believers do not have a clear understanding of what happened to them through their union with Christ or what happens to them when they receive Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. So we need to understand the spiritual reality so that we can apply it into our lives and walk in the freedom that Christ has provided for us. Amen. So in this verses in verse um six and seven okay he's talking about whom? The old man. Yes. The old man versus the >> old man versus what is the opposite of old man? >> New man. Yes. So the old man refers to the sinful nature or the unsaved human spirit. Okay. And the old man comes through whom? [laughter] >> Old man comes through. How did you all come? Which race? Adam's race. The old man came through Adam while the new new man comes through >> Jesus Christ. So we when we understand that Jesus is the last Adam. Remember last week we learned >> um first man >> Adam and the >> last man is Jesus Christ. Okay. Also we learned that um uh Adam was the natural man. Jesus is the spiritual man. Okay. And so here why is Jesus called the last Adam? >> Adam. >> Ah yes because we understand that the old man comes to an end in Christ Jesus and the new man begins him does not mean that Jesus is the last man. There's no other man born after him. No last man means or last Adam means that the old man comes to an end in Christ and the new man begins in Jesus Christ. So in Christ we are a new creation. Amen. So in contrast the new man refers to the new nature in us that is created in the image of God in righteousness and true holyness. And the old man refers to the old sinful nature which has an inclination toward sin. Okay. So what happened to the old man? What does Paul say here in these verses? What happened to the old man? >> Yes. That our old man was crucified with Christ. So when Christ was crucified, we also spiritually identified with him in his death. Therefore, our old man was crucified with him. So, which part of us was crucified? Our old man. Our old man was put to death. This means that in our spirit, the old sinful nature is no longer our our identity and is no longer the ruling nature. In our spirit man, we have the life and the nature of God. So as believers, we have the new man through Christ. Therefore, there is no longer a sinful nature ruling where in our spirit man. However, our mind and our soul need to be renewed so that we can learn to think according to God's truth. Our mind and our soul is still has the old nature. In our spirit man, we are made new.
