Video summary

Mrs. Savita Devi, a 71-year-old woman from Bihar, sought medical attention at Manipal Hospital Old Airport Road after suffering from severe knee pain for over four years. Her condition had progressively worsened in the last six months to the point where walking short distances, climbing stairs, or even sitting down became extremely difficult and painful. Upon examination, Dr. Sunil Kini diagnosed her with advanced stage four arthritis, characterized by significant bone-on-bone damage, audible crepitus sounds, and an inability to fully bend her knees, a condition observed in approximately 95% of severe arthritic knee cases. After confirming the extent of the damage through X-rays, Dr. Kini explained that a total knee replacement was the only viable option for such advanced arthritis. He presented Mrs. Devi with a choice between conventional surgery and a robot-assisted procedure, which she elected to undergo. The medical team successfully performed bilateral robotic knee replacements using their specialized technology, resulting in an exceptionally smooth recovery. Remarkably, the patient was able to walk the very next day after the surgery and was discharged within three to four days, utilizing a walker for assistance during her initial rehabilitation period. Six weeks post-surgery, Mrs. Devi has made a full recovery and is now able to walk without any support or aids, reporting that everything is functioning well. She expressed complete satisfaction with the care she received from the hospital staff, doctors, and nurses, noting that the entire experience was handled with professionalism and kindness. At nearly one month and seven days since her operation, she feels confident in her recovery and has regained the ability to perform daily activities independently. The patient highly recommends Dr. Sunil Kini and Manipal Hospital to anyone facing similar issues with knee arthritis, emphasizing the quality of service and the advanced capabilities of their robotic surgery program. At Manipal Hospitals, robotic knee replacements are routinely performed using various robotic systems, followed by a structured rehabilitation process that supports patients in regaining mobility quickly. This approach not only addresses the severe pain and functional limitations caused by arthritis but also offers patients a faster return to normal life with improved outcomes compared to traditional methods.

Initially the pain wasn't much but uh subsequently to the past 6 months she found that increasingly walking even for a short distance of 50 m or climbing stairs or sitting down was increasingly difficult and painful. She also noted that she was not able to bend her knee completely. So I examined her and found that she had an extremely bony or a virus knee that we call which we usually see in about 95 patient of arthritic knee. There was sounds coming from the knee which you call as crepitus her knee was very painful to bend and x-rays confirmed the same. I told her that for a stage four or advanced arthritis only choice is a totally knee replacement procedure and we gave her the choice between conventional and a robot assisted knee replacement. So she went ahead for a robotic procedure. We performed both her knee replacements using this technology. Patient did very well and was able to walk the next day after surgery and was discharged within about 3 to 4 days time with our activities which she used to perform herself with the help of a walker.
