Um, and I what's wild and one of the reasons we didn't get to it. Um, well, it wasn't showing here obviously, but then there was a lot of mixed reviews about this. >> Oh, >> like it has like 2 something on letter box. >> Why? >> Um, I think it's people so different >> familiar. It's not a very Indian style movie. I mean, outside of maybe the the end parts with like visionary. >> It is. It is if you've seen Nelson. >> Yeah. But like it's like if you don't get like all the references and stuff, you're like what the it's not everybody's competition. It's western music. It's it's all this like it's a very western style Indian movie um in terms of like almost like um >> Nelsony Quintney like there's a whole bunch of different genres and so I think a lot of people maybe aren't weren't like expecting it or familiar with a lot of the references. If they're going in expecting like a standard Massie film, >> it would be confusing, especially if you don't get all of the cinematic references. The review you read >> by Anu Rock is very spoton. I just I loved it. That's that's I don't know where my medals have gone, but they're somewhere around. >> I didn't do anything with gone for a few months. I'll look for them later, but >> it's a that's gold. That That's exceptional. Uh with blue diamonds all over the place. the obvious from the very get-go. The first 30 seconds on cinematography, lighting, production design, >> freaking charts. >> Cinematographer. Oh my god. >> Cinematography was a Why is it doing that? We can just Shreas Krishna and team fant fantastic. Yeah. A fantastic. And the lighting department. >> And the lighting department, production design, >> obviously super is the is the mastermind behind it all. >> Yeah. [snorts] >> Um and I love his brain and I love how much of a cinnaphile he is, not just for Indian cinema, but for Hollywood cinema as well. Wanting to blend them. >> Um I think it's it's wonderful. This would have been one of my favorite films from last year. Yeah, it really would have been. Um I I'm I'm looking to see >> a lot of people were apparently very disappointed with the second half of the movie. >> Why? >> I thought it was a lot of fun. >> I did too. >> Like maybe they were like, "Wait, why is he now in a jungle like and they're fighting to the death and this thing?" I'm like those are clear references if you've seen >> what he's referencing. And I thought it was like fun. It was like it was sticky, sure, but it was like I felt like that was the vibe. Um there it is. >> Great score by Santia. Okay, so six songs. Oh, good. The one I wanted. >> Lose your mind. >> Do they? >> Yeah, I want to add some of that to my playlist. I'm gonna listen to then the one is probably good. I'm going to listen to that later. >> Do they bleep at >> Yeah. I don't know. But but so so good. I mean, I don't know why. I mean, yeah. I guess you know, the second half, what's our run time on this whole thing? >> 240. 245. >> Okay. Yeah. the the the second half it does wind up, you know, landing on the island and keeping But I loved that. I just they never lost track of the story. This the the the the stepdad is still looking for the goldfish. >> Mhm. >> He's still looking to win his his girl's heart and and not give in. And then real I love the story of and I'm sure there's a lot of symbolism in there that goes back to other things that I would I'm still not familiar with. I love the fact that his that she realizes the anger season of his life was part of his dharma >> and that he needed to fully embrace that in order to overcome evil. And then once the evil was overcome, he could set it aside and be the laughing person that she fell in love with. >> And that it it wasn't a bad part of him. Yeah. >> It was going to be served for a high purpose. >> Yeah. And even the silly part of the movie um like the whole laughing element was like this is >> this whole movie is kind of ridiculous. >> Yeah. >> Like but it's >> but it's still got a message and it's got heart >> heart message and they do it in a like um they're very con um [snorts] a lot of conviction in how they do it. >> And so it's like you can make this kind of ridiculous style of a story in terms of this guy can't smile or laugh, >> right? He can't smile or laugh obviously and this guy has a Thor has a Thanos hand and [laughter] >> and his people can't laugh which I think is another great tie in the fact that he himself is con so deeply connected to his people they can't laugh he can't laugh and they won't both be able to really get there until they have fully realized everything together it's very well done >> and there's um kind of a colonization element obviously >> big time uh in there a message of of taking it back like it was almost like a I the captain now kind of thing at there at the end. Um, >> uh, taking it back, like beating the white people that were just watching. Um, >> and defeating the people who had given in and were playing into those white colonizers. >> Yeah, exactly. >> Yeah. >> Um, and then the Oscar worthy >> shot. >> I'm telling you that I'd have to go back and look at all of them because there's been a lot of really great uh one shots in in Indian cinema history. >> Can't think of one better, >> especially Droj DK of course. Yeah, >> those are probably the next closest ones, >> but that might be the greatest oneshot scene in Indian cinema history >> that we've seen. >> Yeah, >> and it's right up there with >> and it's not a spoiler. Every episode of Adolescence is a >> oneshot. >> Uh, and they they didn't do any cutaways. They It's It's every episode is a >> oneshot. Um, and sometimes you are astonished at some of the transitions they make just like in this where you're just flabbergasted at how did they make that transition without an edit. >> This was that and I I really cannot think of film cuz we've seen some in TV. There were some one shops in in both family man and I believe a couple in poll maybe >> that were exceptional. none as good as this that had literally we had one-on-one dialogue. We had a full dance number. We had a full choreographed fight scene, >> elevation, >> and we had an interior. We had an exterior. We had elevation changes. We had every kind of lighting you could imagine. >> It must have been at least 20 minutes >> of of a one shot. >> I want behind the scenes footage on that. >> Behind the scenes footage. >> I want behind the scenes footage on that. >> That was absolutely epic. um the color the color uh not just the color grading and the the color correction but how they used it in the storytelling and made certain colors be symbolic of certain things. I I just don't understand [laughter] what there is not to enjoy about this movie. >> Yeah, I know there were there were a lot of people um some people even on Patreon because I I asked and like some people are like I think you should give Retro a try. Um, yeah, >> but there were others that were like, "No, it's terrible. Don't watch it." Um, >> and and all this kind of stuff. Like there's these like reviews as like on um Letterbox. Uh it said, "Come back, Sudia. Go back Caric. Two stars." Like like I >> I don't understand. Um, and I think a lot of people just didn't get it. >> I guess I don't know. >> Um, it's like it it felt very one he was trying to make a fun movie >> automatically, right? >> Achieved. >> He was trying to make a fun movie and he was also trying to shout out I think that's one of the reasons it's called retro >> amongst others. so many tips of the cap >> that like it's a shout out to so many movies that he probably loved growing up and wanted to and we've seen that in a lot of his cinema and that's a whole style of cinema that's a cinema that's not a remake but it's a shout out to so many different styles of cinema >> um because cinema's been around for what over hundred years now >> um and he's clearly a student of cinema just he's probably like an onarch type he's just >> yeah I need to watch movies I need to make movies and I need to um show my love for them. Um and I thought it was so much fun. There was so many different elements in this. Even like the silly villain uh and the dad were like um obviously they were stickers, but they in this style of a story, I think it worked very very well. And the fight scenes, even they though they weren't like the best fight scenes, they were fun. >> They're very entertaining. Um and part of that was the camera work. >> Yeah. >> Part of that's the camera work. The other thing that I find is really incredible is for for as much of this could have been such a hot mess, >> it never lost its tone. Yeah. As as wild and wacky as it got, it it stayed from start to finish. It doesn't feel like sometimes you watch a movie like this and the first half and the second half are completely different films. This felt like it was one continuity of just originality. Very much like a Nelson film in one and a half stars. insanely boring for something which dabbles in so much stuff. The last thing you expect is to to be boring, but this is excruciatingly boring, bland, and devoid of any personality. >> That person is on [laughter] crack. >> What the [ __ ] >> Are you kidding me? >> What are you talking about, man? >> It's nothing but personality. >> Like, that's all it is. [laughter] >> Oh my god. >> Wow. Um, maybe it's people that like big fans of Sudia and so they they want they're expecting but he was great. >> I know. I I I agree. But like they were expecting maybe a typical Sudia movie. Uh whereas Studio is like I'm going to give it to Caric and you make your movie and I'm just a vessel for you to make tell your story. Which >> I guess >> that's what actors are supposed to do by the way. Um, I guess you know that is one of the things that happens is that if you go in with an expectation and I try really hard >> usually when I get screwed up on a film it's because I've gone in with a particular expectation and then if I revisit the film I realize you know what I imposed my expectation on it >> when I I literally driving over today I was reminding myself it's like don't have expectations for the film today. >> Yeah. >> Don't come in with an expectation. Just let the film be whatever you want the film to be. And I think that's part of I bet a lot of folks if they were they were honest about a lot of films they dis they disliked. I mean I was willing to watch Animal a second time. I wasn't wrong about Animal. Uh but that is u something that probably did happen with the Surya. The Surya fans might have been expecting it to be a certain film because that's what they like from him and they didn't get what they expected. Um, yeah. I think a lot of people I guess I don't know. >> I think a lot of people didn't get the references of >> And >> but even if you don't, isn't it still fun? >> It's still fun, but it's more fun if you know the references. >> Of course. I love the fight scene that they incorporated the Pulp Fiction dance. [laughter] >> That was great. >> Cuz if you know Pulp Fiction, that's one of the most fun parts of Pulp Fiction is iconic. >> But even if you don't know Pulp Fiction, how fun is that to see that dance number? But then if you don't know and you don't know that they're they're spoofing a gladiator street fighter in the scene and then you're like, "Wait, why are they randomly doing weird dances?" >> Yeah, I guess. I don't know. >> I'm telling you, man. It's >> I mean, if anything, you couldn't be you couldn't just walk away and say something about the one shot. >> Yeah, >> come on. That's worth the price of admission. >> Yeah. Even if the rest of the film was [ __ ] I'd be like, "That was awesome. >> It's worth watch it for the one shot." But thankfully, I would watch this again. I would I would absolutely love >> it's one of my favorite Carthic films. >> Absolutely. And Sudia >> uh >> and Puja Hegday was great. She's she's wonderful in that role. >> Uh cuz we liked we liked Pet, right? That was the superstar one, right? >> Uh that's the one Mahan is the one with Vickerman and his son, right? >> I believe >> and we enjoyed that one. >> I think the only one we haven't liked is Pizza. >> Uh no, we didn't like Jiggerth. >> Oh, that's true. >> We like Jigonda DX. >> We didn't like it. Correct. first chicken >> and we weren't surprisingly like everybody loved pizza. We we we thought it was >> Yeah, it was okay. It was mid for us. >> It was very dated >> and man is that but think about pizza compared to this thing. >> Well, pizza was his first. So, >> I know but what a different film. >> Yeah, he's a good uh he's definitely honed his craft and kind of perfected his style a little bit. Jiggerthando double X. We enjoyed Mahan. That's the Vicram one. We really enjoyed that one. Uh I don't know what that Jigam I don't know what that is >> by the way. shout out. Also, you know, sound design was off the charts. >> Yeah, I think funny enough, I think a lot of people's favorites are pizza and Jeronda. [laughter] >> That's funny. >> And so maybe we just have a different taste. We like his older stuff. >> Well, it definitely I think >> I mean his newer stuff. Yeah. I think folks who who have a deep uh embeddedness of western cinema >> will appreciate some of the things that he appreciates. That's why Anurog appreciates it. I could see how a lot of it would get >> like if you don't get it, you're like, "This is a weird jumble [laughter] of genres and uh textures and styles and cinematography. Um, but I if you know it and I feel like it's a lot of fun. I feel like it was very congruent. I felt like >> like I I liked it a This is easily one of my favorite um >> um Carthic Subage movies. Um and I know it didn't I don't know if it did I don't know if it made money. I know. >> Yeah. And it's uh >> it was very uh mixed received. >> That's so 2.8 on letter box is criminal in my opinion. >> I agreed man. >> Criminal. >> Criminal >> for 2.8. That's wild. >> It just doesn't make sense. Um, >> yeah, I gotta add this to favorite watch alongs of the year so far. >> Oh, yeah. This would definitely be one of my favorite watchalongs. Um, maybe. And I think I I did hear people being like, "This is going to become more of a cult classic." I think it was people ready for it. >> Maybe. >> Um, >> did it do well at the box office? >> I don't know. Like, somebody gave one star. Absolute garbage. >> Wow. >> Uh, I just that's so wild to me. Um, >> and I really loved the score. >> This person did give it one and a half stars and said WTF. But that one shot though. [laughter] >> Well, at least at least they gave the credit where the credit [laughter] is due. >> No, I loved it. >> Yeah, me and me too. That was that was >> uh Somebody said, "I still can't figure out why people gave it a negative review for these types of movies. The acting of studio was peak and it was a cult classic film. wholesome love story and action music by Sant. He took the film to another level. Definitely one of the best Carthic Superman. So he he agrees with us. >> It would have been all the more great in a theater on the big screen with an audience. >> Yeah. Ah I just Yeah. What a what a f how oddly flat this person said. Wild calling this movie flat is like seriously like this is so unique. I flat would never come into my mind for this movie. You know, >> whatever, man. Feel the lat. What's he uh what's Caric got working on right now? Wow. The Carthic Subra movie. It's just is it coming out this year? Is it something else? Anyways, I love Carthic Subra. I'm excited for anything that man does. He's on a tear right now for us cuz he did retro and I think we didn't see these two, but we saw Petra. We liked all those. It was anything be >> Yeah. We've had like four or five sixes in a row. >> And I think what I remember we stopped [ __ ] [ __ ] thunder. I think I what from what I remember it was just it was felt very boring. >> Mhm. [clears throat] >> I think we got through over an hour of it and it was just that felt flat. >> Yeah, I think so. It >> doesn't mean it's bad. It's just it wasn't just maybe we weren't ready. Maybe we were expecting more of this. Uh I cuz I expected like from Caric I always expect now like this is going to be unique. There's going to be a fun shout outs usually even not like this blatant but in like um >> there's always going to be something. >> The one with Vicram in a sun. >> Yeah, there going to be something in the soundtrack. There's going to be a poster on cool cinematography. >> Great cinematography. >> Um that's just what I expect from him. I would love to talk to him. Uh, I would assume he's going to keep and has kept if we looked really did a deep dive that he keeps his creative team together. Why would you not? I mean, everybody is off the charts good. Everybody, costumeuming, makeup, and hair, stunts, uh, editing, sound design, production design, lighting, the cinematography team, just keep this team intact because everybody's on the same page. >> Uh, boy, that was so fun.
