We are here at an old mine. This was
first established as a claim in 1871.
It's a silver lead mine.
And later silver chloride.
There was a cool
chute here that comes down. There's some
higher workings.
You can see the waste pile up there.
I'm standing on top of a pretty big
waste pile.
And there are workings all the way down
this mountain side, it looks like.
And then way in the distance down there
probably around 1,000 ft down is a stamp
mill, a single stamp mill.
And we're going to hike down there
later.
So, let's get going climbing the hill.
We're going to go up to these upper
workings and see what we find and we'll
start there.
That's looking out over Death Valley.
In fact, I believe Telescope Peak is
straight ahead in the middle of the shot
there.
This way there are all kinds of little
workings
on this steeply angled
vein.
Uh
and then up the hill is a few more.
So, we're going to start all the way up
the hill. Well, here's a pretty big
opening.
Uh some different looking stuff there.
Crystals, you can see all there
forming cubes.
This kind of goes all over the place,
doesn't it?

They're very haphazard workings around
here.
There's little diggings everywhere.
>> Look at this, just sitting in there,

Those are all crystals the way that's
cubed like that.
Okay, this has the look of inside of a
geode.
Isn't that crazy?
All those crystals.
You turn your light off once.
For a while they fluoresce.
Look at that.
They fluoresce in orange.
That's pretty cool.
Okay, turn your light back on.
So you can see what we're looking at. So
we're looking at this whole wall of
stuff here
that would all fluoresce like that.
Okay, here are these crystals again.
Let's try one more with the
ultraviolet.
Yeah.
I don't know if the camera's picking it
up, but it's pretty cool in person.

So, here's this white vein there of all
crystals.
Let's look at that in the
UV spectrum.
So, it's just that narrow band.
Man, that is cool looking though, isn't

The vein is almost iridescent purple
when I see it out of the direct light.

I thought it was heavier duty like a
cylinder and a piston inside of it, but
it's not. It's It's pretty light duty.
And then there's a hub or something
right over there.
All right, we're heading down to see if
that's a mill down there or what it is.
Not easy going down this actual uh
pile [snorts] and slope. Everything's
loose. Well, here's what's left of a
dynamite box. Looks like a Dupont, I
think.
Looks like the Dupont logo there,
doesn't it? If you

And then the other side is

And we're heading down to the mill.

Out here in the middle of nowhere.
It's quite a ways below the mine we've
been exploring which is
way at the top of the ridge on the
horizon as far as you can see.
This is looking out into Death Valley.
There's a trail that comes up over here
which is right ahead of Julie but I
don't see how you would haul any ore.
Maybe down it.
On a mule.
This would be the mount for the engine.
Which would line up with the big wooden
drive wheel there.
Which would turn the shaft there
and the cams, see there's a double cam
there on that shaft.
And it would hit the lifting block and
lift the
the hammer up.

the hammer's still here.
Everything's here.
This is crazy. What's it doing out here?
I noticed that this one support on this
side
I was standing up on top of it was
getting pretty rotten.
This little funnel here is where you
would have fed the ore
or down into this
area on top of the hammers.
And every time it would lift up a
certain amount would slip past that
and fall into the
area where the hammers are. I can't
believe this thing's out here.
I mean, it's really cool to see it.
Bang, bang. Can you imagine this thing
banging away out here in the middle of
nowhere?
And how in the heck did they get ore to
and from this thing?
I mean, it's crazy.
