Ranking The Title Reign Of The Best And Worst Of The World Heavyweight Champion

What's good y'all? Bull Ross back at again with another video. So, I'm going check out every world champ ranked from worst to best. Now, I think um Andy's going to be talking about the recent World Championship run, not the previous one. Um this is due to the fact that Roman Reigns had the WWE Championship and the Universal Championship both at the same time. Nobody was beating him for that title. So, they had to have a top title on Monday Night Raw. Hence the reincarnation of the World Heavyweight Championship, which has new lineage. They're not considering the old World Heavyweight Championship lineage with the new World Heavyweight Championship, which is actually funny cuz Roman Reigns still ended up getting the World Heavyweight Championship when it was all said and done. So, it didn't even really matter. Roman still got all of the championships that he wanted. But, nevertheless, we're going to check this out. Ranking from worst to best. If you haven't seen his videos, go check them out. But nevertheless, let's check out this whole who's ranked from worst to best. Once Roman Reigns unified the WWE and Universal Championships at Wrestlemania 38 on April 3rd, 2022, it left the company with a problem. As with the tribal chief being a Smackdown exclusive talent by then, there was no more top prize to fight over on the Raw brand. >> So to combat this, a new belt was created, one which took more than a little inspiration from the past, as it was a second version of the old World Heavyweight title. Which is how do all of the 10 reigns with this title so far rank from worst to best? Well, that's exactly what we are going to be looking at right now. So, make sure to subscribe to the channel if you haven't already and join us as we look at our first entry, CM Punk's first run. Yes, like with both of his runs as AEW men's world champion, CM Punk's first spell with the World Heavyweight title would be absolutely cursed. But unlike those prior two runs, this wouldn't be a result of injury or suspension. No. In the case of the belt which Phil Brooks won at SummerSlam night one in August 2025, the problem would be he'd only hold it for a few minutes before someone beat him for it. >> How did that happen? Well, after surviving a grueling war with Gunter in the main event of the show to win his first world title since returning to New York 2 and 1/2 years prior, the Second City Saint would be left prone to a Money in the Bank cash-in from one of his arch rivals, Seth Rollins. Obviously then as the storyline at this point was that Rollins was injured. It meant Punk was completely unprepared to fight him here. And even if he had been, he was already too worn out from going 30 minutes with Gunter to put up much of a fight. So that's why once the bell rang again, it only took the architect 10 seconds to dethrone the new champ. So that in many ways makes it the worst of all world heavyweight title runs then. Hell, he didn't even make it out of the ring with the championship around his waist. still at least this did >> it is kind of eye poetic if you can say he got hit with the Drew McIntyre treatment. He literally got hit. Drew had the title for like five minutes. Literally had the title for five minutes and then CM Punk costed him [laughter] the Chicago native to eventually win that strap back. Something he'd do the following year with this being a title run we'll talk about in more detail later in today's video. For now though, let's instead move over to our number nine entry in the list of worst to best world heavyweight title runs. Another one which only lasted for a short time, the unfortunate spell Drew McIntyre spent on top [laughter] back in April of 2024. >> Now, while he has cooled off a fair bit since then, it's important to note that back in 2024, Drew McIntyre was redot. Clearly then given how much momentum he was building up, there was a push from many to have him win the top prize of the brand that he was on back then. And as he was on Raw in 2024, this meant the World Heavyweight title. How would he eventually do this? Well, after earning a shot at the inaugural champ Seth Rollins at Wrestlemania 492 that April, Drew would be able to make pretty short work of the architect, largely on account of the fact that the Davenport native was coming in already injured. And this meant after 10 minutes had passed and McIntyre was holding the World Heavyweight title on his head, all while he'd barely even broken a sweat, he must have seen it as a highlight of his career. But that was not the end of his evening as it happened. No. Immediately after winning, the Scotsman would get into a skirmish with CM Punk at the commentary desk with this leading to Punk laying him out and [laughter] leaving him prone for a Money in the Bank cash in. That's right. This was another example of someone being cashed in on mere minutes after they won the gold. In the case of Drew McIntyre back in 2024, however, it wasn't Seth Rollins who was calling his shot. Rather, it was Damen Priest. And because he was fresh and hadn't just been laid out by CM Punk, it meant the Archer of Infamy was able to make short work of the new champion by beating him in just 9 seconds. Still, even if this meant the boy from Air had an incredibly short run on top, it did have the unintended effect of fueling his Brettheart in 1997 inspired heel character even further, as it gave him another reason to be angry at the world. But let's move away from 2024 for now and back over to 2025 instead for a moment, as it's there, we'll find our number eight entry in the list of worst to best world heavyweight champions. someone who had a longer run than the prior two, but who still failed to make much of an impact with it. Jay Uso. Sure, back at this point in time, Jay Uso had managed to get very over with the audience. So, it made sense the company would want to try him out as champion. Hell, that's exactly why they had him win the Royal Rumble in January of that year. And once he did that, it meant the San Francisco native had a date with the then top dog of Raw, Gunter, at WrestleMania 41 night one. The only problem was with there being plenty of doubters about whether or not Jay would be able to carry the brand as its champ, some wondered if he should lose to the Austrian at the showcase of the immortal. >> I don't have a problem with Jay winning. It's just him tapping out Bonte just to this day still feels like it shouldn't have happened that way. I think he definitely should have won to get his moment, but not tap him out. Maybe make him pass out. I could live with that more. But tapping out Gunther, that will that will never get away from Gother. He can retire as many people as he want until he retires Jay Uso, that will always be a thing. Like Jay can say, "I tapped you out at Wrestlemania." It's a crazy crazy statline. >> But in the end, Triple H decided it was worth the risk. And so that was why he had the Us tap out Gunter in 16 1/2 minutes. >> Where would things go from here? Well, while the celebration in the moment was welcomed, and while Jay would remain popular with live crowds, as the weeks went on, a backlash against him grew bigger and bigger with the main concern about him being that he wasn't a good enough singles wrestler to be the ace of the main brand. It didn't matter who he was defending against, be it Seth Rollins, Logan Paul, or anyone else. The concerns remained. So, after realizing the whole experiment wasn't really working, Triple H decided it was time to switch things up on the June 9th episode of Raw that year. That was the night where less than two months after he won the gold, the bloodline member would drop it back to Gunter. Could things have gone differently if he'd been given more time as top dog? Maybe. But then maybe not. As by this stage, many fans had made up their mind. And while a portion of them remained behind Jay, it seems the booking team were just not into the whole thing. No, the reality seemed to be that Jay Uso was in a better spot as an upper midc card act, someone who could even be slotted into a main event program from time to time, but not as a world champion. Now, it was generally felt that the honor should be saved for people who could go a bit harder in the ring. So, it was then that this would be the way the lineage of the World Heavyweight title has gone since then with it really only being top guys or guys on the cusp of being at that level who >> I'm be honest with you. I don't know if they'll ever put a world championship on Jay again. I'm going be honest with you. I don't know if they ever will. Not to say that they can't. I just don't know if it'll ever happen again. I think that experiment may have been a oneanddone situation. I don't think it's gonna happen anytime soon. That's that's my personal opinion, but I could be wrong on that. I could be wrong. >> Who held the strap? Does our next entry fall into that category? Well, not exactly, as his big title reign came before Jay Usos. And while it did help to elevate him to a main event level for a while, that elevation wouldn't last for the long term. So, with that said, let's look at him now. Our number seven entry when it comes to worst to best world heavyweight title reigns, Damen Priest. That's right. Earlier on when we were talking about Drew McIntyre's ill- fated short run as the ace of Raw, we mentioned it was Damen Priest who cashed in his Money in the Bank contract at Wrestlemania 491 to dethrone him. And that marked the first time the belt had been used to truly raise someone to another level as the inaugural champ Seth Rollins was already there as was the Scotsman to some degree. In the case of the Judgment Day member, however, he still felt very much like an upper midc card act on the cusp of something greater. So, for him to get the honor of walking out of the showcase of the immortals with the belt around his waist, well, it was a sign that WWE hoped bigger things were to come for him. >> How would this title reign go from there? Well, it was okay. Yeah. >> And we say okay because while it certainly wasn't bad, it wasn't particularly great either. Sure, Priest gave everything he had to represent Raw while he was the champ, but for the most part, his output here showed that he was still at more of a midcard level when compared to the bigger names like CM Punk, Roman Reigns, and Cody Rhodess. Still, the New Yorker would give us some highlights over the four months which followed as he'd defend against a variety of opponents such as Jay Uso, Drew McIntyre, and even Rey Mysterio at one point. In the end though, after a valiant reign which went on until August of that year, Damen Priest was felled by Gunter at SummerSlam with this title change coming in part because the judgment day turned on the incoming champ here. >> Obviously then that meant he came out of the show as an official baby face after having played a quasi one for most of his title run. Could this one have been improved? That's hard to say, as Priest certainly gave everything he had. Maybe it was just a case of being where he was at back then and that if he ever got another goaround with the top prize in the future, he might be able to have a stronger reign that would see him place even higher in the rankings of world heavyweight champions. For now though, he'll remain at number seven and that means he's unfortunately in >> maybe he works better as a heel and I don't know if they're going to, you know, they may be teasing that with him and our truth but maybe he just works better as a heel. I don't know. He just doesn't resonate as much as a baby face. Y'all let me know how y'all feel about Damian Priest as a baby face overall. Do you feel like it it makes sense? Is it bland? Is it good good to you guys? Let me know. I think he works better as a heel. >> The bottom half of the list. But at least he's not alone in that as everyone we've covered already today also falls into that category. As does our next entry. The person who for our money is number six when it comes to worst to best world heavyweight title reigns. That's right. It's time for us to talk about Gunter and his second reign. Of course, Gunter's first goaround as world heavyweight champion was fantastic in its own right and is something we'll go into deeper detail on soon. But when it comes to his second, well, that was altogether less impressive. Not because the Austrian had regressed as a talent or anything here. No, he was just as good as he'd ever been when this one started in the summer of 2025. The only reason we say it wasn't as good, in fact, is because it really didn't last for long enough to properly get going. After all, in between beating Jay Uso for it on the June 9th episode of Raw that year and losing it to CM Punk at SummerSlam night one on August 2nd, only 53 days would pass with this being a lot less and Daring General had to work with during his previous reign. Why was it so short? Well, that was probably because WWE wanted to get the belt on Punk so they could do the whole plot twist with Seth Rollins cashing in his Money in the Bank contract to beat him at SummerSlam. Really, then you could say Gunter was a victim of timing here. Hell, you could argue he was also a victim of circumstances in that the gap between his first and second world title runs might never have happened at all if Jay Usuzo hadn't gotten hot and beaten him at WrestleMania 41. Yes, if that hadn't occurred, then it would have likely been one lengthy unbroken rule of dominance from the Austrian, one which would have no doubt been a lot better remembered. But instead of that, we got this abbreviated second goaround on top with this one only having time to give us a few noteworthy moments such as him beating AJ Styles on an episode of Smackdown, [music] him destroying Penta on the house show circuit, and him retiring Goldberg at Saturday night's main event 40, all while the gold was still around his waist. Clearly then there was a lot of good in this run and if it was anyone else it may have ranked even higher in this video. But considering how great Gunter is and how impressive his first reign had been, the standards for him are a lot higher than they are for most. That's a fair point. >> Really, what this needed was a few more notable defenses against big-time opponents and it [music] would have fully been taken to that next level. But as things stand, it can only come number six and that makes it the weakest of the Austrian spells as the ace of Monday Night Raw. But let's move away from that for now and instead move on to our next entry as this one takes us to the top half of the list. The point where the real fun stuff starts happening. Who would get that number five spot when it comes to worst to best world heavyweight title reigns as far as we're concerned? Well, that would be none other than Seth Rollins second [clears throat] run. Of course, while this was a strong reign overall, stronger than any we've looked at today thus far, it's another example of one that was ultimately cut short. and that's why it only ranks at number five. Before that abrupt end though, we'd get a lot of great moments as the architect worked harder to serve as the workhorse of the Raw brand. How was he doing this specifically? Well, by taking on any and all challengers who were placed in front of him. Yes, despite being the heel here as the leader of the vision, Rollins often worked in a very fan-friendly manner in the ring when he was putting his gold up for grabs. It doesn't matter if we're talking about LA Knight, Jay Uso, or even CM Punk, the man he took the belt from. During the 78 days he was champion, Seth was going hard and was on track towards possibly even topping his first run. But as we all know now, Fate would have other plans in mind as it was while taking on Cody Rhodess in a WWE Champion versus World Heavyweight Champion exhibition match at Crown Jewel 2025 that the Davenport native would injure his shoulder with this necessitating he vacate the belt the next night on Raw. How cruel this was then. After all, it really felt like they >> and that's that's usually unfortunately the the story of Seth. he would get some good momentum and then an injury would happen and it's like it sucks cuz now he has to vacate the title and that's kind of been his career always getting to maybe that cusp of something really really great and having some cool and legendary iconic moments but then injuries derail all the momentum that he's built and it's really unfortunate were just getting going here. Hell, the long-term plan appeared to be for Rollins to remain champ for a while, possibly as far as Wrestlemania 42, at which point Braun Breaker could leave the vision behind and dethrone him as a new babyface top dog. But things don't always go according to plan in wrestling. As with injuries always being a risk, sometimes you have to rip the script up and completely rewrite it from scratch. So, like we said a moment ago, while we'd like to go higher for this reign of Seths, we really can't, as there just isn't enough meat on the bone to justify such a thing. No, all there is is an all too brief run, one which should have been so much more. Thankfully, then, a run which had to be cut short certainly wouldn't be a problem when it came to our next entry, as this would be a very lengthy one with it completely solidifying the guy who held the belt as a main event player in WWE. In fact, if we're talking about examples of RAW's top prize elevating someone, then this is the best one to look at. So, let's look at it now. Our number four entry for worst to best world heavyweight title reigns. Gunter's first one. Now, we're at a point where there are people who would argue for any of the top four as being the overall number one. We could certainly see an argument for this being someone's favorite as well while it wasn't the first. And while Gunter wasn't the biggest star to hold the title around his waist, he might have been the best overall wrestler to do so. >> And during his first go-around on Top, he certainly got a chance to show that. Hell, perhaps even more so than his spell as Intercontinental Champion prior to this. It was here that Gunter really reached his high water mark in WWE. How did it all get started? Well, only a few months following his loss of the aforementioned Intercontinental strap to Sami Zayn at Wrestlemania 40, the Austrian would bounce back in a very strong way by winning the King of the Ring. And as a result of him doing that, he'd become the number one contender to the World Heavyweight title at SummerSlam in August. Who would he be facing off against here? Well, this would be the incoming champ, Damen Priest. And unfortunately for the Archer of Infamy, >> Yeah. Yeah. You you you knew it. You knew it. It was the writing was on the wall for Damian. I think there was nobody that didn't know. Yeah, Damen's losing, bro. Damian's losing. And I enjoyed this match, but Damian's losing. It only makes sense. Bunther literally came off of one of the best, and some may say, and I wouldn't even trip. They said it, the best Intercontinental Championship reign of all time. He literally was cooking with that championship. Brought major prestige to the IC title. And you knew once he dropped that, you knew where he was heading. It's only up from here. And him being the world heavyweight champion, it made sense. And he looked and felt like he looked and he he he fit the part of a world heavyweight champion. He'd simply be no match for Daring General on that evening. So it was then that the reign of Gunter as Raw's ace began with this lasting for a full 258 days from there and seeing the big man take on everyone who wanted a shot at him. And in the process of doing so, he'd show them exactly why he was the man. More important than the length of the run here though was the match quality the Vienna native produced. Because as perhaps WWE's best in ring performer, he was regularly able to steal the show with his defenses. So on work rate terms alone, you could easily argue this was the top world heavyweight title run of them all. Sadly though, as with all good things, this reign would eventually come to an end. And that end would happen at Wrestlemania 41 where the Austrian would tap out to Jay Uso. Yes, as we discussed earlier, while that second run was fun, if a little short really can't compare to the original. Now, in that first GA to run as champ, what we have is one of the better title reigns in modern WWE history. one so good it will be remembered for a long time to come. So with this in mind, what could possibly top it? Well, how about our next entry? One of the more recent examples we have to talk about today. Yes, we're getting into the tippy top reigns now. And there are few more tippy top than our number three entry in worst to best world heavyweight title reigns. Who are we talking about here? Why, CM Punk and his second run, of course. Now, if CM Punk's first reign with the title based off of that famous big gold belt was too short for it to really mean anything, then his second one rectified that as here he got a lot more time to work with. That said, it might never have happened at all if Seth Rollins hadn't fallen to injury. Why is this? Well, he was the champ when he had to vacate the gold in the summer of 2025. And because there was now no Top Dog on Raw, it meant a match had to be held at Saturday night's main event 41 where the Second City Saint would take on Jay Uso with the winner to be crowned the new World Heavyweight Champion of Monday nights. Needless to say, then Punk won this one. And from there, he'd go on a run which lasted for 169 days all the way up until WrestleMania the following year. What was he doing during this period where he was the man? Well, like with so many of the other champs we've looked at already today, he was defending against all comers. Yes, Braun Breaker, AJ Styles, hell, even Finn Balor at one point got a shot at the strap. And while each of them put on a valiant effort, none were able to toppled the Chicago native. Though, it wouldn't be until Phil Brooks met Roman Reigns that he finally lost his belt. Thankfully, then by that point, he'd gone a long way toward redeeming his prior run, as this was one of the better reigns the World Heavyweight title has ever seen. Is there anything which could have made it better and seen it rise even higher on the list? That's hard to say, as the top two are difficult to overcome. And it's not as if Punk didn't give everything he had while he had it in his possession. >> This ring I did. >> Sure, maybe some additional time could have helped, but probably not all that much if we're being honest. As the real selling point to this reign was the fact Phil Brooks managed to keep the main event scene on Monday nights from crumbling in many ways after the prior champ was taken out and a lot of stuff had to be rewritten very quickly. Yes, the Second City Saint showed he was still someone who could be called upon to get the wheels back on the track again. But what about our next subject? The man who served as the face of the entire company over the last few years and had what we think is the number two entry in the list of worst to best world heavyweight title reigns. Who are we talking about this time? Who else but Roman Reigns? [laughter] That's right. >> It always comes back to Roman, y'all. It always comes back to Rob, this this entire belt, this championship is only created because Roman had the top belts in the Universal Championship and the WWE Championship only for him years later to get the World Heavyweight Championship. This Roman can't be stopped, bro. He cannot be stopped. This is hilarious, bro. >> The man who beat CM Punk for the strap at Wrestlemania 42 has thus far the second best run with that particular piece of hardware. And we say thus far because as things stand as of the time of this video's recording, he's currently still in possession of it. So, while his run has been very strong so far, it could get even stronger before all is said and done and could see him even end up reaching the number one spot. What has made it so special? Well, for one, it's seen the tribal chief, at least in part, step away from his part-timer role, as he's become a more frequent fixture on Raw ever since winning the gold. Yes, since WrestleMania this year, Roman has already successfully defended his title three times against opponents like Jacob Fatu and Seth Rollins, winning all without interference. And considering how infrequently he was appearing before that, this is a lot. Yes, this is a situation where the leader of the bloodline feels more locked in than he has in a while, as he seems determined to solidify his spot as the ace of his generation ahead of someone like Cody Rhodess. And for fans, that's been great as it's awesome to see him on Raw almost every week. And to be honest with you, uh, he's been like the championship matches, especially the, um, the one he had against CM Punk at Wrestlemania, match of the weekend. That match was so damn good for Wrestlemania. And then the one he had with Seth Rollins, match of the weekend for SummerSlams, so damn good. I even enjoyed the Jacob Fatu match as well. Like, he's been cooking. You cannot deny he has been cooking when it comes to the match qualities and the stories they've been telling. I do know they're going to set up something most likely. Well, I won't say I do know, but there's a good chance they're going to set up something with LA Night probably add maybe uh Money in the Bank maybe. I'm not sure. And then they're going to probably do something involving the Bloodline and anyone else who's involved in their story line right now at um Survivor Series. if they do add another PL to the schedule to the calendar year. But nevertheless, not going to lie to you, him being the World Heavyweight Champion, it works. It works and it he he looks right as the World Heavyweight Champion and giving us some good matches so far. So, I can't complain. Sure, this run is always going to be compared to his 1,316-day long reign as undisputed WWE Universal Champion from back in the early to mid 2020s. And when placed in comparison to that, it can't help but look weaker. But that was a different time with a different set of belts. So, this one should be looked at on its own merits. And on its own merits, it's been very successful in making Raw continue to feel like the A show. something which isn't as easy to do as you'd think when the Smackdown roster currently includes most of the big names. We're talking about people like Cody Rhodess, CM Punk, Sami Zayn, Kevin Owens, Randy Orton, and Gunter here, just to name a few. Where will the dominance of Roman Reigns take the red brand next? That's something we'll have to keep watching the show for if we want to find out. He seems to have plenty of time to build further on what he's already achieved as it doesn't look like he'll be dropping it anytime soon. Now, the likelihood at this point is that the head of the table keeps the gold around his waist all the way up until Wrestlemania 43. At which point, he might just end up losing it to someone like an oba. >> If they do it right, this is it. Th This is how you cap it off. This is how you cap it off. That's why I think they're going to extend this Braun Breaker Obami feud. I think Bronson Reed will probably get into the mix. They're going to extend this. They have to. Granted, when you really think about it, he really should have been had a world championship match opportunity since he is King of the Ring winner. Just put that out there. But nevertheless, they had to get back to the Brock story. I think it ends Roman Oba. Simple as that. That's where the story ends. And that's where an Oba is crowned your new top guy. The question becomes, can they keep that momentum from now all the way to next year's Wrestlemania? That's a long time. I don't know if they can keep that momentum. That's why I'm like, I'm not sure if that even is the right decision to wait till Wrestlemania because it's a very long time. He doesn't even to be to be honest with you because he won King in the Ring, he doesn't even need to win the Royal Rumble because he already has a guaranteed ticket. So, I don't know how they're going to explain that, but we'll cross that bridge when we get to it, guys. I guess >> Femi, but even that may not be enough to see him take the top spot away from our next entry because as far as we're concerned, they're an easy lock for the number one spot in the list of worst to best world heavyweight champions. So, let's talk about them now as we look at Seth Rollins again, this time in his first run as champ. Yes, we know that second run ended bad as Seth got injured and was forced to vacate long before he was supposed to drop the gold. But none of that can take away from the fact the architect still holds the honor of having the best run with the top prize on Raw as his first one ranks head and shoulders above everyone else's. Why was it so strong? Well, back then, Rollins was still very much in workhorse mode. So, he would go out on a near weekly basis and deliver in the ring with this standing in stark contrast to the very limited appearances we were getting from then undisputed WWE Universal Champion over on Smackdown, Roman Reigns. That's right. This was a reign of contrasts in many ways, and it positioned the Iowa native as more of a Ric Flair than a Hulk Hogan. An important distinction. So important was this. In fact, it helped to establish the new prize as something with its own identity for a while with it becoming a belt for the real wrestlers on the roster, unlike the Hollywood one on Friday nights. Of course, as you might have noticed in that last statement, this was also the inaugural run with the World Heavyweight title overall. So, for that reason, it was extra important it'd be established strong here. >> This was the workhorse championship. They literally made a championship for Seth to, you know, ultimately carry because there was no Roman wasn't around no more. He had beat everybody. And then what made it even worse is it was technically that the titles I don't think at that point was unified yet between the WWE Championship and the Universal Championship. I don't think they were unified. So because they weren't unified at that moment, there was technically three world championships. You had the WWE Undisputed Championship. Well, no, you had the WWE uh championship. Then you had the um the Universal Championship, and then you had the World Heavyweight Championship, but because Roman had both of them, both all three championships had different lineage. Now, they of course they tried to say, well, Roman's you know, holding both unified them. It wasn't until they actually made one singular belt that I think fans kind of officially acknowledged that. But nevertheless though, Seth needed this. And a lot of times, Roman would make like make that belt seem like it was nothing. Like it was like second, third at best. He didn't really care for it until now that he became world heavyweight championship. Now he care about it. But you know, you know how that go. You know how that go. You know how it go. I don't have it, so it's not that important. Now I want it. It is important. It's crazy. But nevertheless, Seth was cooking because we didn't have a world champion because he was he was on his yacht. [laughter] >> Why is that? Well, when this belt was first introduced, there was a lot of talk of it feeling lesser in comparison to the one Roman Reigns was holding. So, when Seth Rollins won it at Night of Champions in May of 2023, he felt like he had a lot of weight on his shoulders as he was being tasked with making this prize feel like it deserved to be the top one on Raw.
