Video summary

Purdue University is launching a groundbreaking initiative to address the emerging needs of the quantum industry by establishing a comprehensive degrees program designed to cultivate a next-generation workforce. This strategic effort aims to leverage strange quantum properties to revolutionize communication, computation, and sensing technologies for the betterment of society. By forming strong partnerships with both government entities and private industries, Purdue seeks to propel real-world advances while empowering the nation's growing quantum economy through robust educational collaborations between its College of Engineering and College of Science. The new program offers a wide array of academic opportunities tailored to students at various stages of their careers, ranging from undergraduate certificates and minors in quantum information science to specialized concentrations for electrical engineering graduate programs. At the master's level, Purdue provides both on-campus tracks and an online Master of Science degree, alongside micro-master's options specifically focused on quantum technology, computing, and sensing. This flexible structure allows institutions to quickly train a well-rounded workforce capable of navigating a young and unpredictable field that requires diverse skills spanning not only pure quantum mechanics but also semiconductors, microelectronics, and optical technologies. Central to the curriculum is an emphasis on experiential learning, ensuring that students apply classroom concepts directly to real-world challenges through project-based education. The program integrates perspectives from both science and engineering disciplines, preparing graduates for roles in key research areas such as atomic molecular and optical physics, quantum control, materials science, and nanophotonics. With a faculty of 65 members within the Purdue Quantum Science and Engineering Institute, the university leverages its top-20 ranking in quantum computing to push the boundaries of scientific discovery from laboratory settings into practical applications that impact daily life. Ultimately, this initiative represents a giant leap forward for both nanoscale research and global education by offering summer schools and study abroad experiences focused on quantum computing. The scale and breadth of Purdue's approach ensure it can reach vast populations including undergraduates, graduate students, and working professionals who need to become quantum-aware and proficient in the coming decades. By persistently exploring promising aspects of quantum information science, Purdue is committed to building a robust ecosystem that drives economic advantage while enabling significant technological growth across the United States.

A century after the discovery [music] of quantum mechanics, we are now entering a new era in which we can leverage those strange quantum properties [music] to make the world a better place. Purdue University is developing quantum technologies to revolutionize the way we communicate, compute, and sense [music] the world around us. As the quantum industry emerges, a next-generation [music] workforce is needed. >> We strive to amplify the impact of Purdue's broad range of quantum research by forming strategic collaborations to propel real-world advances. In partnership with industry and government, we're building the future quantum workforce empowering the nation's quantum economy. >> Together, we can drive quantum [music] economic advantage while enabling and growing a robust quantum ecosystem in the United States. >> Purdue's College [music] of Engineering and College of Science are answering the call. Introducing the comprehensive quantum degrees [music] program. At the undergraduate level, a quantum information science and technology certificate, a quantum technology concentration [music] for electrical engineering, and a quantum science minor. At the graduate level, master's [music] and PhD concentrations in quantum, and an online master's degree. Plus, a micro master's in quantum technology, [music] computing, and sensing. >> The strong partnership between the colleges of engineering and science continues to shape [music] our research and curriculum developments. Under our new comprehensive quantum degrees program, students will take courses from both science and engineering perspectives. Students will take part in project-based education, pushing their learning to the next level to see how concepts [music] in class are applied in the real world. >> The scale and breadth of our quantum program allows us to reach [music] vast and wide-ranging populations, including undergraduates, graduates, and working professionals. Many courses are available in one credit increments, allowing us to quickly train a well-rounded workforce. This is critical because the field is young and difficult to predict, necessitating a workforce with a diverse skill set, not only in quantum, but also in semiconductors, microelectronics, and optical technologies. >> We're home to 65 faculty members [music] in the Purdue Quantum Science and Engineering Institute. And Purdue is ranked among the top 20 universities [music] for quantum computing. >> At Purdue, we are persistently exploring promising aspects of quantum information science and engineering, including quantum computing, quantum communication, and quantum sensing. Our key research strengths include [music] atomic, molecular, and optical physics, as well as quantum control, quantum materials, and [music] nanophotonics. >> Our faculty and students are exploring nature at all scales, including the quantum realm. >> Together, we're pushing the boundaries of quantum science and technology >> from the lab into the real world. >> With the emergence of this new quantum industry, a quantum aware and quantum proficient workforce is needed. >> Experiential learning [music] is our number one priority. That's why we offer quantum-focused summer schools [music] and study abroad experiences in quantum computing. Help us take the next giant [music] leap at nanoscale. Learn more about the comprehensive quantum degrees program, including our new online Master of Science.
