Promises of The Old Covenant vs New Covenant?

What are the promises of the new covenant? Huh, that's a good question. How do they or do the promises compared to the promises of the old covenant? So, let's do this. Let's have class participation time, shall we? What would you say, guys, are the promises of the new covenant? And what would you all say are is the outlook or the promises for the old covenant. Remember the old covenant is the only covenant that we have that is a conditional covenant. If then if you do this then that I will do that. If you don't do this then I will do that. So there are conditions to the old covenant um stipulations that if this happens then that will happen. So God is basically so if you think that's a promise that's fine. If you do this, then I promise to do that. That would be the promise. If you disobey, then I promise to do that. So, what are the promises to those people who disobey or obey in the old covenant? Let's let's start there first with the old covenant. In the old covenant, the the promises for disobeying is what? Punishment. Being put out of the land. Being put under someone else's oppressive thumb. You know, like the Assyrians and Babylonians. to be made to be slaves to to to to die. The promises would be that you would be put out of the land. The promises would be that you would even engage in horrible things, tragic things such as eating your own children, wanting to go back to Egypt and sell yourself into slavery. Those are those are some of the promise. Now if you obey then God has promised to make you a prosperous land to make your land flowing with um vegetation and food to keep you at peace. Those are the promises of the old of of the old covenant. There are serious consequences for sin and there are serious uh benefits for being ob obedient. But so what's the promise of the new covenant? And and there is something that's vastly different in the new covenant than in the old covenant. So let's go to the old covenant and let's see in the old co during the old covenant him talk about the new covenant. Where can we go to find what God is going to do the promises for the new covenant? Alicia says Jeremiah 31. Don't go you're absolutely right. I said where in Jeremiah can we go to? So let's go to Jeremiah 31. And I want to start off in verse 27. Notice what's happening. Notice the the switch. And Dutch, you'll see why I didn't go Jeremiah 31:31. 31:31 is fine, but you'll see why I didn't go there first. I'm in Jeremiah 31, but look what he says. He says, "Behold," let's make it bigger. Uh, otherwise, Grandma Sheila is going to complain about the size of the font. Behold, days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with the seed of man and with the seed of beast, as I have watched over them to pluck up, to break down, to overthrow, to destroy, and to bring disaster. Now notice the shift that he makes. So I will watch over them who the house of Israel and the house of Judah. And so what he's going to do here with the house of Israel and the house of Judah is he's basically going to combine make sure that they know that they are together because what's happening now there is a separation between the northern um nation and the southern nation. So he's going to pull them together. So I will watch over them to build and to plant, declares the Lord. In those days they will not say again because they're saying now the fathers have eaten sour grapes and the children's teeth are set on edge. Why is he making this point about the the father have eaten the fathers have eaten sour grapes and the children's teeth are set on edge? Why does anyone know why he makes this statement right here? Why? That's an odd time and odd place to bring this up. Lord, why? So you guys tell me and I will wait. I will I will this time I'll wait and let you guys answer. Why would he bring up that statement there for the father? He says that the uh never again will they say that the fathers have eaten sour grapes and the children's teeth are set on edge. Why would he bring that up at that moment? I will wait. He has given us all things pertaining to life and godliness. Mhm. No, that's not the reason why he says that. No more curses. What do you mean? What do you mean, Jac Jon in Christ? What do you mean the punishment falls on the children? What do you mean the punishment falls on the children? Because previously it was a condition. What do you mean no curses? What do you mean every man will account for their own sin? There you go. Explain more. the old covenant was. Now, by the way, we're in Jeremiah 31. What's happening in Jeremiah 31? Anybody? What's happening there? Well, they are this is this is a story of them being taken into captivity. Why are they in captivity? Well, they're in captivity not because of what they've done per se, although they are wicked also, but because of what their fathers did. Their fathers did something. So now it's falling on the children. No longer will that be the case. I just said that. So Miss Goody Two Shoes um stands up in CL. I just said that. Was that you? Was that you in school? Did Did you do that in school? When you were in school, all the kids got it wrong. You got it right. And you made sure that you let everybody know that. I'm kidding. But yeah. So if you said that you're right. So they are in captivity. Why? Because of somebody else. And that was promised. Remember the question was asked, what were the promises or the results for under the old covenant? She said it's still still me. So under the old covenant, God says, you do this, I'm going to do that. As a matter of fact, even even before they started messing up, I guess they were actually messing up in Deuteronomy. He promises that this is going to happen. and you guys are going to be put out of the land because of your disobedience. So now he says those days are are are leaving. The time will come when everyone will die for his own iniquity. Each man who eats now. So so this so this u process this is this is only for the nation of Israel. That doesn't mean that other people's sins can't affect you, right? Somebody can go into a building and and set it on fire. That will affect a lot of people. We're talking about how God is going to meet out punishment for sin. We saw that with Ai and Achen. Achin steals from um of the spoils from Ai and takes some stuff and puts it under his under his tent. And so men for the first time get killed in battle fighting for God. Like what happened? What happened? And Jesus I mean Jesus the Lord says uh there's sin in the camp. So AI is is is put to death and his family. That's going to pass. But everyone will die for his own iniquity. Each man who eats the sour grapes, his teeth will be set on edge. And now let's continue. Look what he says. Behold, days are coming, declares the Lord. When I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, with the house of Judah, not like the covenant which I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand out of out of the land of Egypt. my covenant which they broke although I was a husband to them declares the Lord but this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel in those days. So remember so now we're looking at the promises for the new covenant everything that he's saying if you if you disagree with this or if you apply it differently then then that's really on you. He's telling you what's going to happen. I will put my laws within their heart. Amen. I will put my laws within their heart and on their heart I will write it. That's completely different than what it was like under the old covenant. Under the new covenant, he is going to do what? This is another reason why you can say there was no regeneration in the old covenant. Now he's going to do something different. He's going to put it on their heart unlike what it was under the old covenant. And uh I will be their God and they shall be my people. They will not teach again each man his neighbor and each man his brother, saying, "Know the Lord, for they will all know me from the least of them to the greatest." What also is he ending? He's ending this need for you to have to go through somebody else to know the Lord. You can know the Lord for yourself. You can come before the Lord the Lord boldly. Unlike then you couldn't every everybody couldn't just go before the Lord under the old covenant. But in the new covenant, we can. Now, there's something or should I say somebody who is conspicuously absent because here he's talking about who? He's talking about Israel. By the way, while you all are thinking about what or who is conspicuously absent here, we can go and see while you're thinking about that, I want to show you something else. He says, "For I will forgive their iniquity and their sin I will remember no more." Wait a second. That's also different, is it not? He says, "I will remember their sin no more under the old covenant." Will God remember your sin? Yes, he will in fact remember your sin under the old covenant and hold it against you. Under the new covenant, I will not remember your sins anymore and hold them against you. Thus says the Lord something else. Thus says the Lord, who gives sun for light by day, and the fixed order of the moon and the stars for light by night, who stirs up the seas so that its waves uh roar, the Lord of hosts is his name. If the fixed order departs from before me, declares the Lord, then the offspring of Israel also will cease from being a nation. So another thing, another byproduct of this is that what God will and will not allow to happen to Israel, right? So one of the promises that Israel will always be a nation before the Lord. Well, what up what's up with that, God? As a matter of fact, if I just go and turn on my my u Jewish TV and I look at I look at Israel, they don't look like they want to serve you at all. And they don't. So this is where God is going to fix something. Remember, he said, "I'm going to do something to their heart so that they will know me and I will remember their sins no more." Well, Israel is engaged in sin. They live in sin, right? So, he's going to do something to fix that. Now, I asked, who or what is conspicuously absent? You're absolutely right. The Gentiles. So, how does this affect us? Well, remember what is necessary for Israel to become part of the household of God? Does anybody remember? And I want you to think specifically of throw me some verses by the way if you can. Does anybody know what is what has to happen in order for Israel to be saved? Well, thank you for typing quickly. Yes, belief. But think back to a couple passages. As a matter of fact, let's go over here also. Um, uh, let's see if I can type correctly. Dog gone it. It's almost like you're in the New Testament version of my mind cuz you're right. Now, Romans 11, but specifically think Romans Romans 11:25, but before that, Romans 11:11. Romans 11:11 speaks about this jealousy that has to happen for Israel. Right? So, let's where do we see that? Deuteronomy 32 16- 21. So, let's go to 21. They they who Israel have made me jealous with what is not God. They have provoked me to anger with their idols. So I will make them jealous with those who are not a people. Who's that? Us. I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation. That's us. By the way, because of that, what happens to them? See Jeremiah 32 or Jeremiah, them being in captivity. So because of all these things that are happening, and he spells it out in Deuteronomy and Leviticus as well, the punishments is going to happen. and because you've done these things, I'm going to also make you jealous with somebody else. Well, we are the somebody else. And so, what does he say? As a matter of fact, he says to them in Hosea chapter 2, notice what he says. He's talking about how he's going to punish Israel, but he's going to bring them back. He says verse 23, chapter 2, I will sow her for myself in the land. That's Israel in the land. What land? What land will he sow Israel in in Israel? I will or Judea. I will also have compassion on her who had not obtained compassion. Um and I will say to those who were not my people, you are my people. That's us. So part of Israel becoming a nation before the Lord is us also becoming a nation. Us Gentile believers becoming a nation before the Lord. So bringing them in necessarily means bringing us in before he brings Israel in. He's going to bring us in. And we know that because listen, the uh the pause switch is on Israel, so to speak. Because he says in Isaiah 6, he said, "Go and tell the people, keep on listening, but do not perceive. Keep on looking but do not understand. Render the hearts of these people insensitive, their ears dull, and their eyes dim. Otherwise, they might see with their eyes and hear." So all those things are going to happen. All of those things. So whatever he's promised for Israel, he's promised for us. So what are the promises that he made? The promises is that he's going to put his laws, his teachings, all those things on our heart. He's promised unlike under the old, he's promised never to bring up our sins or hold our sins against us. Amen. And so if he's promising them peace, he's promising us peace. If he's promising them access to the Lord, he's promising us access to the Lord. We can all go before the Lord. Whoever is in Christ, you can go before the Lord for yourself. No one can make you know the Lord. Now, we can write books. We can do lessons. We can have the greatest sermons. That won't cause you to know the Lord. It might cause you to know about the Lord, but it won't cause you to know the Lord. So, one of the other promises is this that he that you will be able to know the Lord. You'll know the Lord. You'll have peace. You'll have security and never have to worry about the ramifications of sin. Unlike the promises of the old covenant, you mess up, you're in trouble. Amen.
