Video summary
The video provides a comprehensive match preview for the upcoming Carabao Cup fixture between Preston North End and Everton at Deepdale, highlighting the unique appeal of playing at this historic venue which retains its original name without corporate sponsorship. While the draw initially sparked excitement about potential progression to the next round, the focus has now shifted entirely to the tactical challenges ahead. The hosts acknowledge that while a home victory against a Championship side like Preston would be ideal for Everton early in the Premier League season, the reality of facing a determined opponent away from home makes this a significantly trickier contest than anticipated. The discussion emphasizes that despite Everton's superior status, the nature of cup football means they cannot afford complacency, especially given their recent form and the need to build momentum following their Saturday win.
A significant portion of the conversation revolves around manager David Moyes' recent comments regarding the importance of winning trophies versus staying in the league, which drew criticism from the hosts for seemingly downplaying the significance of cup competition. The speakers argue that such remarks are particularly annoying coming from a Premier League manager who is not under relegation pressure, as winning these tournaments provides crucial pathways to European football and additional revenue. In contrast, the analysis suggests that Championship managers like Paul Heckingbottom at Preston will view this match with much greater seriousness, as beating a Premier League team offers vital bragging rights and financial relief. The hosts question whether Championship fans still care deeply about cup runs given the difficulty of the schedule, but conclude that for Preston, defeating Everton is essential to kickstart their season and prove they can compete against top-tier opposition.
Tactical discussions dominate the latter part of the preview, with detailed debates on how many squad changes each manager should make before kickoff. The hosts express concern over the risks associated with making wholesale changes too early in the season, citing previous instances where Everton struggled after rotating a large portion of their squad against Wolves. They argue that while players like Tyler Dibling deserve opportunities due to their preseason participation, disrupting the chemistry of a unit that has not played together yet could be counterproductive. The consensus leans towards making only subtle adjustments, perhaps two or three changes in areas like the wide positions or goalkeeping, rather than overhauling the backline, to ensure team cohesion and minimize the risk of poor performances that could undermine the team's confidence and fan support.
Ultimately, the video concludes by stressing that regardless of the number of changes made, the primary objective for both teams is to secure a positive result to maintain their momentum heading into the busy weekend schedule against Bournemouth. The hosts reiterate that Everton should win comfortably if they field a cohesive side, but they must prove they have enough depth and fire in their players to handle the pressure of the cup tie. They encourage fans to engage with the channel's upcoming starting eleven show and post-match reaction videos, inviting viewers to share their opinions on potential lineups and the importance of respecting the competition. The overarching message is that while managers may prioritize league form, the opportunity to win a trophy and gain European qualification remains a vital goal that should not be dismissed lightly by either club or their supporters.

Hello, welcome to Toffee TV. It is the
match preview. Preston North End versus
Everton in round two of the Carabal Cup
>> played at Deep Dale. Still called Deep
Dale. Hasn't got a silly
>> sponsored name. Yeah, Deepale. Fair play
to them.
>> Fame at the root.
>> Fair play. Although
>> they did play the first round at this a
park. It's just
>> And when the draw was made, some people
got excited and thought they were going
back to go for the next.
>> They did. They did.
>> A taste of the medicine being in the OA
end. That would have been interesting.
>> Yeah. That
>> that would have been very interesting
>> being in the corner.
>> Everton has been in the corner and
finding out why people.
>> Yeah.
>> But they're not. And it is a Preston and
Everton face.
I suppose on paper looks like a trickier
game than what what you want. You do
want it at home Mansfield Town like
that's what you want. So forever to get
Jordan away in the champion against the
Championship team in the first week of
the Premier League season. Great.
>> You know it's it could have been a
little bit easier, couldn't it? Really?
>> Even them at home would have been
better, wouldn't it? Obviously, but
you're right. Could have been me too
shied away 100% or or at home. Um, and
it will be tricky because obviously
they're going to make big changes from
what they did. I mean, the last round in
the cup, the team's totally different
than the league game, so they'll make
big changes. But the big changes gives
their lads the opportunity to stake a
claim, doesn't it?
>> Unless their managers minds closed off
like other managers minds are. Um,
you've got an opportunity, haven't you?
as a player who's not in the squad, you
got an opportunity to come in and and
hopefully that's what Everton's players
who who come in will do have got the
opportunity to go, look, I am here. I
deserve a go. That's what you've got to
be wary of this early on in the season
as well. You haven't got any rhythm
going. You know, we won the game
Saturday. Hopefully, we can carry it on
tomorrow.
>> Do you think do you think they care this
early on? Like le championship managers,
do you think they do you know what I
mean? Just just the way football is. I
mean, we've just listened to David
Moyes's press conference and even he
sounded so unconvinced about it. He was
like, he has asked a question about how
important is to win a trophy and he
basically said, well, before giving Joe
Thomas a bit of a hard time about it, he
went, well, it's not as important to
stay in the league.
>> He did say though,
>> words to those effect,
>> he did say that. Yeah, I think J is just
stupid when I heard that question.
>> No, I know. But but what I mean by I
know what a question is there just to to
just to get an answer back opportunity.
>> Um but I thank you
>> and when when Premier League managers
are saying when a Premier League manager
who's supposed to be the manager of a
club that is supposed to be sort of not
really in danger but not really you know
a Champions League team. So Europe is a
really
>> Mo annoying you at the moment.
>> I found that feels like
>> I found that a really annoying answer
though. I felt like felt like that was
picking an argument for no reason. He it
feels like him and Joy
after the press conference was done just
after he's won on the first game of the
season to throw a question back like
that. I felt like so so if a manager of
a Premier League team who uh sort of
looked at it being in no real danger but
no sort of can't look at this and god
we we want to win this because this
means you're getting into Europe and
then you can go up and get into the
Champions League. I think that's the
answer Joe might have been looking for.
So if a Premier League manager is
looking at like that, what is a
Championship manager looking at who
who's also maybe in you know who's also
Preston,
you know, maybe looked at as a
relegation team this season in
Championship maybe. So how how would
they be looking at it?
>> It's a tough it's a tough one to answer
for them. I mean last year they were the
first half of the season they looked
like they were going to be in the
playoffs. They're the poor Harrison
Armson left and they trailed off of it.
So listen, I don't know. I do like Paul
Hecken Bottom as a manager. So I don't I
think that Preston will be fine. Um but
yeah, it won't be his number one
priority. They'll obviously it's a free
for them, isn't it? They're just playing
a Premier League team. They're more
concerned with getting the league form
right. Everton should win. So therefore,
if they get beaten
bottom and be like, "Well, it's a
Premier League team, you know, and they
beat us. That's that's so they should
>> that if they get a positive result then
it kickstarts them doesn't it in some
respects but you that many changes
>> it doesn't have the what it does is it
gives the fans a boost but it doesn't
really give the team a boost that made
the last
>> I wor not worry I wonder whether their
fans or or fans in the championship
actually care anymore in terms of like
when the league you know cuz it's such
early days of the league season like and
there's so many games. Do they start
caring about beating a team in the
Premier League like now or do they you
know or is it like if you get to the
quarterfinals then you beat but do but
do they but I don't know if they do
though I I just don't
>> if Evan got Man City in the next round
at home. No, that's that's us. I'm
talking about a championship team
because I just I just don't
>> I don't know if the I think the dream is
that far away now for a lot of clubs,
including Premier League teams
>> that I wonder whether these these fans
actually care anymore because it just
seems so far away they care. Regardless,
beating Everton will be a big thing for
them.
>> But in the Northwest, we're quite
localish, aren't we? Really, we're a
Premier League team. They beat us. Not
saying it's the be all and end all for
them to like FA Cup fifth round and you
you know like when Southampton beat
Arsenal last season in the quarters and
got to Wembley.
>> It's obviously that's different when
you're playing a team like that. I think
I think Arsenal beat Preston. Do
>> you think they care if they get beat by
Everton?
>> Probably not. No.
>> Yeah, that's probably more what I was
probably they probably will just be like
well they should beat us Premier League
and it'll just be relaxed by it. But
still think they'd like to beat Ev. From
our perspective, we it's about momentum
building now, you know, and I think got
a good good result Saturday. We've got a
real tough game at the weekend against
Bournemouth. You keep everything just
ticking over. We go to deep tomorrow,
get a positive result. It keeps
everything ticking over, doesn't it?
Well, I think from that point of view, I
mean certainly we we know last season
again last season at this stage we were
playing at home against and you don't
mind change making the changes but
obviously then we went to Wolves and we
made a lot of changes.
So for in that instance because this
game is away and it's against tougher
tougher opposition than we faced last
year. What what are you looking for in
terms of like making changes? Then
again, I think I said on the final word,
there's an argument for him making 10
changes, [music] but to keep everyone up
to speed at the squad, but that's too
risky cuz how many times do we see it?
We've seen it. We've seen it a lot of
times over the years where we've made
that many changes and you should be able
to make that many changes because
they're all Premier League footballers,
but they come in, they don't look like a
team cuz why would they? They don't play
together
>> and you end up struggling, you know, and
that Wolves game was really poor. It was
really poor. We had a little bit of
momentum and we went to Wolves and we
made the changes and they they made as
many but [music] they lad their lad took
it on, didn't he? And won the game and
we were all over the place. So we've
we've been witnessed to that a few
times. Remember Norwich at Goodson a few
years ago under Kumman and he made 10
changes. We got most of them in the
'90s.
>> Loads of them. But what I'm saying is
when you make wholesale changes. So
personally
>> the goalkeeper plays for me. Pigford. I
wouldn't change Pford. Uh I think maybe
but I'd have Jordan in goal. Uh maybe
five or six because you have to I feel
like you have to make that many changes
because I think you've got to give Tyler
Dibling deserves to play Ben and Johnson
getting a start at the minute and you
want him up to speed in case you need
him. Um midfield is I said midfield's
quite a tricky one to change because we
haven't got the numbers
>> really at the minute. Um maybe not maybe
four maybe four changes but I would me
personally I'd have I think it'll be
keen in O'Brien you see and that's an
interesting one with Jake after what's
come out in the last 24 hours that you
know it's definitely being pushed by
Jake side that he he wants to leave
>> if he's not going to be guaranteed 13
football. So it's an interesting one.
>> Yeah.
>> I'd only make three myself. I'd make
three. I I
>> I don't think there's any need for
changes personally. I think this early
in the season I don't think there's any
need for changes. I think
>> maybe two or three three four are an
absolute push.
>> Brandweight I think definitely would
come out to the team because I think
>> as you're managing and you're looking
after them
>> and I think you know you're looking for
the long longer term I think he has to
come out and then it's a flip of a coin
going for a few others the wide areas
maybe the left back but I'd only I'd
only make them. I think this should be
this should be part of the process of
and then you try and win the game and
you try and get subs on early and you
give them a run and you try and get your
James Garner on and give him half an
hour and step him up and and Brenon
Johnson exactly the same. Let's let's
not forget he didn't have preseason. So
let's not worry let's not go let's not
worry too much about like saying he must
start whereas Tyler Dibland did have a
preseason probably does deserve to start
>> but I would keep it mostly as it is cuz
I just think it's a case of getting
through
>> and then you have brought in two or
three and you don't get that thing of in
the next round when you're making
wholesale changes
>> um and you've got people knocking on the
door but I I just wonder I wonder how
David Moyes thinks about
>> that's what I'm saying personally when
you look at it you can make the you want
to win games so you're right? He
probably make three at the most. But I'm
looking at him and the way he'll be
looking at his squad and think, well,
there's an opportunity to build other
players fitness levels up. So therefore,
I it's all about trust, isn't it? And
we're talking about substitutes as well
and everything.
>> You get the lads levels up and they're
playing games, then does he trust them
more with game?
>> Football managers always like you you
said it before about being playing
together. football ma football managers
will and we've seen this on loads of
different managers will will always go
that team is good enough to beat but
it's like no no those individuals were
good enough to beat that team but when
you've just packaged the team together
>> a starting 11 that have never played
together before like why would you think
that
>> they're going to go out there and and
put a performance together where you
know
>> and I think that's more the more the
case of when players are just not
playing together or haven't played
together that's the problem isn't it and
that's why I'd keep most of the team
together and make those little subtle
changes cuz I think I think you know
Everton should win this game and if
Everton was to play the team that they
played on Saturday they would win they
will win the game but it's when you
start making those little change too
many changes and then and I just wonder
whether David Moyes even worries about
like how it affects
the fans and what the fans have got to
say and I I don't I don't really think
he cares or and and as a manager I
suppose you you shouldn't care because
that's your to to be above all that. But
that that will make it interesting. I
just I just think making wholesale
changes would be would be just
>> counterproductive at this stage.
>> If you look at I mean we've got their
form on obviously James put on there. I
mean you know in the championship Bolton
beat them day one. Wolves beat them last
week. You know they beat um Huddersfield
on penalties at Gooderson didn't he? And
obviously
>> we're beating Stockport in a friendly
and Bradford. So they haven't had a
great start themselves and he will make
changes. So it's whether or not David
Moyes looks and things just get through
it. Yeah.
>> Take the the sort of sting out of anyone
moaning by, you know, making four, like
you said, four maximum. Get the job done
cuz a lot of fans will say the same. Get
the job done by an hour or so and then
then bring the changes on.
And there will be those obviously
there'll be those players
>> that are close and it's a flip of a coin
who you pick you know in the team and
you mentioned one before like Dibblin.
Um
then feel like you said pick yourself
you there aren't too. The funny thing is
there aren't too many. You might look at
right back and go well I was thinking
maybe I might put someone else at right
back. So then do you put I don't you
know off top of me head I'm not really
think Patterson. Yeah. new signing. Um,
but apart from that, I just I I don't
look at too many and think, oh, you
deserve
>> the two center backs will be Keen and
O'Brien.
>> I don't think Keen should play. I think
O'Brien should I don't think Keen should
play. I think it should be
>> and he name checked them in the press.
>> I don't think Keen and O'Brien should
start. But I but again, they're two that
you can sort of bring in and you know
they'll they'll be they'll be all right
for the most part. But then the problem
with that is then once you've made those
double chains then you're not going to
bring as in
>> cuz suddenly you've made three changes
and your right back's not a right back.
So suddenly you're looking at it and
that's that to me
>> that's why I picked one.
>> Yeah. And that to me is like sort of
where
>> I don't like that because I'd rather go
I don't want as to play cuz really out
of the players you should be playing in
a back four should be given opportunity
it's as new but then soon as you change
your back the center backs
>> you're just not bring you're not playing
as new are you? And I suppose that's the
that's the annoying part of it. But but
Everton should have enough and fans will
just hope that we just get the job done.
And it's it's one of those nights where
you just go Evan have gone got a couple
of goals, no force
>> and a through and then it's on to onto
Saturday and it's onto the next round.
And you know the problem is is David
Moyes can
say things to journalists
about how serious but football fans will
Everton fans will just go back to WSN
last year and go
>> to us you didn't show respect for the to
to that
>> to the trophy and to us
>> as a fan base and and and
>> and really apart from what one semifinal
under David Moyes. You know, I know we
got to another semi-final under Roberto
Mart, but
>> apart from that semi-final, this trophy
has been absolutely bleak for us. And we
know that if you get through in the if
you can win this, like we saw, you know,
I mean, only really Newcastle have
broken the pattern, haven't they? If you
can win this trophy and you get into
Europe, as we've said many times, it's
like once you get into Europe, we've
seen in the last few years, Palace,
Chelsea,
>> West Ham, Villa, you know, get into that
first one, go and win that
>> and then you're into the you're into,
you know, then you push on to the uh
Europa League and that the moment seems
like the most viable way of getting
>> but also not only the most viable way
getting to the Champions League, but
opportunities to win trophies as well.
And as David Moyes said, expand your
squad, start using your squad.
>> And you can only you I think you the
manager was right to be asked that
question because ultimately
>> there's no proof that we've really took
this trophy very seriously. But what
>> in our in our lifetimes, you know,
>> what if we had a couple of semis in a
final? Yeah,
>> that's it. That's it. One final, you
know, that was 40 years ago. We were
robbed. But there you go. Yeah, the
manager can say whatever. Fans will pick
whatever they want out of it.
>> I know, but come on. He had an argument
with the journalist over it.
>> No, no, but I'm saying but if he either
said I'm saying it 100% seriously and he
makes eight changes tomorrow, people
will go, "What's he on about?" Or if he
says, "No, I'm not really bothered about
it."
>> Do you know what I mean? It's a proof.
Everything's all about results really.
And he's he's got a show. He's he's he
values it by making sure we win the
game. And that's what we should do
tomorrow regardless of the changes both
teams make. Everton playing the Premier
League, Weston playing the Championship.
So, and I know it's decided on the
night. Our players coming in have got to
really go out and want to win that game.
And
>> it'll be a tough game cuz cuz it will
be. But we should have enough
>> and we have to we have to prove that
we've got enough and then
>> it's about, you know, building onto that
squad then. But he he'll only
>> he's got to demonstrate it by making
sure the lads are fired up, ready to go
and do it. Yeah.
>> I know. That's absolutely absolutely.
There you go. Let us know your thoughts
in the comments on how you're feeling
ahead of this game. How many changes
should be made and those changes would
you like to see brought in to the side?
