With an ongoing heat advisory throughout
the state, the risk for heat stroke and
heat exhaustion goes up. Those working
labor-intensive outdoor jobs should be
mindful of symptoms and prepared to be
out in hot weather for long periods of
time. Pikeville Fire Department
Lieutenant Charles Sexton gives us more
information.

should be doing it when it's this hot.
Our bodies are not designed to work in
excess heat like this.
Um some things that you can do to help
mitigate problems that may arise is
hydration. Days with before, not the day
of, days before um taking frequent
breaks.
Um working in the cool if you can, just
not going outside in general. If you can
change things up and not not work when
it's real hot, that'd be the best case
scenario.
Um knowing your limitations, what you
can do, what you cannot do. Just being
smart and using your head.

providing them with water. It's possible
for either to cause long-term issues.
>> Get them to a cool place. Um get as much
clothing off as they will let you take
off of them.
Um cool them as much as possible. Not
like ice ice cold, but rapid cooling
them. Uh give them sips of water, sports
drinks, things like that. Just The main
thing is get them out of the heat.
That's the best thing you can do. It
seems like in the past few years it's
becoming more frequent. Uh people are
working outside longer. Um they
cuz they have to. Uh they have to work
in these conditions. Um sometimes it's
more, sometimes it lasts. It depends on
how hot it is, depends on the type of
work you do.
Um but it seems like it's possibly
becoming a little bit more frequent as
of late.
