Video summary
Lee Vinsel invites attendees to the Association for Research Libraries 2026 President's Institute in Chicago, where the central theme focuses on creating beneficial and meaningful change amidst growing resource constraints and difficult circumstances. He introduces a key concept he shares with his co-author called "innovation speak," which describes the danger of becoming distracted by flashy new innovations that are often unsustainable. These superficial trends can cause organizations to lose sight of their core objectives, leading them away from what truly matters most in their mission.
The primary argument presented is the critical need to maintain focus on fundamental goals rather than chasing every emerging trend or shiny object. Vinsel warns that without this discipline, there is a significant risk that valuable resources will be wasted on initiatives that do not deliver lasting impact. Instead of getting sidetracked by temporary solutions, leaders must prioritize strategies that ensure progress aligns with essential values and long-term needs, ensuring that the organization remains grounded in its purpose even when facing external pressures or limited budgets.
To address these challenges effectively, Vinsel emphasizes the importance of moving forward together so that no one is left behind during times of change. This collaborative approach ensures that innovation serves as a tool for inclusion rather than exclusion, keeping all stakeholders engaged and supported throughout the transition process. By fostering unity and shared purpose, institutions can navigate uncertain environments more resiliently while still achieving meaningful outcomes that benefit everyone involved in their work.
Ultimately, Vinsel expresses his hope that participants will join him to learn from one another and enjoy a productive experience at the institute. He looks forward to engaging with all attendees through conversation and collaboration, believing that collective learning will yield significant insights for tackling complex issues. The event aims not only to provide practical guidance on sustaining innovation but also to create an environment where meaningful change can be realized together despite current limitations.
