People Planet Purpose Peace and Prosperity: Gerd Leonhard explains the 5Ps (2026 compilation)
Watch on YouTubeVideo summary
Gerd Leonhard argues that the traditional economic paradigm focused solely on profit and growth has reached its breaking point, necessitating a shift toward a new framework defined by five core pillars: People, Planet, Purpose, Peace, and Prosperity. He highlights that under the old capitalist model, technological advancements like artificial intelligence were often used to cut costs by displacing human workers, but this approach is now unsustainable as we face a crisis of trust within democracies. The speaker emphasizes that solving practical scientific challenges such as water scarcity, food security, and disease requires a fundamental reinvention of our economy that integrates humanity with the environment rather than treating them as opposing forces.
The urgency of this transition is underscored by the dangerous geopolitical discussions surrounding AI, where nations are debating whether to create an "AI Manhattan Project" to dominate the global race for artificial intelligence. Leonhard warns that in such a competitive scenario, the only true winner would be the technology itself, potentially leading to catastrophic outcomes similar to nuclear proliferation. To counter this destructive trajectory, he proposes the concept of a universal basic capital fund, drawing inspiration from Alaska's oil dividend system where citizens receive money based on resource production. He suggests redirecting the trillions of dollars in potential AI revenue into such a fund to support individuals engaged in unpaid but valuable societal contributions like raising children, performing social work, or creating art.
Ultimately, Leonhard asserts that we must move beyond the binary choices between socialism, capitalism, communism, and populism because the critical question is no longer about which political ideology wins, but whether humanity chooses to build a good future or a bad one. He notes that younger generations are increasingly unwilling to work for corporations that harm people or the planet, signaling a cultural shift that demands ethical accountability. The path forward requires cultivating understanding, compassion, and resilience to rebuild trust among citizens, ensuring that the future of technology serves human flourishing rather than merely driving corporate profits or state control.

>> Show me the incentive, I'll show you the
outcome. American incentive, corporate
profit. European incentive, humanity.
Chinese incentive, state control. Under
the old paradigm of additional
capitalism, if you are going to use
technology like AI to reduce the cost,
you fire all humans. We're reaching this
kind of collapsing point. Our old
economic logic, whatever you want to
call it, profit and growth, has timed
out. Now we have to think about a larger
story. People, planet, purpose, peace,
and prosperity. The biggest factor today
is the loss of trust. How do we run a
democracy when we don't trust each
other? Understanding, compassion,
resilience. This is how we're going to
reinvent our economy of the future. We
can solve practical problems, water,
food, disease, space traveling. Those
are scientific, technological
challenges. But how can we have a great
economy when we have no planet? Economy
and the planet is not either or. When I
look back at my paradigm, it was about
getting ahead, being more prosperous.
This paradigm is shifting today. You
talk to a 35-year-old person, they will
not work for a company that does bad
things. I've recently expanded from the
four P's to the five so that it includes
peace in the light of discussion about
nuclear rearmament and so on. Do we have
to have a Manhattan Project for AI? Can
Can you believe this? This is an actual
discussion in the United States. A
Manhattan Project for AI. That's like
saying we've had two bombs and now we're
going to do it again so we can have a AI
bomb. The only winner in the race to
artificial intelligence to dominate the
world in the lottery and business terms
is the AI itself.
So we have to think about a different
approach. We have to think about
something like a universal basic capital
fund. And you'd be surprised how that
would work, putting money from business
proceedings into a fund for the
citizens. Every citizen in Alaska gets
money from the production of oil. You
call that socialist, I call it
capitalist because it makes people into
little capitalists because they're
participating. We're talking about
trillions of AI revenue per year. What
do we do with that money? We can use
that money to redistribute to people who
want to do something what they don't get
paid for. Like having children, doing
social work, writing a book, making a
movie. Now we have of course movement
against the five P's: people, planet,
purpose, peace, and prosperity. The
antidote to the good future is the bad
future. Taking you back to the past. If
we want a better logic, we have to go
beyond socialism, capitalism, communism,
populism. Because right now the only
thing that matters is you're going to
make a good future or you're going to
make a bad future.
