Pegula vs Anisimova | WTA Cincinnati 2026 QF | Tennis Talk Preview
Watch on YouTubeVideo summary
The upcoming quarterfinal match at the 2026 WTA Cincinnati tournament features a blockbuster showdown between Jessica Pegula and Amanda Anisimova, two players who have both been performing exceptionally well throughout the week. Anisimova entered the event as the ninth seed and navigated her path to the semifinals with relative ease, defeating Sonmez in the second round and the 17th-seeded opponent in the third after a comeback from a set down. Her most significant hurdle came in the fourth round against Elena Rybakina, the Wimbledon champion and sixth seed, which she overcame in straight sets to secure her spot in the quarterfinals.
In contrast, Pegula arrived as the third seed and faced slightly tougher competition on her way to this final four appearance. She defeated Walter in the second round and Navaro, the 25th seed, in a tight third-round match that required a comeback after losing the first set. Her journey culminated in a hard-fought fourth-round victory against Clara Tauson, the 15th seed, where she had to fight back from being down a set to win in three sets and advance. This matchup carries significant historical weight, as Pegula has defeated Anisimova in five consecutive previous meetings, including a recent victory in Dubai, establishing her dominance in their rivalry until now.
For Anisimova to secure her first-ever win against Pegula, she will need to replicate the solid, emotionally stable performance she displayed against Rybakina, where she dominated without showing frustration or getting upset by external factors. The key to her success lies in bullying Pegula around the baseline and maintaining that level of composure under pressure. Conversely, if Pegula is to maintain her winning streak, she must continue her established strategy while focusing heavily on defense, as Anisimova has proven capable of elevating her game significantly when playing with confidence and stability.
The match promises to be particularly interesting given the momentum Anisimova has gained this week by beating both Yulia Putintseva and Rybakina, which may have restored her belief in her ability to defeat Pegula. While Pegula knows exactly how to beat Anisimova based on their history, the American challenger has started to close the gap in this rivalry and could potentially pull off an upset if she can sustain her current form. The speaker predicts a three-set contest for Anisimova, suggesting that her recent confidence boost might finally allow her to break through Pegula's defense, though fans are encouraged to weigh in on who they believe will take home the victory.

Jessica Bagula versus Amander and
Isisamova. There's a blockbuster match
up over in Cincinnati for 2026. And both
fighters are playing really well this
week. And Isamova entered the tournament
as a number nine seed. We're going to
buy in the first round. In the second
round, she take on Sonmez. There's no
problem getting through straight. 6263.
In the third round, she take on the 17th
seed. This is the battle. After dropping
the first set would fight back to win
4664 62. In the fourth round, she take
on Noska, the Wimbledon champion, and
six seed. There's no problem for
Inisimova getting to in straight 61 64
to advance to the quarterfinals. Gula
entered the tournament as a number three
seed. We got a buy in the first round.
In the second round, she'll take on
Walter. There's no problem getting
through straight 6362. In the third
round, she take on Navaro, the 25th
seed. And for a close first set, we get
in straight 7562. In the fourth round,
she take on Casta, the 15th seed. And
after going up a set in a break, she'd
have to fight to win in three 62 4675 to
advance to the quarterfinals. These were
played five times of four with Pagula
winning all five matches, including a
match this year in Dubai where Pagoula
end up winning in three. So Anisimova
has starting to get a little bit closer
in this rivalry. But overall, it's been
Pagoula who gets the better of this one.
If Anisimova is going to win this one,
she needs to play like she did against
Noska. She played so solid against Noska
and just really like emotionally stable
as well. She didn't, you know, sort of
get angry or get upset by anything and
she really just dominated. So she needs
to bully Pagula around the baseline if
she is going to get her first win here.
If Pagoula is going to win this one, she
needs to just keep doing what she's
doing. She obviously knows how to beat
Anissova. She's done it five times in a
row and she really does need to defend
well because if Anisimova does rock up
and play the way that she did against
Noskavar, she's going to have to run a
lot for Gula. So really needs to defend
well. Fun match up here. This is going
to be really interesting especially if
Anamova can keep that form that she's
been gaining this week. I'm going to go
with Anisamova in a three setter. I
reckon she might get the upset if that's
even an upset. I guess it is cuz she's
never won before against Bula. But yeah,
I'm going to go with Nissova in a three
setter. the way she played against Noska
and the confidence that I think she
gained by beating Yala and Noska. I
reckon she might get the first win here
against Bugula. But let me know in the
comments below who's going to win this
one.
