Parkinson’s Disease: Recognising the Signs and Understanding the Condition
Watch on YouTubeVideo summary
Parkinson's disease is a common neurological condition that typically affects older adults, characterized by specific cardinal symptoms that serve as the primary basis for diagnosis. The most recognizable sign is tremors, which often begin in the hands or lower limbs and become more noticeable when the patient is at rest rather than in motion. Alongside these involuntary shaking movements, patients frequently experience stiffness, describing a sensation where their hands feel difficult to use or where their legs seem stuck to the ground while walking, significantly impacting their mobility and daily comfort.
Beyond tremors and rigidity, the condition manifests through a distinct slowing of physical activities known as bradykinesia. This reduction in speed affects various routine tasks, making actions like buttoning shirts, eating with a spoon, or dressing oneself take considerably longer than usual. The impact extends to speech and fine motor skills as well, where a person's voice may become softer and lower in pitch, while handwriting often deteriorates into small, shabby scribbles that are hard to read, illustrating how the disease gradually hampers everyday functionality.
The progression of symptoms eventually leads to a loss of balance, creating a dangerous tendency for patients to fall easily and instilling a deep fear of falling that can further limit their independence. When an elderly individual exhibits this combination of resting tremors, muscle stiffness, slowed movement, voice changes, and balance issues, it is crucial not to ignore these signs as they are indicative of Parkinson's disease. The video concludes with a clear recommendation that anyone experiencing these cardinal features should promptly consult a neurologist for proper evaluation and management.

Hello friends, I am Dr. Bushan Zooshi.
I'm practicing neurologist at Manipal
Hospital, Kari. This is a video
regarding awareness about Parkinson
disease. Parkinson disease is common
neurological condition. Usually it
occurs in old age and the cardinal
features main symptoms on the basis of
which we diagnose patient of Parkinson's
are tremors. Tremors usually starts with
hand or lower limb leg and they are more
prominent when patient is resting. Then
stiffness patient usually complain that
he he finds his hand to be uh difficult
to use or while walking he they
experience as if their legs are stuck to
the ground. So these are the symptoms of
stiffness. Then slowness is the third
feature where activity becomes slow.
Buttoning, unbuttoning, eating with the
spoon becomes slow. Dressing, changing
clothes becomes slow. Voice even goes
down. writing become shabby and small.
So slowness and last is loss of balance.
So easy fall, tendency to fall, fear of
fall. If all these cardinal features are
present and you are elderly patient, you
should consult your neurologist. Thank
you.
