In this module, we will be talking about
couple of non-probability sampling
techniques.
Since we already know that
non-probability sampling is a sampling
technique where the samples are gathered
with predictable chances of selection.
Moreover, when all individuals in the
population are not given equal chances
of being selected as a sample.
Here we will talk about convenience
sampling and snowball sampling.
Convenience sampling as by its name, it
says it's convenience.
And this is the type of sampling
methodology where we use the most
convenient sample
to the researcher. And that's part of
the reason that it's called the
non-probability sampling.
In this method, the first available
primary data source is used for research
without having any additional
requirements.
Moreover,
convenience sampling method can be
applied by stopping random people and
asking them questionnaire questions.
This is apparently one of the most
commonly used sampling methodology out
there.
So, in
convenience sampling, even if there are
different groups of people around us,
we will only ask the questions from the
individuals who are just in a very close
circle to us.
Who are more most convenient for us to
approach.
Convenience sampling is simple.
It's easier.
It takes lesser time. It's
cost-effective.
But the biggest problem that come with
the convenience sampling is the problem
of selection bias.
Because we make our personal judgments
to select the people around us.
Like many people
conduct their surveys using convenience
sampling when they only reach out to
their Facebook friends.
One should know that one can have the
Facebook friends which are very close
allies and they are having the similar
characteristics most of the time.
So, it it won't give you a whole diverse
opinion.
Moreover, one of the very
crucial
part of our sampling procedures is that
they help us to generalize our reserves
coming from the sample for the
population.
But, in convenience sampling
we do not or we are unable to generalize
our reserve with a whole lot of
confidence in in our results due to the
high sampling error.
The other sampling methodology is
snowball sampling.
As by its name
one can figure out
that as a snowball moves down the hill
it keeps growing as it rolls down.
The snowball sampling works the same
way.
Where
in the first step we identify potential
subjects in the population.
And then
we ask those individuals to recruit
other individuals which may like to be
the part of our
sample.
Snowball sampling is usually done for
the vulnerable populations or for the
populations which are very rare or maybe
which are just hidden populations.
In those situations
we assume that the people from the rare
populations they do know each other.
Hence, we use the snowball sampling.
In snowball sampling one can locate the
hidden population.
Moreover, locating people of a specific
population
and the other advantage is it's a low
cost and less time because you're asking
your respondent to get you introduced to
the next respondent. You don't have to
search them by yourself.
If one has to search individuals by
themselves, it's going to take a lot of
time and a lot of other resources. But
asking the already existing participants
to get you introduced to the other
participants, it can help reduce the
time and cost.
But there are few disadvantages.
The first one is the community bias.
The people in that specific community
may know each other, but one cannot go
beyond into the people of the same
characteristics which are under study,
but they're far away and they may not
know
everyone out there.
Another disadvantage is that it's
non-random
because there's there's personal
judgment involved.
Most of the time, the population size is
unknown.
And moreover,
there's lack of control over sampling
methodology because it's more driven by
the individual, the participants, but
it's not being controlled by the
researcher.
Non-probability sampling methodologies
come with huge bias, which is one of the
very
big drawback
of the non-probability sampling
methodologies.
And there are always some issues with
the generalizability of the results.
One should not forget
that
we cannot study the overall population.
That's why we rely on sample.
And since we rely on our sample to talk
about the population, we always would
like to get the best and representative
sample
that can give us a very good
understanding of the population.
Many random sampling methodologies or
probability sampling methodologies help
us to get a much better sample as
compared to the non-probability
sampling.
Moreover,
in non-probability sampling,
it's always
a problem that we cannot generalize our
results coming from the sample for the
overall population with a very strong
amount of confidence.
Thank you.
