After pleading guilty to three felony charges in June regarding the wrongful obtaining of public assistance, Bellomo received stayed prison sentences totaling 12, 13, and 15 months according to Minnesota sentencing guidelines. In addition to these suspended jail terms, he was placed on probation for up to five years with the specific condition that he must pay restitution for the full amount of $263,949 that was improperly obtained from the state. The investigation into Bellomo's activities began when a county financial worker discovered that he held a bank account which he had failed to disclose during his benefit applications.
