Neck Pain from Screen Time | Posture Could Be the Reason | Manipal Hospital Kanakapura Road
Watch on YouTubeVideo summary
Your head naturally weighs between four to five kilograms, but the effective load on your neck increases dramatically when you bend forward to look at screens or hold devices close to your face. This excessive strain does not merely cause temporary discomfort; it leads to muscle fatigue, triggers pain in the neck and back, dehydrates spinal discs, accelerates spondylosis, and irritates nerves resulting in cervical radiculopathy. Essentially, your neck is not aging prematurely but is being overworked by poor habits, a concept known as biomechanics, which can be easily felt by comparing the tension in your neck when holding a phone at chest level versus eye level.
Several common daily activities significantly contribute to this neck strain, with scrolling on mobile phones while lying in bed being particularly harmful because it twists the spine into an unnatural resting position. Similarly, keeping a laptop flat on a desk forces the neck into excessive flexion, increasing tension, while maintaining incorrect posture while driving also places undue stress on the cervical region. To mitigate these risks, experts recommend keeping phones and laptops at eye level using stands, taking breaks every thirty to forty minutes, and performing chin tuck exercises to strengthen the neck muscles and maintain proper alignment.
It is crucial to distinguish between common neck pain and more serious symptoms that indicate nerve compression or spinal cord involvement, such as pain radiating into the arms, tingling or numbness in the fingers, weakness, loss of grip, difficulty buttoning shirts, clumsiness while walking, or an inability to balance. While simple neck pain is a frequent lifestyle issue, these specific neurological signs are not common and suggest that the nerves in the neck or the spinal cord itself may be under pressure. Ignoring these warning signs can lead to severe complications, making early evaluation essential for preventing long-term damage.
If you experience symptoms like radiating pain, hand numbness, or weakness, it is vital to seek professional medical attention rather than waiting for the condition to worsen. Specialists at facilities like Manipal Hospital Kanakapura Road offer detailed and focused cervical spine assessments to diagnose the root cause of these issues and provide appropriate treatment plans. By understanding the mechanics of neck strain and adopting better ergonomic habits, individuals can prevent many common problems, but those exhibiting signs of nerve compression should consult a spine specialist immediately for a comprehensive evaluation and care.

>> Your head weighs about 4 to 5 kg, but
when you bend forward and see in the
neck in the forward posture, the
effective load on the neck increases
dramatically. So, this overload can
cause different problems. That is one,
it can cause muscle fatigue. Second, it
can trigger the pain over the pain in
the neck or back. It can cause discs to
dehydrate and it can cause early
spondylosis and it can lead to nerve
irritation which causes cervical
radiculopathy. Your neck isn't aging, it
is overworking. Try this. So, keep your
phone at the chest level and look down
and see how much tension you can feel in
the neck when you keep the phone at this
posture. And now you lift the phone to
the your eye level and keep the phone
for some time and you can feel the
difference in the neck how it feels.
That's the difference. That is called as
biomechanics. The first mistake is
scrolling in bed. With the mobiles on,
scrolling in the bed is very bad because
your spine is twisted rest. Second part
is keeping the laptop in a flat neck
posture. So, keeping the laptop without
your neck height flexes the neck and it
increases the tension over the neck. And
the third wrong posture people follow is
wrong posture while driving. So, keeping
the head and neck in a right posture
while driving is very important. What
are the fixes? Keep your phone at the
eye level, keep your laptop stand and
keep your laptop at eye level and take
breaks every 30 and 40 minutes and try
doing chin tuck exercises. So, as a
spine surgeon, these symptoms are matter
a lot for us. If your pain is radiating
to your arm or if you're feeling a
tingling and numbness in your fingers or
you have a weakness or grip loss in in
your hands and you have a difficulty
balancing and you have a clumsiness
while walking and if you have a
difficulty buttoning and unbuttoning a
shirt, these are all very important
signs because these indicate there is a
compression in of the nerve in the neck
or in severe cases the spinal cord is
getting compressed. So, in today's life
neck pain is very common in our
lifestyle. But, numbness in the hands,
weakness in the hands, dropping objects
from the hands, imbalance while walking
is not common. So, if your pain is
traveling into your arms and if you're
noticing a tingling and numbness in the
hands and if you have a weakness in the
hands, please get evaluated early. You
can consult a spine specialist at our
Manipal Hospital Kanakapura Road for a
detailed and focused cervical spine
assessment, evaluation, and get a
treatment.
