Myths You Should Stop Believing |Facts for Better Recovery | Manipal Hospital Kanakapura Road
Watch on YouTubeVideo summary
The video addresses three common misconceptions about back pain that can inadvertently turn acute issues into chronic conditions. The first myth concerns bed rest; while short-term rest of 24 to 48 hours may help with an acute strain, prolonged inactivity for weeks or months actually weakens muscles, causes stiffness, and slows down the healing process. Instead of staying still, the video emphasizes that movement acts as medicine when performed correctly, helping to restore function rather than hindering recovery.
The second major point clarifies the relationship between disc bulges seen on scans and the need for surgery. A disc bulge is merely a radiological finding and does not automatically indicate danger or require immediate intervention. Surgery should only be considered by a spine surgeon as a clinical decision when there are specific severe indicators, such as progressive weakness, involvement of bowel or bladder function, or severe nerve compression that fails to improve with medication and physiotherapy. The core philosophy presented is that surgical operations aim to address functional loss rather than simply reacting to fear generated by medical imaging.
The third myth tackled is the belief that painkillers provide a complete solution. While these medications can reduce inflammation, they do not rebuild posture, restore muscle strength, or improve mobility on their own. The video argues that rehabilitation is the critical factor in preventing the recurrence of pain and restoring daily function. If an individual experiences recurring pain, radiating symptoms, or if their condition interferes with activities of daily living, seeking an expert evaluation is essential to avoid letting misinformation dictate spinal health.
In conclusion, the message is clear that not every back pain requires surgery and no amount of painkillers will fix the underlying cause without active rehabilitation. The safest course of action when red flag signs or neurological symptoms appear is to consult a specialist for a comprehensive diagnosis and care plan. For those seeking proper spine care and accurate diagnosis, the video directs viewers to book appointments at Manipal Hospitals Kanakapura Road, reinforcing the importance of informed decisions over relying on myths that can delay effective treatment.

>> I'm going to tell you the three biggest
lies people believe about the back pain
and believing them is the fastest way
your pain becomes chronic and it is not
repairable. The bed rest helps in only
24 to 48 hours only in case of acute
strain, but the long bed rest for a
weeks or months together can cause
muscle weakness. It can cause stiffness
in your muscles. It can avoid hearing
and it will slow the healing. So,
movement is medicine when you done it
right. Disc bulge is a radiological
finding. Surgery is a clinical decision
which will be taken up by the spine
surgeon. We consider surgery only
[music] when when there is a progressive
weakness and when there is a involvement
of bowel bladder and there is a severe
nerve compression which is not improving
with medications and physiotherapy. We
operate for functional loss, not for
scan fear. Painkillers reduces
inflammation, but they don't rebuild the
posture or a muscle strength or
mobility. Rehab is what prevents the
recurrence. If your pain is recurring or
it is radiating or if it is affecting
your activities of daily living and
daily function, get evaluated. Don't let
misinformation decide your spine health.
Not every disc bulge is dangerous. Not
every back pain needs surgery [music]
and painkiller never fixes the cause. If
there are red flag signs and if you are
having a neurological symptoms, the
safest step is to get an expert
evaluation. For comprehensive spine care
and the right diagnosis, you can book
your appointment at Manipal Hospitals
Kanakapura Road.
