Furthermore, understanding the pathophysiology guides treatment decisions, such as administering antibiotics while simultaneously checking kidney and liver function to ensure the patient can safely metabolize the medications.
Nursing care is equally dependent on this foundational knowledge, requiring a systematic approach that includes assessment, implementation of treatments, and ongoing monitoring. Nurses must coordinate with respiratory therapists for chest physiotherapy, encourage patients to cough and breathe deeply, and regularly review lab trends and imaging results to evaluate progress. This comprehensive understanding ensures that every action taken by the nurse is logically connected to the patient's specific pathology, prioritizing interventions that directly address the disease process and promote recovery.
Ultimately, mastering pathophysiology not only enhances direct patient care but also significantly improves performance on nursing examinations like the NCLEX. When students understand exactly what is wrong with a patient's physiology, they can naturally predict clinical findings and determine appropriate priorities without relying solely on rote memorization. Welcome to nursing school explained and
this video about the importance of
knowing and understanding
pathophysiology
to help you out in nursing school to
understand the concepts and the nursing
care. So let's look at this really
quickly. Patho means disease and
physiology is the study of how the body
works. You've all taken anatomy and
physiology as a prerequisite for nursing
school. But now we're not dealing with
healthy individuals. Now we are de
dealing with diseased individuals. So
that's what pathofysiology means. It's
basically focuses on what in the body is
not working as expected. And the
important thing is because now if we
know what is not working as expected, we
can
already deduce or come up with what
signs and symptoms do we expect the
patient to have, what diagnostic tests
might there be, what treatment or
medications might the patient be getting
for the um the disease, and of course
what's the involved nursing care. And
then when you understand the
pathophysiology, you can kind of put it
all together in a concept map. And
that's one of my favorite things on how
to learn in nursing school. And I do
this in all my videos where I have the
disease process and I break it down into
these different elements for you to help
you understand. So for example, if we
use a concept map for pneumonia, we know
pneumonia is an infection, a disease of
the lungs. So the body the lungs are not
functioning the way that they are
expected. So signs and symptoms that the
patient might be having well infection
they probably will have an increase in
temperature. They might be tachicardic
they might also have a little bit of a
low blood pressure. Their respiratory
rate might be altered most likely
faster. The lung sounds will be
abnormal. So we already know that if
there's an infection in that lungs that
that's most likely what we'll see. And
then diagnostic tests. Well, if we want
to know what's going on in the lungs,
we'll probably go to check a chest
X-ray. If there are any other
co-orbidities, we might have to look a
little bit further. Maybe rule out other
diseases, but most likely a chest X-ray
at the minimum is what we're going to
get. But also look at your labs. So
infection, labs, we're going to need a
white count, a complete blood count.
Most likely, we'll be preparing to give
the patient antibiotics. So, let's look
at their kidney and liver function to
make sure that they can actually
metabolize the medications that we're
about to give them. Now, treatment and
medications. I just talked about
antibiotics, but that might also include
maybe some oxygen, some chest
physiootherapy, some breathing
treatments, nebulizer, aluterol, those
kind of things to help the patient get
better. And then last but not least,
always very important, the nursing care.
So what do we do to help our patient get
better? Well, first of all, we need to
assess our patient, follow the nursing
process, do a complete focused
respiratory assessment, and then
implement all the treatments. So, we're
going to coordinate with the respiratory
therapist. We're going to maybe even
perform chest physiootherapy. We're
going to keep the patient
with their up with their coughing and
deep breathing. We're going to check the
latest chest X-ray and see what the lab
values are doing. How are they trending?
So, this is how the pathophysiology
relates to the different things that we
always look at with with our patient.
And if you know what's wrong with the
patient, what's wrong with their
physiology, you can kind of come up with
the things that you're going to need to
answer ENLEX questions and of course
care for your patient. And once you
understand this, the enl questions are
going to come somewhat naturally because
then you know, okay, here's what's
wrong. Here's what I'm going to see in
the patient. What are my priorities? So,
pathophysiology is super super important
to understand. I have all my videos

and answer all those ENLEX questions.
