The Russians are exploring various
options to enhance the defense of their
T-72,
T-80, and other tanks against drone
attacks using a variety of exotic
options, including the Slet-M and Fakel
flashbang grenades. According to Defense
Express, the grenades are intended to
blind Ukrainian attack drones when they
strike Russian main battle tanks. Andrei
Tarasenko, a researcher into the history
of armored vehicles, describes this
Russian idea in his blog. It involves
using munitions as an additional
countermeasure against UVs. Tarasenko
proposed combining electronic warfare
and explosive countermeasures against
drones. According to the authors, their
use near a drone could interfere with
its operation and prevent an attack.
However, each detonation of such a
device damages the MBTs armor.
Therefore, to minimize the potential
negative impact on the armor, the idea
was put forward to use flashbang
grenades. Their blast wave, they argued,
wouldn't damage the armor, but would be
sufficient to knock the drone off
course. The Fakel and Slet-M flashbang
grenades were mentioned as possible
options. However, to implement this
idea, tanks would have to be equipped
with special launchers capable of
quickly firing the grenades at a drone.
At the same time, according to Defense
Express experts, there is no evidence
yet to suggest that such a system has
become a standard protection measure for
Russian tanks. In fact, this is a
proposed concept, the effectiveness of
which still requires practical testing.
